Hair Discrimination

Posted by Bahiyah Corbin in Senior Capstone · Rosen-Long · ILP/TFI/CAP on Monday, May 20, 2019 at 8:46 am
Overall, this capstone was very successful. This topic wasn't our first option. At first we just had an idea of giving back by doing a food bank. We later on found out their was many issues with that idea. We found an idea that both interest us, which is hair discrimination. This topic isn't something that people find as important but it is a small problem that people are experiencing in our communities. I am happy with the final project. One thing I wish we would've did differently was find more examples in social media.

Throughout this script, we created a script of students taking a test. Throughout the test, the students were talking about many key facts about water pollution. As a group, we chose this topic because we believe this is an important issue that is affecting many lives in the world. I contributed to this project by adding ideas and suggestions. One thing we could've did differently as a group is a being louder throughout the video.

I was very surprised that not only is lead poisoning effecting many kids but it is also still being spread when construction work is done. I wonder what major issue will need to happen for people to notice the serious problems that lead poisoning causes.

Sustainability Resturant

Posted by Bahiyah Corbin in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 10:54 pm

Sustainability is being able to maintain a stable life. As a group, we choose to look at the effects restaurants have on our environment. This industry affects all of us because we all go to restaurants and how they affect the environment and their surrounding community is important because their production of goods can hurt the environment. Some natural resource that can be used in our sustainability is to use natural ingredients to make their cuisine. Also, depending on where they put their restaurant they will need land to build, electricity, and water so they can cook, clean, and for plumbing. Some of the ways in which ecological systems depend on energy inputs because individual organisms rely on a continuous input of energy in order to survive, grow, and reproduce. Scientists keep track of inputs, outputs, and changes to complex systems by keeping data of every system.Natural systems change over time and space due to the negative contributions humans are doing to our earth.

The earth systems affect each other by causing global warming, animals and plants.
The understanding of the environmental science aid in handling natural disasters will prevent less death and more safety cautions. An effort that we can make to create a sustainable future is treating our environment with better care.

Fast Plants Final Reflection

Posted by Bahiyah Corbin in Biochemistry 2 Honors on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 10:09 am
The procedure of this lab is to take parental seeds and observe each parental type which is homozygous with the phenotypes we will investigate. In order to complete our lab successfully everyone will need to have good background knowledge on genetics. The purpose of the procedure is to understand the basics of Mendelian genetics, the use of punnet squares, chi-square analysis of data, and the life cycle of diploid organisms useful in genetics studies. Something that stood out to me was how after week two our plants begin to grow and all have pods. Only plants NP gave birth. Things that would hinder our plants were the environment it was in and how we took care of it.  We did not water our plant everyday.

Q4 Artist Statement

Posted by Bahiyah Corbin in Art 2 · Hertz · C1 on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 8:33 am

For this project, I created a colorful butterfly surrounded by different designs. The background of this painting consist of many designs such as circles, stripes, and zig zags. The same colors used for the background design was used for the inside of the butterfly. Through this work I want to communicate that the viewer has to  look deeper behind the background to see the beautiful butterfly. For this project I used paint brushes, acrylic paint, paper, and a pencil to create this artwork. Before painting, I made a detailed sketch of the outline of my painting. My current work relates to my previous work because of the acrylic painting and paper that was used. This painting didn’t take as long to create because of the simple colors that were used. I use green, red, yellow, and purple paint. I used painting the background of the butterfly first. Once down the background, I began painting the inside of the butterfly with little light paint strokes. An artist who makes similar work who inspired me was Damien Hirst.  Damien Hirst was inspired by John Noakes to try spin art. Damien has stated the inspiration for his famous spin paintings were also from a children’s TV show called Blue Peter. This TV show demonstrated this technique in 1975.

A certain technique that was important during this artwork was not to use too much water when painting. Something I am most proud of in this work is the neatness when painting the background. If I was able to change one thing about my project, I would change the color choices. I only used about four colors. I wish I bended more colors which would of made my painting look more attractive to the eye. Overall, I enjoyed creating this artwork and learning more about different artist.

For this Quarter 4 Benchmark we were assigned to research one of the major topics that we studied with a unique issue. As a group decided to look more closer on the topic the over population growth. Many keys materials that stood out to me was that one major cause of population growth is the rate of births are higher than the death rate. This was surprising to me because of what I am observing on social media, the news, and in my everyday life, the rate of lives lost/deaths seem to be increasing  as years go on. Something I am still wondering is, what will happen if the population increases to the point where everyone isn't able to receive the everyday essential needs to live?

3D Turtle

For my Quarter 2 project, I chose to do Sculpture/ 3 dimensional. I wanted to create something that I would be able to use outside of school. I chose to create a 3 dimensional turtle. My turtle has a rough texture for its cell. The inside is a darker purple/black to bring out the bring green color of the cell. The eyes are yellow to compliment the bright green cell. I would like my work to communication strength, stability, and persistence. Personality a turtle is one of my favorite animals. For this project, I wanted to do something more out of the box. Usually for my projects, I chose something more simple with no meaning. With working with clay for the right time, it was many trials and errors. I was about to work with clay tools to give my turtle certain textures and features. Using Paint for my sculpture is something I usually do for previous projects.
While creating my sculpture I noticed during my test model, the legs were not sturdy enough to stay once the clay dried. I noticed that putting water on your finger tips helped a lot when it came to modeling the clay. Modeling the bottom of the turtle and the cell I believe was the most difficult and time consuming part. I used clay tools to creative a rough texture like an actual turtle. A certain technique that was very helpful during this process was putting water on my finger tips to help better mod the clay. A similar artist who inspired my work is Lakeside Pottery. Something that I am most proud of about my work is it being sturdy and strong. If I was able to change one thing about this project it would be the size, I would like my sculpture to be a little bit bigger. In conclusion, while doing this project I was about to learn many new techniques and how to work with new tools.

Q1 Artist Statement

Posted by Bahiyah Corbin in Art 2 · Hertz · C1 on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 8:30 am

My artwork shows a girl in highschool reading a textbook. The girl was an orange shirt with long brown hair. Over towards the left side of the photo show her thoughts. For this project, I use modge podge to find words and images from magazines. For example, the word “colleges”, “school” and a picture of a Blue Cross Blue Shield sign. The girl’s thoughts represent the daily thoughts that go throughout my mind. The background has black swirls that represent daily confusion and frustration. I used a pencil to begin my sketch. For this project I used sharpie marker, color pencils, and modge podge. For the more detailed parts of her face, I used an brown color pencil. For the larger parts that needed coloring, I used a brown sharpie for her hair and an orange marker for her shirt. I am most proud of using modge podge very neatly. The modge podge was used for pasting words or pictures that related to the everyday thoughts that go throughout my mind. This current art work relates to a previous work that I did during my sophomore year. I created a self portrait with creating the background out of newspaper. Throughout both projects, I used words from articles that related to the things I think of or found interesting.

For this project, I first began to sketch out a drawing of a girl reading a textbook and a thought bubble of things she would think of daily. Then I started to look through newspapers for key words and pictures that related to thing I thought of on a daily. Once finding around 5-10 things, I mixed white school glue with a small amount of water and began to paste my words and pictures. After letting it dry, I began to color and outline my drawing with sharpies and color pencils.  An artist who inspired me https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/smiling-student-open-book-thinking-21365118.jpg

A certain technique that was important to this work was the size brush that I use. I learned that using a smaller brush allowed my modge podge to lay better. A new technique that I learned is using a smaller brush and not a lot of your water for modge podge will create a smoother surface. I am most proud of the modge podge that shows my thoughts. If I could change one thing, I would add more detail in the face. In conclusion, for this project I learned to think outside of the box. Usually, when making projects I tend to finish fast because I only do the basics. For the project, I went outside my comfort zone and tried new things.

I created this artwork because I wanted to work with materials that I never worked with before. My overall vision for my work was to artwork an artwork that was different and unique. I think my artwork communicates a positive and happy feeling. I think I achieved a positive feeling through this creation of this work. My current work relates to a previous artwork that I did in middle school with paint. My art work fits in with still life contemporary art. My artwork is very similar to a painting by Marc Dalessio named Two Roses. During the process of creating this artwork, the process of creating this went very fast. With already knowing what kind of design I wanted to do. Carving on the linoleum palate only took two days. I struggle with making a print with figuring out the perfect amount of paint to use. My inspiration for my image came from https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2434/4048317339_24c1be827d.jpg . My artwork reflects my own life because I live an happy and positive lifestyle. My artwork can influence and make an impact on the world because it creates an happy feeling. During this process the technique that was most important for creating my artwork was the way I held the carving tool. I used three different carving tools which were all used for different things. The smaller carving tools were used to make finer lines throughout my artwork. A new technique that I learned with this process is that you do not need to use a lot of pressure to curve out the linoleum palate.

Overall, I enjoyed making this artwork. I just wish the process didn't go as fast as it did. I had fun using materials that I never worked with before. I hope that I am able to work with carving tools again.

I created this artwork because I wanted to work with three different types of material. I was able to work with paint, mod podge, and crayons. My overall vision for my work was to create a portrait of a young girl with the background of the important news articles. I think my work communicates positive and good vibes to the viewer. I think I achieved a very unique look through this creation of this work. My current work relates to one of my previous artwork was when I once created did a mod podge with a balloon to create an mask. An example of an artist or work of art that fits with contemporary art is a portrait by Zak Prekop. He creates paintings with the illusion of light and depth. Starting off the project i had to cut multiple pieces of new articles which would be use to my background of the portrait. Also, then drawing an outline of drawing and figure out the spacing. I began with the background with the mod podge because that was the most time consuming part. Then, painted the outline of the girl, her clothing, and face. FInally, colored her hair in with black crayon. My inspiration for my image came from https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2434/4048317339_24c1be827d.jpg . This work reflects the world because it includes actual news articles and major stories. My work can influences my own life in a positive way when it comes to my upcoming projects in art class. A certain technique that was important was the mod podge, using not to much but not to little for the newspaper. A new technique that I learned or experimented more with in the process of making this work is the amount of paint used. Overall this project turned out very good. It didn’t take long at all to finish and complete all components. I would enjoy to do this project again.

Color Wheel Project

Posted by Bahiyah Corbin in Art 2 · Hertz · b1 on Monday, October 31, 2016 at 10:21 am

Color Wheel is a circle with different colored sectors used to show the relationship between colors. For this project I chose to do a ballerina’s dance with two layers. I created this work because it was very unique and different. Also, I was able to put my own spin on the design and background.Overall I think I good job and took my time on each color to create the right tints. I chose to do an light purple and black round to complaint the color wheel of the ballerina's dress.

I expected my audience to help me make my art work better. My partner gave me both positive and negative feedback about my artwork. My current work relates to one of my previous projects when I had to create a pattern of colors. My art work fits in Modern Day art when it comes to different types of contemporary art.

A source that was inspiration to my artwork was a similar printing by another high school student. An artist that I have been influnced by is my current/ past art teachers. Their art work has shown me how to put my own twist on artwork that I create to be more unique. This work fits into a series of work because I am able to use what I learned about the colors in father more projects. A certain technique that was important was the type of paint brush and amount of paint I used for each color. A new technique that I learned during this process was using.

Two best friends is a handful….

Having two best friends who act just like you is kind of stressful. Image having it being another two of you? As all friends do we have our ups and downs when we don't talk for days or get mad at each other for dumb things. My two best friends are Malaysha and Jada. We tell each other everything! I think it was meant that we were made best friends because if we were all sisters….. I am the youngest of the group, our birthdays all go in order by the month's, first December, January, and February. We have actually grew a bond so close that we actually tell people we are just related. We get in trouble together, lie together, fight together, argue together, and most importantly we are always their for each other.

Having all of us under the same roof gets us in a lot of trouble. Good thing we all went to different high schools. Jada is the comedian in the group. Malaysha is the one in the group that has a good forsite, and I am the trouble maker. All our similar personalities ties into one.  Our friendship will never be broken. Many more years to come and to build an even stronger bond!

Physics Benchmark Q4

We were assigned to make a sculpture that has a personal significance which uses electric currents. As a group choose to use a cardboard box with four light bulbs powered by only one battery. We decided to use a cardboard box because we wanted to use a recyclable item that we would be able to be reused again in the future. Our first idea was to use a water bottle, in order to use the water bottle we had to use six light bulb which connected in series with two batteries. As we were close to being finished we tested out our circuit and it worked, but the next day only three out of the six bulbs would light up.

The meaning of the art work that I created is that there is always going to be ups and downs but to always stay positive. I was inspired to do this art work so if anyone is having a bad day they are able to look at my artwork to see that their is always good in no matter what is going on in your life.  I choose to put my artwork on my locker because I go to my locker every morning and at the end of the day and it will remind me that I should always stay positive. This project did change my perception of Art because it allowed me to see how much work actually goes to creating something with great meaning. This also change my perception of Art when I travel around the city because many people risk their lives to create artwork that represents 'something deeper than just graffiti.

Social Medial Survive Guide

Online I am respectful, caring, and real when I appear online. Bases on my appearance people will perceive me as very confident and pretty. I consider how people may see me online. Some pros about sharing online is keeping in touch with old friends. Some cons of sharing online is what others may view you. An impact on our online lives is not being able to have certain jobs or go to certain schools. Free speech is being able to say whatever you want. But free speech is protect to those who abuse it or use it in a negative way. Three tips that I could give someone who uses social media is public to everyone, post only positive things and social media could either effect your future in a positive or negative way.
