For my senior year capstone I decided to collaborate with my peer, Natalie, to work on Homelessness. Throughout the year in the time we had we worked on finding out more information on what homelessness is and what is it that causes people to end in certain circumstances. We learned so much together and it turned us into young leaders.

Our first step as a team was to gather as much possible information that we could find. Our purpose was not just to give money to these people in need and call it a day. We wanted to educate ourselves into knowing what it is that brings the people of Philadelphia to these circumstances. In doing so we would be able to learn what is going on in our own city and what is it that needs to be done.

For us it got really complicated when it came to talking to shelters and big agencies that helped homelessness. Then came how to be able to fund for what was needed in these shelters to help care for these women. We had a very hard time communicating with these shelters since they are underfunded on staff but we were able to work with Women of Change which is a shelter that holds about 25 to 30 women and mostly help women get back on their feet. With more communication we were able to figure out what was it that these women really needed and not what we thought they needed.

Hair Discrimination

Posted by Bahiyah Corbin in Senior Capstone · Rosen-Long · ILP/TFI/CAP on Monday, May 20, 2019 at 8:46 am

Overall, this capstone was very successful. This topic wasn't our first option. At first we just had an idea of giving back by doing a food bank. We later on found out their was many issues with that idea. We found an idea that both interest us, which is hair discrimination. This topic isn't something that people find as important but it is a small problem that people are experiencing in our communities. I am happy with the final project. One thing I wish we would've did differently was find more examples in social media.

For my capstone, I decide to work with a non-profit organization called Beat The Streets to help bring awareness to wrestling and the organization itself. I meet with the head director, lead mentors, and mentees to talk about what they think about Beat The Streets. I interviewed the head director on what Beat The Streets and why'd he join. Then I interviewed the mentees and children on what BTS meant to them. I also helped some lead mentors work on spreading awareness and planning events.

Our purpose and overall end goal is to give our fellow seniors a positive, exciting, and creative farewell from their long and tedious high school experience through our graduation caps. The skill that we will be focusing on is creativity. We both enjoy making art and decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to collaborate and showcase our skills whilst impacting our senior class in a beautiful way. We hope that after this year it will become a tradition at SLA that students take out the time to design their own graduation cap that shows them as a person.

I worked with Tyheim Price to be apart of the lighting crew for our school play. We had to learn how to operate the lights as nobody in the school knew how to properly operate them. We had to come up with light cues for the entire script of the play, and we also had to present a guide on how to work the lights for future students. I went to the very first practice to meet the actors and get an understanding of who I was working with. Many of the people who had a part in the play were very chill, goofy, fun people who wanted to put on the best production possible. This made it easy to work with them when Tyheim and I started going to tech practices. The actors were very accommodating to working out the kinks of the lights and it made for a very experimental environment where we could try new things with the lights to see what worked best for each scene. Collaboration was a big part of the process. I also feel like I learned a few lessons in collaboration from the actors. Seeing them all work together when it came to vocal warmups, script readings, or whatever, helped teach me a lot about working with a team. We presented our play to the public on April 12th and 13th, it went very well. There was one big problem with the lights on the last scene of the first act on the April 12th show. Ms. Hare, Tyheim, and I were very confused and started to stress a bit about what was going on. Luckily, Tyheim figured out what was going on and fixed the problem. After the April 13th show I stayed after to clean up the stage, reflecting on what we have all accomplished over the past few months. This project was very fulfilling and I felt like we all really have something back to the community. It was a very fun show to work on, and now I might have to come back next year to see what production they put on next.

I did my capstone with three other members and Elijah Banks, Brian Bess, and Kashawn Gilmore. We decided to host a basketball tournament for the younger grades in order to teach them about the importance of sportsmanship, Collaboration, and communication because they will need these skills for the rest of their time in SLA and in the real world.  Our plan was to coach the 9th, 10th, and 11th graders that are interested in basketball to improve their learning and collaboration skills. Our Inquiry questions were, What made us want to have a basketball tournament?, How will the kids participating benefit from this tournament?, and what will we gain from this tournament? Throughout this whole process I learned that you can teach life lessons through activities that people enjoy and it can positively impact their lives.

For our senior project, Karrine and I decided to use our collaboration skills to connect with one of our very own sophomores in the building, in order to understand a day in the life of someone with a disability. The process was very challenging, as figuring out what we wanted the goal and outcome of this project to be was not easy at all. From start to finish, it took extreme focus, and time in and outside of school to accomplish our goal. Our project focused strictly on understanding that someone with a disability does not change the fact that they are still human as well. Understanding that disability does not limit you, was the overall message we gained from working with Sam. From the research, to the interviewing, to going to a wheelchair basketball tournament, and just all around communicating with Sam on a daily basis, allowed myself and Karrine to learn that focusing on the disability honestly does not matter, but we should focus more on who they are on the inside rather than the outside.

For my capstone me, Kitana and Zaniyah created a video for both seniors and upcoming freshman. Our goal was to create a video that connects with the senior class and how they have changed over the years. As well as showing how others can deal with high school and leave a legacy behind like the other classes have. For the research part of our project, we researched what a community really was and how it can affect the people around you. When we gathered information on a community, we wanted to ask questions that would relate to what students and teachers in our school thought of our community. We talked to the seniors so that the incoming freshman could see how it would feel like to be in the SLA community as well as the experiences that you could have. The advisors in the video were for the seniors and their final message to the class of 2019. I learned how important the community is and how much your high school experience and the people you surround yourself with can influence your life and help you grow as a person.

Julie Baker Capstone

For my capstone, I wanted to give the juniors some helpful tips and help them get a head start on the college process. I know first hand the college process can be very agonizing and stressful, but I believe with the help of my capstone it would make the process much easier. I met with a group of juniors once a day after school for four weeks to help them prepare for the college selection process that they will be facing next year. One of the actives that we did together was I help set up their Common App. I asked around my senior class and ask what was one of the hardest things about the college process and almost all their responses were setting up the Common App. The Common App was not only difficult to fill out but it had so much information that you needed. With this information in mind, I had my group start setting up their college board to get a head start before senior year. With getting college board information out of the way now, they will be ahead of their class peers entering their senior year. This will cause less stress on them while they can focus on college essays and benchmarks. The reason why I wanted this to be my capstone is that I wanted to share the information that I wish I knew going into my senior year. Senior year is a very stressful yet exciting year, I wanted the juniors to spend their last year at SLA making memories not stressing over what comes next.

For my capstone, I worked with Anthony, Dexter, and Lamier to create a demo of a video game. The video game is a side-scrolling 2D platformer shooter. The process of making this game was quite hard, as we had to choose between various different strategies in order to create it. We first started with programming languages like C++, Python, and Javascript, but we quickly gave up as it would take too long to learn even though it would have been nice to create something unique. We eventually chose Construct 3 and used its engine to make the game. Over the course of this capstone, we learned how to program, design levels, and create sprites for the game. Lamier, Dexter, and Anthony worked on level design, Anthony was doing most of the programming, I did the sprites, conception, and miscellaneous help. We also learned to create music in Garage Band with Dexter and our friend Samuel doing this. As for playing the game, the controls are: arrow keys for movement; double tapping up allows a double jump; pressing z shoots projectiles.

Here’s the link to the game: Play
