Heart Disease & Stroke

Posted by Imani Horne in Anatomy and Physiology · Aziz · E on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 12:47 am
With doing this project my partner and I chose to do heart disease and strokes because we felt that it was in the top 5 of the leading causes of death which is terrible. With this project, I have learned a lot and we were able to network with people from organizations and receive even more information. In this group, I contributed lots if information and I also contributed both of the interviews. Lastly, I contributed by editing the video. I felt like I had a huge part in the project. The most meaningful part of the experience of creating this PSA was putting together all of the bits and pieces of information together into one video.
Public health is a big issue pertaining to heart disease and strokes. Heart disease is a high rating of the cause of death in African Americans. It is almost number one in being the highest cause of death in the United States.
The economy, politics, and society also plays a big role in the healthcare system such as networking and raising money to find different research programs and free clinics for communities. Money wise the process of research id being affected because they can't get what they need if there is no money and they can't do tests or research if they don't have candidates so I say people also affect the process of research.

    About My Capstone

Leaving Science Leadership Academy(SLA) to start a new beginning, I felt like it was only right to give the students and teachers of SLA something different to think and learn about. I chose to raise awareness for Bipolar Disorder. I chose to do this project because multiple people in my family suffer from a mental illness and the most common one is bipolar disorder. I would like for people to know that this is a real problem in the world that is not talked about. So, I put together a presentation to educate my fellow peers and teachers about bipolar disorder that reflects on the school's five core values. Bipolar Disorder is when a person's chemicals in the brain are not regulated and can result in a depressed or manic state. The process of making my final product which is a video and power point which was a good experience. With the final video to my project my partner and I were able to interview two people who have bipolar disorder and get to know what they go through and some things that they deal with. The interview was quite easy, the making and editing was challenging but in the end, it worked out. In this project, I was able to learn more about bipolar disorder and learn how it affects people. This project was extremely helpful to me and I am hoping that it will be useful to someone else in need of information.

    THINK

Posted by Imani Horne in Art 2 · Hertz · d1 on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 11:38 pm
I created this art piece because I felt like it related to parents or just people in general doing things for people they love no matter the situation. I felt like with the birds it would be a good Idea to send off this message. I was hoping to create something that people would be able to look at and relate to in their own way. People take in pictures differently and get a different meaning out of it. This picture to me communicates love and calmness. Also that when it is dark and rainy it can also come out to be bright. The sky in my art is dark and the grass is bright. I achieved my overall picture for this project. I feel that it turned out great.

Compared to my other art work this piece does not relate to my other work. With this project was kind of easy. Drawing the birds was the easiest. Because it is mixed media I had to have about three or four things that were not the same and of different objects. I decided to use markers for the sky and a hot glue gun for the rain. I felt like that was the most creative. The rain and the grass made my work more of a 3-D type of work piece. I painted the birds and I used a silverback tac for the bigger birds eye. I did not really use any other pictures for this project. I just thought of it. My birds do not really look like any specific type of bird, I just drew and it came out how it came out.

    20170320_140023-1.jpg

My art relates to the world I live in because people today to alot for other people. It shows giving and doing what’s good for people you love, it gives/show's purpose. This art pieces relates to me because I give to everyone and anyone. I am a giving person. My piece could impact the world because it could be used as do as your parents/ someone who loved you did for you. Give and you will be given to. Patience is key in doing any art work. And just doing and and see where it takes you. With mines I just started drawing and a bird came. With painting i just grabbed colors and that is how my art came out the way it did. You just have to not think about it and just do it. I think that, that is where the best work comes from.

In contemporary art my work fits with an former artist named Keith Haring who is no longer alive. I believe that my art piece fits with his, iIt gives off the feeling of letting people think what they want about it/ people having their own perception of what they think your art piece means. My art piece is pretty obvious that there are two birds and the bigger bird is feeding the little one but that can mean anything. Keith’s art is with two stick figure people in a room with lines above their heads which could mean they are at a party or they are trying to help each other out. There are so many other ways you could see that art as.

    keith haring.png

Doing this piece I was not inspired by any other work.

In conclusion, I am very proud of my artwork. I feel that mixed media art has pulled a more artistic side from me, taught me that art is not always planned, it will never ever come out how you want it to. Overall I like that a lot of people will look at my work and think of different things like the meaning and why I did certain things the way I did them.

This project was a learning experience on growing the non traditional way. Although my plant just started to grow after weeks it was still fun. This taught me that there is more than one way to do things. This has opened up new ways to help the environment get justice to not only the environment but to people who live in places where the weather is unpredictable. This course has made environmental science a fun learning experience in learning how to plant, different ways to get environmental justice, learning about different natural systems and resources around you. This course helped a lot.

    Ice Cream

Posted by Imani Horne in Art 2 · Hertz · d1 on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 10:22 am
I chose to do the sculpture project because I felt like it would teach me a lot of things other than just art. This project taught me to be patience and that your first time doing something isn’t always going to be perfect. Sculpting takes time, lots of time which are why you need the patience to see your best work. On the art side, it taught me how to sculpt which I did not know how to do before this project. Doing this project I was hoping to achieve a nice piece of work. Overall it looks okay but not exactly how I wanted it to. Through the project, pieces were falling off and cracking and then my colors didn’t work out how I would have like them to. But it still looks nice and creative to be my first time sculpting. Whoever looks at my art will see it and think of food, desserts. The whole meaning of me sculpting this was to be about some type of food and I chose Ice Cream.
In this project, I achieved a lot of things. I felt like as long as the base of my project held up then everything else would be fine. This project also helped me achieve a little patience because when your working and pieces start to fall off you get mad but then you realize that you just have to remain calm and try to make it work and whatever it comes out as it will still look nice and hopefully people will get the picture. My other project (the color wheel relates to this because before I did the circle color wheel my original drawing was a cup with a drink and as it goes down the color would get darker but that didn’t work out. SO what I am trying to say is that if it would have worked out most of my work would have been in the food industry.
My work fits with someone named Sharon Core.  Shannon core did a picture of multiple hot dogs. I'm not sure what he did it but I'm sure she did it for the same reason I did. She either loves food or because she never really sees the art of food. I never really see works of art that are about food.
Trying to create my project I took up a lot of time figuring out what I was going to do and how I was going to do it. But then I realized that I needed to just start. I then took out some clay and began to mold it into a flat piece of paper. Next, I round the sides so that it looked like the shape of a tortilla. After that, I just rolled it slightly so that it could shape into a cone. Then there it was a perfect cone and I decided that I wanted to make it look like a waffle cone. So I made lines in and left it alone. Then I began to make my Ice cream like the scoops. I wanted a melted look so I then rolled them into balls and added a thin piece of clay on the edge to make it looked melted. I then let everything dry, I painted it and I didn’t like the colors so I painted everything Brown to make it look like chocolate everything. The Ice cream is chocolate marble and the cone is chocolate fudge. I searched google to get my idea. I wanted my sculpture to be a cake and with a melted ice cream cone on top but as I went through the project I realized that it was a bit too much. http://tinyurl.com/hc8e9o3, http://tinyurl.com/zw4cdrd, http://tinyurl.com/zyonc8y Below are some pictures that inspired me to do this piece.

    art -- Ice cream .jpg
My art reflects the world I live in because mostly everyone loves ICE CREAM and in the world, we live in everyone LOVES TO EAT.
I’m not really sure how my artwork could have an impact on the world other than to tell people to eat/ Eat more Ice cream who wouldn’t be good because there are already a lot of people in this world who are unhealthy. Doing this sculpture project it is important to take your time and have everything planned before you start. It is very important to be calm and to stay focused.
It is also important to make sure everything is smoothed out. When it’s smoothed out there is a lesser chance that it will crack and break. You can make it smooth by rubbing water on it until you see it smooth like a piece of paper. Put water in a little cup and add some clay to make it slick and then you rub it on your work and smooth it to your satisfaction. That is something that I learned at almost the end of me finishing my art piece.
In conclusion, this project has taught me many things. Doing this project I was able to make mistakes or break something and not be mad because I know that to every problem there is a solution. Doing this you have to have patience or nothing will work out in your favor. This project was fun and If was able to do it again I would and I would change a lot of things that I did with this project.

    Environmental Justice PSA Project

Posted by Imani Horne in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at 1:46 pm
For this quarter's benchmark my group chose to do air pollution, we focused on a certain part of Philadelphia though. We did the Riverwards which is a very toxic place in Philadelphia with about 5 or 6 neighborhoods within it. Asthma and death rates were high in the area. There were about 400 people more or less affected in the whole city of Philadelphia as of August 2016. A problem that we found was that a number of old buildings and factories were polluting the air both when they were active and now.
We chose this topic because millions of people die globally each year which is a huge problem. Our human population and other populations are dropping dead due to the chemicals, fumes, and toxic/trashy smells being released into the air. An example, about a week ago in South Philadelphia the air had a foul smell which was caused by a ferry in the water where oil was leaking. Little things like that can cause a big problem. An oil leak made a part of the city smell like it was rotting. We chose to this for reasons like that, the air can be polluted by little things which our human population will always be affected by. My group would just like to bring awareness to air pollution because some people don't know every component of this type of pollution and we would like them to know what they can learn and do from us.
In this group, I contributed ideas, and lots of information on this topic. I also contributed support to my team members ideas and tried to come up with suggestions if I didn't quite like their idea. In this group, I worked on this video with some of the creative things within the video. I said a lot of my knowledge of computers in learning how to find things and bring things up that my partners weren't able to do. I believe that I could have done better with my research portion. I found the valuable information I just don't think that all of my information was good for the part of the city we focused on. I believe I did well with communication and staying on top of all my responsibilities in this project. I was on top of everything I had to do.
The most meaningful part in creating this PSA was being able to communicate with everyone without a problem and everyone being supportive and understanding. Also learning how to use the editing app to make the video. I learned a lot moving through this project. Things like using the green screen. This project has taught me a lot about air pollution. I knew some things and I learned more things. This project was meaningful in a lot of ways.

    Standing with Standing Rock!!!!

    SOCIAL MEDIA IS STANDING

This is how social media is helping out with getting justice for Standing Rock and

    #dakotaaccesspipeline on twitter

    #dapl on twitter

    #NOdapl on twitter and facebook

    #Rezpectourwater

Thousands of people are using social media to fight for social justice in the Standing Rock and Dakota Access Pipeline situation.

Image result for Standing with Standing Rock!!!!

These hashtags has took this protest to another level. The hashtags has gotten so many people involved in standing up with them including celebrities. They have also gotten them connections with different organizations and companies to help out with different things. They also did so good with the hashtags by getting people involved and business that put their money into this pipeline are withdrawing because of the big mess it is making.

Social media plays a big role with helping and getting support for the situation. Social media has gotten them this far, I’m sure they will push to get them justice until then they will not back down. I read an article that stated the temperatures are dropping and some engineers volunteered to make small places for them to stay like tipis, huts just so they can stay warm and still fight for what they believe in.

Here's a video that will help you understand that you play a role in this too but you need to help out physically.

    My Color Wheel Project

Posted by Imani Horne in Art 2 · Hertz · d1 on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 9:50 am
I have created this piece of artwork because I love colors and I felt like if they all came together as a closing light it would look nice. I also created this because I never really paint and I never do creative things so I thought that If i did this it would change my experience in making an art piece.  My overall vision of my work is simple and beauty. I know that there are other paintings out there that are better than mines but coming from me, a person who doesn’t really like to do stuff like this it is nice. I am very proud that I was able to create something that pops out at you.
People who see my artwork won’t really be excited about it. It’s a simple art piece with lines and color. There may be some people who say that it is nice and other who think not. My work would fit probably in the middle. I know that people are more creative than me so there's would be at the top and I did better than other so I would rank myself to be in the middle. My art work fits in with the history of art. It fits in with the color systems. I did colors, colors in between and over the top colors.  Which was basically the color system. They played with colors and made many more colors in comparison to me.
Inspiration for my art work… I would have to say, is the art piece Ms. Hertz has on the wall. It’s a girl with her umbrella that is colorful all around. That was inspiration. I felt like I wanted to do mines bigger and better. Also art piece that I found online inspired me. www.colourlovers.com. My work would fit nice in an art exhibition. I would go with the art work that goes circular with lines. Similar to my art piece.  My work relates to others because we all used the same colors. We just all have different minds. Someone else's mind is more creative than mines. People who see my artwork won’t really be excited about it. It’s a simple art piece with lines in color. There may be some people who say that it is nice and other who think not.
Knowing what your doing is the most important technique. If you know what you're doing you’ll be on track and in the right direction. If not you’ll probably do good but you won’t know the ending. It’s like reading only the first page of a book and stopping…. You’ll never know the outcome. You should always do what you're most familiar with. It’s cool to think outside the box but make sure you're going to go through with your plan. Also staying focused and true to your artwork is a good technique that I learned in the process.

For this project students were put in a group. In that group you had to pick a place and plan a detailed trip. They had to had to have three different packages a 5, 7, and a 9 day trip package. In those packages they had to have prices, dates, day planners; activities and places to eat. Also transportation. This project was to help students be able to plan trip.

To me this project was a good experience. Before this project I did not know how to plan a trip. Now I know how to plan a trip and I know all the components that come along with it.

    La Poesía Española

Posted by Imani Horne in SPANISH 2 - Moran - C on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 12:34 am
This poetry project was to help students understand poetry and help them analyze poems. In this project students had to pick one person from a list of Spanish poets, Pick one of their poems, talk about them & yourself academically or accomplishments. Students also had to pick themes from one of the poets poems and write their own poem based off the meaning that they interpreted from the poets poem. This gave students the opportunity to learn more about the poet they chose and how to write their own poems based off of inspiration from the poets poem.

This poem project was a great experience for me. I'm not really good at poetry but I think this project helped me understand more. I learned how to pull things from poems. Like what I thought it meant and that you can have multiple perceptions on what it means to you. I think this project helped me become a better poem analyzer. This project helped me alot

For the benchmark "Las Noticias" we had to make a short news story. This news story had to be up to date with what was happening in the world. We had to research a location and get the correct information, such as the weather, health, and fashion. The main categories that needed to be included were the weather, anchors, health, breaking news, and fashion. I enjoyed this project there were a lot of creative ways to do it. I also enjoyed the partners in my group.

This project was to simply honor and remember the dead. We were supposed to also create a mask and a sugar skull and then design it to the person we chose. This project brought back good memories and I enjoyed doing it. This was a good project.
