Jaylun Pickett Capstone

Posted by Jaylun Pickett in Capstone on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 10:28 pm

Since I came in the middle of the senior year I did not have enough time to make my project as extravagant like other, but I did something I enjoy. For my capstone, I designed a pair of sneakers, for the process I had to purchase the shoe. There are other materials you need but I had already had them at home from other shoes for an example, the masking tape, the paint, and also an airbrush machine. After I got the design I wanted to put on the shoe, I start masking of the shoe which means putting tape on the areas I don't want the paint to get on. Next, I start to spray on the shoe, after I put the first coating on it I let it dry then put on another so there won’t be places on the shoe without paint. When I put enough layers on the shoe and let it dry I pull the tape to see if there are spots that got paint where there wasn’t suppose to be. If there is I get a cotton ball and put acetone on it and you apply it to the spot that was messed up. Finally, when I am finished I apply a layer of concealer on the shoe which prevents the paint from getting scratched off. When I finished my project I learned that this allows my to relieve stress and do something productive that helps express myself.

Senior Capstone

Posted by Jaylun Pickett in Capstone on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 10:17 pm

What do you enjoy doing? This question is what the principal, teachers, and students asked me when I was told about the senior capstone project. At the time I had no clue, I was nervous because I came to this new school that was in a different state and I enrolled in the middle of senior year. Also, this was my first time being at a school that had a senior exit project, so this even made me feel more nervous. Then I really started thinking and I remembered that I love sneakers. I came up with doing a custom on a pair of sneakers. My love sneakers began in the fifth grade when my best friend and I had on the same shoe, but different colors. We started arguing about which one was the nicest. Our rivalry continued into middle school where we competed on who shoe was the nicest and who had the most. I believe we loved the shoe so much because it allowed us to express yourself and show who we truly are. That is why I chose this as my capstone because I will be able to truly express myself, which is SLA’s core values. SLA has five core values, they are an inquiry, research, collaboration, presentation, and reflection. My capstone fits the core values because I had to review and analyze the project I chose, then I had collaborated with my friends to get a couple of their opinions about the design. Now I have finished my powerpoint all I have to do is present it then reflect on it. To do a custom on a pair of shoes there are a couple of steps you need to do. The first thing you need to do is get the pair of shoes you are going to design on. I like to do shoes that are all white or black because those are the easiest to paint on and also the design shows up better. If the shoe you chose is worn, you will need to clean it and then put a little bit of acetone on a cotton ball and wipe the shoe with it. This will remove all the dirt that was on the shoe so the paint would stay on better and ultimately look better. Next, you’ll have to come up with the design and the colors you’ll want to paint with. The paint has to be specifically for sneakers or you will ruin your whole shoe. The paint I use is Angelus, which is the best paint for sneakers. Also, you will need masking tape to cover up parts of the shoe you don’t want to paint or paint to get on. After you have done all of this you are ready to paint your shoes. You can use just a paint brush, but I have an airbrush machine that sprays on the paint. Also, it helps keep the paint even all around the shoes and it is faster. When you have finished painting you have to let the paint dry after the paint has dried you can put multiple layers of paint on it to prevent to paint from peeling or scratching off. Lastly, when you have finish painting and the shoe has dried, all you have to do is spray a layer on the concealer on it. This keeps the paint from messing up when you wear them. For an example if you step in a puddle or if someone accidentally steps on your shoes. I had face a couple of obstacles while trying to do my project. Since I had just moved to Philadelphia I didn’t have all of my tools I need to do my shoe. I had to wait for when I was able to go back to North Carolina to get the rest of my materials. I had many resources I used during this process like the paint, tape, and the other materials to do the shoe. Also had many friends and family members help me throughout the process by giving me ideas and also supporting me. The thing I am most proud of about my capstone is actually getting it done. I work pretty hard on doing shoes for my capstone so to be able to say I am done feels really good. Also, I'm happy with the way my shoes looked when I was finished. I learned that hard work does payoff at the end and also that I need to become more organized. If I could do the capstone over again I would change my approach completely. I have a small Instagram/Facebook business where I resale shoes. I would collect sneakers that I would give away to people that are in need of them. I feel like this would leave a bigger impact on people and represent SLA better. I feel SLA is a better place because I was a student here because I built bonds with people and teachers making SLA a place people are happy to go to.

For our capstone we made a blog that is about surviving high school. We give student and also parents advice on how high school is. We asked some students who have been through high school to gives us their real life experience, so that we could post it on our blog so incoming students or current students can read about it. We also asked people to ask us questions, and we recorded ourselves answering the questions and also just talking about our ups and downs throughout high school. We thought that this would be a good topic to do because so many students who are entering into high school do not always know what to expect. It can be harder for some and easier for others, but we believe that your high school is experience is what you make of it. During your experience you will face a lot of hard times. Your grades might fail, friendship may die, and sometimes you start to mature and branch out. It is good to have a good support system, people that are willing to help you and push you when you need it. We have been through alot and have friends who have been through things different from us. We know a lot from being in some situations. High school is a fun place and staying active in activity is also a helpful source to staying connected with other people who are at your school.

All We Need -Savion

This song was made one day when I was feeling overly happy about living in general. and I thought to myself "there aren't too many happy songs being made these days." I thought what a great idea it would be to try making a happy song instead of the sad songs you might hear on the radio. This song is me spitting what makes me happy on a track performing, writing, having a dedicated fan base, family, friends. This capstone project helped me figure out what makes me happy why I like to make music helped me dig deeper into the technicality of the music, what's going on behind the scenes. My favorite part of this process was having people critique my writing and having it fit the beat, figuring that whole process out was fun but challenging like a riddle in puzzle form.

About My Capstone

Leaving Science Leadership Academy(SLA) to start a new beginning, I felt like it was only right to give the students and teachers of SLA something different to think and learn about. I chose to raise awareness for Bipolar Disorder. I chose to do this project because multiple people in my family suffer from a mental illness and the most common one is bipolar disorder. I would like for people to know that this is a real problem in the world that is not talked about. So, I put together a presentation to educate my fellow peers and teachers about bipolar disorder that reflects on the school's five core values. Bipolar Disorder is when a person's chemicals in the brain are not regulated and can result in a depressed or manic state. The process of making my final product which is a video and power point which was a good experience. With the final video to my project my partner and I were able to interview two people who have bipolar disorder and get to know what they go through and some things that they deal with. The interview was quite easy, the making and editing was challenging but in the end, it worked out. In this project, I was able to learn more about bipolar disorder and learn how it affects people. This project was extremely helpful to me and I am hoping that it will be useful to someone else in need of information.

David Baker Capstone

For our capstone we created an indoor pitching mound. Nick and I have been playing baseball together for as long as I can remember, it was great to continue throughout high school. Our capstone to relate to baseball, because we wanted to give back to the team we play for throughout our high school career.
Constructing the pitcher's mound was harder than we anticipated. We knew the overall dimensions of the mound before we started building, and we had most of the building supplies in school. Moving all of the wood was hard work. Once we finished moving all of the supplies we had to sketch our design. The dimension of our mound is 4’x8’x10”. We spent a lot of our time in the makerspace, becoming certified on almost all of the equipment was very rewarding because it allows me to use the tools for other projects in the future.
The hardest part of creating our mound was creating the ramp. We made this process easier by creating the mound in two parts. There was top box you would stand on and that was 4’x3’. The ramp was the hard part and had to cut at a 20° angle. We originally tried to cut this with a circular saw but the blade did not cut all the through the wood. So we resorted to cutting it on the table saw and this was difficult because we had to create a sled to cut the wood on an angle.
Assembling the two pieces was a piece of cake. If we had to do something for this project. I would probably. Use grip tape instead of the turf. The turf really does make it look nice but if you are wearing normal sneakers you will slide, I think this could have been prevented by just using grip tape.

Kimberly Caraballo: Capstone

When I think about my future the first thought that comes to mind is how much I want to be a veterinarian. The feeling you get when you help an animal is so priceless and beautiful. In the United States alone there is an estimate of 70 million stray animals. Let me repeat that… 70 MILLION. This opportunity that my capstone has given me was directed towards my future. For my capstone, I decided that I wanted to help these animals in any way that I could. In Philadelphia, there are stray cats found everywhere… especially where I live. I decided that throughout the school year I would document how I helped them through journal entries, pictures, and video footage. In my neighborhood alone there's about 11 cats that I feed daily and the story to how I acquired all these is amazing. The time, money and effort that I have put into taking care of these animals are evident throughout these journals. Every two weeks I buy a $15 24 pound bag of cat food, and throughout the school year, I've bought blankets, houses, boxes and food trays for them. I spend time with the cats and treat them like my own honestly. If my father weren’t deadly allergic to cats I would probably adopt two of them. I hope that through these journals and pictures you can see how the cats I take care of impacted me. Especially my last journal. Down below you’ll find journal entries scattered throughout the months.

Abstract:
For my capstone what I decided to make was a book. The purpose of this book was to be entertaining yet possess some information regarding things that could happen to our world if we did not take care of it. To most people this could seem like a simple task but a good amount of research was needed in order to picture how the future would look if say, we don't take action on global warming. I first started out by attempting to write the book without any outline and it was horrible. But that helped me realize I needed to act as if I never knew about the book and that was I made an actual outline to remember what to say next. Through the creation of this book I learned how to describe a setting better and how to blend in information with a form of entertainment. Even if it was tedious due to all the editing that was involved I found it fun and hopefully others will like this book and think about our environmental issues more.

An efficient peer to peer mentor ship program is something that is very challenging to organize. Unfortunately I learned this the hard way, over the course of the nine months which I had to organize my very own peer to peer mentor ship program. Sadly the mentor ship program which I have organised with only two members who were actually fully able to participate isn’t what I expected it to become. All the beneficial principles still apply to the outcome of an efficient peer to peer mentor ship program, members both mentees and mentors of program still develop communication and self advocacy skills. However the approach we take to starting the program can ultimately determine its consistency and success. In other words the program I organised tended to have a majority of senior upperclassman participating as mentors, which was ideal at the time because these students had the most high school experience. However high school seniors at Science Leadership Academy At Beeber tend to have a full plate with applying to colleges, working on their capstone projects, and just keeping up with the usual load of school work they have. So I found that not many mentors had the time to meet weekly with their mentees. Another issue was that the way I started the program; it could have been much better in terms of the process in choosing mentors and mentees to participate. Originally mentors would have to go through mentor training to have a mentee but including this within the program is almost another program interior on its own. That being said organizing both these things at the same time made it more difficult to make sure both aspects were running efficiently. Lastly when I was organizing this program I had two mentors, but I still couldn’t organize all these things by myself in time to start the program early on in the year. Starting the program early on in the year is probably another major aspect of an efficient mentor ship program, this way mentors and mentees can get to know each other throughout the year not half way through it. The reason I was unable to start the program like this is because I had to first organize everything on my own, if I were to start over I would work on this during the summer leading up to the school year.

Capstone Bibliography
What’s a stereotype? A stereotype is clearly defined as “a perceived notion about someone, especially about a group of people”. Teenage life isn’t easy. Being gay isn’t easier. Many gay people growing up and as an adult can face many acts of discrimination and stereotypical interactions with others. Throughout this project will be many voices on stereotypes and experiences with being stereotyped and discriminated within the system. Hopefully, this project will help people everywhere understand more about what stereotyping is and how it is used everywhere. Samantha and I have created a movie, nonetheless, created by 2 female lesbians in an interracial relationship, focusing on stereotypes, what the view of stereotypes are considered at SLA@Beeber, and the experiences Samantha had in the work-field. We share our stories to educate the world on stereotyping and just because we only have 2 stories to broadcast, does not mean that hundreds of people all over the world aren’t. It’s an epidemic that needs to be controlled and stopped. Imagine if it were you getting stereotyped out of a job, or school when you needed it the most.

Our goal in creating this Capstone was to educate the minds of children, adults, mothers and fathers, teachers, etc all over this country, and hopefully, the world, to become more open-minded and not to just judge people on what they look like from the first glance. If we all came together and got to know one another before stereotyping, the world could actually become a better place. Not all black people steal. Not all white people hate black people. Not all Muslims are terrorists. Not all Greeks eat baklava. Not all Asians get straight A’s. Stop the stereotyping.
