For my capstone I chose to do a presentation on Autism awareness. What is Autism? a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts. I chose to do a presentation on Autism awareness because I wanted to define Autism in a more human way and I became interested in learning more about Autism because during my junior year I was a intern at The Center for Autism and I had a wonderful experience. Before I started my internship there I was a little nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. I thought the kids were going to be nerve-racking. I got to build relationships with the students and in a way I felt so happy being around them. As I learned more about Autism I realized not enough people are aware about it and a lot of people have this stereotype about autistic children which is not true. While doing this project I learned so much more about Autism. I also aquired healthy relationships with amazing people I met. So here is a presentation about what Autism is and the different myths that there are and a mother sharing how passionate she is about her son who has Autism. I went through the process of interviewing people and sitting down with the Founder and CEO of Digitability a software to help people with cognitive disabilities such as Autism to help with social development.

EARTH DAY & PUBLIC HEALTH
Tower Gardens Photojournal
When Ms.Aziz first introduced this project I was fairly excited about it because I never really planted anything inside before. I thought it was really interesting and cool that we have these resources to these kind of projects. I also liked how she introduced us to different ways of gardening. Tower gardening promotes an environmentally just society because this brings the community together. This also benefits the rest of us as a whole. Our land is being used to grow natural resources. This can lead to a healthier for many people. This natural resources being grown can be sold as well. Young teens, and children are the future of this generation, so having them activate in this can help the world spread more quickly, and also draw more interest. Some factors that may have affected our garden is that one of our plants didn’t grow and that might have been because it was to much water or light.
The impact of humans on natural systems has been significant for decades. However, technology and population growth have dramatically increased both the rate and the scale of human-induced change. Sustainability is the use of Earth's resources to meet our current needs without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The ecological footprint is the land area required to support a person's lifestyle.
Plants | Observations/questions |
Peppers (Nick) | What color will the peppers be? I observed my pepper seeds were really small. I noticed the vermiculite had to fill over half the hole and I wonder why? |
Marketmore Cucumber (Imani) | How long will it take for the cucumbers to sprout? My seed were oval like. I also observed that the cucumber seeds were relatively smaller than I expected them to be. The lettuce is currently growing but I don’t see any cucumbers sprouting My lettuce is currently still sprouting and getting bigger but i still don’t see any cucumbers I wonder when the cucumbers will start to grow? The ph balance in our water has dropped |
Gourmet Lettuce (Jada) | Why are gourmet lettuce seeds so small? I had to fill my hole differently than everyone else’s because my seeds were smaller. The pH balance of the water is very high. The lettuce is the only plant that’s growing somewhat. The tomatoes and the peppers haven’t started to sprout yet. The cucumbers started to grow as well as the tomatoes. The lettuce has grown a lot and so has the cucumbers and tomatoes. The peppers haven’t grown at all. |
Beefsteak Tomato (Moesha) | 1/10/17 How will these large tomatoes grow in a small indoor environment? I realized the tomato seeds were small compared to the actual size of the tomato when it grows. Each of my group members and I had to plant two seeds each except for Jada and her gourmet lettuce. 1/13/17 The lettuce is the only plant currently sprouting. When will the tomatoes sprout? 1/17/17 The lettuce has sprouted and so did the cucumbers. Unfortunately, the tomatoes and peppers haven’t sprouted. When will the peppers and tomatoes sprout? 1/24/17 The pH balance of the water went from 7.0 to 6.5. The cucumbers are growing the fastest. The peppers have still not grown and I wonder why? I hope my tomato plant doesn't get intertwined with the lettuce. |
TED TALK : How does HIV/AIDS affect life expectancy?

“How does having HIV/AIDS affect life expectancy?”
HIV is an infection that attacks the body’s immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which help the immune system fight off infections. If left untreated, HIV reduces the number of CD4 cells (T cells) in the body, making the person more likely to get infections or infection-related cancers and can lead to AIDS(“What is HIV/AIDS?”, 2016). HIV/AIDS weakens the body and presents a pathway for opportunistic diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, and meningitis(Loewenson and Whiteside4). The HIV/AIDS widespread is one of the most devastating health crises of modern times, ruining families and communities throughout the world(Ashford1). Life expectancy is defined as the average number of years that a person can expect to to live in. Stigma, globalization, and human development are the three main focus for why these specific countries have low life expectancy levels.
Human development is basically about gaining freedom and opportunities and improving your well-being. It is about creating an environment in which people can develop their full potential and lead productive, creative lives in accord with their needs and interests. Making sure human development has an approach to HIV/AIDS helps to focus on the study of people rather than on the virus. HIV/AIDS is affecting the Human Development Index (HDI). The index measures basic human capabilities, ranking countries according to their average levels of life expectancy, educational attainment and basic purchasing power(Womenaid International1). Researchers have concluded that the world lost on average 1.3 years of human development progress due to the pandemic between 1982 and 1992 (Womenaid International1).
AIDS is both a product and a cause of globalization. Globalization affects all of human life, including health and well being. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has pointed out the global nature of human health and welfare and globalization has given rise to a trend toward finding common solutions to global health challenges. HIV/AIDS is affecting the global human development of African countries through its devastating impact on health and demographic indicators such as life expectancy at birth, healthcare assistance, age and sex distribution. By 2005, more than 25 million people had died and an estimated 39 million were living with HIV. An estimated 4 million people were newly infected with HIV(Ashford1). Countries that have been hard hit by the AIDS epidemic have seen mortality surge and life expectancy drop in the last decade. Such as Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asian countries. When looking at the graphs below you’ll be able to see this impact.
HIV/AIDS was discovered 1981; the virus, 1983. These Gapminder bubbles show you how the spread of the virus was in 1983 in the world, or how it was estimated. In the graph the y axis represents the life expectancy and the x axis are represented by people living with HIV total of all ages. The total number of people in all ages that are estimated to be infected by HIV, including those without symptoms. The life expectancy represents the average numbers of years a newborn child would live if current mortality patterns were to stay the same. The bubbles represents the country and the size of the bubbles represent the population of the country. As the x value changes the y values increases which indicates that it’s a negative correlation. The graph is pretty consistent as it’s increasing there aren’t any outliers. As you can see in the first graph when it was first discovered only a few countries had the disease the life expectancy was still at an average rate. Around 1987 the graph starts to decrease a lot which means that the people with HIV started to increase and the life expectancy decreased in the countries. As you can see in the graph when HIV/AIDS has already increased and affected countries China has the biggest population size which means the more people affected the lower the life expectancy is for that given country.
HIV/AIDS is related back to stigma because it refers to prejudice, negative attitudes and abuse directed at people living with HIV and AIDS. In 35% of countries with available data, over 50% of men and women report having discriminatory attitudes towards people living with HIV(AVERT1). Some people are pushed away by family, peers and the wider community, while others face poor treatment in healthcare and educational settings, no basic human rights, and psychological damage. These all limit access to HIV testing, treatment and other HIV services. For example, A man living with HIV in China filed a lawsuit in 2012 after he was denied a job as a primary school teacher when the employer found out he was HIV-positive. That’s where the low life expectancy comes in because people start to die off because they aren’t getting the fair treatment that they need.
Some people may argue that HIV/AIDS isn’t the cause of low life expectancy. Life expectancy refers to the expected number of years of life remaining for an individual at a given age. Overall there are several factors, including sex, race, and lifestyle habits, are known to influence life expectancy. One of the biggest factors that people may say is the cause of low life expectancy is drugs. Drugs have been the main cause for suicide for decades. People have so manys ways to obtain drugs and they overdose and die. So, others don’t blame diseases and infections for the reasons that people are dying off.
HIV/AIDS is a personal, social and economic tragedy as well as a global health threat. In Europe and North America, AIDS is now the leading cause of death for adults under 45(The Global HIV/AIDS Epidemic1). The above statement is the main reason why I decided to focus on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. People overall aren’t very aware in my opinion of the spread of HIV/AIDS. Even though I didn’t focus more so on North America but HIV/AIDS is definitely on the rise because so many people ignore the fact that this disease is real and incurable. While doing this essay I learned a lot about globalization and the stigma of people who are affected by this.

Philly's Fight for Environmental Justice Q2
Our video addressed the issues regarding crude oil trains and how Philly can take action to make sure that if one of the trains passing through happens to derail, we have a plan and can take action. Oil trains run through Pittsburg, New Jersey, New York, Minnesota, Washington state, California, and Pennsylvania. We chose to focus on this because the media wasn’t really bringing attention to the issue and also Pennsylvanians don’t have any laws to protect their residents from this issue. This is a major problem because in the past three years there have been three derailments just in Pennsylvania. We need to take a stand and make a law to make sure we can prevent future accidents. Everyone should have access to clean air water and soil, and to a healthy, safe, livable community. Unfortunately, these rights are often denied to minority and low-income communities, creating a disparate risk and environmental injustice for Pennsylvanians.
We set up our video as a news report. In the video you have news reporter, Governor Tom Wolf, Senator Hillary Clinton, and a random resident from the neighborhood. Governor Tom Wolf and Senator Hillary Clinton are discussing their major concerns who on the crude oil trains and why it’s important that the issue is addressed.
My contributions to this project was help create the script, helping edit the video, and set up recording times. I believe that I did a fair share amount of the work. Things I did well during this project was keeping everything organized and staying on top of the checkpoints and something I could have done differently was maybe thinking thoroughly on the PSA. I think towards the end of the project my group members pulled it together to create a great video. The most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA was knowing that I’m getting awareness out there to the world. To be a part of something like that makes me want to take more steps to get other environmentally justice issues out there.
Standing with Standing Rock Blog
People are using hashtags such as #dakotaaccesspipeline, #dapl, and #nodapl to create awareness. When people use these hashtags they are fighting and spreading the issue. This method of action is very effective because social media is consistently being used and people across the world can know about this environmental justice issue. Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
The article “Norway's Largest Bank Sells Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline Company” was about how a very important and large Norwegian bank is pulling 3.5 billion dollars worth of assets in the companies that are behind the North Dakota Access Pipeline. American people and the government can create an evironmentally safe place for America by the government supporting environmental educational programs.

ANIMAL KINGDOM
Describe your project
For my project I decided to try fauvism. I wanted to do something with animals so I drew the main animals in the animal kingdom which is the lion, elephant, and gorilla. It’s colorful because that’s what fauvism is a lot of colors that pop out.
What knowledge did you already have about the project before you started?
- I knew that fauvism is a regular painting with a lot of colors that pop out. You can draw anything you want but the goal is to have bright colors or colors that get’s people attention. What new skill did you want to learn coming into the project?
The skill I wanted to learn in this project is how to put realistic values into my project.Did you accomplish this goal?
Yes, I accomplished this goal because I feel like the animals I drew look like what I wanted them to. They have so much details. How do you know you accomplished the goal? If you didn’t accomplish the goal, why do you think that is?
I know that I accomplished my goal because I took the time to draw my pictures to make them have so much real value to them. I try very hard to make them actually look like what they’re suppose to be.What other skill(s) did you learn along the way?
I learned how to draw different animals. What are you most proud of in this project?
I’m most proud that I got it accomplished and that It looks very nice. I’m happy about my project overall because it looks like how I wanted it to beWhat would you do differently if you had to do the project over again?

"DOODLE ART"
As an artist, I create art that speaks to me and others about the specific art that i’m working on. I don’t think i’m a very good artist but I try to get deep into my drawings and paintings so they can be as detailed as possible. My goals as an artist is try to make paintings or drawings that tells a story behind them. I love painting and drawing because it’s also a way that I can express myself on paper.
Part of my process before I begin my drawing was to research as much information about doodle art. I looked at different themes that artist have done so I can get and idea of what I wanted to do for doodle art. I came across an idea which was nature and peace. I drew the word peace in bubble letters and drew a peace symbol. For this project I used Crayola markers.
In conclusion, I enjoyed working on surrealism it was challenging.

Time and Setting of the Interview
Place : Ms. Walker home in Philadelphia, PA
Date : May 18, 2014
Persons present during the interview : Ms.Walker and Jada
Jada : Good afternoon, today is Sunday May 18, 2014 it is 1:20 where I will be interviewing Ms.Walker about her life during the Civil Rights Movement. So, Ms.Walker lets start off by asking you some questions about your family, when and where were you born.
Ms.Walker : I was born May 27, 1951
Jada : Now lets talk about your family
Ms.Walker : My mother was a school teacher. My father was a construction worker. I have one sibling. We lived on a small block in West Philadelphia. Where every family had two parents and home. Most of them had cars and all the fathers worked. It was just one big happy family.
Jada : What was your sister name?
Ms.Walker : Dolores
Jada : What school did y'all attend?
Ms.Walker : I attended West Philadelphia High School. She attended Bok Vocational High School. We both attended McMichael Elementary School.
Jada : How was school during the Civil Rights Movement?
Ms.Walker : It was okay. In our neighborhood school it was all black. For 9th grade we were bused to South Philadelphia from West Philadelphia for Junior High. Which was a white neighborhood. Well it was white and black but it was ok.
Jada : Since there was white and black did you experience any racism?
Ms. Walker : Not in school I didn't.
Jada : So outside of school ?
Ms.Walker : No, to be honest I was grown when I experienced racism. I was at a nursing home visiting my aunt and I got called a Nigger for the first time. By some one who was about 90 years old stuck in a wheel chair in a nursing home. And I thought that was sad to be in that position and to have those type of feelings.
Jada : How do you feel about the Civil Rights Movement?
Ms.Walker : The Civil Rights Movement was a very good experience. Living in the North we didn't experience to much of it. It was hidden a lot but in the South it was not hidden. I remember my mother took my sister and I to her hometown in South Carolina. We went to a store and while we were in the store shopping we had to use the restroom. When we got to the restroom it said colored and white. That was a new experience for my sister and I. It was a airy feeling. Another experience we had in the South was going to the laundromat with my aunt. One side were for whites and the other side was for colored.
Jada : How old were y'all at that time.
Ms.Walker : We were teenagers any where from 14 to 17.
Jada : How has your views on race changed in the last decades.
Ms.Walker : Well I never . .I wasn't taught that way. So I never had any racism. But on this day . . this morning I was standing on my porch. The neighborhood has changed so much. That all of the older people have died. Their properties have been sold or rented out. So we have a lot of college students now. I spoke to a college student walking down the street as I was standing on my porch and he didn't acknowledge me. I thought that was sad for 2014.
Jada : Well do you think it was because of his race ?
Ms.Walker : It was racism. He probably was taught to be that way. My feelings were I've been here for 62 years and if you're going to come in you should be polite.
Jada : Since you were born in the year 1955 that was the year Rosa Parks
Ms. Walker : I was born 1951
Jada : I'm sorry 1951 so you were born before Rosa Parks went to jail for the bus boycott so you were about three. So you really didn't have much experience with that.
Ms.Walker : No we .. Most of the Civil rights War we watched on tv. The right to vote and the bombing of the churches. We were around but we were children. I was sad and we did a lot of crying watching the news because it was very sad. Children couldn't go church while being afraid of being blown up.
Jada : Has your mother and father shared their stories with you about segregation?
Ms. Walker : Yes, my mother told us storied of going to the movies. She had two friends a female and a male that both could pass for white. The white people sat on the main floor and black people had to enter from a different door and sit on the balcony. And how her friends sat on the balcony with them and didn't pass for white.
Jada : Well thank you Ms. Walker for your time
Ms. Walker : You're welcome.
