Lamira Jeffreys Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Lamira Jeffreys in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 8:00 am

Our Awareness PSA basically talked about what most kids or teens today are sometimes are too shy about. It shed light on the statistics of reproductive health and some benefits from it. So I decided to do the topic of Reproductive health because firstly I wanted to do a topic that we really don’t know that much of. I wanted to also educate myself  on a topic like this that’s very under-looked compared to many others. I contributed to my group by doing everything visually and video wise. I helped bring the picture together as well as help conduct some of the interviews. I feel as though we did well by finding out resources that were trustworthy. I think the honesty and comfortless within our interviewers especially with a topic that’s so embarrassing for some they did very well with speaking on with their own prior knowledge. If I could do this again I would try and make it more entertaining for younger viewers so that it was seem as though they are just being talked at. I want them to understand by being entertained if they find little scripts or methods for them to be entertain it will be something they will take with them for the rest of their lives. The most meaningful thing about our PSA would have to be the authenticity and realness of our interviews it’s not as if they were planned or rehearsed they were talking from experiences and using the utmost honesty.

“Knowing that it has never been done before makes me want to fight even harder.”
― Misty Copeland

The Capstone project that my two peers and I decided to complete is a dance showcase. The vision for this showcase was to be able to show the individuality of my group members to successfully create a cohesive artistic piece. Dance holds a special place in each one of our lives.
Dancing is a unique art that only requires passion. To us dance is just not any movement put together; it's harder than many people may think. Dancing has certain moral and lessons. “ Five! Six! Seven! Eight! Pull up, turn out, head straight, toes pointed and tuck your butt”. Being a dancer takes a lot of courage. Dancers are consistently told there aren’t good enough to make it professionally or their too “thick” to be a ballerina. Dance is the best medium in which people show the world their true colors, showing their vulnerable side. When we dance, we connect with the music that affects our body, our thoughts, and the mind. We dance because there is nothing that can engage us physically, emotionally and socially. It's a journey of growth that helps us understand the world from a different perspective.
Throughout a dance career, you get the best dancers in the world and ones who inspire you as a person. Our vision was to share our craft with others, we thought that making up an SLA dance team would help others to break out their shells and try to do something positive within our community. Within this project, we learn how to become a role model and for them to become part of a sisterhood. However, the making of this team was not the easiest task.

Summary/ Reflection

In this project our goal was to become a travel agency and create different package for our customers. We had to make sure that it was affordable, fun, took care of their daily needs, and in Spanish. We had to chose a Spanish speaking country and build around it. This project was very interesting and very hard to do because making the packages affordable and fun wasn't easy. We chose the country Cuba since there isn't any direct flights from Philadelphia to Cuba. We had to make adjoining flights that will still get them there in time for check in. In all I had a great time working with my group-mates and getting this project done it was so stressful. But we got it done with time to spare before we had to present.

Nocturne-Ruben Dario

Silencio de la noche, doloroso silencio

nocturno... ¿Por qué el alma tiembla de tal manera?

Oigo el zumbido de mi sangre,

dentro de mi cráneo pasa una suave tormenta.

¡Insomnio! No poder dormir, y, sin embargo,

soñar. Ser la auto-pieza

de disección espiritual, ¡el auto-Hamlet!

Diluir mi tristeza

en un vino de noche

en el maravilloso cristal de las tinieblas...

Y me digo: ¿a qué hora vendrá el alba?

Se ha cerrado una puerta...

Ha pasado un transeúnte...

Ha dado el reloj trece horas... ¡Si será Ella! ...

Reflection

I had a good time with this project and getting it done on time. I felt as tough for my first project that I did alone without much help from a teacher I did very well. I liked making my own poem and being creative. Learning about Ruben Dario was very inspiring. He made history with his style of writing and started a new way of thinking. He became the voice of a new genre in writing.
Summary

In this project we had to work by ourselves and learn about a famous poet in Latin history. We had to come up with a short biography of the poet of our choice and their accomplishments in life. Then choose a poem from them that really stood out to us. Next, we had to give an short autobiography of ourselves and what we felt were the biggest accomplishments of our lives growing up. Then create our own poem based off of the themes that were in our poet's poem which was very easy if your chose the right poem.

In This Project we were told to create a news broadcast incorporating Breaking News, Health, and Fashion. We had to make it flow and seem as though it was a real show. I think me and my group did that very well, we had every aspect that she was looking for and we added some comedy. This process was very difficult due to the different takes we had to do and creating the scene. I had fun with creating this project due to everyone's different personalities that brought the video to life.

Spanish Conversational By: Lamira Jeffreys And Aaliyah Ellerbee

Posted by Lamira Jeffreys in SPANISH 2 - Moran - E on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 1:55 pm
In this Project me and my partner had to create a informational presentation using the basic Spanish dialog and show our understanding. I found this presentation very fun to make because we got to show a little bit of ourselves through our work. We were able to come up with a full script and translate it in Spanish. We talked about all the things that we have learned and showed them throughout the videos. There were a few topics where we had to compare them in the dialog they were two completely different things and we had to show how we could use them in a conversation.

In this book project it was very difficult to do if you are a huge procrastinator like me. Me and my partner were able to do this project on time just not to the best of our abilities and for that we have got the grade we deserved. Since the grade we have gotten was very low we have decided to resubmit the book to present with a better looking book and above this is what is above. To go above and beyond with our presentation me and my partner created a puppet show which gotten us way higher grade in the presentation aspect

Día de los Muertos

Día de los Muertos is one of the most celebrated holiday in the Mexican culture. It’s a day where we celebrate the lives of our loved ones who we have lost. At first I thought it was just a sad and creepy day for everyone but when I actually got to watch a few videos and learned more information about the holiday I realized that it’s not a sad day. It’s a day where you’re surrounded by food, music, family, and flowers. We get to cherish all the little things that make a person the way they are and what we took for granted about the person when they were alive. I love all of the creativity and thought that goes into Día de los Muertos from the different foods to the different ideas people use to present their ofrendas and altars. I know what you're thinking what in the world is an ofrenda? Well an ofrenda is a decorative stand where it would hold pictures of the one that passed with all the things that the person liked and enjoyed the most during their time here.

I was glad that I got to get a feel for this holiday and the way another culture deal with the feeling of losing a loved one. In class I based my project off of my grandmother her name was Carol Washington she was the third oldest out of eight children but she was the oldest out of four girls. She was born February 10, 1956 and past April 19, 2008 she lived until the age 52. She was born in North Carolina but was raised in city of brotherly love Philadelphia. Married my grandfather Raymond Washington in May 1972 and had five children. She was into dental and health care for many years and decided to pursue a career in dental.

Me and my Grandmother weren’t as close as when she was live but doing this project it showed me that we were just alike in so many ways. As a younger child I did not always get to see the greatest parts of my grandmother due to my behavior and what they would call a “smart mouth” and as old fashioned woman I was disciplined for my actions. However after participating in my first Día de los Muertos I have gotten to refresh and preserve my memory of her taught me that she means a great deal to me. Making me wish that I had more time to spend with a person who was just like me in characteristics and personality.

I decided to create my sugar skull in the remembrance of my grandmother because one she is my grandmother. Also, because she was my mother’s mother and my mother loved her dearly. My mother means a lot to me so I wanted to do this project for her to remember her mother since she can’t reflect herself doing this project. So I believe that my sugar skull reflects my grandmother because the colors I used reflected my favorite memory of her which was during Easter. Which she let me decorate all the eggs and hide my cousins and my brothers easter baskets all around the house. So I decorated my skull and mask in what I believe are easter colors. I also added braces on my skulls teeth because that reflected her being a dentist and when I think of dentistry I think of braces.

Día de los Muertos open up my mind a lot for celebrating my loved ones because it let us do what our loved ones enjoyed. We can kind of get to walk into their shoes for the day by eating everything they loved and doing activities that they felt were stimulating and fun. I think that this is something that everyone could enjoy after they finished grieving or if they want to use this holiday as a grieving resolution. Because it lets you have a day where you get to talk about the person and get out all of your final cries till next year or their birthday. I feel as though this was a great exercise for the class it let us do exactly what the holiday encourage you to do. I would like to bring this holiday home with me because it let me get to know more about my grandmother even though I didn’t know her that well it gave me time to actually sit down with my mother and learn a lot more to my grandmother then what I knew previously.

In this project it was very personal we had to talk about a person who was very dear to us and replicate them throughout skulls and mask. I chose to do my grandmother because she was a dear person to my family and I feel as though I didn't really get the chance to get to know her on a personal level. Doing this project I got to get a little close to her through my mother and informational that I have collected just to due this project.

College Interview By: Lamira Jeffreys

Posted by Lamira Jeffreys in SPANISH 2 - Moran - E on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 12:28 pm
In this college interview project my partner Shawn we talked about Temple University. Shawn got to play the person giving the interview and I played the person receiving the interview. We talked about the college life and the activities that will benefit us throughout the college years. It was difficult at first trying to figure out ways to interview the person giving the interview but once we realized how to do that it was a piece of cake. I actually enjoyed this project because it flowed very easy with me and my partner doing the same amount of work and everything being equal.

Oral History: Geneva Flyod

Abstract
I my  assignment I have decided to interview My best Friends grandmother Geneva Flyod. In this interview she talks about her life growing up and the way she feels about Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, & Rosa Parks.
Research

In my interview my friends grandmother talked about her being a black panther and her feeling as though that really changed her life being one. I learned from history learn that if you didn't know what a black Panther was a group of people who believe that the mom-violent campaign of Martin Luther King Jr. had failed any promises changes to their lifestyle. She also, Mentions Huey P Newton he was a man who help found the black panther movement and civil rights campaign in america. Finally she mentioned her wanting to be apart of the Montgomery March and her wanting to help the fight voting registration for blacks in America.

Lamira Jeffreys: Lamira Jeffreys I am Interviewing Geneva Floyd The date is 5/31/2015 and the time is 8:21 Pm. Alright Hello, So my First questions is how was it growing up as a African American child?

Geneva Floyd: Rough, It was hard; it was hard but we survived but it was hard.

LJ: How often did you learn about black historians back in the day?

GF: Only by watching television and seeing the life interaction of black african americans.

LJ:What are some things you remember from Martin Luther king Speech?

GF: I remember they were um talking about freedom and expression of I remember them, them what was they doing hanging black men quite often.

LJ: Did his words inspire you to do anything different in life?

GF: Yes it inspired me to get a better education

LJ: Have you ever been to one of his speeches?

GF: No I listen to alot of his records

LJ: How was school like for you around the time of segregation?

GF: I don’t know I didn't go to a segregated school i went to an all black school i dont know f it was segregated or not I ain't go to school with no white folks Only white people was the teachers

LJ: Were you able to protest when you were younger?

GF: Yes but I wasn’t able to protest because my mother didn’t allowed it, my mother didn’t allow us to go to none of them rallies. She was scared her girls would get hurt.

LJ: How did you feel when you heard about Rosa parks ?

GF: I dont understand how she wanted to be on the bus with white folks, I don't know why they wanted to segregate the bathrooms and stuff because we was much cleaner than the white folks you know I really didnt understand that and thats when our food got to be garbage.

LJ: Did you agree with her not getting up? or did you think she was over reacting?

GF: I don’t think she should have gotten up why should she I think the girl rosa should sit on her ass and let the white man stand up.

LJ: If you could chose to be apart of any protest which one would you chose to be in and why?

GF: Today I would rather be in the Montgomery march i would have marched because the bus boycott we was paying money and was treated like we was inferior and that wasn’t wassup if

i gotta pay the same fair as the white man i should be treated the same way.

LJ: What would your stance be would it be nonviolent or by any means necessary?

GF: Any means necessary because we were being brutalized as a race of people and i think we should have picked em arms and straightened all this out.

LJ: I heard that you were a black panther growing up how was the experience of being one?

GF: Being a black panther greatly benefited me because it made me realized that my people were suppressed and they need uh a partner to come up and fight for our rights Huey P Newton stood up for our rights and he fought for our rights fought for the breakfast program we have today and the child care situation we have today which we really forgotten about.

LJ: Which protest do you think was more beneficial martin Luther king or Malcolm X?

GF: Since I was a nation of Islam participant I believe that Malcolm did more for the black people than Martin because Martin believe in nonviolence and Malcolm said by any means necessary like Huey P Newton said any means necessary we should not bow down and submit to violence or non segregation order why should we do that when we built this country with the white man.

I chose to do heels versus sneakers because those are common things that girls/ women go through to look pretty. But as the saying says" Pretty hurts" and they sure are going through a lot of pain. I want people to know what things can happen when they are putting on a pair of heels and what damage can be done.

In this experiment we chose to light up a hat that wires are set up in parallel and series wires.  We chose a hat because its easy and its different and also if we would wanted to do something where you could also wear this designs. We both like creating things where you can interact with the object and is eye catching. You may ask what is art and we say art could be anything we can make it be. Even the littlest things that you may make or do is art whether you like it or not.

The process of this project was to figure out what object we wanted to make our circuit experiment on. The circuit experiment me and my partner decided to make a winter hat light up.The second, part was choosing what kind of lights we wanted to use. We chose to use lights with color to them to make our hat more interesting. The next, step to our process was to find out the resistance in each bulb. We used in total twelve different bulbs with many different resistances that were very hard to calculate at the time. The hardest part of the project was setting up our wires trying to find a way to make all twelve light light up. Which is not as easy as it seems it was actually harder than you think because the brightest we could get the lights could only be three in each series. After several days of thinking we finally made a way for the lights to light up we had to put our circuits in parallel and series.

We believe that our already known knowledge on something does change the we think or our understanding of it because we do get to learn more than we did before. Also, we get to compare our previous knowledge and see if what we may have been told was the right way or see if we may have missed something from before.

We chose to set up our circuit in parallel and and series because the lights would be at their brightest only with three in a series so we then decided in order for us to be able to add more lights we would have had to make the lights parallel to each other. So for us to do this we had to add each series by themselves using the correct formula. Then we had to take the sum of that and plug them into a parallel formula because they each were parallel to each other and got the sum of 4.45 . We expected this circuit to light up the hat and work so that it is physically able to be worn while lit.

When we look in the mirror we see our reflection and to some people its not good enough. So we all need to learn how to accept what we see because it will never change.  45% of young people experience bullying before the age of 18. 30% of people have gone to self harm because of bullying. I chose this picture because the mirror is the number one struggle for children because it hurts their self-esteem. We all want to be like some one else but we try to change our flaws to be like that but end up being worst.
