Nigeria Parker Capstone

Posted by Nigeria Parker in Capstone on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 12:04 am

I would like to start off by saying that I do not have a passion, a dream, nor something that my heart is set on pursuing in life. Though I am good at many things there is only one thing that I can honestly say I would never get tired of, that would be doing hair. I getting better at it but before I show you my work I want you to know that I try my best at everything I do. I cannot work in the shop, the money that I made went to a foster care system called Turning Points for Children.

For my project I made a hair portfolio. People would come to the shop and get their hair done by me. I learned a lot about doing hair while working in the shop. I met a lot of new people and I learned the ways of business. This experience is helping me decide on what I want to do with my life. My final project is allowing me to look back on the work that I have done and improve on it. The project is also showing me whether I am either good or bad and what I can do better.

Look At The Life Of An African American Woman

Look At The Life Of An African American Woman

Life of a Black Philly Kid

People ask where I'm from then assume they know me

Well I'm from,

Where family are back stabbers and backstabbers are your closest friends

I‘m from the city of brotherly love

Where love is a lie and love is hate

No one sees what goes on, No one cares what happens

I’m from where guns are popular

Where you could get shot just from walking down the street

And when a White cop shoots a black kid it's the black kids fault

I’m from where cops fight you instead of help you

From where people are animals

Pigs, Rats, and Snakes

Where its right to take what's not yours

I'm from where we hide the truth because the lies are easier to believe

I say don't judge a book by its cover

I'm from when everyone knows every one

From where people fight for what they believe in

And from where people assume that we will live terrible life less lives because we are black

I'm from PHILLY!!

One of the prompts that we had to write a where I'm from poem. Well I took the liberty in rewriting mine because in the last 3 years at SLA, my teachers made us study about how being black changes things and we learned all about white privilege. In doing all of this studying of this topic I learn that people judge you on what you look like, where you come from, and how you speak. It maynot be the best way to do things but this is how people view other people.

The Break Up

Man you look like you have something to say.
I don't like the way you look at her, Sir.
Man!? I thought what you all had was all a blur.
Would you be bored with me if i made you stay.
To tell the truth I’m bored with you anyway.
Excuse me sir, but would you prefer her.
I really don't need you in my life, Sir.
I’m not even going to make you stay.
Please don't stay with me, cause I don't need you.
It's so sad to say, that I don't need you.
It's too clear to see that I don't need you.

For this poem I choose to do a free write. This fits under my topic because black women are always told that they carry this crazy attitude and that they treat people like the world has turned their back on them. In this poem the speaker is jumping to conclusions. He/she is upset about something they only got a glimpse of. So in their mind their partner is doing wrong. I think this is a strong stereotype for black women, matter of fact for women in general.

What is Life?

Anger is another person,
holding a gun to your head making you do violent things.
Anger is not a feeling, it's an opponent trying to make your forfeit,
Pushing you to your breaking point and never letting up
Until you finally break.

Love is an experiment.
Trying over and over again to see witch heart best coincides with yours,
getting hurt when something goes wrong, than trying something new just to make it right.
Love is when you go back to the first experiment
when you see that what you have is not working.
You make hypothesizes,
there not always good one
but you have to think about the outcome of the relationships.
You do test after test and still none is good for you.
You are that dependent variable
trying to see if that  independent variable changes you,
changes your life into something more,
into something better.
Your are jotting down notes in your memory
trying not to make the same mistake again.

I wrote this poem because I feel as though Black women or in this case women in general have trouble finding themselves because of Life. Love and Anger are problems that you can never officially get rid of. They stay in the back of your mind and heart. Seeing so many people get hurt and having so many people hurt you slowly brakes you and starts leading to other feelings life throws at you like trust issues and hatred.

In order to began making my spiral I started off with a right triangle. The first triangle starting off with one inch. Adding each triangle starting off with a 1 inch line, connecting the previous triangle to the next. I continued this process until I couldn't make no more. With each triangle the hypotenuse continuously increases.
Doing this project was fun and brought back some math memories from the 8th grade.

The Turtle In Orange Water

Posted by Nigeria Parker in ART ADV - Hertz - b2 on Friday, May 8, 2015 at 9:17 am
This is my turtle in orange water. It is clearly a turtle in orange water. It didn't take much time to paint and draw this but I had fun doing it. My goal of this painting was to use only three colors. The colors that I used were blue, red, and yellow. I've learned that blue and red do not make purple. I thought that was kind of funny. I learned that the different shades of colors never end. My favorite part in doing this painting was maxing paints and creating bight orange and a dark greenish blue. If I were to do this project over I would change a this except the colors I used.

Eulogy November 2nd

Reflection

The  person  that  passed  away  was  my  grandfather.  My  grandfather  meant  alot  to  me and  my  mom.  Whatever  I  wanted  he  got  for  me  and   when  I  was  bad  he  took  up  for  me.  My  grandfather  was  there  for  me  when  I  thought  no  one  else  was. He  is  the  reason  I   have  a  college  fund  and  he  is  also  the  reason  why  when   I  get  to  college  I’m  going  to  study  criminal  justice.  My  grandfather  was  a  hero  and  a  killer, not so proud of that. He  was  beyond  brave  and  I’m  going  to  be like  him  one  day, but I just won’t go to war. When my grandfather passed he made sure  that  his children  and  his  grandchildren  were  taken  care  of.

I  decided  to  create  a  skull  for  my  Grandfather   because  he  is  the  only  person  that  I  knew  personally  that  died  in  my  family.  I  also  thought  that  if  I  talked  about  him  I  would  feel like  I  knew  him  better,  that  I  might  even  remember  more  than  just  this.  He died when I was young.  So,  I  don’t  really  remember  a  lot  about  him.  I  do  know  that  we  were  really  close.  He  would  stop  by  our  house  almost  every  day. My  grandfather  would  give  us  candy,  take  us to  the  park,  he  would  buy  us  the  world  if  he  could.  Since  he  couldn't  he  gave  us  his  heart and  often  told  us  he  would  give  us  his  life.

My  sugar  skull  reflects  my  grandfather  because  my  grandfather  was  a  decorated officer and he was  in  the army. His  favorite  colors  were  purple  and  orange.  When  my  grandfather  was  living  he  always  wore  a  hat.  That  was  one  of  the  things  he  couldn't  leave  the  house  without. His  hats  were  his  everything. I  think  it  was  because  he  had  a  bald  head. I  mean  it  didn’t  make  him  look bad.  I  put  a  cage  around  the  skull  because  once  when  my  grandfather  was  talking  to  my  mom  I  over heard  and  he  said  that  he  feels  that  his  mind  is  in  a  cage.  Like  he  was  still  at  war  but  with  himself.   My  grandfather  was  a  positive  person. He  believed  that  there  was good  in  everyone.  He  tried  his  best  to  protect  everyone.  That's  the  reason  why  he chose  the  job  he  had. The  people  that  worked  with  and  under  him admired  the  way  he  took  care  of  things  including  his  family.

“Día de los Muertos”  opened  my  mind  up  to  celebrating  the  passing  of  my  grandfather  because  now  I  know  that  his  head  is  clear of  all  the  bad  things  that  he  went  through  when  he  was  living. This  holiday  makes  me  think  my  grandfather  is  in  a  better  place.  It  lets  me  think  he  is  happier.  I  don’t  really  care  much  for  the  holiday  but  doing  it  made  me  remember  just  a little  bit  more  about  my  grandfather.  I  didn't  think  that  this  holiday  would  be  a  good  one.

Me nombre es Nigeria Parker.

In  conclusion,  My  grandfather  was  a  great  man.  He  let  it  be  known  when  something wasn’t  right  or  when  he  had  a  funny  feeling  about  something.  He  was  usually  right  about  stuff like  that.  Any one  would  be  lucky  to  have  a  grandfather  like  him.  I  only  know  about  the things  my  mom  tell  me  and  the  little  I  remember  from  when  I  was  younger  but  my  grandfather  seems  like  he  was  a  good  person  inside  and  out.

The car of my dreams

Posted by Nigeria Parker on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 1:25 pm
  1. Describe your project
I drew and painted the car of my dreams. I is a car I have wanted since I was little. It was always cool.

  2. What knowledge did you already have about the project before you started?
I knew that I had to draw a lot of cars before I got the right one down. I knew it would be hard to point out the little details in my car but I did as best I could.

  3. What new skill did you want to learn coming into the project?
I learned how to draw the reflection of light with using the actual car colors, In stead of using white.

  4. Did you accomplish this goal?
I drew and painted my dream car. It took me 4 days to draw this car. Iknow that means I’m an amature drawer but I was proud of myself for trying.

  5. How do you know you accomplished the goal? If you didn’t accomplish the goal, why do you think that is?

I know I accomplished this goal. The car came out better than I thought. My opinion and my teachers is the only one that matters.

  6. What other skill(s) did you learn along the way?
I can honestly say that I am getting better with my hands. My hands are more steady and my paintings have more detail.

  7. What are you most proud of in this project?
I a proud that I drew the car as good as I did.

  8. What would you do differently if you had to do the project over again?

I think I would have kept my painting the same. Its too perfect to destroy, in my eyes anyway.

This was by far the hadest drawing ever. I almost gave up but I desided to try one more time. I think its going to be even harder to put it on the canvas. I'll try but I fear that my project is not going to be as good as I hoped. Hopefully everything will be ok.

The Tree of Life

20150113_133652

This is the tree of life. At the top of the tree you can clearly see that the tree is loseing its leaves. That means that time is slowly passing. I used early autumn late summer colors. To show the seasons passing as life goes on. This picture is supposed to show the beauty of life but, also the little time we have left. The leaves are slowly falling as time passed. Soon it will be winter, soon it will be too late.

Before I started tis project I knew I had to figure out how to darw a tree and how to blend colors. Now, that I look at my painting I see that I have reached my goal of blending colors and drawing a half decent tree. I compared my work to the wor I found on the internet and I asked my classmates and teachers. They say it's great so I assumed that I met my goals. While meeting my goals I learned how to make my pictures look more realistic. I am proud that my tree came out better than I hoped it would be. I was proud that I could add more even after I claimed I was finished.I don't think I would change anything about my project. I think it is perfect the way it is.

On the top picture I tried to draw a tree. It is a terrible excuse for a tree but on my project it will be much better. On the bottom picture I tried to blend some fall colors together. That was a sad mistake to so my project will be much better.

Cinder The Twisted Cinderella Tale In The Future

Posted by Nigeria Parker in ART ADV - Hertz - b2 on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at 12:50 pm

I decided to do fan art. I’ve never done it before and the book that I read didn’t have a picture that would show the most important character. The author gave very little mental pictures of the character besides that she is a robot and alien who thought she was human. I drew this picture based on the picture that I saw in my mind. In my art work as a whole I like to tell stories. Every story has its unique ending and beginning. Depending on the story, if it's happy I tend to use bright colors and if the story is sad or stressful I would use dark colors.

In my art work there is a story. There is a girl named Cinder. She is part alien and part robot, who thinks she’s human. The girl is dirty because of her job, as a mechanic. The job that her step mother made her get so that Cinder could provide for her step sisters and her step mother. To paint my picture I used paint and sharpie markers. I put a lot of time and effort. At first I didn’t think that I could do it but when I got to the end of the painting it doesn’t look to bad.

The Story Of Nathan Padgett

Abstract

This is the story of Nathan Padgett and his memories of the years before and  the 1960’s. Nathan tells about his life in the city of Philadelphia,PA. You will hear about the fun he had and the dangerous things he did in his years. He will tell about the riots and the destruction that when on during the 1950’s and 60’s. You will be told that it wasn’t just the blacks and the whites.

Research

African Americans  would start riots in the 1960’s because they weren't being paid enough and whites just would not hire them.  In the 1960’s is when the schools were integrated. In philadelphia at the time the wasn't segregation so blacks had to go to school with whites. Whether they liked it or not whites had to share a school with blacks. They had to share bathrooms and jobs. There were more fights than riots in philadelphia.

NP:  What is your name?

Nathan Padgett: Nathan Robert Pagett.

NP: What year was you born?

Nathan Padgett: 1951.

NP: What school did you go to?

Nathan Padgett: Vare elementary, Skisky Elementary, Furnis, Southern.

NP: What was it like to go to school at that time?

Nathan Padgett: When I was going to Skisky… Going to elementry school time  was alright but when I got to junior high and  high school. It wa’ent alright. It was a lot of riots… riots going on den. Between the blacks and the whites, the Irish and the Pollar, the Italians.

NP: Did you have to walk to school?

Nathan Padgett: Everyday.

NP: Did you see a lot of things going on?

Nathan Padgett: Oh Yea! Seen a lot of people get… get stabbed, get shot.

NP: How old are you?

Nathan Padgett:  63.

NP: How old were you when you got your first job?

Nathan Padgett: 14.

NP: Where did you work?

Nathan Padgett: Einstein hospital Northern Division. Broad and olney.

NP: What did you do?

Nathan Padgett: I worked in the umm… In the morg.

NP: In the morg??

Nathan Padgett: I went up and brought dead bodies from the room down stairs.

NP: Ewe.

Was there a lot of kids your age working there?

Nathan Padgett: Yes.

NP: Was it hard to get that job?

Nathan Padgett: No when we got… When I got my working papers.  Uhh around the houston community center on 8th and snyder. They used to get teenagers gobs and thats the job they got me.

NP: What are your personal experiences wit… with segregation segregation?

Nathan Padgett: Well. We. With segregation?  We still. Umm a lot of fights. Like. Like I said it was a lot of riots. They didn't want, want. Segregation with us. See we had. We went to white schools. Whites and blacks went to  black and white schools. See we just didn’t like each other thats all. Thats why we had a lot of fights. We. You know, we all. There was no segregation here in philadelphia. All you know. Whatever school you went to there was whites and… whites and blacks mixed in to one school together. But like I said we just didn’t like each other. thats why we had a lot of fights, a lot of riots.

The whites didn’t like us coming in their neighborhood going to school and we didn’t like going down there. So we had to go down to, uhh 2nd and mifflin to go to junior high school. We had to go to 9th and mifflin to go to  elementary school. Well Skisky was on 8th, 9th and mithlin. Southern was on broad and snyder. We had to fight the white boys going to school and coming back from school. Junior high and high school. No matter which way you went. You had to fight them going to and coming back from school. That's why, you know, as far as segregation they didn’t want us in their neighborhoods and in their schools, but we went anyway.

NP: Umm.  As bathrooms and like water fountains. Was there separate bathrooms?

Nathan Padgett: No. No they wasn’t. If a white boy, a white guy had to go to the bathroom and it was blacks in there he went in there. Blacks, if it was whites in there we went in there and went to the bathroom. That's all, we didn’t, you know.

NP:  Did you serve in the Vietnam war?

Nathan Padgett:  No i was, no I didn’t go to Vietnam. They sent me to oknowood trained. Training people to go to Vietnam.

NP:  How long did you train for?

Nathan Padgett:  6 months

NP: was it hard work?

Nathan Padgett:  I wouldn’t say it was hard work but it was dangerous because I was working with explosives. TNT, C4, digni might, stuff like that explosives. And if you messed up in the wrong way you could blow yourself the heck up.

NP: Was it a lot of people training with you?

Nathan Padgett:  Yes, it was about 12 of us that was training for it. Well not really twelve it was like a hole butane each. One was, had a different job we had to do. I was in the 1371 combat engineer so, I was teaching how to blow up bridges, blow them up and tear them down. I blew them up and we build them. That's what we did.

NP: Did anybody die while you were training?

Nathan Padgett:  No, but a dude blew off a couple of his fingers. He was messin around with a blasted cap and he pressed the thing down too hard. It blew 3 of his fingers off.

NP: Did they like, put him back together?

Nathan Padgett:  No. No he got a medical charge and went home.

NP: Oh.

Nathan Padgett: You put a blasting cap into TNT or C4, got a little pair of pliers there called crumpets. That you crimp. Down to make sure it say in there. And what he did, he pushed down to hard on the crumpets, and it blew his thumb and 2 fingers off. He got a medical discharge and went home.

NP: Do you regret anything about your life?

Nathan Padgett:  No. I don’t regret a thing.

NP: Umm so if you could go back and change anything, you wouldn’t change nothing?

Nathan Padgett:  I would change the drinking. All the drinking that I done. I would change that. But being in the service. I wouldn’t change that. I had a ball in the service.

NP: What would you say is the most important thing. Your most important memory.

Nathan Padgett:  Most important memory. The day my son was born. That was important. That was the most important. The best thing i ever done in my life was to uhh, I stayed and helped my sister out.

The  “ sculpture” that I choose was my binder. I choose this artifact because I like school, paper, and work. That is what’s in my binder. It is also what my binder represents to me, my love for school. I use my binder for every class I go to, for every thing I want to learn or learned. I will be placing a heart on my binder and it will light. It was simple, and it does represent how I feel about school. I expect everyone to realize just that.
