After providing this lesson to the fifth grade class I found out that not only balancing tech with physical activity is important to your well being, but learning how to balance everyday tasks like homework/play, jobs/sleep, financial wants/needs, and time management are key roles in becoming an adult. And as a senior going into college these last four years have provided me the ability to create a capstone that not only left a impression on younger students but allowed me to reflect on all the lessons I have learned and use them into becoming a future successful college graduate.

For my capstone, I decided to do a breast cancer awareness presentation. I wanted to educate young girls about breast cancer since it’s the second leading to cause of death in women in the U.S. I made a slides show presentation that explains what is breast cancer, what are the risk factors for it, they early and later signs of breast cancer, and how can we prevent it. My process and the leagcy I’ll leave behind is leaving the young girls educated and have valuable information on breast cancer. Throughout the process, I did a lot of research and gathered information for breast cancer. I asked my capstone mentor whenever it was needed and also asked relatives on their experience with breast cancer. The only struggle I faced is that making sure my capstone tied to SLA core values https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1aNeuQ6XzKbrGE_krZLktaNg1gc6yJF8Q7ERcvWHnCws/edit?usp=sharing

Samuel Igiozee - Video Documentary

Posted by Samuel Igiozee in Senior Capstone · Connaghan · ILP/TFI/CAP on Monday, May 20, 2019 at 2:22 am

Before I decided on doing work on a video documentary, I had to think of an idea that the school has seen before. The idea of a documentary came to mind but there were ideas of documentaries before which meant that I have to change it differently. But, I knew I couldn’t work alone so I asked my friend, Asaad, if he can help me out with the process of making a documentary. He agreed and we got to work. We needed to figure out what would be the purpose of the documentary and how is it going to be structured. I was thinking that maybe not many people know about the SLA @ Beeber. We decided that we were going to use the video for school recognition. We got to work on collecting interviews from student and teacher alike and it seemed as though we would be finished before the capstone project due date. But, everything came awry when we lost the some of the footage that was stored in the cameras. I brought in my USB Drive in order to make sure that we don’t lose anymore remaining footage and future footage. Asaad and I also faced some problems of interview scheduling. Many teachers were very busy when it came to interviewing them. But, me and Asaad managed to overcome these challenges and got the video documentary done. The video was displayed at the capstone showcase along with other projects.

Jasmin Velez, Adopt don't Shop

What me and Marian did for our Capstone was research and bring awareness to why Adopting animals from shelters is the better option than buying from pet stores. I've loved animals ever since i could remember, and joined many volunteer programs such as a therapeutic horse academy, to have more experience with animals. I wanted to show something not everyone knows about and could benefit our community even if it is just in a small way. The process of getting the research done was a bit hard, but going up to the SPCA was the hardest experience. Seeing all these amazing amazing being in the shelter just waiting for a home. Our project came out successful in getting to every point we needed.

What I decided to do for my senior capstone is a basketball tournament. I wanted to do something that I enjoyed and try to bring people together by playing basketball so they can learn to play and develop different skills. Some skills like teamwork, sportsmanship and collaboration.

For my senior capstone, my partner and I decided that we wanted to do a health fair for the 9th graders,(since we both want to become nurses) something that will inform the kids of SLA how important their health is and how we can do better in being healthier as a community. In putting on the health fair it took a lot of planning and timing to do in order to make sure that everything went smoothly. We researched and came up with some topics that would be fitting and they were STDs/HIV, eating healthy, exercising drugs/alcohol, and mental health. Things that are relevant in today’s society that teens need to be made aware of. We even got in contact with some nurses and medical physicians who could have possibly been able to come and present one of those topics. The process was rough because we had to keep changing dates of when the health fair would be because time was winding down, had to figure out how we could rearrange the schedule that would allow the 9th graders to come down and wouldn’t disrupt their classes, and then we weren’t able to present a big health fair like we originally wanted to. We ended up presenting a smaller health fair to some seniors. This whole experience taught me a lot about planning things according to dates and times. I’ve learned how to manage time more wisely and also how to make the best out of a situation even if it doesn’t go as planned. Even if we didn't do it like we originally planned, everything still worked out and we got it done and it still was successful.

For my capstone I wanted to involve myself with our first high school musical play ever in SLA@B history. But instead of being in front of the camera I wanted to behind scenes. I wanted to know the process of how to conduct a beautiful play from the behind productions. I learned that it takes a lot of patients and a whole team not just one person. It was a hard process but the ending was just a success and all worth it. Now this will be forever talked about after I graduate and hopefully this was the start if many plays in SLA.

Savannah Harris Mental Health

Posted by Savannah Harris in Senior Capstone · Connaghan · ILP/TFI/CAP on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at 12:04 am

For my capstone, my partner Tianna and I created awareness to Mental Health. We decided to do research on our own and collaborate with what we have. The process first started off with taking notes, summaries, and reading articles on Mental Health. We had several meetings where we would discuss the meaning of Mental Health. Mental Health is a condition where it can affect your ability to stay on task and your emotional well- being. With the research, we then took surveys which gave us a lot of feedback on how students manage Mental Health and the different types of Mental Health such as anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia, or stress. We also did interviews with our peers and staff member at SLA on Mental Health. This expanded our thinking on how we can make solutions to Mental Health. The process of our capstone wasn’t bad at all, we had several meetings and collaborated on everything! We met a lot of new people during our interviews and heard their voices on how they deal with mental health. The product of our capstone included a presentation slide show, a video, and a survey. The slide show explains more in detail how our mental health process with, our videos gives you interviews from our SLA peers and staff members. And our surveys show you the data from our school on answering questions such as what is mental health, dealing with it, symptoms, etc. What I learned from my capstone is that it’s very important to take care of yourself. It’s important that you get enough sleep, throughout your life you must make time for yourself, always stay organized and use your time wisely. From our feedback, I learned a lot of students deal with mental health issues especially during school specifically from stress. I was able to agree on that! So you could never know what a student would be going through, I think it’s very important that with a school community staff members, friends, and nurses should check on students daily t make them feel more comfortable! https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1-k0DSh-ES77xKVMYIFlUKctQ_23nEf_Z-DltPsVoaQs/edit?usp=sharing
