For my senior year capstone I decided to collaborate with my peer, Natalie, to work on Homelessness. Throughout the year in the time we had we worked on finding out more information on what homelessness is and what is it that causes people to end in certain circumstances. We learned so much together and it turned us into young leaders.

Our first step as a team was to gather as much possible information that we could find. Our purpose was not just to give money to these people in need and call it a day. We wanted to educate ourselves into knowing what it is that brings the people of Philadelphia to these circumstances. In doing so we would be able to learn what is going on in our own city and what is it that needs to be done.

For us it got really complicated when it came to talking to shelters and big agencies that helped homelessness. Then came how to be able to fund for what was needed in these shelters to help care for these women. We had a very hard time communicating with these shelters since they are underfunded on staff but we were able to work with Women of Change which is a shelter that holds about 25 to 30 women and mostly help women get back on their feet. With more communication we were able to figure out what was it that these women really needed and not what we thought they needed.

For our senior project, Karrine and I decided to use our collaboration skills to connect with one of our very own sophomores in the building, in order to understand a day in the life of someone with a disability. The process was very challenging, as figuring out what we wanted the goal and outcome of this project to be was not easy at all. From start to finish, it took extreme focus, and time in and outside of school to accomplish our goal. Our project focused strictly on understanding that someone with a disability does not change the fact that they are still human as well. Understanding that disability does not limit you, was the overall message we gained from working with Sam. From the research, to the interviewing, to going to a wheelchair basketball tournament, and just all around communicating with Sam on a daily basis, allowed myself and Karrine to learn that focusing on the disability honestly does not matter, but we should focus more on who they are on the inside rather than the outside.

For my capstone, I wanted to give the juniors some helpful tips and help them get a head start on the college process. I know first hand the college process can be very agonizing and stressful, but I believe with the help of my capstone it would make the process much easier. I met with a group of juniors once a day after school for four weeks to help them prepare for the college selection process that they will be facing next year. One of the actives that we did together was I help set up their Common App. I asked around my senior class and ask what was one of the hardest things about the college process and almost all their responses were setting up the Common App. The Common App was not only difficult to fill out but it had so much information that you needed. With this information in mind, I had my group start setting up their college board to get a head start before senior year. With getting college board information out of the way now, they will be ahead of their class peers entering their senior year. This will cause less stress on them while they can focus on college essays and benchmarks. The reason why I wanted this to be my capstone is that I wanted to share the information that I wish I knew going into my senior year. Senior year is a very stressful yet exciting year, I wanted the juniors to spend their last year at SLA making memories not stressing over what comes next.
