Toxic In The City Reflection

Posted by Charles Riggs in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 9:56 am

I think our environment is not environmentally just because we still have these old buildings that have lead and the old park buildings too and how it is harmful to kids. This itself destroying our community and little to no one trying to prevent the cause of lead poisoning.

Natural Disasters & Earth Systems: Flood in Sierra Leone

Posted by Hadja Diallo in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 9:51 pm

The Earth is made up of four spheres. They are Atmosphere, Biosphere, Geosphere, and Hydrosphere. The Atmosphere is (air) Biosphere is responsible for maintaining life. Geosphere (Land and Rockets). Hydrosphere (water). We connected all these four elements to our natural disaster.

While doing the search on the water flood in Sierra Leone, I learned that sierra Leone is one of the wettest cities in west Africa. They once received 20 inches of rainfall in August. In our search we learned that heavy rains over saturated the ground which caused it to be waterlogged and lose friction.

Reflection 9/18/17:
For this project I found it pretty easy. The only part that was really hard or difficult was creating a info graphic. I put a lot of information into the doc.

Reflection 9/19/17: The information we got back was great for the next time we work on a project. We have to do better with time management and staying focus during class.  We have to learn to do our sources better and citing them besides those couple of mistakes people said our project was alright.

Reflection ~ Throughout this project, the research my team and I found taught me a lot about hurricanes and the different spheres of the earth. Before the research, I thought hurricanes only affected/were affected by atmosphere and hydrosphere. My understanding on how hurricanes are formed and what they do increased and I now know more than the 2 systems affects/are affected by hurricanes. One main system that is affected and caught my eye is the biosphere, which is life. Hurricanes can be very deadly towards organisms as a whole; not just humans. They also affects the geosphere which destroys organism's homes.

Yellow Stone Wildfire in 1988

The earth systems affect one another because the spheres are all part of the same interconnected system, changes in any sphere ultimately affect the other spheres as well. The actions of nature and people changes in all of the other parts of the Earth system.

A disaster management specialist plans and directs programs and procedures for responding to natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes. Emergency management directors plan responses to emergencies and disasters to minimize risk to people and property. Their plans must comply with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as established best practices.

Some efforts that could be done in order to create a substantial future are by minimizing resources (some renewable, some not), population, pollution, global warming, species extinction, etc. are some examples.

Natural Disasters: Hurricane Irma

Posted by Radiatou Diarra in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 11:00 pm

Reflection: The earth system is made of four and a half spheres. Atmosphere: The air that surrounds the earth, Geosphere: The Geosphere is the rocks and minerals of the earth. From hot magma to the sandy beaches, this is all part of the Geosphere, Hydrosphere, and cryosphere: Hydrosphere is made up of all the water on earth, cryosphere is the frozen water of the earth system, and Biosphere: it is composed of all of the living organisms on earth. Each of these sphere kind of play a role in each other especially when talking about hurricanes. Besides hurricanes destroying people's homes, community, taking individuals lives away they have an impact on the environment as well. Hurricanes also cause strong wind that can completely defoliate forest and cause changes in wooded ecosystems. Animals can be killed by hurricanes or impacted indirectly through changes in habitat and food availability caused by the high winds, storm and the crazy rainfall.

Natural Disasters

Reflection: The Earth System is made up of multiple systems including the atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere, & cryosphere. These systems all have an effect on natural disasters, they have a huge influence on them. It was beneficial learning about the earth's systems and the effects they have on natural disasters. I learned how as well as why natural disasters occur and I think everyone should do research on the earth systems and natural disasters, especially those who live in areas mostly effected by them. It's great to be educated about the topic.
