1. How do the earth systems affect each other?

  • All Earth’s systems affect each other by being all closely connected, basically being all tied to keep the earth a living planet.

2. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters?

  • If they understand more about natural disasters, they are prepared for what could happen, by knowing signs, or when it does happen, they can help out the best they can.

3. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future?

  • Help each others understand important things, like natural disasters, so they can benefit as well.

W.A.L.L and Tsunamis

1. Earth systems affect each other because they are constantly transferring energy one way or another. They are interconnected.
2. If someone understands why natural disasters happen they can better prepare for it because they know what causes it and know how to look for the signs.
3.We can build better buildings that can withstand natural disasters and also set up more places for people to go while they occur.

Natural Disasters and Earth Systems

My group and I choose tsunami as our natural disaster. We choose to talk about tsunamis because we felt like we knew more information on others. Each natural disaster can effect each of the earth spheres in different ways, but in my opinion tsunami have to be one of the worst. Tsunamis are huge waves that crash on to land and destroy everything. My group and I displayed the information we learned on a weebly to be able to have a presentation. weebly link: https://envirosci2019.weebly.com

All the spheres in the system interconnect and overlap. None of the spheres work individually. The hydrosphere and atmosphere connect, through evaporation from the hydrosphere providing the medium for the formation of rain and clouds in the atmosphere. The geosphere and hydrosphere through water providing the moisture and medium for the erosion and weathering of rocks which are on the geosphere. In return, the geosphere provides a platform for bodies of water and ice melts to flow back into the oceans. The atmosphere provides the geosphere with thermal energy which is needed for the rocks erosion and breakdown. In return, the geosphere reflects the sun back into the atmosphere. Biosphere receives sunlight energy, gases, and heat from the atmosphere. Also receives H2O from the hydrosphere and living medium from the geosphere.

Having an understanding of environmental science can aid in handling natural disasters because you have a better understanding of how each of the spheres work individually to form the planet we live in today enabling us to sustain life. Also, we can detect when a natural disaster might break out and we can also tell when it will have an outbreak in the future.

Some efforts we can make to create a sustainable future is keeping the planet greener because as time goes by we just seem to trash it even more. Also, pollution can be dealt with as well to better the future of our spheres.

My group took the time to do research about sinkholes and how they affect the cryosphere, the biosphere, the geosphere, and the atmosphere. Through this, we learned that sinkholes can be man-made and or natural. and that they are caused by erosion mostly to the earth.

Tsunamis

People today alter our environment by smoking and using lots of fossil fuels destroying trees which are the animals habitats, and w continue altering them by carelessly using energy. Sustainability is to see how far we can go or continue at the same rate or level. When looking at the ecological footprint for us I believe continuing on the way we are now is a huge problem because the increase of fossil fuels used, animals going extinct because we endanger them, destroying the trees when they are most resourceful, which are very bad events we should not go on with. Each system is described as the earth, the water, the life(bio), and the air (atmosphere). Various forms of energy are kinetic which is energy that moves, potential energy is when something is in place or poised until it is changed, chemical energy which is used when we eat, gravitational energy which is also known as the earths gravity. Ecological systems depend on many of these energies because of the basic but enormous roles they play like creating more land or recycling what we can't and etc., Scientist use the many tools and research they gathered in order to provide for the complex systems, and finally natural systems change over time and space when others affect most of the surround things like the environment and such

Natural Disasters and Earth System Research

Posted by Chelby Elam in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 11:16 pm

We created a power point for our visual as we researched our natural disaster. The natural disaster we researched were sinkholes. A sinkhole is a natural disaster where a giant hole forms in the ground. It’s usually caused by collapse in the surface layer, erosion, or underground water. Sinkholes can be natural or man made. Sinkholes affect the hydrosphere, geosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. From this we learned that all of the Earth systems are connected. If something bad happens to one it probably affects another one in a bad way. Our understanding of environmental science can aid in handling natural disasters because we know how the earth and its systems work and why these things happen. From that we can figure out what to do when these things happen. To create a sustainable future, we should cut down on trash that's created, we can continue to find different modes of transportation and keep our underground updated by fixing things like water mains.

Floods

Posted by Nathan McGill in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 10:21 pm

1. How do the earth systems affect each other?

Floods can affect the hydrosphere. The floods can destroy rivers and lakes, they also pollute the water making it unhealthy for marine life.

2. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters?

The understanding of environmental science can aid in handling floods because once you know how floods occur, based on what you know you can find ways to prevent floods from happening and prepare for them.

3. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future?

When it comes to floods there are a couple things you can do to create a sustainable future. Some examples would be to introduce better warning systems, have more flood barriers, and to create more wetlands for the water to be condensed.

Natural Disasters and Earth System - Tornado

Posted by Sarah Sam in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 9:36 pm

For this project, my group and I decided to focus on tornadoes as our natural disaster. We created a physical tornado with tin foil and cotton balls. Within the winds of the tornadoes, a tree and animals are trapped inside. This represents how tornadoes affects the biosphere, which are animals, humans, the environment, and fundamentally all living organisms. From this project, I learned that earth's systems are interconnected with each other, and if one system fails or creates a natural disaster, it can lead to a spiraling domino affect on dependent systems. For example, a tornado is created from cold and warm winds colliding together in the atmosphere. These strong winds can pick up rocks affecting the geosphere and can injure the biosphere, such as humans and animals. With an understanding like this for natural disaster. You can easily take precautions and put yourself in less of harm's way. As well as preparing for future natural disasters and how to better assist those that are in need of crucial help. One way to help minimize natural disasters is keeping the earth ecofriendly. Which means less consumption of fossil fuels and production of pollution. This in mind, we can help create a better future that can withstand the devastation that natural disasters brings.
