Social media Survival Guide

Sanai S.

When I am online I appear to be myself. Also a little boring mostly because I barely post anything on my social media accounts. But when I am on social media I am respectful to others and people that I don’t know.Online I consider myself to be a nice and kind person .And I think people could percieve me as a person who loves myself, friends and my family from what I already have posted on my accounts. Before I post anything online I think about if I want some of my family members to see it or people who really expect a lot from me,especially my mom.I really do not see myslf being different from who I am online and off. There are so many pros and cons to social media that’s why I have to watch what I post and what I say because people are always watching. There are so many good and bad things about being apart of social media. Some pros for sharing online are that social media helps people to interact in good ways as well as seeing other people and how they interact int their everyday lives. There are also some cons to being apart of this. And online so many people are able to get personal information about you and most people like to say negaitve things.Having the “Lack of Control” will affect the way people view you online.People don’t remember that even though you may delete things that you don’t think you should have posted it is still permanent and you don’t know where it may end up.My thoughts on social media background checks are that if you know that you don’t post anything that could potentially affect your career, there should be background checks so that the employer will know what kind of person you are and how you will represent that job.So I do think background checks are important for some people. But at the same time I believe that your work ethic has to match up with personality.Free speech is the right to express any opinion without restriction and everyone believes that they have the right of free speech. But it doesn’t protect all speech like fighting words or anything to that degree.Things like Internet trolls who are people who enjoy hurting others are not protected and their goals are to make people feel less than themselves. There needs to be a way to stop them and I believe if we learn how to ignore the things they say and not encourage it then there could be a major change and it will stop.So here are some tips that will help you be a good person in the social media community.

      3 tips for posting online:

  1. Think before you post

  2. Don’t be a bully

  3. Be respectful to others

Social Media Survival Guide

My online appearance is pretty boring. Mostly because i am inactive on all my social media accounts.I think people perceive me as a just another inactive account on social media that should get deleted since i rarely post and like pictures. Before i post any picture, i consider how good the picture looks or how funny the post is  and i use that to try to determine how many likes that post will get. I also consider what other people might think or say about the post.

There are both good and bad things about being apart of the “social media community”. One of the pros is that you are able to interact with a wider range of people. Also, being apart of social media is fun. You have to admit, sharing pictures and videos and seeing pieces of other people’s live keeps us entertained. Although there are pros to social media, there are also negative. When you are on social media you are sharing parts of life. When posting a picture, after you hit that “post” button you lose all control of where that post may go, which ultimately can have a negative impact on you. ‘Lack of Control’, ‘Permanence’, and ‘Immediacy’ are an example of negative impacts that being apart of the “Social Media Community”. Online, ‘Lack of Control’ means that when you post something you lose all control of where that post may end up and who that post might end up with. ‘Permanence’ means something being permanently online. ‘Immediacy’ refers to how fast something gets spread or post online. All of these things impact our online lives in some way.One way we can be negatively impacted by these things is when it comes to finding a job

Employers can check the applicant's social media accounts and take what they find into consideration. I have mixed feelings about an employer doing social media background checks. One one hand, i think it is okay because i think the employer has a right to know what type of person they are considering hiring. By looking on social media, you are able to see a different side of the person that they would not show during the interview. But on the other hand, it isn’t the employer’s business what that person does or how they act outside of the workplace. As long as the person is coming to work and doing what they are supposed to do, there shouldn’t be a problem.

A term often used and abused online is ‘freedom of speech’,but little people actually know what it means. The definition of ‘freedom of speech’ reads, “the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint.” But if that was the case, then things like, Fighting Words and Defamation would not be unconstitutional. Fighting Words mean any words that would most likely make the who are they directed towards commit an act of violence. Defamation means using lies to damage the good reputation of someone. In my opinion, if there was really a such thing as freedom of speech then these thing would not be unconstitutional because they would have the right to say anything they want without there being any consequences.

When you online, be  on the lookout for ‘Internet Trolls’.An Internet Troll is someone who post comments with the sole purpose to upset and disrupt the conversation. The goal of a troll is to get a response or reaction out of a person. They will lie, exaggerate, and offend just to do so. To deal with internet trolls is simple: just ignore them. Since their goal is to just get a reaction out of you, don’t give them one. This will eventually put a stop to Internet Trolls.

I don’t think that you  can post anonymously on social media. Anything that you post online can be traced back to you by the information that you used to sign up for the account. When using social media keep these tips in mind: Think about how what you are posting makes you look, do you like it?,Think about how your post might be perceived, and finally, Don’t pay attention to internet trolls.

Social Media Survival Guide

On online I’m nice to other people that I don’t even know, and I appear online by being nice on other people page and showing love on their page by liking their pictures and commenting nice stuff, for example like instagram. I think people perceive me as cool and a nice person. Before posting I think carefully about if the picture is appropriate and do I really want to post it. The pros and cons of sharing online is that what you post online can really have a bad effect on you. Lack of Control, Permanence and Immediacy have an impact on our online lives because you can start being a different person online than your real character. Your company should do a social media background checks because the potential employers will represent you and your company. Free speech is basically having the right of saying anything without the restraint of the government. Violation of copyright rules and commercial speech is protected by the first amendment. Crimes that is involved in a speech is not protected by the first amendment and also threats is not protected by the first amendment. An internet stroll upset people by posting stuff that are violent and other stuff that will make someone feel bad. The goals of internet trolls is to make people comment on their post and like their post. We can stop “trolling” by not commenting on their post. The pros and cons of posting anonymously online is people don’t know who you really are and you can still get bully. My top 3 tips to anyone who uses social media is always be careful of what you post online, always be in the right mood and always make a decision before posting.

Honestly I think online I would appear as a well educated, family oriented person.  think people would think I’m a nice person who care for others. I make sure that I seem to be acceptable of everyone. The cons are other people having your name and something pops up you don’t like. The pros is people able to see you grow. Lack of control is being careless and people can see others without them wanting to be shown. I don’t think I would mind a background check but I know some people don’t feel comfortable with one. I think free speech is freedom of expression which consists of , press, assembly and to petition the government for a redress of grievances, and the implied rights of association and belief. I think things protected are things that put others at risk of danger or things harmful to minors  . I think the things not protected is things people naturally see or is interacted in like social media. An internet troll is people who try to get others down. They are behind screens and they torment people. To stop trolling people can stop offending others. There are cons of anonymously posting online like when you post something people actually like and agree with it you can’t get knowledge for you good post. The pros is that you can base your opinion and no one will know exactly who you are and people you don’t want to know your social media page they want. A few things I can tell people about social media are be confident, be true to yourself, don’t try to please others. Social media is used to have fun don’t be on social media stressing. Also, don’t use social media to hurt  others.

Sianni Wood: Social Media Survival Guide

When I am online I am myself. I post what I want and I do not impersonate someone else. People would think of me as a person who loves to be around family and friends. On all of my social media sites I do not have any pictures of me by myself. Before I post online I think about my mom because she follows me. So I have to ask myself is this appropriate. The Pros of sharing online is that you are able to find out things faster. The Cons of sharing online is that it is not private. When we post something sometimes we don’t look over it and ask ourselves who will see this. We also don’t realize that when we post something that it is there forever. We don’t know that once we hit post it is immediately available to everyone around the world. This can affect our reputation. If we post something inappropriate it can cause us to get fired from our job or never get a job. I think that potential employers should not give out background checks. They should know how to separate their private life from their professional life. Free speech is the act of saying what you want. Some stuff like invasion of privacy, discrimination/racism, ruining someone’s reputation with false information is not protected by the law. But, you can state your opinion in a proper manner. An internet troll is someone who bullies people online and get joy from doing it. The goals of internet trolls is to get attention. We can stop trolling by just ignoring them. The pros of posting anonymously is that people don’t know who you are and they can’t hold anything against you. The cons of posting anonymously is that you can still get targeted and get bullied.

Tips:

  • Be respectful of yourselves and others when posting online.

  • Always ask yourself , “Who will see this” before posting

  • Do not bully anyone. If you don’t have anything to say then don’t say it at all.

Malayah Johsnon Social Media Survival Guide

Posted by Malayah Johnson in TECH 1 - Hertz - a2 on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at 9:19 am

Online I appear as different people but none of them are really me.When I search my first and last name none of the girls are me.But when I type in my @ name on twitter every thing came up.Most of my picture from photo gallery came up and other pictures of my friends.I think people will perceive me as pretty and nice. One example on how people perceive you online vs. in person is the “Selfie Girls”.Before I post anything online I think how people would react to it.Different people have different reactions to things and perspectives. People judge people based off of there social media accounts. One pros of posting online is that you can share an experience with other. One con about posting anything online is that people can take your picture and turn it into something its not and people can just run with it.One example of how people can take things and run with it is when someone screen shotted a picture of a little and turned into a memons.Lack of Control, Permanence and Immediacy has an impact on our lives because people dont have control over what they do with what you put online. But not just online people also take what you give them and turn it into something its not.People also can get information about you without you evening know.It is easy to hack into computers and other devices. When you make any post online you should think about how people react to it.You also should think about the different perspectives that different people have. You can feel one way about something but others can  feel  disrepected.Today companies are doing a little research on you.Companies are looking at you social media accounts to figure out should they hire you based off of your appearance online. They think would this person be a good look for our company or will they embarrass our company.I think this is good idea because you can get an idea of who is working for your company. The Free Speach is saying that you can say what you want to say but there is a limit.Free Speach is protected under the law in the First Adendmen.”The First Amendment does not protect individuals from facing civil penalties if they defame another person through written or verbal communication.”An Internet Troll is a person that likes to start problems over the internet for the fun of it.They start arguments by talkind about you to make you feel bad about yourself. We can stop trolling by treating others how we want to be treated. We also could stop trolling by keeping a postive vibe and community. The pros of posting anonymously is that people wouldnt know who you are.Another pro of posting anonymously is that you are protecting your self from people thinking of you in a bad way.One con of posting is that people dont know who you really are.

Tips for posting online.

1.You should always think how other people would think about you’ve posted.

2.You should think how will it effect you in the long run.

3.Finally,you should think would your parents think about what you’ve posted.

Online I appear as a boring person because i barely post anything on instagram. Before i post I think about If my dad should see this or not. And if this will impact me on anything. The pros and cons of sharing online are that your post can have a bad effect on you and your reputation and good thing is that you can express yourself on there. Lack of control can impact online lives because you can start being a different person online than you are in real life. I think companies should do a media background check because the potential employer will be representing you and your company.  Freedom of speech is expressing the way that you feel but something that is protected is your opinion. If your statement hurts someone or a company and if it is not true it is not protected by law. An internet troll is someone who intentionally hurts someone through the internet. The goals of internet trolls are to make someone have a reaction or to hurt people's feelings. We can stop internet trolling is  to have people hurt the troll back or to make a law saying that internet trolling cannot be allowed. The pros of posting online anonymously is that your identity is safe to the public but it is not safe to the authorities.
