capstone presentation
For my capstone project, I ultimately decided to do an online makeup portfolio. I decided to my capstone on makeup because it is something that I am, and have been very passionate about for a while. By doing this online makeup portfolio I wanted to practice my craft, and to have a more professional way to broadcast my work. After completing this project I have happily reached the goals that I set for myself, which was to better myself as an artist.

**The slideshow provided only has 5 of the images I used on this project. Please click the link on the first slide to view my entire project, which is an online makeup portfolio**

Capstone Bibliography

Staff, Investopedia. “Portfolio.” Investopedia. N.p., 25 Nov. 2003. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

I selected this source for two main reasons. This was my first source, and I believe it poses to be the base of my research. First reason being is because this source talks about what exactly is a portfolio. Some people don’t know what portfolio is, and some people think it can be only one uniformed thing. However, this link talks on the different types of portfolios, and exactly what a portfolio is. Before starting something you should know what it is, so this was only rhetorical. Secondly, this link gives some insight as to the effect that a portfolio has. A lot of people, including myself at one point, thought a portfolio was something just used in school or something. However, it’s way more helpful and could be a bigger impact in the work field.

“The 7 Elements of A Great Portfolio Website.” Skillcrush. N.p., 24 Oct. 2016. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

I found this source useful because it included format, and some things that I didn’t know that I should know. What I mean by format id that this source gave out seven steps, in order to help a successful portfolio. This is good, and is gonna be helpful to me to use as a timeline guide when creating my piece. Two things in this source that I didn’t know, that after reading I believe will help me is to integrate social media, and to make a clear mission statement. The first thing someone wants to know when reviewing your stuff is what and why. Therefore, I’ll include those two things.

Awards, The Webby. “Top 5 Free Portfolio Sites.” Top 5 Free Portfolio Sites. Vitamin T, 11 May 1970. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

Unlike most of my other sources, this source didn’t really help me per say with actually creating my portfolio. Instead, it helps by giving me options. Options as to what websites I could use, or what kind of websites I could use for my portfolio. It also helps with me seeing how I want to format my website. This website gave me five different website options to chose from, if I wanted to. After looking at those listed websites, I probably won’t use any of them, but it still helps because I know although free websites are limited, Is till do in fact have some choice when picking.

“How To Build A Makeup Artist Portfolio.” Makeup Artist Essentials. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

Moving forward, past the general portfolio portion and the website portion, this source is a more direct source about makeup. That is makeup portfolio, what is exactly what I’m doing. This source was helpful because it talks about exactly what i’m doing such as how to build a makeup portfolio, what’s included, and why is it important. All of those categories are pieces that I will reflect on, in my writing section of the portfolio. This will also help me because this source gives me two different options as to how I want to display my portfolio. The more potions, the better.

“Makeup portfolio.” My Portfolio. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

This source is extremely useful, because unlike most of my other sources, this is an actual example. This isn’t a made up example, but this is an actual online portfolio that is real that I found online. This is really useful because it gives me a prime example of how I could use and format my actual product. The good thing about this website, which is also unique is that it’s a hair and makeup portfolio. This shows me how you can incorporate more than one draft into your work. This is good for future reference when I start getting into hair and want to broadcast that work into my sight as well.

“Building a Makeup Artistry Portfolio 101: Finding Models.” QC Makeup Academy. N.p., 12 Dec. 2016. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

One limitation that I found of this source is that it was not explained in depth a I would have like it to be. I also would like for the source to include more subcategories. However, this source was useful because although it told me some things that I had already did, it allowed me to know that I was doing the right thing. The main thing that stuck out to me in this source was that it said when you’re first starting off with your work, that you should give out free trials and free make overs. I liked this because that is something that I already did when I first started, so I know that those steps were good ones in building my career.

“Testimonials.” MAKEUP BY MEGAN Makeup Artist Sydney Bridal Makeup Sydney Wedding Makeup Sydney South Coast Sutherland Shire Kangaroo Valley Southern Highlands Megan Vaughan Makeup Artist Testimonials Comments. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

This source is useful to me because it is unique. I say that because this source is full of testimonials after they got their makeup done. I found this useful because it tells from actual people, what it is that they did like and what it is that they don’t like. This is helpful to me and my business because I will know some things like what to do and what not to do. Is also useful because in my writing portion I planned to talk about what it is that makeup does, not only for me but for the clients. It’s a great feeling to make people feel amazing in their skin, so why not capture the moment.

“Free Website Builder - Your first steps towards online success.” 123-reg.co.uk. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

This source is usel for when I am actually makeup my website and the domain. Reason being is because it teaches readers how to build a website and domain. It also helps me because if I need more pages for more subcategory, it gives me that option. However the limitation of this source is that when you need more than a certain number of online pages, you will have to upgrade to a better version. The bad thing is that it costs. Not only does it costs, you won’t know if you like it or not until it’s paid for. So, there’s a risk that if I don’t like this option I could be wasting my money on it.

“Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners.” How to Make a Website. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

This website is useful because it gives me another alternative option for making my online portfolio. This good thing about this is that this source has many different templates. The different templates are the ways in which I can broadcast the work on my browser. I want to find the most attractive option for people who like makeup. This way my clientele can grow and I have impressed many people. This source is helpful to just that because as I said, it gives different samples for different things.

“Be a Show Off: Why Creating a Portfolio is Important.” Empire Beauty School. N.p., 06 Nov. 2013. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

This is the last spruce that I chose, and I picked this one for three reasons. One, this is a cosmetology school that teaches their students how to e successful after school. Two, they are saying when people show off their work in a good way that it attracts people more because they feel comfortable with you. This will help me because now I know there isn’t a such thing as too much showing off in a portfolio.

Quarter 4 yearly reflection

  • An overview of each of your projects from this year. Each overview must include:

    • a synopsis of the project (why you chose the project, what you created and the process you followed to create the project) AND an image of the project.

    • Color wheel

        • For the color wheel,  actually did not pick this project. My teacher assigned this and this is why I did this project.  The project was a color wheel was the project and I turned it into a spider’s web.

    • Afro centered pictured

        • For this project I created a self inspirational painting This means that I reflected on my life now and how I wanted it to be. The process that I went through to make ths was first by creating a background. After that I created the tree and the girl..

IMG_5832.JPG

    • Baby crochet shoe

        • For this project I created a baby crochet shoe. I chose to do this project because one of my friends just had a baby and I wanted to make a pr fp shoes for her baby. To do this I broke the project into different pieces by dong the base of the shoes and then doing the top of it.

    • Crochet phone case

        • For this project, I Created a phone case out of yarn (crocheting). My reasoning behind doing this is because I wanted a case for my phone that I didn't feel like paying for. To do this project  firstly created my 3D flower that I wanted to put on the case. I then created the actual case itself and a handle for it.

          • File_001.jpeg

  • A reflection on your growth as an artist this year

    • As an artist this year, I think that I can say that I´ve truly grown. It may have not been a tremendous amount of growth, but any growth in learning is always a good thing. With crochet I have expanded my exercises with crocheting and brought back my ability to be able to do some complex stitches such as the seashell stitch. This has all helped me grown as a creator using yarn because I am continuously practicing and making new things with her yarn. As far as painting, I have also grown with this because it allows me to be more of a visual learner AND creator!

  • A reflection on these questions:

    • “What have you learned about making Art?”

      • Through making art, I have learned that even if you're not great at one thing, you're great at some other type of art. To me art has taught me as to how amazing art really is.  Say this because when I used to hear art  would automatically think drawing or painting, but art is way more. Art can be music, painting, poetry, drawing, or whatever YOU want your art to be. At the end of art I have also found out that there is room for improvement and you shouldn't be scared to improve your art.

    • “What have you learned about yourself through the projects you have created?”

      • Through the projects that  have created, I have learned that  shouldn't doubt myself. Often times I would shut down when it came to art but these projects have allowed me to see for myself that I am actually more creative than  think.

  • Which project you are most proud of and why

    • This should include an image of the project

      • I am most proud of my painting project because drawing and painting s the hardest thing for me to. I was very nervous when  started this and the fact that it came out beautifully and looked as if  knew what I was doing, shocked myself.

  • Your biggest weakness or area in need of growth has been this year?

    • My biggest weakness would be my ability to draw or paint.  Am not a person who draws or who paints and so for me to a whole project on it was the hardest part for me. However, this did not shut me down, it only pushed me to practice to get better and better.

  • What kind of Art you want to make next.

    • The kind of art that I would love to make next is mostly music or to practice my drawing. Music s a passion for me, but paintings all speak 1000 words to my life in silence. With these 2 art pieces, I am able to be myself.

  • What kind of Art inspires you the most and why (MUST include a copyright free/Creative Commons licensed image and a citation for that image)

    • There isn't one specific picture or exact piece, so I can't add a picture but a lot of mixed media art inspires me because  feel that there s a lot in one mixed media art that any person can interpret different and connect to themselves.

Final Project Reflection

-  The purpose of each project that I completed this quarter was to simply grow as an artist. Coming into high school I would never consider myself as an artist at all. However, over the years I have come to grow in my artistic manners and expand myself as an artist. The process that I followed to complete this quarter's project was simply taking my time to really reflect and answer my questions and to reflect. My final thought on this project was that it was fairly easy, and worth it because we all need to self reflect at times in our life. My only weakness in this project would be finding pictures of each project.

Quarter 4 Benchmark- Flower Pencil

Posted by Khabreah Rodgers in ART ADV - Hertz - b2 on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at 11:53 am

1) Describe your project.

For this quarter, I decided to do something simple and pretty. My [project is just a flower pencil. Meaning that I took a pencil and made the top into a flower by using duck tape.

2) What did you learn while completing this project?

While doing this project, I learned a few things. One being that making a flower out of duct tape isn't as simple as I thought. I thought you would just have to fold every piece of duct tape and the flower would come out right. However, that wasn't the case. You have to fold every piece the same in order for the leafs to look like they came from the same plant. Another thing I learned was that making this would take longer than I thought. I waited until late to start this because I thought it would be quick, but in order for the flower to look neat it takes time pin evenly laying out the leafs.

3) What was the hardest part about completing this project?

The hardest part about completing this project would be two things. One being that I had to buy the tape then ran out, then had to buy more, then lost it, to buying it again. The other hardest thing was making the flower neat, and evenly portioned throughout the rows.

4) What was the most fun/exciting part?

The most fun thing about it was seeing the flower actually come alive, where people could tell it was a flower.

5) If you were to do this project over again, what would you do differently?

If I were to do this project differently, I would be sure to start earlier, having lots of tape, and portion my rows.

Spanish Children's book

This is a child's book in Spanish. It highlights the body parts, conditions, and clothing of an everyday life, especially when you're sick. I enjoyed this book because I am a writer, who wants to write books, but it was harder because it was in a different language.

  1. Describe your project
My project is melted crayons on a canvas with flowers towards the end. It basically describes my life. Right now it’s all a blur, but at the end I hope it will be peaceful.

  2. What knowledge did you already have about the project before you started?
Before I started this project, the only knowledge I had was that I knew crayons melted easily.

  3. What new skill did you want to learn coming into the project?
I wanted to learn how to turn something so messy, and childish into something with a great meaning behind it.

  4. Did you accomplish this goal?
I did accomplish this goal, because of my answer to question one.

  5. How do you know you accomplished the goal? If you didn’t accomplish the goal, why do you think that is?

    1. I think I accomplished the goal, because the whole point of the project was to be a reflection piece, and in the end I can see how it does actually reflects on my life, both positive and negative.

  6. What other skill(s) did you learn along the way?
I learned that when melting crayons, be careful because they are really running.

  7. What are you most proud of in this project?
I most proud of the meaning behind the project, that still correlates with the vision of the canvas.

  8. What would you do differently if you had to do the project over again?

    1. I would see which colors mix together, because originally I had a specific color scheme in my head, but when I started melting the crayons, the mixes came out different.

This was a first time and enjoyable experience. During this class, it was only one blowdryer and someone was already using it. Therefore, I melted the crayons with a lighter. When I was melting it, the wax starting melting very quickly, and it hardened very quickly. While I was melting my crayons, I saw the girl who was melting hers with a blowdryer. I will use this advantage to my best because I for sure know that this is fast, but if I spill it somewhere else, I need to clean it up ASAP The blow dryer method took very long. However, this was still a wonderful experience overall.

Art Elective Project Reflection

Please answer the questions below. Do not delete the prompts!

  1. Describe your project

    1. My project is liek I said a reflective piece. My piece is sort of like an illusion. I say that because you can see the main piece in two ways. It can be seen as a tree with colorful; leaves or an women face with a colorful afro. I did it like this because they go together because its like in the future I want to be and want my husband to see me as a natural african queen. On the sides are like fog clouds surrounded with birds and smoke. I put that because its like I don't want my life plan is but I hope its surrounded with peaceful and get rid of all the negativity.

  2. What knowledge did you already have about the project before you started?

    1. Besides my research on finger painting, the only knowledge I had was that I knew was that I wanted this to be a reflective piece representing what I am and what I want to be.

  3. What new skill did you want to learn coming into the project?

    1. I wanted to learn how to come out of my comfort zone with the images I do. What I mean is that I wanted to more than the basic drawings that I do and mature my pieces a little more.

  4. Did you accomplish this goal?

    1. I believe that I did accomplish this goal because I feel like my piece was very creative and mature because of the meaning behind it.

  5. How do you know you accomplished the goal? If you didn’t accomplish the goal, why do you think that is?

    1. I believe I accomplished the piece because like I stated above, the meaning behind the image, and the multiple pieces that on the canvas, and they all add up together.

  6. What other skill(s) did you learn along the way?

    1. While doing this, I learned that more thoughts/ideas come to mind when you're in the actual process of completing the piece. Like when I was doing this, I already had dow and knew what I wanted but as I continued, more thoughts and ideas co=came together to incorporate into the canvas.

  7. What are you most proud of in this project?

    1. In this project, i think I'm most proud of actually completing this and it being what I wanted plus it looked better than I imagined it would.

  8. What would you do differently if you had to do the project over again?

    1. If I had to do this project over, I think I would practice more finger painting methods because you can see some of the places that my fingers went across.

This piece is a dream catcher. This is a preview of what I want to do. This piece looks really nice and and dreamy. During the experience of this, I came across a few obstacles. One was that I used the wrong brush. One brush was too big and so I went into my lines. This help me for next time because now I know what brushes are too big and what to use. This helped me know what and what not to use during the process. It also helps me know what piece I should color in first to make sure its very neat.

Is it just a piece of yarn?

Posted by Khabreah Rodgers in ART ADV - Hertz - b2 on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at 7:19 pm

At first I never really look at ,myself as an artist. To be an artist, I thought you had to know how to simply draw, or paint. Stating that I had no drawing or painting skills whatsoever. So in my head I was no sort of an artist. However, I just need to research and open my eyes. Maturing and giving myself more perspectives on what art is, and the different types of art was the best thing for me. Now, I see things as kind of anything can be art. Reason being is because no matter what the piece is, every different person look at the piece will have a different interpretation of the theme the piece presents.

This project that I did, was not just an assignment. I don't just do it to get a grade. Now, I can say that this project however did not go into a personal meaning or depth. However, this project represented a few things of myself. This project represented what I like to do and what I grew up on. A lot of people portray me and this hard shell to crack person and they think of crocheting of relaxing and soothing. Now seeing me and crochet mixing is where the meaning comes in. This shows that although I may look like a hard shell to crack, doesn't mean I do those type of things. This project also shows my creativity and how I'm always ready to do something unique and new. This was my first time ever thinking of this or doing this. Everything wasn't perfect but I believe I did a really awesome job with this being my first time doing this exact piece.

At first I was really confused and I still am a little bit. I think what I can do for my next project to make it “better” is to look at other peoples and get ideas. Now, they will definitely just be ideas because I also want my pieces to be original. I think to make it better, I can also add more “personal meaning” into it. This will give me more to incorporate into the piece and more to look at. I know I'm not a perfect artist but practice surely makes perfect!

Abstract

In this interview I, Kha’Breah Rodgers, interviewed my grandmother, Joycelyn Parker. During this interview, we talk through her her early life, discrimination, rebelling, race, and a little about the government's flaws. We explored through my grandmothers young life which lead to a shocker that she revealed. Her life has faced the bare minimum amount of racism and discrimination. Which was a shocker because she was just the first african american family to live on her block.

During the interview, we came pass a brief moment with talking about the government. My grandmother talked about how she thinks the government allows racism. She explained how certain races high up in the government only want their race to succeed. At that moment and now, I still agree. Those are just our opinions though, everyone has a different view on things. We also talked on the what-ifs faces discrimination and racism. With that topic, it led us to relling. My grandmother said knowing the string minded person she is, she would have rebelled. Because my grandmother didn't really face a lot of racism or discrimination, a lot of this interview was based on predictions and personal perspectives.

Research

Rebellion is “an act of violent or open resistance to an established government or ruler” or “the action or process of resisting authority, control, or convention”. There are many reasons I found explaining why people rebel. People often rebel when they are jealous. They see something they like and they can’t have it so they act in negative ways to try and change or make that something different. While researching, I also found that people rebel when they see something in their perspective that is wrong or they don't like it. They feel as though something can/should be better and they think rebelling is the answer to change. In the interview my grandmother explained her reasoning for rebeling. She said that because she don't believe racism and discrimination is right. She thought that life would be better without it. My grandmother said that after trying peacefully with no progression in desegregating, she would rebel. She said at that point she would rebel because after trying peacefully, she dont believe theres any other way to try to stop, than rebelling. I also used context clue from what my grandmother said and determined that she has some anger towards this world and the government. From that prediction, I can guess that, that is another reason why she would rebel.

KR: Ok my name is Kha’Breah Rodgers and I am conducting this interview for my 9th grade, freshman benchmark project. Would you like to identify yourself for the records?

JP: My name is Jocelyn Parker.

KR: Okay and when were you born?

JP: July the 3rd, 1949

KR:Okay so, im gonna ask you a few questions on a cou… few different topics. Are you okay with that?

JP: Yes.

KR: Okay so, my first question is, in your opinion, why do you think the civil rights movement took as long as it did to function?

JP: Because African American (uhh) people were hesitant and they were afraid of prosecution by the Caucasian race.

KR: Okay.. in your opinion, do you think racism.. died?

JP: No, racism is very much alive. Its hidden undercover (uhh) but its there and comes out at various times.

KR: Do you still f.. face racism?

JP: No, not myself personally.

KR: Okay.. When will racism die?

JP: Racism will never die. Its gonna be (uhh) going on forever I believe. And if it does die, I don't believe we’ll be around to see it.

KR: Okay I… I… I...I agree with that.. Certainly. I certainly agree with that. I think myself, racism will never die. It is very much still alive.

JP: Yes it is.

KR: And.. racism isn't only with the caucasians. Its also with African Americans and different races.

JP: All nationalities (uhh) face racism at some point or time of their life.

KR: Agreed, agreed. So how do you think the concept of race has changed from the time we were.. you were younger, till’ now?

JP: Well (uhh) minorities have come a long way, they have overcome a lot of hurdles that they faced previously in the years. (Uhh) A lot of (uhh) rights (uhh) have been established, programs, (uhh) regulations that are out there now that have been created that wasn't there before that has help all of the racism.. racist. (Uhh) Proceed and go ahead, go forth with what they wanna do.

KR: Okay, now this might be a quick question…

JP: Okay.

KR: Do you think the government, to some extinct allows racism?

JP: Yes I do.

KR: May you explain that for us?

JP: I can't pinpoint it exactly because of whose.. sitting in those positions high up in government, because lets face it, its a lot of folks up there, big wheels up there, that don't wanna see any race of people

KR: Succeed.

JP: Succeed. Just their particular race.. And.. thats my opinion.

KR: Okay and what do you… what role do you think race plays in life?

JP: All roles.

KR: All roles?

JP: All ro... no particular roles. All. It affects all roles, no matter what role you carry.

KR: Soo.. how much discrimination have you faced when you were younger until now?

JP: Truthfully.. not very much (uhh) I was raised up on a street in West Philadelphia. Cedar Avenue. 5900 Cedar Avenue.

KR: Mhm.

JP: I was the second.. we were the second afro american family to live on that block. The first family was the family of  MCcoy Tyner. The fabulous and very entertainable jazz player who is still much still alive and travels overseas.

KR: Yes, yes.

JP: Very well, were very well friends and like I said we was the second family, the Tyner family were the first. And we had wonderful (uhh) Italian and and Jewish neighbors on the block,. We went to school together with their children (uhh) we looked out for eachother.

KR: Yes, yes.

JP: So (uhh) my childhood growing up did not face (uhh) a great deal of racism.

KR: Okay.. so, if so... and this is a honest opinion from you, if ,if you did, how do you think you would have been able to handle that? In a positive way or in a negative way because I recently read this… story in my history class about doctor Marten Luther King Jr who says  lets fight this battle with peace. We will use the word of god. So how do you think you would've fought the war?

JP: Honestly.. I thi… I believe I would've been a little rebellious.

KR: Okay, and we all rebel sometimes.

JP: Yes we..yes we do. (uhh) I believe in peace. I dont like to fight and I dont like to argue. And if we can try to talk it out and mo.. keep it moving, we can and of course prayer played a..a great part in every decision of our life.

KR: Mhm.

JP: But (uhh) I do believe I would have been (uhh) little rebellious.

KR: Okay and with racism and discrimination still alive how do you predict our future?

JP: Thats a hard question to answer. Until people can really look at themselves and realize that we are all one race of people. We were all born the same way and we'll all die the same way, and until people can come together and realize that we all here to serve the same purpose.

KR: Okay.

JP: I dont think its gonna ever, ever gonna change.

KR: Okay, and thank you for your time.

JP: You’re quite welcome, and you have a blessed day.

KR: You too.

I used Line in my drawing basically all over this piece. I used it to draw my feathers, my net in the catcher, and my chain at the top. I also used Value/tone on my net. When my net first started the lines were dark and as the got to the middle, the lines became lighter.

Coming into this project I had a mindset to be very artistic, creative, and do something never done. I also wanted my art piece to be  very pretty and neat.   I chose to make this piece because I didn't want to do anything that was done over and over again. This tells that I am a very unique person and I want to stand out. I wanted to do something that I could look back on and be proud of and have people like "dannng that's decent"! This also tells that I take great pride in my work. I want to be proud of anything I create and have others proud with me! I don’t just do things just to get past. And I want this to be above and beyond. Beings though I am not an artist when it comes to drawing and painting, I wanted to show my creative way creating artistic pieces. I chose to make this because I wanted to be able to create something GREAT!
