For my capstone, I wanted it to be about something that I am passionate about! Or else, I know I wouldn't be able to put my all into it. Since 6th grade, I had a love for poetry. As I got into high school, my love for poetry grew like a wildfire. While working with the Philadelphia Poetry Youth movement, they inspired me to want to widen my audience of listeners. So I came up with the idea of teaching kids (middle school) and teenagers (high school) about "The Power Poetry" and what it can be used for! Throughout my slides, you will see both of the breakdowns for high school and middle school.  I got an extraordinary chance to be able to work with kids from SLA middle school with the supervision of their teacher, Ms.Hamilton who welcomed me like I was her own. Then I taught two tenth grade classes in my school.

My capstone mentor challenged me to cater to both audiences without losing the "it factor" of using poetry to make a difference. So that's what I did! I wasn't able to put the recordings of each grades performances in but I do have them and they performed amazingly! I have to be honest, I was scared that the kids wouldn’t want to participate in the open mic at the end. But overall most people did because they were intrigued by the prompts that I gave. I made sure that we made the room a safe space before sharing. So everyone had a understanding that nobody including the teacher and myself wouldn’t judge the student about what they wrote. After all I was always taught that writing has a mind of its own and will take its course no matter who’s listening. Thank you for viewing my Capstone. Hopefully, you can find a love for poetry and use it to tap into your creative side and be a voice for the voiceless. Maya Angelou once said, “ I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Reflection: For this project, we had to pick a condition that can affect the function and the physiology of the brain. We decided to focus on drug addiction. This is a big epidemic in the US with opioids and heroin.  I learned that drugs flow to your reward system so that your body wants to intake more. Drugs harm the Limbic System, the brain stem, and the Cerebral Cortex.  During our research, we also found ways to stop drug addiction.

Classroom Re-Engineering

For our project, we decided to reconstruct and organize the back of the room. We felt like this would help not only our classroom itself but also be helpful to the students who may not be familiar with certain things in the back of the room. Below you will see some before pictures that show what we want to reconstruct/and or organize. Also We have a chart that explains our roles and what we are going to be doing. We weren't able to get pictures of the After because we weren't finish all the way. We should be by Thursday of this week.

Travel Project

This project was about traveling to a Spanish country and staying for a couple of days, to a week. For me personally this project was every insightful. For example, this project taught me how to actually plan and pay for a trip. I had fun doing this project with my group members because we all had never been there, so this was cool to plan as if we were going.

Poetry Project

This project was poetry based. We had to find a poet with a life/ and or story that we could relate too. Then we had to write a biography about the poet that we choose, and a autobiography about our self. Also, we had to write one of the poets poem's in Spanish. Then we had to take one of the theme's out of that poem and write our own. I especially had a good time with this project because I myself am a poet! This project was fun not only because I got to write a poem, but I also got to look into someone else's life who I could relate too.

This project was about celebrating a life, of the Day of the dead. I decided to focus this project on my favorite cousin. He was a influential role model to me. I miss him dearly. I have fun creating the art aspects of this project.

Oral History Project: Elizabeth Watkins(S. Beattie)

Abstract:

During this interview me and my godmother, Elizabeth Watkins discussed various topics. The interview was mainly about how she viewed racism and how it has effect today’s time and back in the days time. We also talked about the recent violence that has been going on and how it is affecting the society that we all have to live in. She also talked about her life growing up in New Jersey and how racism did not have a direct effect on her. In closing that is what the interview is mostly about.


Research:

During my research I found a lot of answers. For instance, my godmother stated that she didn’t have any run ins when it came to racism in New Jersey. My research infers otherwise, now She may have not have had an encounter with racism, but New Jersey was one of the most racist states. I also stated that my godmother talked about how she viewed racism. Some students from a university stated, “African Americans face a high percentage of discrimination. As you stated earlier in class they are running a close second after Hispanics.  Also, African Americans are citizens of the US whereas some/most Hispanics are not, so there is more evidence there of discrimination.”. Last but not least, my godmother talked about how today’s violence is affecting our society. I found a blog that talked about violence is corrupting our society because it rubs off on our next generation. In the end, this is what I researched and the answers that I concluded.

SB:My name is Salina Beattie, this is for my history project, today's date is May 12 2015 and the time is 7:51(pm). Okay so my first question is,  what is your concept of race?

E.W: Of what?

SB: Of race

EW:Race?

SB: Uhm

EW:(pause)

SB: what is your conception of, well not concept but conception?

EW:(pause) Well (pause) I, As a Christian, were all one race, were all God's children were all one race.

SB: Okay,uhm, how is your conception changed and if not then why?

EW:It hasn't changed, because that's my belief.

SB: Okay, How do you see the role of race in society

EW:It's really unequal

SB: And why do you say that?

EW:Just listening to the news and that's all. Like I said, it's unequal. Well because... a lot of opportunities don't come to everyone equally.

SB:uhm, okay next question, do you think African Americans play victim more so now or back then?

EW: Victim of racism?

SB: Like victim in the sense of anything. Like if a situation happened and like do you think, Do you think we have like ugh. Do you think like African Americans like play victim more  now then like back in the day?

EW: I think more in the past. I think we have come along way. We have certainly improved in relationships and equality. We are probably not there yet but I think we have definitely  improved from what we went through years and years ago. Just take for instance, Selma. that's a perfect example of what happen and how we have come through it.

SB: Okay, next question, Do you remember the Civil rights movement?

EW: Yes

SB: What do you remember about it?

EW:(pause) I remember Dr. King. I remember him sorta leading, leading us through the trials and tribulations that blacks were going through at the time. And I remember him being assassinated.

SB: Uhm okay, Uhm What were your educational experiences back then? Like did you, did segregation= and race interfere  with your educational development?

EW: Not really,uhm well to me it was I guess less minor because I had, instead of being a librarian, and then of course being in Philadelphia, there was no black librarians. So I quickly decided to go another direction.

SB: Why is that, Like why didn't you , u know do what you wanted to be?

EW: Well I wasn't the pioneer type. I wasn't tryna push through.

SB: Okay, uhm, Do you think the world would be different (good/bad) if discrimination did not happen?

EW: I think it certainly would have been better if discrimination hadn't happen. I think it would have been better for all.

SB: Right, not just for blacks

EW: No not just for blacks, everybody

SB: Okay, With all the killings of particularly black men today by white police officers, do you think it's worse today or back then?

EW: Uhm I believe it was worse back then, and this is just police or whites in general?

SB: I mean you can expand it to whites in general.

EW:Well a lot of things were just kept quiet back then. Where as it's out in the open now.

SB: If you had a choice, would you want to be born in today’s society or back then society?

EW: Heck no! I didn't wanna use anything stronger than that.

SB: Okay, right Just elaborate a little bit on that. What do you think was better back then than it is now that gives you the mindset, like I don't wanna be born in this society.

EW: Well, We had on thing. We were more family orientated. Even though most people, well I'll say even though we were poor. Family, loving family and as children we didn't realize how the parents had to struggle to do and to get what they  managed to get.  But it was just , I think it was, is the closeness of family that kept us from knowing or feeling different or unwanted or what ever.

SB: Okay, last question, Did you or any if your family play a role in the Civil rights movement in any kind of way?

EW: No, just to pray and that's the main thing, pray and let God take over.

SB: Okay well thank you!

EW: You're welcome!

How would you define yourself?

-”As a child of God. Who follows God’s teachings. Who is trying to live a healthy wholesome life. Who is friendly. Not judgemental because you should judge others, so they won’t judge you.”


What was your childhood like?

  • “It was a good life. She knew she was loved. She had both parents, who were loving and kind. Also she didn’t know she was poor because her parents provided everything that she needed. And there was no such thing as fights, and if it was then it would just be fists fight. Kids back then respected their neighbors and their parents.”


.Did u ever experience prejudice in your life?


“Well I guess since I was so young, I didn’t notice segregation and prejudice. But there was a time when my mother went to look out the window, and she saw the kkk going to their meeting. They were dressed up all in white, with their hoods on their heads. They didn’t bother anyone though. But that was the first I realized that prejudice existed. Another incident, she went to visit her aunt, she wanted to go to another town in the south. Her not living in a pred. community. She went on the bus and sat in the front. So her aunt was scared so she told her that she had to sit in the back.”

What are the most important lessons youʼve learned in life?

-“I learned that the anger that you have from someone that made you angry, you shouldn’t make another person angry. You should turn it into something positive.”


What was the happiest moment of your life?


-“My happiest moment was when I broke up with someone. I wanted This person and my  friend went out which made me mad. But the friend that went out with my partner, I want to ask out. I feel like I can’t be stopped because love is in the air.”


Who has been the biggest influence on your life?


“I would wish to bring my aunt back. I wants my aunt back because she changed his life. She made me realize that my happiness comes from others. She was like my mother. She meant everything to me.”


Where do you see yourself in 10 years? 20 years?


-“I see myself being a car engineer. Coming home to a wife and a kid. I would have a model and a nice care. I would give 50% to charity and the other half to my wife and child.”


How would you like to be remembered?


-“I would like to be remembered by, me putting everybody over myself. I tried to make everyone happy.”

The Glow Up Microphone

The sculpture that we decided to do was a microphone. We both like music so we thought that a microphone would be a good representation for our love of music. We both agree that music is a big stress reliever for both of us. Music plays a big part in our lives also. In the end, this is why we decided to pick our art to be a microphone.

A picture is worth a thousand words

My picture states that you should never let the internet control you. I know your like "well how can the internet control me"? When I say that I mean, it can control you by influencing you to post things that you wouldn't want someone to post about you. For example in the book,the girl posted a mean status about a culture that was really rude.I know if a person of that culture posted something about her that was mean she wouldn't like it. So, don't let the internet control you.
