Aedan Will Q4 Benchmark - Teenage Pregnancy

Posted by Aedan Will in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 7:49 am

For our PSA we chose the topic of teenage pregnancy because it was something that was partial to our group, seeing as how one of our group member's mother was a teenage mother. In the video we talked about the changes that are made to a teen mother's life and how it can make things very difficult making you change your schedules, stopping you from hanging out with friends or going out, and it can even lead to some people shaming you. A couple things that I did well were helping to find information that we could use for the PSA and helping to walk my group through how to use the video software. If I could have done something differently then I would have tried to find more resources that teens could use to get help if they were ever facing that situation. I believe that the most meaningful part of all of this was learning how tough it actually is for teen mothers and learning that one of my friends parents was able to actually fight through it and become successful in life even after such a big limitation like this.

Reflection:
For this project we talked about teenage pregnancy. We talked about the effects that teenage pregnancy has on both the teenager and the child that is born. For our interview we interviewed Tyrone's mom who experienced teenage pregnancy herself. We tried to find out how teenage pregnancy affected public health while connecting it to personal experiences. For this project, I worked on creating the script, doing research, and finding pictures and other things to place in the video in the background of the interview. I would have made sure we addressed more of the public health issue rather than personal experiences if I had to do this project again. The most meaningful part of this PSA was learning personal experiences of people that actually went through this.

Understanding Overdosing on Pharmaceutical Drugs

Trey Hollinger
I chose pharmaceutical drug overdose or my project because I felt like drug overdose is actually very important but it is a problem that is overlooked by many.     I did not know the statistical data such as how many people overdose from these drugs each year so I wanted to know more about the issue on pharmaceutical drug overdose, who was out there trying to put an end to these overdoses, and why these overdose were happening at such a constant rate. I also wanted to know if this was a problem that more related to minors or if even adults were significantly affected by overdosing on these prescribed drugs.
I truly contributed to the group by basically doing the entire project. I worked very hard on the research part of the benchmark, I constructed a way to include important details that would make our Benchmark even more informative, and I put the video together in the end. We all did well on interviewing, specifically I took the time to interview the nurse thoroughly but a lot of the content she gave couldn't be included into the video. I believe I did well on finding credible sources and evidence, finding sources who provided information that was factual and less about bias, and by putting together a video that was informative but didn't go too far past the time limit. Though, in the future I would try to get this done a lot sooner we didn't wait until the last minute but didn't put enough effort into getting the job done a lot sooner than the day before the project was due.
The most meaningful part of the project was getting new intel and new perspective on the topic, before I used to think only drugs maintained illegally throughout the streets were the issues but now I know even over the counter drugs when used improperly can be quite harmful to the public's health.

After gaining this knowledge it makes me want to do something about it as if it slowly has awoken the activist inside of me, though I am no superman and cannot save everyone, this kind of topic makes me want to learn more about the importances of pharmaceutical opioid overdose, and spread the word for helping prevention of this issue.
Topic of Video:
The video created was on the overdose on pharmaceutical drugs and how it is affecting us. We explained the different ways drug overdosing is affected the community, the statistics on opioid overdose, and what solutions we have as for what can be done to help prevent drug overdose

Q4 Benchmark final submission Water Sanitation

Posted by Abdulomar Tucker in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 4:02 am

My video was about Water Sanitation. In our video, we basically informed our viewers what water sanitation was and how it was a big issue that was receiving little attention. We also gave a quick tip to our views on how we could as a collective sustain healthy water. In my group, I helped lay the structure for our video and put in lots of work for our checkpoints. I think we could have had better time management besides that everything was fine. The most meaningful part of this project is the knowledge gained from going through with it. I have learned about how important the issue is and it has made me want to brainstorm some solutions. Our PSA https://youtu.be/EGqGoJt8m1w

Write - Up

Our video was about Water Sanitation. In our video, we basically informed our viewers what water sanitation was and how it was a big issue that was receiving little attention. We also gave a quick tip to our views on how we could as a collective sustain healthy water. We chose this topic because it was something that wasn’t given much life so our PSA would give the topic a stage .In my group, I helped lay the structure for our video and put in lots of work for our checkpoints. I think we could have had better time management besides that everything was fine. The most meaningful part of this project is the knowledge gained from going through with it. I have learned about how important the issue is and it has made me want to brainstorm some solutions.

For our benchmark we decided to do a PSA on water sanitation. In our video we included a conversation amongst the group members talking about what water sanitation is, how it’s sanitized and why it’s important. In my opinion water sanitation is the most important topic because of how necessary water is to all species. For the project, I got us in contact with a PWD worker and came up with questions to interview him. I then interviewed him and got information on how philadelphia's sanitizes water. Me and my group worked well together and turned everything on time. We could have started recording for our PSA earlier, but we didn’t.  The most meaningful part to this PSA was learning how much work goes into something as simple as clean water.

My topic, food safety covers a common sickness called “ foodborne illness”. The symptoms caused by this sickness as well as where it may come from. Foodborne illness is found inside of the food. Whereas through the food can be contaminated with bacteria or parasites. From poor sanitation through the process of the food or the workplace. I contributed to the project of course because I did it on my own, so I played every role to my potential. I think I edited the video well, something I would do differently is try to work with others, for help on things like the recording. I believe the most meaningful part, was informing my peers on what they may be eating, and always stay cautious. So I enjoy being a help to others.

Q4 Benchmark Submission

For this project, we decided to talk about nutrition in aspects of infant health, how much sugar is really in our foods and how dieting can affect our bodies. We chose this because we felt like America struggles with realising the true facts of fatty foods and how they are made. The most meaningful part of the PSA was having to talk to someone who works on nutrition, specifically infant health. She was able to talk about her knowledge of nutrition in pregnant women and infants. My job was to complete an interview with someone and we wanted to be different and use the information that we got from our interviewee and pick important information related to our video. If we were to do this differently I think we should've started out with an outline of what the final submission should look like instead of jumping into many things.

Reflection I made a PSA about obesity with my friends Saraa and Shirin. We all helped each other do every part of the project from research to writing the script to editing. Overall, I chose to do a PSA about obesity because it is a public health issue. I think that my group and I did the entire project well. However, if I could redo, I would work on the project earlier. The most meaningful part of working on a PSA was working on it with other people. The unit of this project is public health. Public health is about preventing diseases rather than treating them. There are a lot of factors that go into public health like economy, society, and politics. Society makes the issue known to the government and then, the government and society work together using politics to get people with the right resources and mindset to make real change. These people then have to use the economy correctly to solves the issues of society. Public health is something that affects everybody and lack of care to it can damage the process of research.

    Obesity: Human Anatomy Benchmark

For our last project, my group and I decided to work on obesity. Obesity is a well-known issue in the United States. Nearly two-thirds of adult Americans are overweight or obese. Despite all the attention to prevent overweight and obesity, The prevalence of obesity in the US has more than doubled over the past four decades. I contributed to this project by doing my research and making sure I was adding enough facts for the people to understand. I looked into many organizations/rehab that help obese people. Lastly, I made sure to do my recording for the PSA audio. It was meaningful to come together and add all our information together.

    Reproductive Healthcare

Posted by Santana Outlaw in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 10:06 pm

Our video was based on the topic of reproductive healthcare, which involves things such as abortion, trans-rights, and more. I feel as though this is an important topic because we often see in the news that the government makes constant efforts to defund Planned Parenthood or regulate human bodies more than guns (shade). It's important to spread awareness about this topic to put an end to ridiculous laws. For this project, I interviewed Ms. Williams along with Adam. As a group, we interviewed a couple peers for the PSA as well. For this project, I wish we were able to schedule an interview with organizations such as Galaei, the Mazzoni Center, or the Attic Youth Center. These places often serve as safe spaces for queer citizens and free (or reduced) testing centers. It would've been great to have their input! The most important part about this is that it's a topic that's commonly avoided because of the intensity (it's not even that intense). People don't always know how to approach certain questions about reproductive health due to lack of exposure, so it's good to break it down in a simple-enough fashion.
In the interview, Ms. Williams made a good point about how low-income areas in cities typically have the highest pregnancy or STD rates because of the lack of access of education or health resources. Since these areas are (as I said) low-income, it's not easy to get an abortion or medical treatment to cure any infections or diseases. Lack of education in these areas also leads to people not understanding what to do in certain situations or know who to go to. Our PSA was created to emphasize these issues and assure that our viewers become aware of them.
