Q4 Benchmark final submission

Reflection
I made a PSA about obesity with my friends Saraa and Shirin. We all helped each other do every part of the project from research to writing the script to editing. Overall, I chose to do a PSA about obesity because it is a public health issue. I think that my group and I did the entire project well. However, if I could redo, I would work on the project earlier. The most meaningful part of working on a PSA was working on it with other people.

The unit of this project is public health. Public health is about preventing diseases rather than treating them. There are a lot of factors that go into public health like economy, society, and politics. Society makes the issue known to the government and then, the government and society work together using politics to get people with the right resources and mindset to make real change. These people then have to use the economy correctly to solves the issues of society. Public health is something that affects everybody and lack of care to it can damage the process of research.

Project Description

Link: Our presentation project!!

Overall, this project was very fun. I learned a lot about human anatomy and how Alzheimer's disease effects the physiology of the human mind. If I were to redo this project, I would procrastinate less.

Environmental Justice: Oil Spills

Posted by Michael Tran in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 10:21 am

This video was made by Will Sigler, Shiren Akhter, Michael Tran, & Tykeiah Martin. It is a PSA about oil spills and environmental justice.

I wanted to talk about oil spills because it is an environmental justice issue. Oil spills contaminate water and it can kill animals that live near it.

I didn’t have a specific role, I just helped in all aspects of the project as much as I can, like helping my group in recording, editing, and writing the script.

I think my best contribution to the project was the editing. I think I could have worked a little harder on the script.

I think that working with a group was the most meaningful part of creating the PSA because it is very efficient and teamwork is cool.

Click on the picture to zoom in.

There seems to be a correlation between lead poisoning and poverty. And lead poisoning prevention agencies lack the funding required to help children. This problem is similar to segregation. Though black and white communities can live together now. Most choose not to. The white flight, which started near the 1960s, is still happening now. Apparently, the neighborhood is too "dangerous"; however, these people are just racist. The tax money goes to another neighborhood. And the poor, who are left behind, have less money to spend on housing and schools.

Natural Disasters and Earth System Research

Natural Disasters and Earth System Research
*please click on picture
Earth system science is understanding the notion that Earth is a complex system represented by interlocking spheres of processes: atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere. The balance of these spheres of processes maintains life on Earth. The impact humankind has on the climate system is a part of these spheres of processes. The impact humankind has on the climate system is a part of these spheres of processes. Earth system science is not complete, is always changing, and does not including human interaction. Earth is the only planet that sustains life: water to feed life, carbon to make life and to trap heat, atmosphere and an electromagnetic field to block harmful radiation, the moon to balance Earth, and finally, the earth is in the sun's Goldilocks zone. The great circulation systems of Earth-water, carbon, and the nutrients-replenish what life needs and help regulate the climate system. In Earth system science, changes in Earth's ecosystems can cause extreme weather events. Changes in one sphere of processes can affect another. Our solar system is located in a benign region of the Milky Way galaxy, such that Earth is not bombarded with excessive high-energy radiation from stellar neighbors. The tilt of the Earth's axis controls the seasons and Earth's 24-hour rotational period ensures daily distribution of energy are a vital part of the diurnal biological clock and the daily rhythm of the tides that run in many living organisms. Earth's gravity is in the range where a significant atmosphere can remain on the surface without dissipating into the vacuum of space. Unlike other celestial bodies, Earth has all the necessary requirements for life. The air is very thin. The early air had carbon dioxide and eventually, photosynthesis evolved and made more oxygen. The hydrologic cycle is caused by the circulating atmosphere, which is caused by the earth's rotation, the sun heating the air, and earth's gravity pulling everything down. The troposphere is the densest and closest part of the air to the earth, containing over 99% of the water vapor. Above is the stratosphere which has all of the ozone, which is slowly dying due to human chemicals called CFCs. Methane, carbon dioxide and low clouds can also trap heat while high clouds reflect energy into space. Right now the air is getting worst in every way due to global warming. Water help enriches the soil and moves tectonic plates. Water somewhat controls the weather and there is only like one percent fresh water on earth. Ice has a lot of fresh water and it reflects a lot of sunlight; if it were to melt then all of the shores would be flooded. Water is needed to make food and it is a pathway for energy. The layers of earth hold a record of what has happened here. Rocks can be categorized into three main types based upon their origin. Igneous rock crystallizes at great depth in the Earth from molten magma. Sedimentary rock forms when fine-grained materials, often weathered bits of other rock, are deposited in layers by the action of wind or water. Metamorphic rock is produced by the transformation of igneous or sedimentary rock under conditions of heat or pressure, such as when the rock is buried deeply or compressed. The low-density rocks flow on the denser stuff and move around to create quakes, volcanoes, and etc. If stress on two plates is strong enough, then the rock will crack and earthquakes will happen. Most of the volcanoes are underwater and if it explodes, then the air will be filled with bad stuff and the climate will change. The rock cycle is uplift, weathering, erosion, deposition, compression, and alteration, and without the rock cycle, then the nutrients can be buried forever. There is life everywhere except only on earth. The biosphere is the living part of the system, responsible for maintaining o2 and co2, hydrologic cycle through plants and soil formation to make oil and coal. Earth has been making o2 for a long time so now there is a lot of it. Carbon is very important so it must be cycled in the system. The 18th century was the start of human impact on global warming. We have taken off the earth’s resources. Earth system science is important.
Asteroid impacts are a lot worse than I thought. It negatively affects almost all of the earth systems. In the worst case scenario, it can also cause other natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, and wildfires. A lot of the plans to stop an asteroid impact sound really futuristic, but at the same time possible. I decided to pick asteroid impacts as my natural disaster that I was going to cover because natural disasters from the exosphere are sometimes forgotten since they are so rare.
Based on the feedback I got, it seems my slideshow was a bit boring. It had too much information which made it very long. I should've made a video instead, which would have allowed me to cover more information in a shorter amount of time. I also would have been able to show more pictures on my visual. I decided not to do a video because my voice was too boring to listen to; however, that was a mistake.

Clean the tables to tape ‘em, the students that clean get extra cred.{not the tables the pockets within the tables, tape the pockets shut after the clean}

Team

  1. Amna Clean ‘em

  2. Michael Tape ‘em

The tables are very dirty and student needs better grades. Only tape and soap and water and a pair of hands are needed. The students that clean get extra cred. In addition, only one person needs. Every person after that gets the job done faster. Afterward tape the tables so they can’t not dirty ‘em again. We can’t remove and we don’t use so taping is the best. Glue is too sticky. This project can be done today. Once the tables are clean and taped then the success is real.

La Poesía Española

Michael Tran A Banda

seriedad.

Sería menos higiénico,

Correría más riesgos,

Haría más viajes,

Contemplaría más atardeceres,

Subiría más montañas, nadaría más ríos.

Iría a más lugares adonde nunca he ido,

Comería más helados y menos habas,

Tendría más problemas reales y menos

imaginarios.

prolíficamente cada minuto de su vida;

Si pudiera volver a vivir comenzaría a andar

Preocuparse no soluciona ningún problema.

No Cambiaría Nada

Si algo iba a suceder mañana,

¿Qué cambiaría si me preocupo?

Si algo ha sucedido ayer,

¿Qué cambiaría si mi lamento?

No cambiaría nada.

¿Cuánto tiempo me queda?

¿Cómo yo debo pasar mi tiempo?

¿Y yo no tengo tiempo suficiente?

Project Reflection

For this project, I was tasked to create: a biography about my favourite poet from a set list, an autobiography about myself, a reflection of one of my poet’s favourite poem, and a poem about my our about my poet’s morals. Creating a poem was pretty fun. I think I did a good job on this project; however, I wasn't great at time management and was unable to meet any of my deadlines… again.

Tips for Teenagers

By: Michael, Brandon, Nahja, Diamond, Frank

Based on the I-Search papers that we completed on teenage development, here are some tips for teenagers to help them be happier and to help them develop in positive ways.

  1. Try to be honest and magnanimous. Lying leads to more bad stuff. Being mean creates enemies.

  2. Don’t be afraid to stand out and be yourself. Always be self-confident because you can gain more respect from others.

  3. Do not be easily influenced. Come to your own conclusions and be your own person. Being different is motivational.

  4. Since the teenage years are important, getting good grades should be taken seriously.

  5. Don’t change who you are and don’t try to be another person.

Electric Art Project

Michael Tran

Artist Statement

Every since I was a little boy, I always like the idea of learning new things about life. This can be anything new or anything I have forgotten. I love knowing more about the things that surround me. I would not be the person I am today if it weren’t for education. This is why I decided to do a binder as a Electric Art. It is the most useful learning tool I can think of.

I truly believe that education is the most powerful tool that can change the world. Education is the key to overcoming big barriers. Once you know it then you can break. When I grow up I want to make a time machine. I want to be a billionaire and the president of the world. I can only do this through many years of learning. And I feel as though a binder is a good symbol of school.

Because of education so many things were invented.  Things like cars and houses. And as I mentioned before, I want to build a time machine. Though this will be hard work, it will be worth it. As the roots of school is terrible but it’s outcome is amazing. My only barrier is laziness. This is a big barrier because I know that I will be learning my entire life. I know that I will never be the master because education never ends. But if I wasn’t lazy, things would be too easy!

Overall I decided to do my electrical art project on a binder because I feel like it represents school. I meant in school, binder is very necessary. Everything else is somewhat optional except for a writing stick. Education is my life. I would be nothing without it. And the binder tells me that I am hardworking student when I am not lazy.

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

I choose this picture for many reasons. This is a picture of a boy using a computer. It is copyright free and is a amazing picture. The message I am trying to convey is that the internet is not given to everyone; therefore it is not a right but a responsibility. Not everyone gets to use the internet but the ones who do should be responsible when using the internet.

We Dem Boyz Group Video(Michael, Cyrus, Jordon, Jake)

Group Artist Statement:

Throughout this project our group learned many things, whether it was as a group or individually. We found out that when we work together as a group we can do anything and that when we are alone we learn to be ourselves.

For the first marking period that we have been a group, we bonded in many ways and managed to get projects done while having fun doing it. We learned many things that we can look back upon and have nothing but good memories. We learned a lot about each other through this project, for example our hobbies, culture, personalities, and many other things.

However, for the whole marking period we got all our projects done and got good grades on MOST of them while having fun. We each had a chance to try out each others hobbies, we had the chance to bond and become friends, and many more things.

From the makings of these videos, we discovered that we don't need to hide behind a mask because of our differences. We made these videos where we all told each other about our different hobbies, interests, culture, etc. We did not judge anyone based on any of the following qualities; instead we tried each other’s traits out. While doing this, we had a fun time doing the things that we knew nothing about. So what we learned while doing this project is that there is no need to hide behind a mask because if you come out and no one judges, you can have fun and learn things about someone that you never knew before.

Michael’s Artist Statement:

Why do we express ourselves? We express ourselves for many reasons. The first reason is that people express themselves is to get attention and to be notice by others. The second reason is to communicate. We have complex communication and languages for social reason and we express these things through art, music, writing, etc.

Technology has change over the past hundred years. People also change with technology to adapt with newer types of devices. Technology affects the way we connect with others by distracting ourselves from personal interactions. People now use technology because it is a easier and faster way to express ourselves. Unlike in person, through technology, you can know express your thoughts and emotions in a more efficient way to almost everyone you know at once, and maybe too people you have never meet.
I have expressed myself as a person of a person who likes school and spends most of his time there. I have also express myself as a person who loves dance music as showed in the audio of the music. In addition to that, I have express myself as a builder, as you may see in the video, I build a lot of cool things. I then farther in the video, express myself as a people who loves to watch anime. Last but not least, I express myself as a person who loves selfies, as shown in the video, it is about 65% of my video! Thought the video I show may look a bit easy to make for some people. I find it an amazing accomplishment and a wonderful experience, for the reason that it is the first video I ever made.

Jake’s Artist Statement:

The idea of who I really am, and how I choose to express myself is a pretty new one for

me.  Since we began this project in class, I have learned a lot of interesting things about people expressing themselves as human beings and how I would like to express myself,  I have realized that self-expression is complicated, but important.

I learned that a lot of people need to express themselves to the world because it helps them to be an individual.  If they did not express themselves as an individual, many people would feel lost or alone. Since we made a video of how we choose to express ourselves, I decided to express myself based on my family, friends, and my hobbies. These are the three key things in my life. These things describe who I am perfectly.

I think that people forming a first impression of my by looking at my video would think that I am a pretty simple person.  But in reality, after doing this project, I have realized that who I am is much more complicated than that.  I think that I am only just beginning to learn how to express myself.

Cyrus’s Artist Statement:

My video is inspired from my from my instagram. I use my instagram to express myself a lot. I took a few videos and picture from my instagram, mainly the ones that have a meaning or represent me. I don’t post just anything on my instagram. I only upload things that i’m into and I think is worth saving or worth everyone else seeing.

I express myself for people to get an understanding of me. I express myself in many different ways. I do this because I want people to know me as a very diverse person. For example, my instagram. You mainly see skateboarding because that’s what i’m interested in the most. You also see art, photography, music, fashion and many other things. This leads to the next question. How does technology affect the way we express ourselves and connect with others? As I previously said, I only upload things that I think is worth other people seeing. People could honestly express themselves as much as they want through technology. For example, look at anyone facebook. You can tell what type of person they are just by what they post. In this video I used a few things that describe me the most. It’s a mix of everything that mean something to me or play the biggest role in my life. I think I expressed my complexity by using many different types of topics. I don’t have a video full of picture of myself. I mixed it up with old pictures of myself, new pics of myself, skateboarding, art, family, and photography. I showed the things that I would personally use to describe myself.

This video is basically a quick summary of how I would describe myself and how I express myself. I am artistic, athletic, and I love my family. This is how I want other is see me. This is how I express myself.

Jordon’s Artist Statement:

In my video I expressed my hobbies a lot. I learned that finding who I am and what I like to do is very important. I feel like the saying “I know you better than you know yourself” is very important. That should not be the case, you should find things you love and look back into your memories and find you who you are. The thing is I don’t take good photos of myself, I don’t think I look right. So I take pictures of places I visit, things I do that are fun, and just things in my life period. Getting to know yourself and defining yourself should be a life goal. I never really thought about finding who I am or defining who I am before this project. I just thought of taking pictures was just to make memories, but that's just part of it. They remind you who you are and what makes you different from everyone else. Knowing who you are lets you reveal that you are not the same as one person in this world. Many people want to fit in but they don’t want to be exactly the same as everyone. I am one of those people. I sometimes pick a trend that is going on right now but a lot of the time I pick my own style.
