Motor Vehicle Injuries/ Accidents

Posted by Amani Sheard in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 2:35 pm

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in the first three decades of Americans’ lives. The number of motor vehicle deaths have skyrocketed in 2015, resulting in over 35,000 deaths that year alone. More than 85% of motor vehicle crashes happen because of the decision of the driver. These issues could range from drinking in driving, texting while driving, or falling asleep behind the wheel.  In attempts to stop the issue of motor vehicle accidents, organizations such as CDC have turned to science in hopes of a solution. Thanks to scientific research, we found that distractions to the brain are what commonly cause such accidents. Doing simple things like, not texting while driving, driving sober, and wearing a seat belt can reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents.
I helped my group by researching current events relation to motor vehicle accidents, as well as researching scientific articles which tell us why this topic is such a problem. Lastly connecting it to pubic health safety.
We all did a good job at creating an informative PSA. One that was filled with facts, yet easy to understand and interesting to watch. The most meaningful part was being able to not only find the science behind such a big topic, but being able to find ways to prevent it.

Reproductive Healthcare

Posted by Adam Bennett in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 2:25 pm

The main focus in our video is to spread awareness about reproductive health and giving a definition of what it is. In the video, we interviewed Ms. Williams to ask her about her role in public health care and what she thinks should be the next steps in educating students on reproductive healthcare. The role I played was interviewing Ms. Williams discussing with her the reproductive health care and providing audio clips for the script. I think what I did well was be there for my group in any way they needed me and playing my role well in the project. I guess one thing I would do differently is probably interview more professionals on the topic from both sides of reproductive health. The most meaningful part I would say was the interview because it helps having that professional to student dialogue.

Motor Vehicle Accidents and Injuries

Reflection:
My group decided to make a video that shows the importance of motor vehicle prevention. As a group I believe that we contribute equally as a whole, the one thing we could've differently was worked on time management. We started the project a little late but we made it work. The most meaningful part of creating the project was working with others that have the same experiences as me.

Motor Vehicle Injury and Accidents

Reflection:

My group's video showed the importance of motor vehicle accident prevention. We included statistics and interviews of people who have suffered injuries from car accidents. We chose this topic because we could all relate to the experience of a car crash. We thought it would be interesting to choose something that has increasingly gotten worse over the years in the United States. This allows us to research ways in the past that contributed to lowering the amount of motor vehicle accidents.
I contributed to my group by researching and recording some of the interviews. Most of the work was collective so I contributed in anyway that I could. I put the video together on IMovie and gave ideas to improve the visual aspect of our project. Overall, I think that my group could have done better with time management. We started late on the project which pushed us back a little but we were able to catch up. We did well with participating and taking criticism. We were respectful to each other and found a way fror everybody's ideas to be included. The most meaningful part of the project was hearing the stories of out friends and classmates. We heard experiences that we never knew about and I think it was a useful and connecting experience.

Q3 Benchmark : Obesity

Posted by Darian Scudder in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Monday, April 9, 2018 at 11:41 am

What I learn about Obesity, I can honestly say that many people have to watch their weight and what they are eating because it's just all within there minds. Within obesity, there are a lot of negative effects that can happen and many people are so unaware which is sad because obesity is becoming a major problem in society today.

Q3 Benchmark : Obesity

Obesity
For our Quarter 3 benchmark , my partner and I focused on Obesity. This was a very interesting project and I learned a lot about hunger and the effects it has on our body. For instance Leptin and Ghrelin which are the main components of hunger; Leptin causes you to feel full while ghrelin makes you feel hungry. After completing this project it makes me want to take better care of my body and help others become more aware of what they are consuming into their bodies and the negative consequences that they have to face.

Comas

Posted by Tajanae Smith in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Monday, April 9, 2018 at 12:23 am

During this benchmark, I learned a lot about comas and what they do to you. A coma is a deep state of unconsciousness. It can happen as a result of a traumatic accident, such as a blow to the head, or a medical condition, for example, some types of infections. I learned that it connects to the nervous system. The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, sensory organs, and all of the nerves that connect these organs with the rest of the body.

For our quarter 3 benchmark, my group researched the biology of the human body, comas and how they affect the human nervous system. Our physical model is a painting which openly shows the functions of the human and how these structures are effected in and out of consciousness. Throughout this project, I learned about many different brain structures, the nerves that effect the, and how the nervous system works in the human body. One interesting fact that I learned while experimenting is that we as humans have a very complex nervous system and though it seems that the brain on;y interprets and receives that we actually can give information a lot better after understanding it over several times as compared to once or twice.

Quarter 3 Benchmark Reflection

After completing this benchmark I can honestly say I learned a lot, especially in terms of what you should to if you see someone having an epileptic seizure. The precautions are somewhat similar to giving cpr. I noticed while doing research I saw nothing about putting something in the persons mouth so they don't choke on their tongue, maybe that is a myth, I learned that, that is not the most important thing to worry about.

Below is a picture of the physical component to our project, which is model of the parts of the brain affected by seizures and epilepsy.

Reflection: For this project, we had to pick a condition that can affect the function and the physiology of the brain. We decided to focus on drug addiction. This is a big epidemic in the US with opioids and heroin.  I learned that drugs flow to your reward system so that your body wants to intake more. Drugs harm the Limbic System, the brain stem, and the Cerebral Cortex.  During our research, we also found ways to stop drug addiction.
