Q3 How Epilepsy Affects the Brain

Posted by Mikeala Commander in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 11:27 pm

For this quarter 3 benchmark, my group and I decided to study how epilepsy affects the brain. Specifically we studied how it works, the causes and effects, and how homeostasis is affected. We wanted to represent our project in a unique way choosing to do a cap showing the cortex. Seizure affects the occipital lobe the most, so we decided to represent this in our cap. From this project I learned a lot more about seizures and its connection to brain activity.

Brain Cap

For this benchmark my group and I studied epilepsy. We studied how it works and what it consists of. To represent this we decided to take a fun twist by creating a hat or baseball cap that shows the cortex. It also shows the occipital lobe where the seizure affect the brain the most. From this project I learned that searching about the brain isn't easy at all but it's worth it.

Sleep vs. The Body

Posted by Mariano Mattei in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 10:41 pm

For our benchmark, my group and I researched sleep as our topic and the effects that losing sleep can cause to your body and to your brain. Personally, I learned a lot about the topic. For example, I learned a lot about the specific hormones that are affected. One of these hormones is leptin, which affects your hunger. Meaning, if you are sleep deprived, your internal clock loses track of night vs. day and disrupts your hunger patterns, making it possible for diabetes/obesity. I had a lot of fun researching this topic because I learned a lot of new things that relate to my health. Website: https://hnur195.wixsite.com/sleepandnerves

Q3 Benchmark How sleep affects the brain

Posted by Brian Bess in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 10:37 pm

Sleep is very important to every living creature especially humans and some people believe that while your sleep your brain is just inactive but this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Your brain does a lot when your sleeping for example you have slow wave sleep and rapid eye movement, which is when you dream. Sleep also helps you better recall events earlier in the day. I wonder if more activity happens in the brain while sleeping that scientist haven't discovered? https://hnur195.wixsite.com/sleepandnerves

Q3 Sleep Human Anatomy Benchmark

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kQ9TcmXMMv4TI31M5Ty84ffaLB7FWWQG5kIzAMprWuI/edit?usp=sharing In this benchmark, my group and I worked together to see how the brain/nervous system was affected by sleep. We got to explore how too much sleep or too little can do wonders to your body. We made a laser cut piece to show the brain with and without sleep, and along with that another piece that shows somebody side by side with little sleep and somebody with enough sleep.

Emotion and Motivation

Posted by Sanai Stafford in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 10:23 pm

For our benchmark, the topics we chose were emotions and motivation. In this, we researched how emotions have an effect on the brain, neurotransmitters, homeostasis and what specific parts are affected by different types of emotion like joy or sadness. We learned there are many parts that are affected but one specifically is the Limbic System, a complex system of nerves and networks in the brain, involving several areas near the edge of the cortex concerned with instinct and mood. It controls basic emotions (fear, pleasure, anger).

Q3 Anatomy Project

Posted by Lamier Howard in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 10:22 pm

Throughout the project, I have learned many things about the brain and comas. For instance, I've learned how there are multiple states you can be in when you suffer a serious brain injury such as vegetative state and complete unconsciousness. I do wonder however if there will be anyway possible to wake people up in comas who have been there for a long time.

When we worked on this project, I learned a lot when it came to how the brain works when it goes into a coma. This project was quite similar to the sports project we did previously as it included brain injuries that could also potentially induce a coma. What's quite interesting is that the brain is in a state of very low activity when in a coma, using itself to heal and to help the person recover. When the brain is in a minimal state of activity, it also sets off a hormonal imbalance and induces swelling. There is still so much we don't know about the brain.

EMOTION AND MOTIVATION

Throughout the benchmark, my group members were amazed by how the specific parts of the brain reflect on specific emotions. We thought that the brain was just all one big blob that had one part that showed how your emotion was affected, but in fact, we were wrong. Your emotions are shown all over the different parts of the brain. The key learnings throughout the benchmark were the anatomy of the nervous system and how it is affected by our emotions. The hypothalamus plays a role in the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which is a part of an emotional reaction. This was important in our findings. This was such a fun project that my group members and I had to complete.

Emotion & motivation

My group did a project on emotion and motivation and how it affects the brain. I have learned a lot about the limbic system and how it plays a role in the physiological processing of emotion. I have also learned how the hypothalamus is an important emotional center of the brain.
