Eric Porter Capstone

Posted by Eric Porter in Senior Capstone · Rosen-Long · ILP/TFI/CAP on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at 8:36 pm

For my capstone, I worked with Anthony, Dexter, and Lamier to create a demo of a video game. The video game is a side-scrolling 2D platformer shooter. The process of making this game was quite hard, as we had to choose between various different strategies in order to create it. We first started with programming languages like C++, Python, and Javascript, but we quickly gave up as it would take too long to learn even though it would have been nice to create something unique. We eventually chose Construct 3 and used its engine to make the game. Over the course of this capstone, we learned how to program, design levels, and create sprites for the game. Lamier, Dexter, and Anthony worked on level design, Anthony was doing most of the programming, I did the sprites, conception, and miscellaneous help. We also learned to create music in Garage Band with Dexter and our friend Samuel doing this. As for playing the game, the controls are: arrow keys for movement; double tapping up allows a double jump; pressing z shoots projectiles.

Here’s the link to the game: Play

Alcohol PSA (Dexter, Lamier, Josh, and Me)

Posted by Eric Porter in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at 8:46 pm
This video is a PSA about the effects of alcohol and alcoholism on the body and how this affects public health in our country. I wanted to choose this topic because of the widespread risk involved with alcohol and how this can affect people that are close to us. Alcohol is also a major influence of economics like tobacco, which is quite terrible.
I contributed some research, a small skit for the PSA video, and I edited everything together. I believe we researched quite thoroughly everything that is associated with alcohol and how it in turn affects public health. We could have prepared the PSA a bit better, with better visuals, but we were limited in our capabilities. I also believe we exceeded on our ability to interview two people for this project.
I believe the most meaningful part of the PSA is the message you can get from it and how not to let alcohol rule your life and your community.

When we worked on this project, I learned a lot when it came to how the brain works when it goes into a coma. This project was quite similar to the sports project we did previously as it included brain injuries that could also potentially induce a coma. What's quite interesting is that the brain is in a state of very low activity when in a coma, using itself to heal and to help the person recover. When the brain is in a minimal state of activity, it also sets off a hormonal imbalance and induces swelling. There is still so much we don't know about the brain.

Sports Physiology Mini-Project with Dexter Le and Lamier Howard

Posted by Eric Porter on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 6:08 pm
This is a mini-project done by Dexter Le, Lamier Howard, and myself. We decided to research American Football and how it affects the body. We looked at how the body moves when playing the sport, how people prepare and exercise, and the injuries that can be sustained.

Media and Design Ignite Presentation

Quarter 1: Website

  • Overview

    • Type: The project was to create a website using an online site builder, like for example, Weebly and Wix. I chose to use Weebly.

    • The overall vision and goal(s): The goal, as mentioned above, is to create a website, but more specifically, a personal website with a resume, list of projects, and contact. A blog could be also included.
My goal was to create just that, but with a very simplistic type of feel and very easy to navigate.

    • Successes: I feel that I have created a good and nice website that anyone can visit and find out who I am. The goal for creating a simplistic website were fulfilled and I am soon planning to add a blog and some extras.

Quarter 2: Computer Science

  • Overview

    • Type: The type of project was a “code highschool” learning site to learn the basics of Javascript.

    • The overall vision and goal(s): To learn and get general knowledge of Javascript, the language of the web. It was done via the way of Karel, a virtual dog who you controlled with Javascript.

    • Successes: The project was quite fun all in all. To me, it was quite easy, considering that I already had a previous knowledge of programming. There were some problems with the logic of the situation and the commands, but I figured it out eventually

Quarter 3: 3-D Modeling

  • Overview

    • Type: The project was to create a 3-D model of something artistic or that can be used in something else. You also had to show the model being used somehow.

    • The overall vision and goal(s): The goal like above was to create a model that can be used. For my model, I chose to create a player model for the game “Audiosurf 2”. It is a rhythm game where you control a character in a spaceship riding along a track made of the music you play, collecting blocks for score in time with the music.

    • Successes: I feel that I made a good model of what I wanted to be in the game. I have also created a custom “skin” to match this space feel as well. Everything else just fell together well.

Quarter 4: Revision

  • Overview

    • I wanted to finalize the product of the Quarter 3 project to make it fit better in the game. Basically, add extra engines, make it colored to fit the theme I wanted and to tweak everything else.

Highlights:

  • High Points

    • A good high point was the ability to learn computer programming in a flexible and fun way.

    • The best growth I had so far was the ability to get better in 3d modeling and some nice techniques.

    • The JavaScript I have learned will help me create more dynamic websites with additional capability.

  • Tips

    • TIP #1: Don’t forget to ask your classmates, especially ones who are working on the same project, for help if you are stuck.

    • Tip #2: The internet has more solutions than you think. Look something up to be sure.

    • Tip #3: If you are working on JavaScript, DON’T forget the semicolon at the end of the line!

3D Modeling

Posted by Eric Porter on Friday, March 24, 2017 at 7:06 pm
This project in question was to learn how to create a 3D model that can be used in a certain situation. In this case, I chose to import this into a video game. I hoped to learn new strategies in 3D modeling, app management, and general problem solving. The steps to complete the project were to go on a 3D modeling suite, complete a model of your own design, and use it in some way. The project was also to be completed with a screencast of myself using the model in a certain place. The main successes that I had with this project were that I grasped the ideas quickly, mostly due to the fact that I dealt with modeling before (somewhat minorly), and the terminology. A failure that I had was that I was lackluster in getting some other apps to work, getting stuck on some stupid ideas, but completing them later after a new take on the concept. I have learned after this, that I can take up anything and quickly use it to my advantage. I can use this knowledge in a future career in graphic design/modeling. I would not change a thing on the way I did this project, based on how it was structured. To anyone doing this project, get help from others, watch videos on help with modeling, etc. I would say this inspired me to pursue more technological careers.

I hoped to learn new strategies in computing, programming, and general problem solving. The steps to complete the project were to go on Code High School, complete lessons to learn about JavaScript and how to apply it to challenges. The project was also to be completed with a screen cast of myself completing one of the assignments in the course. I have learned after this, that I can take up anything and quickly use it to my advantage. I can use this knowledge in a future career in computing, if my mother allows me. Media and Design Website Project (Eric Porter)

This project was to create a website that contains a basic home page, information about ourselves, our resume, and a project page that displays something that you did in or outside of school. For me, the message dictated the medium. Through the completion of this project I will learn the basics of design and how to arrange elements in a website in a way that is informative and comfortable for the reader to see. To do said project, we had to choose an online website editor, I choose Weebly.com, and build from there. I had chosen quite an ugly theme at first, but changed it halfway. I then filled in the corresponding information and finished it. I had a few ups and down during the process, like the theme issue, but I worked my way around them by getting advice from students and the teacher. In the process I have learned arrangement and styling of a website to my own taste. I also learned that I can create something unique for my purposes online. I probably would not change anything to the site if I were to do it over again, but more pictures would be nice. If anyone else were to do this project, I would say, do what you feel is the most comfortable for you to do and for the reader.

Was seldom challenged, challenged myself instead.

I personally am a smart person in real life, I am not bragging by the way, but I feel that I want to find more of a challenge in life, but that almost never happens for me. So, I took of that problem myself. Thsi could also apply to a fictional character as well.

The meaning of my street art is that your life can be hard to look at if you don't know anything, but fining what you are really made of can be very valuable. My art was inspired by the works of M. C. Escher, a well known impossible object artist. The location I chose was to the left of the doors of the art room. I chose this because people can see it after art to be inspired. This project changed my perception of art by showing me the different genres of art and how this is done in rebellion. As I walk around the city now, after this project, I now know to appreciate the art around me.

If you want to see it, when you go outside art, go to the left, and you will see it to the left of a door.

Slide 1: Making bad choices on the internet can cause consequences to you that can have shame.

Slide 2: Many people who see your choices can be a misunderstanding to some.

Slide 3: Make sure you are careful on what you do on the internet to be safe on social media and to secure your future
