Hello everyone!

For my capstone project, I partnered up with Faith Hauger to create a book review website for the SLAB community called LE LIVRE. Our project seeks to promote a safe space for students to engage in discussions and form connections through their shared love of books. Welcoming students to express their thoughts and opinions freely, leads to an environment of mutual respect and understanding among its users. Encouraging students to build relationships with each other and freely exchange perspectives on the books they read, without fear of judgment. Ultimately, by creating an inclusive space for students to connect and engage, helps promote social and emotional well-being, community building, and fostering a sense of belonging.

In addition to promoting a reading culture, LE LIVRE addresses literacy issues and provides external resources and tools to generate awareness about such matters and promotes effective community engagement. In summary, the website creates a reading culture that promotes lifelong learning, intellectual curiosity, and improvement in literacy skills.

The creation of LE LIVRE along with our book club, has taught us how students interact with a community that encourages them to explore and expand their interests. It taught us the impact and difference that having a community can cause. Which was also our guiding question and main goal for LE LIVRE. We look forward to continuing to foster a love of reading and literature among our peers and we are excited to see how our project will be received by the SLAB community.

Hayley Bartholomew-Lowery's Capstone

The goal of this senior capstone project is to develop a workshop on financial literacy for 10th graders, with a particular emphasis on improving their comprehension of checking and savings accounts as a small aspect of finance. By delivering this fundamental information, we hope to encourage a favorable attitude toward money and close the gap between conventional school curricula and real-world financial knowledge. The workshop aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to make wise financial decisions and form lifelong financial literacy habits through interactive sessions and real-world examples. The project has the potential to have a positive influence on people, families, and communities, ensuring a more promising financial future for everyone involved. Then at the end, students create 2 infographics of the information they for from each session about a checking and saving account.

Faith Hauger Capstone

For my capstone project, I wanted to do something for the reading community at SLA Beeber. Reading is something that’s solved my boredom, broadened my horizons, and formed connections with others in my community. Knowing the power of reading, I wanted to do a project that would help bring others together who have a shared interest in reading. I paired up with my friend, and fellow book lover, Kaesy Felix. We decided to make a website where people could talk about books with others. Inspired by websites like Reese’s Book Club, Between Two Books, and Belletrist, we’ve created a website where we discuss our favorite books in a variety of genres, our monthly book club picks, and new releases. My favorite section, and the main goal of our website, is the tab where people are able to talk with others about the book of the month. With the use of padlet, we’ve created “walls” where users can add posts. In response to others, people can like and comment, further starting conversations. The general idea of this project was to create a “digital book club” where people don’t need to meet up at the same time, place, etc., and can talk about books and have discussions like we might in person. Honestly, this project has been really fun and interesting for me because I’ve loved being able to talk about the books and being able to use my creative skills to produce a website that looks and functions how we want.

Hello!

For my capstone, me along with Maya Johnson and Alexandria Thompson decided to create our school play from scratch. I took part in directing, writing, and orchestrating the lights. During our time directing the play, I learned more about time management. There is a really tight and strict time schedule to abide by, and it was difficult at times to achieve those time goals, especially during the writing phase. One of the most exciting parts of the project was writing the script. Writing all the twists and events was a major brainstorm of creativity. There were times where writer’s block came, and we couldn’t come up with anything for days. However, when we saw our script being performed, we couldn’t help being so proud of everything we accomplished. Not just us, but our actors who did marvelously. Our main goals in our play were to create something for everyone to enjoy and to allow the actors to feel free in incorporating their thoughts into the play. In the end, our play came out to be amazing.

For my Capstone Project, I had no clue, what I was gonna do, 12th came to me, in a rush with the events, of college, and getting school work on top, and plus had two surgery, which made it tough for me to decide what my capstone was gonna be, but I had some help, It was the discovery center a place of nature, and we had a hand on- experience, learning about birds, and more about plants, and it was a cool experience, to learn about stuff, I never knew about. With this project, I learn more about STEM mainly about science, and got to experience something new, that never came to mind before.

Isaiah Singleton's Capstone

Posted by Isaiah Singleton in CTE Senior Capstone Project · Lawrence on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at 5:11 pm

Hello all!

My Capstone for my Senior Year envisioned a technical cleaning service that was schoolwide for anyone to have their devices cleaned. My guiding question through this endeavor was “How can I help the gaming community at SL@B by developing a Computer Technical Cleaning Service at Science Leadership Academy at Beeber?” To attempt to accomplish this task, I first researched what tools I needed in order to disassemble and clean any technical device I came across. I then researched how other similar local Philadelphia-owned businesses managed their operations and came up with an appointment based system for people to sign up to on days where I had free time to clean their devices. Lastly, I then advertised my business with flyers throughout the school with a QR code for people to sign up to.

In total, I got the honor to clean 15 different technical devices ranging from Video Game Consoles, Laptops, Microwaves, Fans, etc. I got to see a different side of myself in the eyes of pristine productivity. With the accumulated knowledge I had under my belt in how to clean technical devices, it became second nature to me in properly diagnosing a problem with a person’s device, knowing what tools to use, and knowing exactly where to look for screws and whatnot to dissemble a technical device. I become another beast when it came to this kind of thing as I treated it as a game of pre-determined chess. I’m grateful for doing this Capstone.

Fury Basso-Davis Capstone

Hello reader!

For my Capstone, I created a number system for organization that will be implemented when using new tripods for projects, whether they are a class or personal use within school. With this system, said lost tripods will be found with much more ease. Each tripod and its corresponding microphone have been labeled with a number 1-8. There is also a notebook where students must sign out each tripod they are using with their name and email address. I was also able and privileged enough to collect multiple pieces of student art that have been displayed in the halls of SLA Beeber. Art is important in schools because creativity helps us learn, and school buildings can be bleak, however, SLA Beeber is not. There is art in almost every hallway, but I felt as though it needed more that was created by students who want their art to be displayed. Art is a way of expression and a way to be heard. Being able to express yourself through more than words creates a healthy environment for learning. During these stressful times of sickness, corruption, and a betrayal of human rights, art is a way to bring us together and make us stronger as a community. Thank you to everyone who contributed to my project, and a special thanks to Zoe Strauss for allowing me to be a part of her space for two years, Mr. Rosen-Long for helping my project move forward, and of course, Mr. Lawrence for seeing me for who I am, and always encouraging me to continue down the path I am on!

Hudhafa Ibn Abdul Basir Staton Capstone Project

Posted by Hudhafa Staton in CTE Senior Capstone Project · Lawrence on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at 12:41 pm

My senior capstone was a series of interviews asking students about school and how they feel about school. Coming into my first few months of school I had no idea what I wanted to do for capstone. To be quite honest I didn’t want to do the project at all, but I did want to graduate. Now originally I wanted to do a podcast but that ultimately failed so I decided to make an informational video that teachers and staff of our school could use in order to improve on making Science Leadership Academy Beeber a better learning environment. The process was sort of a struggle. There was a big change of plan. Like I said before I initially wanted to do a podcast but people had their own assignment and couldn’t all get together. So I then changed it to a series of interviews that can have as many people as I want in there. I think everything has room for improvement but I did the best I could for this project and I am proud of it.

Marlia Ramberan Capstone

Just like everyone else in my senior class, our high school years were cut short. I came into SLA at beeber with the world at my feet, excited to see what high school had in store for me. When a senior capstone project was brought to my attention, my immediate thought was a yearbook. How can the core values be incorporated into the SLA Beeber 2023 Senior Yearbook to remain for the generations to follow? The yearbook required a large amount of collaboration from start to finish. We needed to brainstorm ideas, edit, communicate, and research in order for this project to be successful. We started off with finalizing a theme, after that, all our input really came from the senior class as a whole. We would run to each advisory and present our ideas or concerns and receive their feedback. Being able to work on this yearbook in my free time taught me about time management skills and creativity. I worked on the formatting, uploaded the pictures our senior class wanted to incorporate into the yearbook, and helped with the design. This project is beneficial to my community because it allows the senior class to leave with memories and positive notes on their high school experience. I would say my senior capstone project was a success because not only did I complete it in a timely manner, but it’s also something that the senior class can keep with them as they go onto the next chapter in their lives.

Alexandria Thompson Capstone

For my capstone project, I chose to take on the challenge of creating the school’s play from scratch. I took part in writing the script, designing costumes, and even helping in directing. This experience taught me the invaluable skills of collaboration and creativity. One of my favorite parts of this project was having the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of individuals. Each person brought their own unique skills and perspectives to the table, and together we created a cohesive team that fueled the creative process. In addition to writing the play, I took on the role of designing costumes. From finding inspiration to choosing materials, and sewing, this aspect of the project pushed me to think outside the box. By the end of the project, everyone I worked with could try new things and find new hobbies that they enjoyed. Whether it be acting, dancing, or being a part of a crew they tried a new skill. My senior capstone project experience was an unforgettable journey of collaboration and creativity. The process taught me the power of working with others to bring a vision to life.
