Environmental Science

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vlnICQPftc In this video, we talk about many things. We talk about litter and its potential to hurt the environment. Not only do we provide facts about what litter do we also explain the environmental justice people need to do to stop littering. By hurting the environment you're not just hurting others, you're hurting you too. In this project, I helped edit/upload the video, and I was in the video as a character. One thing I did well in was the research that went behind our presentation. If I was to do this project differently I would choose a different topic because litter is not the only problem for our environment. The most meaningful part of this PSA to me was the skits my group and I came up with. We showed how some people will care so little about litter and inform them of why it hurts everything.

Q2 Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Aliyah Watson in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 7:10 pm

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vlnICQPftc The topic of choice for our video was littering and how it greatly affects the environment as well as the plants, people, and animals in it. We gave evidence and facts about the way littering does affect different communities and why it's a huge problem. My group and I noticed how people don't really think of littering as such a big deal and doesn't realize the damage it is doing to our communities so we felt it was important to being informative on its' negative impacts on our communities. I played a role in the video as someone clueless as to to what littering does to the environment, I also gave some additional ideas on locations of recording and made sure I participated well in the group. I think I did a good job in doing my part in terms of completing checkpoints, participating in the group and being in the video, as well as helping where help was needed. I probably could've gave a bit more input on the script and recordings but all in all it turned out well. The most meaningful part in creating the PSA to me was finding out all of the issues and negative impacts littering has. I figured it had a bad influence on communities but I didn't realize how much damage it could do to not only our environment but everything in it including humans, so it was interesting, I learned a lot.

PSA on Lead Poisoning

Posted by Christopher Jones in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 6:48 pm

In my video, we cover a variety of topics; with our main point/issue being lead poisoning. Our topics range from environmental justice to lead poisoning to then looking at an environmentally just society. The idea of this benchmark was to research and talk about a natural disaster or something that happens in our environment that negatively affects it and makes it unjust. We chose lead poisoning because it stood out to us after reviewing it in class earlier in this year. After talking about this topic in class this year each member of my group and I still had remaining questions about lead poisoning and figured this would be the perfect time to investigate them.My role in the group was basically to find all the information about our topic and relay it to our script. Which I think I did a pretty good job on. Of course, there's always room for improvement but for this project, I think I would give myself based on the role I played an 8 out 10.One thing I did well just do my role but some things I could have done better include using my time more wisely while also stepping up and becoming a more vocal leader in my group. The most meaningful part for me during this PSA,  was just me gaining knowledge about a specific topic and then spreading to others.

Lead Posioning

Posted by Stephanie Devlin in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 5:53 pm

For our Public Service Announcement (the video) we decided to make a “Breaking News” video because we thought it would grabs people attention, and make people more aware of the situation going on with lead poisoning. In the video it is split up into different “segments” such as the Introduction, an interview, news reporters talking about the information that we thought was the most important to educate people about the problems of lead poisoning. I chose this topic because I was really interested in researching more about the lead problems in Philadelphia, and also I wanted to educate myself more on this topic. I really wanted to do this topic because I feel like more people need to be aware of this problem, and more people need to step up to fix the many issues that are involved in the city of Philadelphia. I didn’t know much about the lead problem in Philadelphia, and doing this project helped me gain more information and more knowledge about this topic, and also made me want to put a stop to this problem. We need to all come together to fix these environmental justice issues, and make Philadelphia a clean, safe place to live.

Throughout this process I’ve reflected a lot on what I have contributed to the project and the role I’ve played in the group. I contributed a lot for my group since the beginning of this benchmark. I reached out to my group members since the start to figure out if they wanted to be in the group, and which topic we wanted to pick. I contributed to the research part of the project by completing the questions / research I was assigned too, and also adding on to other parts of the research (such as additional research, or helping anyone who needed help for their part.). I contributed in the recording of the PSA too by recording my group members, and also helping them remember their lines, or giving ideas for the video. I also edited the video all on my own with the help of only of two of my group members. I believe my role for this project was to be a helper, and being the person to make sure I’m on top of things and so are my group members. I helped guided them through this project, and did anything they needed me or wanted me to do.

As I reflect on our benchmark that we were given, I believe that there was a lot of things that I did well for this benchmark, and a few things that  my group members and I could’ve done differently. I believe throughout this whole process I was well at submitting all checkpoints on time, making sure I completed all of my work (my part) that I was assigned, recording my parts, and also communicating with my group members, and also editing. If we had another opportunity to redo this benchmark over again, I’d do differently is to not rush things, and take my time and look over what we have done because I rush a lot of times because I get stressed and feel the need to rush. I believe next time I would slow down, and make sure the work is done right, and that everything we need done, is finished.

The most meaningful part of this experience of creating this PSA would have to be learning more about the lead poisoning in Philadelphia. This experience made me realize a lot about how big of an issue lead poisoning is in the city. It was amazing learning more about it because we read an article earlier in the quarter about lead, and now we get to make people more aware about it, because if we make people more aware, more people will hopefully join in stopping and fighting to get rid of lead all together (or majority.)

Q2 Benchmark: Video and Reflection

Posted by Tyrone Hart in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 5:33 pm

Below is the link to our video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vlnICQPftc

In our video, the main topic of focus was environmental justice and how littering has it’s effect on the community. We acknowledged littering as a problem in society and gave a lesson on what littering does to a city, specifically the inter-cities vs. suburban areas. We chose this topic because we feel as though litter isn’t taken as seriously as it should be, and the effect it has on communities is much bigger than it’s currently made out to be.

I played the lead role in our video, as I was the man who taught the lesson on litter. I also wrote a chunk of the script, and created most of the ideas used in our video. I communicated well with my group and took care of everything needed from me.
We conveyed our knowledge of litter and it's effect on the environment very well in my opinion, and we always did a good job of utilizing class time to our advantage. However if there were anything that I could do differently to improve this project, it would probably be to wear better attire in the videos, so I could look more professional.
The most meaningful part of this experience has been learning more about litter. I know I for one take litter for granted, and just throw my trash anywhere but doing research and creating a video on this topic really opened my eyes to the importance of taking good care of the environment.

Toxic City Infographic

The thing that stands out to me the most is that the city isn't removing the lead paint from the houses affected. I think it affects enough people at this point that it's an issue they are responsible for dealing with.

Philadelphia is dealing with a serious problem dealing with lead. It's affecting many kids in poverty stricken areas and it's not really being fixed. We need doctors to test children for lead poisoning before it gets too late. There's a few ways to fix it and it needs to be done as soon as possible!

What stood out to me during this project was actually learning about Lead poisoning itself. Before this mini project I did not know what was lead poisoning and or even how it effected people. I've also came to known during my research that I live in a city with very high in lead poisoning and no body had ever warn me about it till now. All I am still wondering is that. How do we save people who are like me and not aware of this? How can they not ignored the symptoms of high lead poisoning? And how do you know when your house was built?

Toxic City

Posted by Hadja Diallo in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 10:34 pm

There is severe lead poisoning in Philadelphia and it’s most common in children. The city doesn't have enough money to curve every child that has lead poisoning so they are the only concern for the ones that have a level 10 of lead poisoning. I think that not caring the children that have low levels of lead is very dangerous if it is not treated when it first starts then when it gets worst. So I think they should balance out helping the children with low and high levels of lead poisoning. I think they should find a way that parents can prevent lead poison from their homes.
