George Gee - Natural Disasters

Posted by George Gee in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 11:39 pm

How do the earth systems affect each other? Earth Systems affect each other by interacting with each other. This can be on a major scale such as something like a tsunami but on a slower and smaller basis are interactions like soil biodiversity.

How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? Having a common understanding of environmental science can aid in handling natural disasters, by being aware and being able to mitigate some natural disasters. For the ones that cannot be helped an understanding in environmental science can help communities respond in the event of an emergency.

My reaction to my findings was pretty surprising because I had no idea that drought could happen anywhere in the world.

They all affect each other by interconnecting. For instance the atmosphere influences the hydrosphere by having changes in temperatures that directly influences the hydrological cycle ie; an atmospheric change such as heat could result in evaporation after rain. The Geosphere helps affect the biosphere as from it living organisms get minerals for everyday things such as coal to power things. The hydrosphere and geosphere connect because bodies of water could have an huge impact on land such as glaciers, lakes, oceans while in turn the geosphere shapes coastlines which can affect where bodies of water are placed and how they flow. The biosphere and atmosphere interconnect because living organisms depend on the atmosphere for not only weather but gasses such as oxygen. In turn things like photosynthesis benefit the atmosphere because it regulates gases such as carbon dioxide.

I think understanding environmental science will help aid in handling/ preventing natural disasters because it will provide more insight into how these systems work. With more insight comes a level of understanding that is crucial when it comes to aiding because you can find ways to navigate those earth system(s) to prevent natural disasters. An example of this is studying seismic activity that focuses on monitoring tectonic plates, from this it can be seen what places/regions are at more risk of experiencing something like an earthquake, which would in turn help give time to prepare by the way infrastructure in that region is developed, evacuation steps and trends to predict the next time one could occur.

My overall reaction was surprise. Usually when I hear about a disaster such as a tornado I don’t think beyond a base level understanding. Researching about it for this project though I never knew how complex they could be, so much so to the point where if winds are strong enough events like twin tornadoes could occur which I had no knowledge of before this project.

How do the Earth systems affect each other? - Earth Systems affect each other by interacting with each other. An example of this volcano eruption.

How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? - An understanding of environmental science aids can help with handling natural disasters because you can learn how they work.

How do the earth systems affect each other? Earth systems affect each other because one natural disaster can lead to another. Like an earthquake making a tsunami. These are 2 different systems basically interacting.

How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? Studying environmental science provides aid during natural disasters, because we get a better understand on how they work , the threats they pose, and how to handle them during or after.

I was surprised that earthquakes can off set other natural disasters. I was also interested by learning the ways earthquakes aftermath impact communities and surrounding areas.

How do the earth systems affect each other?

Earth systems affect each other by different things happening and affecting each other. For example earth has volcanic eruptions and tsunamis. Tsunamis are caused by the displacement of water.

How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters Having an understanding of environmental science aid will help in handling natural disasters because with learning disasters you’ll understand how to survive them and be safe

1.) The Earth’s systems, including the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere, are intricately interconnected. Changes in one system can have cascading effects on others. For instance, alterations in the atmosphere, such as increased greenhouse gas emissions, can lead to global warming, impacting the hydrosphere by melting polar ice caps and subsequently affecting the biosphere through changes in habitats and ecosystems.

2.) Having an understanding of environmental science can aid in handling natural disasters by providing insights into the underlying processes that contribute to their occurrence. This knowledge can inform the development of effective mitigation strategies, early warning systems, and sustainable recovery plans, thereby minimizing the impact of disasters on human lives and the environment.

How do the earth systems affect each other? The Earth’s different systems, like the atmosphere, water, land, and living things, all connect and influence each other. When one changes, it affects the others.

How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters?

Environmental science helps us deal with natural disasters by letting us understand why they happen. This then helps us predict and get ready for events like hurricanes or floods, so we can protect people better. It also helps us use sustainable practices to reduce the harm from these disasters.

  1. The Earth systems affect each other in different ways. O am only going to talk about one way which is that natural disasters can cause each other. While researching Tsunamis, I saw that Earthquakes and landslides can create Tsunamis.

  2. Learning environmental science will help people understand what to do when encountering natural disasters and what can be done to prevent them.

  3. I found this project interesting because even though I already knew what caused Tsunamis I didn’t pay attention to the role of matter or how Tsunamis affected the Earth system.

  1. The hydrosphere and geosphere interact when rain water weathers rocks, effectively ”melting” them away over thousands of years.
  2. Studying natural hazards, we can better understand how these phenomena work and the threats they pose.

Gayle- natural disasters

How do the earth systems affect each other? How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters?

  • If the atmosphere is off, like too much C02 for instance, it will affect earth in many ways such as, global warming. The Earth has gone up one degrees celsius. Which doesn’t sound like a lot but the summers are getting hotter and if you notice we haven’t had a good snow storm since I was like 3 or 4 ( 2009-2010).

  • If we know what in the environment contributes to the disasters, then we can stop them from occurring. We can stop floods by not cutting down trees. When you cut down a tree, the C02 that was in it gets released into the atmosphere which creates more heat. The more humidity there is, the more rain will come in the future. When there’s a lot of rain, it floods.
