Q4 Benchmark "BN Glasses" by Nateerah and Bella
It's dim wicked wit lit
The reason I choose to make my sculpture is quite sad when you think about it. The very first pair of glasses I got was just the beginning of it all. I broke them because they fell from my face to the floor, and then in pieces. If I were to explain how I broke every pair of glasses we would be here awhile, so instead, I’ll just wrap it up and say my most significant pair that broke. On a fine early day of school, my friends and I were walking down a street. When one of them came across a punch buggy, she punched me in the arm, nothing bad about a little punch. A few seconds later an acquaintance of mine turns around for a punch, this eventually led to my glasses being broken, that would be the 5th pair of glasses I've broken. So that I why I choose glasses. A nice, sad significance.

I chose the DNA double helix because it shows the most interesting part of me. I was inspired by my favorite biologist, Francis Crick, who along with James Watson Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin had discovered DNA, and my favorite artist, Spencer Shay from ICarly. As a kid I found Deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA, the coolest thing in the world because it allowed organisms to develop, survive, and reproduce without having worries. If I wasn't introduced to the double helix as a child, I might have never wanted to learn more and more about science! Anyways, I love science, and I can't say that enough! Science showed me how photosynthesis works all the way up to the genetic makeup of a horse and all the way up to the voltage of an object, and it keeps going. Science even opened a door to understanding math easier, and this all happened because I took the time as a kid to understand what DNA was.

This plays an important role in my life because I’m part of the LGBT+ community, and that it means a lot to me as well so I decided to make a flag that lights up to show that pride.

I chose a tree for my sculpture because it represents growth. Over the past few years I have grown a lot as a person and I thought that this was a good representation of that. Trees lose their leaves during the winter but when the weather gets nice again they grow back. This represents how sometimes I have bad days but always grow and learn from them. Trees are very strong and so am I so I wanted to show that through my sculpture.

We chose them because they have decades of experience with music and how the business works. The way that this fits both of our interests is that we are both musicians that wish to grow in the industry and eventually make a living from doing what we love. So, for us to put on our own show and be able to self-manage (being the producer, event coordinator, and performers) is an opportunity to show that we are ready to start our careers in music as we go on to college. We both have experience in performing but neither of us has ever really held our own show.
Sources: “Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts.” Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, 05 Feb. 2017. Web. 04 Apr. 2017. The reason why we have this article is because this is where we are having the event for our capstone. I have been going to the Clef Club of Jazz for 5 years. I know the artistic director and my mother works as a secretary on saturday. I go to the Clef Club every saturday for band. I have taught students that go there as well. “Young Musicians Flourish in Philadelphia.” NPR. NPR, 19 Dec. 2007. Web. 04 Apr. 2017. The reason why we picked this article because both of us being artists in Philadelphia we both can be inspired by this young girl. People in Philadelphia do not really value youth artest that wish to become musical really unless it is classical which is really bias to me. Muse, Queen. “Silencing the Music at Philly Schools.” NBC 10 Philadelphia. NBC 10 Philadelphia, 02 Apr. 2017. Web. 04 Apr. 2017. The reason why we chose this article is because it can relate to us because we are in the Philadelphia school system and we are in our last year of high school. As of this moment we do not have music in or school for the past four years I have tried to put a music program in my school. We feel like music is an outlet that everyone should be exposed to and this event that we are having for our capstone is for this. To make people aware that really don’t have music in our schools. “The Benefits of Music Education.” PBS. Public Broadcasting Service, 25 May 2012. Web. 04 Apr. 2017. The way that this article relates to what we are doing is because we have music in our lives and we are very smart. It’s like we have untouched mental abilities that people don’t play instruments really know about. The effect that music has on the brain is really good. So to have this event we will be talking about how the effects of music can help people mentally become more intellectual. For us, our job is to make sure that everyone is aware of the positive effects that music has for people. “How Playing Music Affects The Developing Brain.” How Playing Music Affects The Developing Brain | CommonHealth. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Apr. 2017. The way that is article relates to my capstone project is that there is a study that shows how music can help the development in young people because there are this in the brain that musicians develop rather than those who do not play an instrument. The overall goal for us is to stress how important music is in everyone’s life. “Schools are starving for arts education.” Home. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Apr. 2017. The way that this article relates to my capstone project is that it helps explain that schools are not really providing the right tools that students need to express themselves in the arts. Stressing the arts would help the school district of Philadelphia make a good and smart decision to put the arts back into most schools.
Quarter 4 Botany Urban farm Benchmark
Reflection
Our interview consisted of a girl who had been working in a pretty well known Urban farm, Bartram's Gardens. In the interview we were able to receive much important information dealing with farming and also the impact it has on the community around it. We found out what everyday responsibilities there was working at their particular farm and farms in general. We then asked about the objective of Bartram's Gardens and when the organization came around. The organization has been around since 2008. Bartrams gardens has an impact on the community because they encourage the community to eat better they let the community know that they are growing fruits and vegetables. We also went into the factors that affect urban farming and the most important factor of urban farming and that was described to be the soil.
The factors that affected urban farming the most is the weather. Snow affects the farm because during the snow season the green family are the only things that grow. During the time the only things that grow in the snow are plants like lettuce. That is why they harvest during the summer time to get ready for the winter time. Another factor that affects it is rain. That is not directly affect the plants but for the workers. The rain helps the plants grow but as far as the workers they do not work in the rain, so they try their best to wake up the beds during the rain. In schools one of the main things that affects the gardens is consistency. Obviously you are not able to be there during later hours and weekends.
When you are growing these vegetables if you have your own garden they are free for you it just comes with labor. The gardens also sell their foods to the community. The economy is affected because these foods are normally cheaper but better for you. They also make society healthier because this is a healthier selection of foods opposed to store bought and you could taste the difference. Probably the career of a farmer or nutritionist connects botany and Urban farming concepts.
