Sustainable Mcdonald's

Posted by Benjamin Hahn in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 8:19 am

It is evident from objective data and statistics that Mcdonald’s’s business practices are not sustainable for the environment and will play a role in the depleting the earth of its natural resources, and warming to planet to a point of no return.

Mcdonald’s has two meat suppliers: Keystone Foods (now owned by Tyson Foods) and Lopez Foods. Tyson Foods takes pride in only working with independent, family owned farms. But while these farms are independent and family owned they are factory farms. According to the Ethical Choices Program, factory farming is the largest contributor to environmental damage. Tyson foods justifies their practices by glorifying the farms they work with, drawing the conclusion that if they are family owned, they must be ethical. But this conclusion is false because the fact that a business is family owned does not mean it is a small, ethical business, Mcdonald’s itself is family owned. Furthermore, the farms that tyson foods works with are hardly even family owned as tyson foods owns the animals, and the food that the animals eat. Only the land and equipment are independently owned.

Lopez foods produces the beef patties for the hamburgers sold at Mcdonald’s. They are made in a large scale factory, and all large scale factories contribute to air pollution if they do not use renewable energy. Lopez foods is not a farm, and they will not publicly state their suppliers. It can be inferred that this is because their suppliers farming practices are even more unethical than those from tyson farms.

New plan for sustainability:

In order to ensure that the food sold at Mcdonald’s is sustainability. Mcdonald’s should introduce Clean Meat as their new supplier. Clean Meat produces 100% real meat without killing animals. They do this by taking a sample of the animals cells, and then growing the cells outside of the animal. This will help the environment because far less animals will be required to produce the same amount of meat, and it will drastically reduce the costs of meat because a virtually endless supply of meat can be produced from a single animal.

In addition, Mcdonald’s should cease opening new restaurants, there are already 37,241 worldwide, which is more than enough. And all current restaurants should be powered by forms of renewable energy such as solar energy and wind energy.

One Point Perspective Final Project

Posted by Benjamin Hahn in ART 9 - Hertz - a1 on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 10:59 am

Six Word Memoir:

You can’t stop Rock and Roll

This memoir means exactly what it says, you can’t, and never will stop rock and roll. I chose this statement because I have been listening to rock music since I was a toddler and it is just about the coolest thing ever. The most prevalent memory I have with rock and roll was when my friend Elijah brought his mp3 player into school and we listened to Green Day at recess.

Connection of drawing to memoir:

In the drawing I placed a rock poster, a guitar, a song in the process of being written, and a “Rock Weekly” Magazine. These connect to the six word memoir because they are items a typical person into Rock and Roll would have in their room.

For this project I wanted to choose something related to skateboarding. The object I chose is a miniature skateboard. I chose to use this foundation for the project because I have been skateboarding since I was 12 years old and the miniature skateboard shows my interest in the sport in a small space.

SkateRock Street Art

Posted by Benjamin Hahn in ART 9 - Hertz - a1 on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 10:51 am
SkateRock is a rock band that I am in. It focuses on the two coolest things ever: Skateboarding and Rock Music.

Bands that inspired me to start SkateRock are: Green Day, Blink 182, Weezer, ACDC, Linkin Park, Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Paramore, and NOFX.

After drawing the SkateRock logo on the square we were given for the project I
chose a spot right next to a skateboarding poster in the hallway and put it up there. I thought this was an appropriate spot because of SkateRock's love for skateboarding.

This project made me realize that even something you drew that you thought was cool could be art.

I see a lot of street art around the city and this project made me appreciate it a lot more.

Ausencia

Apenas te he dejado,

vas en mi, cristalina

o temblorosa,

o inquieta, herida por mi mismo

o colmada de amor, como cuando tus ojos

se cierran sobre el don de la vida

que sin cesar te entrego.

Amor mio,

nos hemos encontrado

sedientos y nos hemos

bebido toda el agua y la sangre,

nos encontramos

con hambre

y nos mordimos

como el fuego muerde,

dejandonos heridos.

Pero esperame

guardame tu dulzura.

Yo te dare tambien

una rosa.

English:

I have scarcely left you

when you go in me, crystalline,

or trembling,

or uneasy, wounded by me

or overwhelmed with love, as when your eyes

close upon the gift of life

that without cease I give you.

My love,

we have found each other

thirsty and we have

drunk up all the water and the blood,

we found each other

hungry

and we bit each other

as fire bites,

leaving wounds in us.

But wait for me,

keep for me your sweetness.

I will give you too

a rose.

Spanish 2 Project Uploads

Posted by Benjamin Hahn in SPANISH 2 - Moran - C on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 9:00 am
Dia de los muertos, in this project we made masks and sugar skulls to commemorate a passed loved one. The we wrote in English and in spanish about it, we also made a video.

A few years back, my cat Merlin passed away. He was a completely grey cat. He was blind for a few years before his passing. He was an awesome cat and he kept us company. We used to call him the “Blind Ninja” because he would not let our other cats pick on him.

I chose to do this project on Merlin because there has been only been one human death in my family, and I never met the person. Merlin was the closest death in my lifetime. The death of a pet can be just as powerful as a human death.

I tried to make the skull resemble Merlin as best as I could. It has gray glitter, to represent Merlin’s identifying physical feature. I attached ears to it so people could tell that it is a cat that my sugar skull represents. And I put a red feather as a tail. the reason I chose red was because when he died, we buried him in our backyard and planted a rose there.

I feel like día de los muertos is a time when you can just let it all out. And remember the good times. It is a time when you can forget about anything that may be bothering you. It’s a time of letting go.

Estoy un niño en el noveno grado. Estoy alto y flaco.

Nosotros tenemos Mi gato Ginger. Nosotros Estamos felíz.

Ben's Social Media Survival Guide

Posted by Benjamin Hahn in TECH 1 - Hertz - a2 on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 1:47 pm

        Ben’s Social Media Survival Guide

Social Media is a place where we can instantly share our thoughts, photos, and almost anything you can think of. It can be a tricky place at times, so I am giving you my best advice for “surviving” social media with all the negativity there is in it.

There are frequent times when the lines between who someone is online and who they are in real life can be blurred. On my social media I usually post things related to skateboarding which accurately reflects my interests in the offline world but does not fully and completely describe my personality. It’s important to keep in mind that people tend to expect your online personality to be your personality at all times and not just your leisure personality when you are not in work, school, or any other non leisure situation. So when people see me online they see my leisure personality.

It is a good idea to have a mental filter that you send your content through before posting it, because once something has been said it is usually there to stay and is difficult to take back. So there are some things you should consider before posting anything on the internet. My favorite thing to think about is if I would mind every single person in the entire world seeing it. The good things about sharing online is that you can communicate with your friends and family when you’re not in the same place, and share experiences with other people who were not there. The bad things are that privacy is not a thing, it’s hard to take things back, and anyone can use and recycle your content without your consent.

There are three specific things you should think about before posting online and they are: lack of control, permanence, and immediacy. Once something is posted, there is no telling who will repost it or reuse it. This is lack of control. Once something is on the internet it’s usually there to stay. While most websites have an option to delete your content, someone could have just as easily taken a screenshot of it. This is permanence. Before the internet, when you had to write things by hand and publish them through a newspaper or magazine, you had a lot of time to think about it whether or not you actually wanted to say it or not. Now that everything is at the click of a button, people will often do things without thinking enough. This is immediacy. These are the factors that are the reason a lot of people make mistakes on the internet.

But how can these “mistakes” affect you in the long run? Some jobs will require a “social media background check” before hiring you. They use the information given on your resume and put it into a computer that will search through any account registered under your name. Searching for inappropriate material, discriminatory comments, or anything else that may make them think twice about hiring you. I personally do not agree with it, because as I stated earlier, your personality on social media is usually your leisure personality, and not your professional personality. However next time you’re about to post something, remember that a future job might want to check your social media content.

Some might argue that we have freedom of speech, but most of these people don’t really know what freedom of speech really means. You have the right to peaceably speak freely without the fear of punishment by law. Although you can’t threaten people, you can’t defame people, you can’t spread false information at the expense of someone else, and you can’t say anything that would promote violence. On the internet it can get complicated, even if it wasn’t originally your words that were unprotected by the first amendment. If you repost something and it costed someone their life or their job, you could be held legally responsible for it. Another place where it can get complicated is the concept of trolling. Internet “trolls” are people who say ridiculous things on the internet, not because they mean them, but because they want to get a response from you. Their main goal is to get attention. They may say mean or hurtful things, or they might just say something crazy that they know you will respond to. There is a simple solution to the problem of trolls, and that is to simply not give them the response that they want and it will no longer be fun for them. Though it can be hard to tell a troll from someone who is just a terrible person.

You could always post anonymously, but even that does not truly hide your identity behind the screen. Anyone can find the IP address of your device and the network you are connected to, even where the it is located. It just may take some work to do. The good however is that you can post things that require work to find out who posted it. And a large portion of people who use websites that have anonymous options are not willing to take the effort to find out who you are except under extreme measures.

To conclude this article, I will leave you with my three best tips for to anyone on social media: 1, Do not post or say anything you wouldn’t want every single person in the whole world to see and freely repost and reuse. 2, Do not post inappropriate material or illegal activity. And 3, Next time you see a post or comment and you think, “gosh that’s rude,” or “gosh that’s ridiculous,” discontinue your urge to respond because there is a good chance that it might be a troll. Thank you for reading my blog, see you next time.
