Jada Reynolds - Capstone

Posted by Jada Reynolds in Senior Capstone · Aziz · ILP/TFI/CAP on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 9:15 pm

For my capstone, I focused on trying to remove allergy triggers from the school and air quality improvement. I made a “PSA” to try and inform the students of how to prevent certain things from happening in the school.

I talked about asthma and how people who don’t even have asthma, can have asthma-like responses to certain things. I also briefly discussed heat strokes and heat exhaustion, plants that can be useful, and simple forms of modern technology that can maintain their usefulness as well.

Strokes, they can kill you. - A SLA@Beeber PSA

Posted by Jada Reynolds in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at 11:59 pm

As you can tell from the title, my group and I did our PSA on strokes and heart disease. I wanted to work with this because heart disease is a larger spectrum for me to learn about one or more specific things. We decided to focus more on strokes. I think I did a good portion of the project. Tyheim did the most considering he got the interview and he edited most of the video by himself. I think something we could’ve done differently was getting more information to back up some of our claims, but we’re well past that now. The most meaningful part of the PSA was the informative portion with our interviewee Andrew Couchara.

Factors that affect public health can be overall lifestyle choices such as what foods you eat, how often you eat those foods, exercise, and genetics. Rich people tend to have better healthcare because they can afford it. They also tend to need it less because they can afford healthier foods, they have more time to exercise, and they probably live in cleaner environments where the lead isn’t as potent, and the air is less polluted.

Lead Pollution and it's Effects on the Environment

Posted by Jada Reynolds in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 7:19 pm

I wanted to research lead pollution because lead is everywhere, even in places we didn’t expect at first. We’ve been learning about it being in homes and water during class and I was surprised because I always thought it was just in our pencils. Choosing this topic was meant for me to actually learn something instead of reciting back things I had already learned or already knew previously. And I did learn some new things.

Throughout the duration of the time we worked on the project, I tried to make sure every checkpoint was submitted on time and I wanted to make sure we had relevant information.

I think I tried to have more than just a video for our project when we first started recording and I just scratched that whole idea because the original video was worse than this one. Something I could’ve done better would be to edit and submit the video myself.

The most meaningful part of creating the PSA was learning new things, more than it being in the water and our homes, more than babies and young children being the most at risk of lead poisoning. I learned many organizations that help fight causes like this, I learned plants absorb lead through their soil, and lead can remain in dust indefinitely.

Toxic City Infographic

What stood out to me was how this isn't seen as much of a problem in Philadelphia even though it's been around for decades, and people really aren't getting penalized for renting out homes that are riddled with lead paint. I was wondering why other cities are actually doing things to prevent this from happening altogether instead of what we're doing and waiting to search a home that has "too much lead" in it.

Artist Statement

Posted by Jada Reynolds in Art 1 · Hertz · d1 on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 1:25 pm

For my quarter 4 benchmark, I chose to model my work after the artist I chose, Kathleen Dunphy. She does a lot of watercolor paintings and I based my artwork off of hers. I created a vase with flowers and a dark background with a dark blue table/floor. The flowers were pink, magenta, and burgundy. I used simple, different sized paintbrushes and a canvas that is used for watercolor. The larger ones were used for filling in a lot of space quickly while the smaller ones were used for getting in tiny spaces a little more precisely. I drew a sketch first and then I started working with trying to mix up a desirable green that would work for the stems. I then used red and a mix of a few other colors to get a pink, magenta, and burgundy. I don’t specifically remember the colors I used for it but I got a good outcome. I don’t normally use watercolor for my artwork, and I wanted to try something new and I liked the outcome. Something I wish I did differently was me using the paint like it was acrylic rather than watercolor. With watercolor paint, you can use the already dried paint on the paper to get a certain effect or use more color. I’m used to acrylic paint because I’ve been using it since last year and I like deep colors rather than semi transparent colors so I wasn’t used to using it.

For my final Q4 project, I chose image editing. I did photoshop in the past so I knew a little bit of what I was doing during the project. I like dogs a lot but I don’t have any, and my favorite dogs are german shepherds and golden retrievers which are adorable as puppies. I wanted to create a mix of those dogs so I fused both of them together, putting the german shepherd’s head on the golden retriever’s body.

I used the lasso to cut off the german shepherds head and placed it on the golden retrievers body. I also used the cloning tool to put certain spots of color from the original german shepherd on the golden retriever and it made the dog look more realistic. I also used this tool for the grass so it wouldn’t look like the dogs head was just sitting there. I used the blur tool to blend the fur. The sponge tool helped to yellow certain areas so it could be a better match for the fur of the golden retriever. The smudge tool was even better than the blur tool even at a lower opacity. It helped to blend the fur faster and more efficiently for me.

Limited Palette

My art piece is a butterfly gracefully sitting on a flower. I tried to make the color scheme more on the dark side but I did end up using some brighter colors to color the flower. I used a dark blue and purple to paint the butterfly, while I used pink, red, green, and yellow for the flower. My art has some similarities to my previous work because this is a limited palette painting. The painting was supposed to come out elegant but once I added paint, it kind of ruined any good parts about it all.

In my last limited palette painting I tried to paint over any stray marks with white and it helped to bring out the other colors of the painting which I did in this one. I also feel like I had hard lines to paint over and I wanted everything to come out straight and smooth but I didn’t.

I used big, wide, brushes to fill in large gaps of space, and I used thin, smaller brushes for outlining and filling in smaller lines of space. I had to dump my water out a lot because if I didn’t, the water would’ve mixed in with my new colors and I didn’t want that.

Something I would definitely change about this is the object I would paint on. I feel like with what I used, it was too textured and I feel like I should’ve just used wood so it would look cleaner and better. I also think overall, I should just stop doing limited palette in general and do something that doesn’t require good painting skills.

My Q1 Artist Statment 2017

Posted by Jada Reynolds in Art 1 · Hertz · d1 on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 11:52 pm

I based my artwork off the show Rick and Morty so I can create a depiction of it from my point of view. I enjoy watching the show and it would make sense for me to draw about something I dislike. I used a small amount of materials: colored pencils to color in most of my picture, white tempera paint to lighten up any colors I felt were too dark, and a black sharpie to even out the darkness of the lines. I think this work has no correlation to my previous work except for the fact that t includes things that I like. In freshman year, I has drawn a picture of a room full of food and I love food so much. I had never drawn pictures of people before so that was something new for me. I think this picture was a fail. I don’t like the outcome of it very much because it could’ve been way better. I wish the pencil lines hadn’t smeared because it would look way cleaner I also wish I got a thinner sharpie because those lines are very thick and I wish I took more time trying to get straighter lines. Rick’s eye is a little bit off, he looks like a Simpson. His hand is very small and so is his portal gun. My inspiration comes from the love of this show and the animators and artist(s) who drew him. I’m most proud of the attempt. I want to say I tried my best but if I did, it would have been better. I would spend less time on paint testing and more time on actually drawing and painting because I didn’t even end up using any other paint color but white.

My Q3 Art Project: Value, Line, and Texture

Posted by Jada Reynolds in Art 2 · Hertz · b1 on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 9:35 am
I created this project because when I looked at the other people before me who completed this project they’re outcome turned out very nicely. My vision from the work was a little bit different than how I wanted it to be but I think it’s okay. I think my work communicates to the viewer a happy go lucky kitten that’s playing with a ball. I don’t think my current work relates to my previous work other than the fact that I use line, value, and texture in all of my art pieces. I don’t have the link to my inspiration but I know I just wanted to draw a cute animal. My work reflects the world I live in because I like to be around nice, happy things and the cat in my picture is happy. Make sure that when you try to shade you do the darkest where the sun doesn’t hit and lightest to no shade where it does. I didn’t learn a new technique when doing this project.

When doing this project I learned a lot of things in the process. I learned my vision for my work wasn’t that far off but I wanted my shading to be a lot better. I achieved most of what I wanted despite messing up some of it. I think most of the people who see my painting will just see a rose. My rose reflects things in my daily life because it’s a flower and flowers are in nature. I did a rough draft of my picture first, I created a rough draft and a final copy on canvas and I painted it. My work fits in with contemporary art because Morris’ painting “Fruit in the blue bowl” he used a lot of the same colors that I used like red blue and purple. We both also created simple pictures. I think by working on this project I made comparisons with the modern day artwork and that I have really high expectations for myself when I paint/draw/etc.

Q1 | Color Wheel | Blog Post

Posted by Jada Reynolds in Art 2 · Hertz · b1 on Monday, October 31, 2016 at 10:17 am

I created a generic color wheel. My overall vision for this work didn’t come out the way I expected it to come out though. It looks okay but I feel like I could have done so much better. I also think the people who look at it will just see it as another color wheel and not something extraordinary. I thought it would’ve looked nice if I made the primary colors have triangles in it.

My current work relates to my previous work because I used colors in all my other artwork and I used all of these colors in those as well. My work also relates to historic work because they probably only used primary colors and had to make other colors to get the work they wanted to achieve. I created this work because I thought it would look nice. I think what ruined my work was going over the colors over and over again. That’s why it looks messy.

I can't live without food. It's one of the best things in the world. There's food on tables and shelves and there's even a picture on the wall of more food. I like cookies because they are nice. Food is simple therefore this will be simple. I love food.

My whole life revolves around sneakers. I love them with a passion. They are all bright but this one will truly be lit. As in lit like super flames. Sneakers like the one that we’re working on deserve to be just light. That’s what they are beautiful and bright like stars. I want to work at a job that involves sneakers i’d would be perfect there.

- The art I had drawn was to tell people not to abuse others.
- People getting brutally injured inspired me to draw the picture.
- I chose the location because it's out in the open where anyone can see it.
- This project didn't change my perception of art at all.
- I think this project will allow me to try to see things from another perspective instead of just my own.

Social Media Survival guide

Posted by Jada Reynolds in TECH 1 - Hertz - e1 on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 11:54 am

Social-Media survival guide

If you search my name, you will not see me online. I will be telling you about how to survive on social media. I do not appear on social media, therefore people cannot perceive me. I guess you can say, I do not exist. I don’t post anything online. I don’t recommend sharing things online. There are pros and cons to sharing online.

Pros:

  • You might have something funny and want to send it to someone else

  • You could go viral (in a good way)

Cons:

  • What you send might be inappropriate and they could send it to a million different people and then everyone could see it. You would be publically humiliated.

  • It could go viral (in a bad way)

Lack of control, permanence, and immediacy have a large impact on our lives. Permanence is in the internet. Once you post something, anyone could repost immediately, then you have no control over what goes on with the post. That’s the lack of control on the internet and the immediacy.

My thoughts on social media background checks for people applying to jobs is it doesn’t make sense to me. Whatever you do in your free time has nothing to do with what you do at work. So what you can smell like cigarettes or weed. Or you’re an  alcoholic, you do those things on you’re free time to have fun or release stress. If you didn’t want to lose your job for doing drugs or drinking, you wouldn’t apply for the job in the first place.

I am now going to discuss “free speech”. What is this free speech that you ask? It’s the right to speak your mind and give you 2 cents on what you think about whatever. But people take this “free speech” thing too far. When people start degrading people for how they look or how they speak is when it’s not free speech. After that point it’s just the hatred of yourself and not the person you make feel bad. Certain things are protected like telling someone to kill themselves. That gives you serious consequences. You go to jail and will get charged for I think murder. But things like racism, segregation, and bullying doesn’t seem to get noticed.

An internet troll is someone who just hates on people for no reason at all. They start arguments under videos on youtube just to watch the arguments for their enjoyment. They say things like under random videos saying “Justin Bieber is soooo much better than 1D.” I just sit and wonder why… just why would you do something like that. Their goals are to see people angry and argue so they can be happy because deep down inside, they are dead. We can stop trolling by not feeding into their nonsense. They are like a fire-if you stop feeding them air, they’ll die.

Let’s switch gears for a moment. Many people post anonymously online. Let’s see the Pros and Cons of this situation:

Pros:

  • You post things that you don't think twice about, start a debate but they don't really know who you are so they can’t really kill you for saying something that you weren't thinking about the consequences for.

  • People don’t really know who you are, or what you look like, they just like your content.

Cons:

  • You might post something really inspirational, people like it, you could get famous, but nobody knows who you are so you can’t take the credit. Soon everyone else will be posting or saying it so much where it doesn’t matter.

Tips to survive social media:

  • Don’t post any inappropriate content that could ruin your future

  • Don’t be an internet troll

  • Be positive
