Samantha Wise - Capstone

What’s a stereotype? A stereotype is clearly defined as “a perceived notion about someone, especially about a group of people”. Teenage life isn’t easy. Being gay isn’t easier. Many gay people growing up and as an adult can face many acts of discrimination and stereotypical interactions with others. Throughout this project will be many voices on stereotypes and experiences with being stereotyped and discriminated within the system. Hopefully, this project will help people everywhere understand more about what stereotyping is and how it is used everywhere. Samantha and I have created a movie, nonetheless, created by 2 female lesbians in an interracial relationship, focusing on stereotypes, what the view of stereotypes are considered at SLA@Beeber, and the experiences Samantha had in the work-field. We share our stories to educate the world on stereotyping and just because we only have 2 stories to broadcast, does not mean that hundreds of people all over the world aren’t. It’s an epidemic that needs to be controlled and stopped. Imagine if it were you getting stereotyped out of a job, or school when you needed it the most.

Our goal in creating this Capstone was to educate the minds of children, adults, mothers and fathers, teachers, etc all over this country, and hopefully, the world, to become more open-minded and not to just judge people on what they look like from the first glance. If we all came together and got to know one another before stereotyping, the world could actually become a better place. Not all black people steal. Not all white people hate black people. Not all Muslims are terrorists. Not all Greeks eat baklava. Not all Asians get straight A’s. Stop the stereotyping.

It Flows

I created this piece of work for my girlfriend. Her favorite color is blue so I figured since I did the rest of my work for people special to me I should make one for her too. She loves it. My work actually came out way better than I suspected it to. I did it a little sloppy but a messy artist is a dedicated one! I wanted to have that galaxy effect at first but I felt like that was a little to complicated for me to do in such a short amount of time so I had just decided to go with a wavy kind of flowy background.
I think it says “water” or “ocean”. It’s such a pretty blue it might even make you a little nostalgic. Looking at it for a long period of time will allow you to see how the paint flows into each other, you may just be able to identify the technique I used to achieve that flow. I think I achieved another level of experience when working with these paints and techniques. It’s very different from what I’ve done in the past which is what my goal was, to do something different.

There's a painting by David Munroe called “fade Into You”
. His painting is similar to mine when it comes to the style of having two or more colors fading into one another without lines.

First I chose 3 colors; blue, white and black. I used those colors to create a mixing guide that would allow me to make several colors out of the 3. After doing that I was able to save the colors I made. I initially chose three other colors that was made from the mixing guide, I don't want to spoil them so I won't say which ones but when starting my work I took heed to the kind of brushes that i decided to use and started from there. Using a lighter color mix at the top and a more darker one at the bottom.
It doesn’t have that kind of impact on my life. It’s just something that was fun to do, you know? I can say that I’ve created a painting like that and am able to show it to my friends and family. I personally don’t believe that it will have any kind of impact or could for that matter.

For the painting that I’ve created you need to have a medium sized brush and have a straight hand. The curves are very noticeable so you must try your best to keep your lines straight. You don't want you brush to be too wet because then your paint will have been too watery and wet and would require you to apply more than one coat to have your painting bold with the color of your choice. For this painting i chose to go horizontally rather than vertical so it will look like it would go on forever if it could. Like I have always said, I compromise every time I do a new piece. I come up with an idea of how i want it to look and then I shoot.
Overall as you can see the work I produce is a reflection of my thought process when it comes to doing new creative things. I'm a risk taker, i feel as though when I think too hard it doesn't come out the way I picture it in my head.

I Love The View : Art Project Q2

IMG_0190
I'm The reason I wrote I created this has something to do with difference and dedication. I did this because i wanted to do something that will remind me of someone else and have it remind them of me. Plus I’ve never worked with clay before so it’s a new experience that i can say i now have.
It turned out great and exactly how i pictured when i changed my idea to what it is now. I was really hoping to make some realistic and relatable but also dark and with a touch of emotion.
I feel like if the person understands what it symbolizes then they will get the message of a dark love. Just by looking the viewer may see a nice soft picture of exactly what it is, a mountain and a tree. I think I Achieved my initial goal of creating 3 pieces.
My Past work relates to my current due to my imagination not changing only my inspirations Have. As an artist I try to make my work more divers to attract a different crowd and a different emotion .
Richard orlinski had created this still life sculptured piece that is almost like mine except it is of an animal meanwhile mine is of an object. It seems to me that it may also have been made of clay.

For my piece, First I Had to make the decision of using clay. At a few failed attempts i initially used a glove, then used news paper and glue to form a mold around my hand, then let it dry. Since i got impatient i didn’t let it dry fully and used tape to do the mold but forgot that i needed to take my hand out of the mold. So i cut a slit down the middle took my hand out and was left with this deformed hand mold. I compromised and just used clay to give it its current form. It took a lot of clay and water to make it hard and think like a real hand. After that was done, I got a plank and hammered two nails into it to hold the hand up in place and then took clay and covered the nails so it was like they were never there. After that i covered the plank in clay and painted it making a river, it continuously cracked but i kept going over it until it got tired of me and decided not to crack anymore. I Painted all of it and decided i needed a tree which i alo made out of clay and painted. There was no inspiration for this piece i improvised the whole thing because i wanted it to truly be original which is probably why i ran into so many mistakes.
I put a piece of me into the piece. My mom is deaf and the mountain is in the shape of the sign “i love you” which was a big piece of the whole thing.
It would definitely bring awareness and for those who can relate to it will feel inspired and honored to be noticed. I think it also just says “i love you” to everyone that see it’s because it is a strong word and sign for those who speak the language.
I feel like by having a certain technique it makes the piece original and carefully thought out. I don’t think that an artist should have a certain technique though because it puts a limit on his experience.
A technique i learned was to compromise, because it won't turn out how you think it will so whats plan B?
Overall i feel like this artwork is just a chunk of me now and me in the future, hopefully my skills just continue to get better and my still life will be even more complex to the point where maybe i wouldn't be able to recreate it even myself. That is my goal, to have done something so well that there's absolutely no chance of me creating that piece.

"I'm A Dreamer" Color Wheel

I have created this work because I liked the idea of having a range of colors flowing from an object, it’s a very creative and interesting thing to draw and create.
My overall vision of my work seems to be very inspiring. I got a lot of compliments on what i did and it made me more confident in what I did. I had the picture in my mind and it came out almost exactly the way i expected it to mainly because of the object i used as my centerpiece. The paint’s that we used weren’t exactly what I imagined but it got the job done and brought my vision to life.
I expect my audience to appreciate the effort that i put into my artwork and to complement it on what it is. I would love constructive feedback because you can never improve too much.
I would say that my current work is just as good and my previous work, it just so happens that this one was just a different type of piece. I feel like it’s good to broaden my experience in the “artplace”. It relates in a way simply because it comes from the same place. Everytime I do a new piece it comes from me.
Current contemporary art and the work i have don are probably on two whole different scales in my opinion. Looking at contemporary art it make mine look like a child’s sketch. But that makes me better because I know my inspiration and as long as i keep doing what I have been my work will continue to get better over time.
History of art practice is exactly what we are bringing out every time we do a new piece of art. Using this “color wheel” method it brings about where our colors come from and how we use them in different ways that make them original. Even though it’s the same colors it’s a different piece.
I think my work would stand out in a group exhibition because of how bright my colors and and the technique i used.
My inspiration was tumblr. I love the photography that pops up when you google “Tumblr” it's a reflection of how i see everything. I always use that as my inspiration for my art. But i think think that if i used something else as my inspiration my work would be completely different.
If tumblr artists relates to “other artists” then i have been influenced by their style and use of color and fading tints.
A certain technique isn’t crucial but you must have an idea of what you want your work to look like in the long run so before you start you want to have a game plan and an idea of what you want your work to look like so if you follow those steps your work will come out as planned.
A new technique i have learned is the color wheel itself, i learned how to make tints and it reminded me of what my colors are and how to use them . I’ve never done a color wheel before so it gave me some insight on what colors i could use and how i could use them.
Overall I feel as though my art piece was meaningful to me in the best way possible, it brings out the artist in me and it shows my vision and love for owls. I think that choosing to do my piece this way really compliments my ideas and the requirements for the project itself. I think the time i spent on doing this work shows graciously and I’m very proud to show my work off to those who have not seen it yet, as well as all my other pieces i have done in the past.

Tree Of Life

Posted by Samantha Wise in ART ADV - Hertz - b2 on Friday, February 6, 2015 at 7:33 am

  1. Project Description
For my project I’m doing a tree of life on a canvas. It will be a sunset setting and the tree will be filled with leaves on one side and on the other side will be dead with no leaves while birds are flying away.

  1. Reasons for Selecting Topic
I selected this because there are so many things going on in my life that I appreciate and then its somethings that I’m not so grateful for and I want to show that with this tree of life without me having to explain.

  2. Knowledge or Experience of Topic
I knew about the tree of life for a while now I just didn’t decide to do it then because I didn’t know if I was capable of pulling it off, but now since I did my first project I have more confidence

  1. New Learning
I will have to acquire some see and draw skills ( drawing what I see in my head) because I know that sometimes I think about how I want it to come out but not all the time it comes out that way. I need to have skills with pastels and shading because with this i’m gonna need a lot of shading

  1. Preliminary Research Results
I did some research with watching youtube videos , I found out that In need pastels , and a black marker in order to do my tree of life.

  2. Main Project Tasks
My main projects tasks is to make sure I’m blending right, I Will on a rough draft of the drawing on a small piece of paper and then i will see which type of canvas is best to use for my drawing. After that I will start with my base which is the blending of the pastels to make my sunset, after thats done i will draw my tree and birds.

  3. Potential Challenges
I think i might have some challenges with drawing my tree and birds and being able to fit it on my canvas

  4. What will your project end result be?
My end result will be having experience working with pastels and a canvas. I Know my project will be a success because I know that I have done everything step by step  , good research and have practiced.

  1. Student  Acknowledgement

I acknowledge that I am responsible for completing my project on time. I also agree to submit revisions to my project proposal as required. I understand that I am responsible for tracking my own progress and asking for assistance from my teacher and/or peers when I need it.

Shaded Comic Collage Of Me

Posted by Samantha Wise in ART ADV - Hertz - b2 on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 7:52 am
This is just one picture I did to see how my collage would turn out. Basically it will consist of a lot of shading and tracing like i did in this photo but it will take a while because I'm gonna use a series of photos. i'm thinking about leaving it in black n white but then again maybe some color will suffice my skin tone. The materials I'm using is something like stencil paper , and a pencil using it to trace and shade.

Quarter 1 Project : Artist Statement

CYMERA_20141205_084041
CYMERA_20141205_084041

As an aspiring artist I want to create artwork that people can look at and say “ Wow, She Worked Hard On That”. Some people think that they have to have experience , or know how to draw in order to create beautiful artwork. But I create art to show them that you don’t have to know how to make art to make art, all you need is inspiration and imagination.

In order to come up with an idea for my next piece of art I do some self searching and a little bit of inspiration searching as well. Most of my art pieces consists of my favorite colors or something that I think represents me and the community I live in. Materials come after I make my theme decision, depending on how it looks that's how I decide if it’ll look better painted or drawn. Most of the time I would decide to do something big that everyone will be able to see, and other times I would just use a simple canvas.

The picture that is posted above is my current work, nothing special. Like I said it just consisted of my favorite colors and I made it big enough for everyone to see. I used geometry as my inspiration, just because working with shapes and knowing how to incorporate different shades of one color is something that I've wanted to try. None of my past work is in relation to this one.
