Reflection: From doing this project I was able to learn a lot about the human brain and the different parts of the brain. Since our project was about Schizophrenia, we mainly focused on this. The main parts of the brain affected by Schizophrenia are in the frontal lobe, which is also where the most gray matter is lost from Schizophrenia. It also has a big impact on neurotransmitters.

Q3 Benchmark Drug Addiction on the Brain

Posted by Ivana Gutierrez in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at 11:58 pm

Reflection: For this benchmark project my group chose to do Drug Addiction and how it affects the human brain. I learn that drugs trigger on your reward system and that is why people can get addicted. Drugs harm the Limbic System, the brain stem, and the Cerebral Cortex. I found this topic interesting to research because I learned something new. Also there many ways that can help stop drug addiction.

Schizophrenia

Posted by Tyrone Grant in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at 11:56 pm

What I've learned through this project is what schizophrenia is, how it works, and how it affects the body. I was pretty surprised by the fact that no one really knows what causes schizophrenia and that there's no cure for it. Although the disorder itself is pretty rare, I still think that the government should take priority by funding organizations to try and find a cure for such a depressing disorder. Another thing that I learned was how it actually affects the brain.

Through this project I learned a lot about schizophrenia that I hadn't known before. For example I always used to think that people with schizophrenia were insane and belonged in a mental asylum. I didn't really know why I thought this, but when I thought about it I found that it was how the disease was portrayed in media that led me to believe this. I think that other people like me need to understand that schizophrenia is a fairly common disease and does not cause you to become mentally inept, it just makes life a little more difficult for the people who have it and we should do our best to help them in any way that we can. After having completed this project I am wondering if they will ever find a cure for schizophrenia; as it is now there is only treatments that help to partially subdue its affects on the homeostasis of the body.

Epilepsy

I learned that a lot of times when you are diagnosed with epilepsy it is because of at least two  unprovoked seizures. Seizures directly mess with our memories but messing up the hippocampus. One of the main wanderings I have is how they can diagnose you with epilepsy through blood tests. How does with give you a low sperm count.

Alzheimer's Disease

Posted by Saraa Fadl in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at 10:54 pm

This project was to help us understand the importance of the structure and function of the nervous system. In my group, we studied Alzheimer's Disease. This disease involved the brain. We learned that over time enzymes and proteins can stop functioning which can lead to major problems like loss of memory, lack of ability to do certain tasks, such as eating, speaking, or showering. This disease may be genetic but there are other factors that scientists are trying to come up with to try and find a cure. We decided on this disease because we knew that this is a very common disease in this country and one of the top causes of American deaths. It also doesn't have a cure which we thought was interesting.

For our Benchmark 3 project, my group and I chose to research Alzheimer's Disease. It is a disease that can make you forget, there are many symptoms of this disease. We also did a model made out of Play-doh which shows the good brain and the brain with the disease. You will find more information on this disease on our google slide.

Quarter 3: Human Anatomy Benchmark The Nervous System Project (2017-2018)

Posted by Michael Tran in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at 10:49 pm

The purpose of this benchmark is for students to demonstrate their understanding of the Nervous System. In groups of 4, you must pick a topic pertaining to the nervous system. Your project is two part: a physical model of the nervous system showing how the topic you chose affects the system and an informative presentation that can be in the form of: poster, website, video, powerpoint, prezi. Your project must describe the types of cells, tissues, and organs that make up the organ system. Your group must focus on how the organ system helps the human body maintain homeostasis by analyzing the chemical and biological changes that occur. Investigate how the topic affects the body’s ability to maintain homeostasis. What must be done in order to get the body back to homeostasis, if someone is a victim of the disease (i.e. medical treatments and therapy available). You must also research professions and organizations that study or manage the topic you are investigating, in order to create a social awareness of the topic.

Overall, this project was very fun. I learned a lot about human anatomy and how Alzheimer's disease effects the physiology of the human mind. If I were to redo this project, I would procrastinate less.

As we completed this project I learned a lot more about Alzheimer's Disease that I didn't know before. I was aware of it, but I treated it like how one would treat every other disease. Alzheimer's taught me the importance of brain diseases and why it is imperative that we find a permanent solution so that the millions of people affected won't have to live this way. I learned how it doesn't just affect the nervous system but it affects the way you eat and walk which are the day to day necessities. I hope that one day this disease will be cured and so far scientists are trying their best to make that happen.
