Nicholas Anderson's Capstone

Posted by Nicholas Anderson in Capstone on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 11:54 pm

For my senior capstone I decided to create and release my debut music project. I created an EP entitled “DI4A The Prologue” (Did It For Annaliza). I’ve been inconsistently making music for the last 4 years. Since July I’ve been working harder and beginning to obtain consistency with results. My mother committed suicide on thanksgiving morning freshman year and I’ve been torn ever since. Throughout all the wins and losses I took throughout my life losing my mother is without a doubt the biggest one. When she died everybody looked at me (a 13 year old boy) to keep everything together. Long story short everything I do is for my mom which is why I decided to dedicate this series to her. The idea is I’m telling my story in a book setup, thus “The Prologue” in the title. A prologue is basically a warm up to the first chapter (DI4A Chapter 1) which I’ll be releasing in November. My original idea was to create a documentary on this subject but instead I decided to do an autobiography. After I got the autobiography idea I accumulated the idea of writing a short story book. I researched book setups on powerful stories. In other words I looked up how it was structured as in Prologue, Chapter buildups and I went in and out of Background information etc…. I attained inquiry from myself and my older sister honestly. We sat at the table countless nights in the studio while I was writing out the EP investigating each others hearts and memories looking for different perspective routes that would draw in the listeners as well as create an effective mode of storytelling while getting the messages across. Inquiry was also used while listening to the greatest storytelling artists looking for the methods they use. The collaboration process was probably the easiest part of it all. I collaborated with my studio engineer, my producers, other artists (KHI included). The presentation aspect for me consisted of releasing the project on a selected date & time as well as promoting and uploading the project to a few major music websites. The reflection is self explanatory I wrote about things I’ve done in the past and where it got me or what it did for me. I sat and thought about the last 4 years of my life and what it did to me and what I hope it’s leading me too and what I can gain from it. I learned throughout this whole process that I can really touch people and this gift I have in expressing myself over beats is 1 of 1. I’ve learned that it’s a formula for success in this business and right now I’m on track to get where I’ve dreamed of being in the next 4 to 5 years and even sooner if I handle my business. I wouldn’t change anything, I would actually add to what I’ve done. If I could go back I would have made time to get my visuals finished so that people could visualize the story better.

Anthony & Jame Capstone

Posted by Anthony Bowden in Capstone on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 10:32 pm

Since we are the first class to graduate we thought it would nice to honor, and show appreciation to our senior class. We started this school all of the hard work that we put in made this school into what it is now. My partner Jame and I wanted our capstone to be original, and different at the same time. Most importantly we wanted to display our creativity, that is why for our capstone we chose to build it. We did start our project later than we expected because we couldn’t come up with a design concept that we could stick with. While working on our capstone, we spent most of our time working on this during our engineering class, and after school. Considering that we started late we stayed after school longer, that way we could focus. So our process for this project was simple, physically making it was the hard part. This isn’t the first project that my partner, and I have worked on together, prior to this we both have experience. The first steps in building our capstone consisted of us building a base. Wood was the best material to use as a sturdy base. So before we could cut or do anything else we had to take measurements first, because we wanted our capstone to be a reasonable size, secondly because we needed all the pieces of the base to be proportional, and fit evenly. Once all the pieces of the base were measured, then next step was to cut. Cutting was easy since we only had to make three cuts. Now that everything was cut we nailed all the pieces together. The hardest part was next which was painting, because it was so time consuming. We coated our base with two layers of blue paint that way it would give it a smooth look, and feel. We had to pay very close attention to details because when we assembled our pieces we lined them up evenly that it would be straight. Once this was done we were pretty much finished for the most part. We plan to have the all the seniors sign our piece that we can be remembered, and display our piece.

Gianna Flego Capstone

Posted by Gianna Flego in Capstone on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 4:38 pm

For my senior capstone, Jordan Williams and I decided to pair up and collaborate on something we both have a passion for; sports. Since our school has incorporated so many different sports teams over the past four years, we feel sa though sports should be something we honor more broadly this year. We wanted to incorporate all of the student athletes and appreciate them more for our final year, here at SLA. We figured that to show appreciation to our athletes and coaches, we should create a sports ceremony in honor of them. The process for our sports ceremony has came a very long way. In the beginning, in September, we fully planned on creating a full out banquet for the athletes. We first began by figuring out any kind of fundraising we could do, but in the end we got none of that done. We didn’t fundraise at all. In order for our banquet to be up to par, we would’ve needed to pay for tables, chairs, catering, refreshments, awards and invitations. By the time March came around, we obviously knew from there on out a banquet wasn’t going to be the way to go if we wanted to get our capstone done on time. Instead of rushing around to do a horrible job, we decided to make a ceremony. My partner and I have been on a very up and down journey to get our capstone figured out and finalized. Our final product is going to be SLA@Beeber’s first sports ceremony. Our ceremony will be held on June 2nd at 4 o’clock in the Beeber auditorium. And, Jordan and I will be hosting this event. I learned everything from time management, organization, patience, etc. My capstone story is really simple but we came along way from where we begun. I feel like this process has made me mature because we did a lot on our own and didn’t have much guidance throughout. We wanted to take matters into our own hands and I feel like that is the best decision we made through everything.

Bibliography:

National, Hazeltine. "Making Your High School Sports Banquet Memorable." Hazeltine National Golf Club. N.p., 8 July 2013 . Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

This article was written by Hazeltine National, a professional event decorator. This article was mostly about how to decorate your party area. An event such as this requires a lot of thought and coordination. National went through step by step on what to do and how to do it. Some steps she included was making it memorable with props, color coordination with school colors, honoring students accomplishments, table and seating arrangements, etc. This is super helpful to us because it gives us a basis on how to start our set up. It allows us to picture the decor we are most looking for and where to start that from.

Brennan , Cheri . "Creating and Designing a Sports Banquet Theme." Ezinearticles.com . N.p., 30 Aug. 2009 . Web. 4 Apr. 2017 .

This article was written by Cheri Brennan and it goes into great detail on what we need to create for part of the decor at our banquet. Sports banquets are suppose to be formal, since it is an honorable event. Being said that, formality is what we are going to aim for. She explains that lighting, backgrounds (for pictures), a podium, eating materials (napkins, plates, silverware), etc, are all important factors in creating a “formal” look. Knowing how to create a formal look is going to help us a lot in the long run because that is what we really want to come out of this. We want to create something so perfect that it will be memorable. Coming in with a very coordinated event will be something no one will forget.

Writer, Leaf Group. "Sports Banquet Invitation Wording Ideas." Entertainment Guide | Local.com. Local.com, 26 June 2011. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

Invitations are one of the most important things to include when creating any kind of event. Its most important when creating a formal event like a sports banquet. Since our event is honoring and congratulating athletes, that needs to be really broad on our invitations. They have to be particular and noticeable. The article explains what needs to be on the invitations since our event is specific. It tells us to include; location, attire, who is being honored and what the official agenda is. This really benefits us because creating the invitation is the number one thing to start with, after finding all of the general information about our event. The invitation attracts our invitees.

Berkowitz , Kenny . "Better Banquets." Better Banquets. N.p., 29 Jan. 2015 . Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

This article is about other schools and what they do to keep their banquets interesting. Sometimes, events such as this one can be really drawn out and people usually leave when it isn’t even over yet. For us, that is not our goal at all. We want to make it as involved and fun as possible. This article gave us different ideas to keep it interesting. It explains that involving as many students as possible is the best idea because everyone is being honored (which parents want, and more people will come). It also gave us the idea of selecting a few people, mostly seniors, to give a speech about their time at SLA and how their sport is important to them. We also want to include as many lower classmen as possible.

"Team Awards Dinner Ideas To Celebrate The End Of the Season." To Celebrate The End Of the Season. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

This article doesn’t have a main author, but it talks a lot about the food part of any sports banquet, or any party at all. In the article, it is suggested that before we start doing any catering planning, to have a all around survey on what people like. By having people take a survey, a more diverse list can be created, offering many. They give us ideas on what kind of food set up we can use, and we find it most helpful using a buffet set up. A buffet will allow our guests to have a little bit of a choice. Although this article mainly focuses on food options, it benefits us because now we have an easier way of figuring out an easy food plan.

Blankenburg, Eric. "Ideas for an Athletic Banquet." EHow. Leaf Group, 24 Jan. 2010. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

This article goes over a couple of important things; decorations, foods, awards, activities, gifts, etc. We find this article most helpful when the author focuses in on awards. As a pair, we haven’t quite figured out what kind of articles we are offering yet. But, this article explains that the most important one to hand out to each sport team is “MVP.” This can open up a variety of awards that we could use such as “most improved” “most team spirit” “all around athletic” and many more. The article tells us that it is important to recognize and all and not leave anybody out, especially if they are there. As we have said before, we want this to be as memorable as possible considering these are the first ever athletes at SLA and this is the first capstone.

Leyitha Achoute's Capstone.

Posted by Leyitha Achoute in Capstone on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 1:35 pm

The values and what I envisioned for my capstone was similar to what I have put in place for the school club I founded; African Root Connection. My capstone presentation is the highlights and objectives of that school club for this year. The reason behind creating this school club is centered around my interest in African studies and I wanted to provide a space for Black students like myself to learn together about our roots.

Moesha Grant's Capstone

Women Against Abuse (1)
For my senior capstone, I decided I wanted to reflect on something I’ve struggled with my whole life to close my senior year. I witnessed domestic violence in my home since I was a young child and it often hindered my growth as a person. I wanted to help somebody like me, which is a child who has to deal with constant violence and fear in their home. I found an organization called Women Against Abuse in Philadelphia. I raised a $300 first for this organization and brought toiletries for them. I fundraised through selling Fried Oreos and Brownies at least three times a week since the end of February. I also created a Go Fund Me Page that I shared with the faculty and students of Science Leadership Academy at Dimner Beeber and my community. I posted this page on Facebook and even got my peers and family to repost it. I reached a goal of $250 on Go Fund Me and the rest of the money for the $300 came from my bake sales. I decided to give a financial gift to Women Against Abuse because I didn’t grow up with much money to fund my education or my needs while witnessing domestic violence in my home. My senior project helped me reflect as an SLA Student and citizen by I realized my purpose on this earth is to help someone else and not keep my struggles hidden. In order to help someone, you must share your pain and show them how you overcame it!

Senior Capstone

Administrator. "The Facts on Domestic Abuse." The Facts on Domestic Abuse. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://www.dvcpartners.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=48 &itemid=58>.

This source gave statistical information about domestic abuse against women in America. I took some of this information and included this in my brochure. I found this source useful because I wanted to have some statistics on domestic violence against women in America. Most brochures I’ve read that make people aware about an issue give statistical information. One limitation to this source is these statistics were taken in 2011. I would have preferred something more recent.

Cook, Divas Can. "About." Divas Can Cook. N.p., 16 Apr. 2012. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://divascancook.com/how-to-make-cake-pops-easy-best/>.

This source provides information about how to make cake pops. This source is helping me by I’m learning how to make one of the items I’m selling to fundraise for my capstone. I found this source useful because it’s helping me learn how to create cake pops in four easy steps. Also, this source shows how affordable making cake pops are, which is helpful because they won’t cost me too much to make them and sell them. I can gain great profit from selling cake pops for my capstone. One limitation of this source is it didn’t show where I can purchase the chocolate I need for the cake pops.

Domestic Violence Victim. 2013. Kool News. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://www.koolnews.gr/bookcinematv/theatro-dromoy-parastaseis-me-stoho-tin-exaleipsi-vias-enantia-ton-gynaikon>.

This source was a picture I got from online to put in my brochure. This source added some intense imagery to my brochure helping me portray my message to my community. I think my brochure looks more appealing with this picture. This image gave my brochure more of a personal touch. The only limitation to this source is I don’t know what country this picture comes from, but it’s not from America because the website is in another language.

"Food Fundraisers - Profitable Fundraising Ideas." Rewarding Fundraising Ideas. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://www.rewarding-fundraising-ideas.com/food-fundraisers.html>.

This source provides me information on numerous fundraising ideas. The ideas presented in this source can help he get to the goal of my capstone faster, which is a gift of $300 to the Woman's Against Abuse. Different ideas for fundraising will help me keep my fundraising fun and profitable. I don’t want to continue to sell the same items to fundraise all the time because people won’t buy them. One limitation of this source is some of the ideas are too expensive.

"Help for Abused and Battered Women." Help for Abused and Battered Women: Protecting Yourself and Escaping from Domestic Violence. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Feb. 2017. <https://www.helpguide.org/articles/abuse/help-for-abused-and-battered-women.htm>.

This source topped off all my information in my brochure about the next steps in getting away from abusers. Also, it presented information on the dos and don’ts for forming an escape plan. Also, what to say and what not to say to someone getting abused, so they won’t over react. This source helped me realize the biggest mistake people make being friends of the victims of domestic violence is judging them or making them make instant decisions. I wanted to make sure this information was presented because it’s a common mistake made. The only limitation to this source is the source isn’t very recent.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. N.d. United Nations. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/bf/d4/e9/bfd4e98d0423a06554fb4958c760eab0.jpg >.

This source was another image I got to put in my brochure. It says stop domestic violence against women on a hand, which is the direct message I want to present in my brochure. I should have took picture myself, but I might take my own photography for my presentation. I found this source useful in supporting the information in my brochure.

"Statistics." Statistics. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://ncadv.org/learn-more/statistics>.

This source also, added to the statistical information surrounding domestic violence against women. I discovered the percentages of women that are based is very high and people don’t realize it. This information will give my brochure more purpose and add intensity to getting the message across that domestic violence is a serious issue in society that is constantly ignored. One limitation to this source is I’m not sure even this information is very recent or has some bias in it.

"Violence Against Women." Am I being abused? N.p., 30 Sept. 2015. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <https://www.womenshealth.gov/violence-against-women/am-i-being-abused/>.

This source provides me information on the signs of early domestic violence against women. This source helped me provide some of the information presented in my brochure. Also, the article discusses an unhealthy and healthy relationship. I used some this information to inform people that are unaware about domestic violence against women to make them aware. One limitation to this source is it doesn’t give information on what to do if you're the friend if someone being abused.

Women, New Hope for. "Abuser Tricks." New Hope for Women. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://www.newhopeforwomen.org/abuser-tricks>.

This source gave me information on the tricky character presented from abusers. Many people don’t notice an abuser is an actual abuser early until an incident happens. This source gives an inside to victims or people that want to know about the early signs of domestic abusers. This source helped me inform people in my brochure about to catch their abuser early. The only limitation to this source are some of the characteristics they listed of the early signs of an abuser are repeated in just different ways.

"Women Against Abuse." Help Me | Women Against Abuse. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://www.womenagainstabuse.org/get-help/help-me>.

This source gave me information on how I should go about the goal for my capstone. I’m giving $300 to the organization on this website. I’m also  getting hotline cards from this website for women to call if they want to get away from their abuser. I got information about what a women should do if she is trying to plan an escape from their abuser to put inside of my brochure. One limitation to this source is I still haven’t received hotline cards and it doesn't give much statistical information.
