André Thomas Capstone Project 2018
My project was initially inspired by the wish that a family member of mine would have lived to see what I would make of my life. Obviously, as they did not this will never happen, but in a sort of “dedicated to you” project, I wanted to summarize what I've been through in high school and where I would be headed. However, that concept proved to be difficult so I only finished 2 songs that relate to that, one is still in the production phase. The 2 I've posted here are simple cuts produced and written by myself that showcase the material I will continue to make. Although 2 songs are done I will eventually complete the other 3 included in my initial goal.
The major challenges here were creating the music itself, resources aside, making even decent music is tedious and can be very frustrating so I expected that making something worthy of presentation will be about 2 times more difficult. Thankfully, I had support in the form of some out-of-school help at the Village of Arts & Humanities, as well as some minor experience crafting my own work so it kept the creative process fun and exciting even when it was frustrating.

For my Capstone, I created my own webcomic on Line WebToon. I discovered WebToon in my sophomore year of high school, and I instantly fell in love with the comic website. As I transitioned into my junior year of high school I developed bad anxiety, yet having access WebToon really helped me. Reading the comics was calming, as though I had been transported to another word, and it helped me to recover. I’ve loved drawing from a young age, and of course wanted to make my own comic. Transitioning into my senior year, I knew that making a comic would be the best Capstone for me.
My comic launched on January 23rd, and I couldn’t happier with the result. I’ve received many nice comments and fan art from my subscribers, and I love watching them react to each new episode. However, the journey wasn’t easy. I had to work very hard to run the comic and to gain the almost 500 subscribers which I have now. My comic updated every Tuesday, meaning that I had to be drawing constantly in order to update it each week. One comic panel takes around an hour and a half to draw, and I drew eight of them per week. If I missed a day, I had to stay up late over the weekend to catch up. Yet I don’t regret a single late night of work. My comic is currently on a hiatus, but will continue after my graduation.
Aaliyah Ellerbee CapStone Project
Liyah Luxurious isn’t just a business it is a lifestyle a way of life. I started Liyah Luxurious so I can empower people not only women. Liyah Luxurious was created originally for accessories and turned Makeup artistry. Makeup is often seen as negative or a “cover-up” but young girls and women use makeup to become more confident or complete. Makeup is a source of art to express yourself and that allows you to channel different personalities and aesthetics. The goal I set for Liyah Luxurious was to build and brand throughout the year. I came out of my comfort zone with makeup looks, stood up for my brand & bragged about it. I started 2 new ventures in the course of branding myself and getting my name out there. The two new businesses are under Liyah Luxurious, Luxurious ilash which is a mink lash line, Logo’s by Liyah are logo for new businesses. Throughout the year I began to participate and put myself out there. Telling more people, networking with people and be apart of fashion shows, photoshoots and “makeup drives.” In the school with special events such as school parties and prom, I would give discounted prices. The deliverable I wanted to give by the end of my senior project was a t-shirt, business cards, and new clientele. This year I learned that everyone wants you to do good but not better than them. I so used to give recommendations when I wasn’t available for appointments but other makeup artist didn’t do the same.
Shawn Brooks' Capstone Inspirational Women of SLAB
Abstract:
This is my senior Capstone Project. For my Capstone Project, I decided to dedicate it to inspirational women in society who strive to make a difference by setting examples for others to follow. My original project was going to be a play about my life and its challenges. However, after a conversation with my mentor, Ms.Burrow-Stone, my plans for my Capstone changed. The women in my life, my mother and my maternal grandmother, have played such a significant role in my life that it is impossible to ignore it. As a matter of fact, pretty much women around the women have proved to be significant to society as they continue to try to push past discrimination and other limitations.
When I first started this project, I had to ask myself a question: Why women so important to me? Women are so important in my life because the role that my mother and late grandmother played. This then became the foundation for my project. I did some so research to find out what makes a woman inspirational and I was able to make connections between the research and the women in my life. As apart of my research, I conduct a survey in which I had members of the SLAB community about who was their most inspirational women in their life. I also include some research about women discrimination and gender inequality. All of this was done to show that why we need to appreciate women even more so.
