Q1 Sustainable Business and Resource Management Benchmark (2018-2019)

Posted by Eva Litke in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 2:05 pm

Essential Questions: 1. How do the earth systems affect each other? Each system interacts with every other system. For example, when our biosphere allows us to grow produce in one region, our atmosphere is forced to carry the produce from the farm area to the market, which uses fossil fuels. 2. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? Learning more about the systems used to provide us with the services/goods that we depend on each day will help us to be more careful. Recycling, reusing and preserving our resources will make a lasting change. My Reaction: This project has forced me to look deeper into the supermarket industry than I otherwise would have. I have learned just how much goes on from the moment produce is harvested to the moment we pick it up off the shelf in the store. We had to think hard about what would make our 3D model of a new store sustain the industry more-so than what our normal markets look like now. Natural disasters

Posted by Malayah Johnson in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 10:28 am

The essential question of this class is How do the earth systems affect each other? In my opinion the earth’s systems affect each other in a cause and effect way. The flow of the systems could get messed up if something happens to the previous system. For example in the Geosphere an earthquake could cause two tectonic plates collide with each other causing the land to shake. The second question is How can understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? If you understand environmental science aid your able to prepare for unpredictable situations. The final question is What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? I would suggest keeping yourself informed. Another suggestion is recycle to keep earth healthy and clean.

1. How do the earth systems affect each other? Earth systems affect each other by the weather and energy that’s being shown throughout the climate. 2. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? It can aid in handling natural disasters by telling us what we going to experience and what’s going to be affected or damage. Also knowing what you have to do to get out of them. 3. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? We can stop littering and recycle more to save polluting air. My reaction is that it’s amazing how we don’t know what we should know about natural disasters and what it can actually do.

natural disasters and earth systems research

Posted by James Doroba in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 10:23 am

Earth systems affect each other because as one energy is going on it passes to another and constantly is moving to the next stage. Understanding of environmental science can aid in handling natural disasters because it tells us how things move in the environment and how they change over time. We can make more safe places to go in case of a natural disaster occurs and we could prepare ourselves for what is coming.

Tornadoes

Posted by Amir Leaphart-Curry in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 10:22 am

Tornadoes impact earth systems in many ways. There is a massive transfer of energy when Tornadoes occur. Most of the time that energy comes from the atmosphere and is stored in the form of potential energy in the water vapor of a supercell storm. Regarding the earth's system, no system is isolated. They all interact with each other and impact each other. In discovering tornadoes and how they form, the connections of each of the earth's systems are observable, especially how the atmosphere impacts the biosphere. If we understand how natural disasters impact the earth, then we can better prepare for them. We know that increased moisture in the air enables the likelihood of Tornadoes.to be more prevalent, so if we do not work to curb global warming, tornadoes will be more likely. We can prepare to be safe from tornadoes by taking elementary steps like staying in cellars or away from windows when they strike. But the broader point is working to slow global working.

Earthquakes

Posted by Mariano Mattei in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 10:21 am

Working on this mini project, I learned a lot about Earth's systems, earthquakes, and how they interact with each other. Although I wasn't here to work with my group on the first day, I do think I ended up accomplishing a lot. I was able to help my group through the struggle of researching as well as help them put it all together. One thing I think I could have done better was to get more sources. We ended up with exactly four sources, but I feel like that is only meeting the expectation, and not going above and beyond. In doing this project, I was able to learn that Earth's systems interact with each other, and when one system changes, it affects the other systems as well. For example, if earthquakes occur (geosphere) underwater (hydrosphere), then seismic waves occur, water flow is faster/slower, and in extreme cases, tsunamis occur. As people study environmental science and gain a better understanding of natural disasters, we are able to know how to protect/prepare ourselves in case of an emergency, as well as maybe being able to prevent the natural disasters. Efforts we can make to create a sustainable future are to get better technology to analyze the Earth, finding out when a natural disaster will occur ahead of time so that we can properly prepare and not rush out. Earthquakes Aren't That Bad (joking they're terrible)

Essential Questions:

1. Events from from Earth system could affect every other Earth system.

2. If you know what environmental science aid is, you can protect yourself and others as well as always be prepared for a natural disaster.

3. I think if we get everyone at least semi ready for things like natural disasters as well as other things, the world will be a safer place and it will make our future seem less grim.

My reaction to this project is that it was pretty fun. At first I felt as though we weren't prepared but after getting it done and submitting, I think it was a cool project and I learned things I haven't learned before.

Natural Disasters and Earth System Research

Posted by Collin Shaw in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 10:16 am

1. How do the earth systems affect each other? Every single Earth System affects each other because they all rely on each other to be successful. For example, if the atmosphere becomes overly contaminated the biosphere and hydrosphere will also become contaminated and all forms of life on those earth systems will become tainted and can eventually die. 2. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? If you have a high understanding of environmental science you can have a better understanding of how natural disasters affect the environment that was damaged and how humans can rebuild after the destruction and even make an inhabitable environment stable for living. 3. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? We need to decrease the production of plastic. Tons of plastic ends up in the ocean and is hurting sea animals. For example, plastic straws are killing sea turtles and other marine life. If we can decrease the production of plastic we can save an already decreased population of sea turtles and other marine life.

Natural Disasters and Earth System Research

The earth systems affect each other because they all need each other to function. Even without just one biosphere, it would be off. Understanding environmental science can aid in handling natural disasters because you can learn the good and bad about it. Allows you to be prepared for any situation in a natural disaster. You can't actually stop a volcanic eruption. It's a disaster that happens naturally. All we can do it be prepared at anytime for one.

Tornadoes

Posted by Keith Corbin in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 10:13 am

The earth's systems interact with each other by the transformation of energy from the different spheres of the earth. For example tornadoes are a mix of energies such as; kinetic, potential, thermal, electrical, and chemical energy. The understanding of environmental science can aid us during natural disasters by us knowing whats in the air and how to stay safe from the dangerous particles. It also tells us what signs there are which can help us understand the type of natural disaster. I feel as though the changing in the climate due to global warming can help keep a sustainable future, because we will conserve the energy we get so we won't run out.
