Sustainable Business and Resource Management

Posted by Sarah Sam in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at 3:24 pm

For our benchmark, my group and I created a sustainable business plan focused in the food industry. After researching how other food industries impact our earth spheres, resources used, and the overall carbon footprint, we created ASAM Cafe to outweigh the negative factors and promote sustainable practices community and world wide.

In the food industry, high levels of carbon are released in the atmosphere due to the transportation and extraction of natural materials, as well as greenhouse gases, caused by energy usage in stores and manufacturing plants. All these factors intertwine with one another and directly impact earth's system (biosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere) in a never ending chain. For example, with the mass production of animals to fulfill the demand of meat in America. It leads to the creation of industrial farms which conduct harmful practices that are inflicted on animals and affects the environment. As the biosphere is being negatively impacted, with amount of land that goes to industrial farms and also add  deforestation, it disrupts the geosphere. With this information, I believe that we can create a sustainable future by using more environmental friendly practices such as using renewable energy or eating clean meat.

Building a Sustainable Business

Asam Cafe

In our project of creating a sustainable business and resource management. Our group decided to build a sustainable and greener cafe based out of the food industry and inspiration from Starbucks. In order to reduce the C02 levels of our cafe, we have decided to get all our ingredients locally as well as create a system that recycles water in and outside the cafe. The earth systems will be affected by our cafe by the C02 emissions caused by the transportation of goods and the use of water for our cafe. The C02 emissions can increase the temperature of the area over time or even cause smog. However, because we have resorted for a greener local approach we will diminish the emissions produced and with the recycling of water we will create sustainability. We won’t harm the biosphere nor the hydrosphere that much as we will strive to be Eco-friendly, and self-sustained.

Sustainable Business- Cafe

Posted by Alisha Lane in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at 10:59 am

Q1 Benchmark

Cafe ASAM

In an attempt to create a sustainable business our group created a cafe that was influenced by Starbucks. We researched sustainable business models to build the basis of our cafe around for a more environmentally friendly experience. To decrease our carbon footprint we would have to get nearly all of our ingredients locally, and recycle our water use with sustainable practices like tank treatments and etc. At our cafe we wanted to create something that was enjoyable yet efficient for the environment and those that live in it. If other companies followed our business model, and even built upon it I think it would lead to a far more sustainable future. The biggest cause of pollution and carbon emission in the food industry is the transportation of goods, food/ water waste, and using materials that aren't compostable or organic. With more influences of sustainable businesses the future of the food industry could potentially become more efficient energy wise and less harmful to the environment. After researching how to create a sustainable business i think it could be useful to me in a future to help create a legitimate company that focuses on sustainability.

McDonald Sustainable buisness

How do the earth systems affect each other? Plants are in the biosphere and they collect water from the hydrosphere. The `nutrients from the soil , which come from the geosphere and releases water vapor into the atmosphere. This then positively affects animals and organisms who are based in the atmosphere. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? and your reaction. In order to create a more sustainable future we could attempt to conserve our resources . This includes our food supply , so we could begin using clean meat . This would even be beneficial for the consumer and the animal . Personally i think it would be a good idea and would positively benefit the people in American society . Sustainable Mcdonald's

Posted by Benjamin Hahn in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 8:19 am

It is evident from objective data and statistics that Mcdonald’s’s business practices are not sustainable for the environment and will play a role in the depleting the earth of its natural resources, and warming to planet to a point of no return.

Mcdonald’s has two meat suppliers: Keystone Foods (now owned by Tyson Foods) and Lopez Foods. Tyson Foods takes pride in only working with independent, family owned farms. But while these farms are independent and family owned they are factory farms. According to the Ethical Choices Program, factory farming is the largest contributor to environmental damage. Tyson foods justifies their practices by glorifying the farms they work with, drawing the conclusion that if they are family owned, they must be ethical. But this conclusion is false because the fact that a business is family owned does not mean it is a small, ethical business, Mcdonald’s itself is family owned. Furthermore, the farms that tyson foods works with are hardly even family owned as tyson foods owns the animals, and the food that the animals eat. Only the land and equipment are independently owned.

Lopez foods produces the beef patties for the hamburgers sold at Mcdonald’s. They are made in a large scale factory, and all large scale factories contribute to air pollution if they do not use renewable energy. Lopez foods is not a farm, and they will not publicly state their suppliers. It can be inferred that this is because their suppliers farming practices are even more unethical than those from tyson farms.

New plan for sustainability:

In order to ensure that the food sold at Mcdonald’s is sustainability. Mcdonald’s should introduce Clean Meat as their new supplier. Clean Meat produces 100% real meat without killing animals. They do this by taking a sample of the animals cells, and then growing the cells outside of the animal. This will help the environment because far less animals will be required to produce the same amount of meat, and it will drastically reduce the costs of meat because a virtually endless supply of meat can be produced from a single animal.

In addition, Mcdonald’s should cease opening new restaurants, there are already 37,241 worldwide, which is more than enough. And all current restaurants should be powered by forms of renewable energy such as solar energy and wind energy.

Business and Resource Management

Posted by Julie Baker in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 8:17 am

All of the earth systems, the geosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere are all connected to each other is the sense that if one was to disappear or to get seriously damage all of the other systems would be crashing down. All of the systems transfer energy from one to another. When it comes to natural disasters and coming to the aid on the side of environmental science is using natural resources from one system to another. For example, planting mangroves along the water edge in areas that are prone to hurricanes and or tsunamis. The tree from the biosphere will protect for the most part the land from all this water. Things we can do as humans to create more of a sustainable future is cutting down the amount of meat and overall food we eat. We waste so much food and the amount of energy, water, and land that we used to maintain these animals and land. Something else that we can do which is very easy is just to cut down on our shower time and the use of car rides we take. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1AuyriedsW0bNhwirLkZ4pxjWGyTRPwac8F54Z6mNuGs/edit#slide=id.p

The Hurricanes

Posted by Anna Lemley in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 2:15 pm

Me and my group decided to discuss the nature of hurricanes for our natural disaster project. Hurricanes are created from energy that comes from the atmosphere as well as the hydrosphere. They can fit into five categories depending on the strength level of the winds. The earth systems affect each other by giving of different energy that is needed for each natural disaster to form. An understanding of the environmental science can help aid in handling natural disasters by using technology to determine where a natural disaster will take place and when it'll happen. In order to succeed a sustainable future we have to help each other when we are hit by these natural disasters by providing food and equipment to help the unfortunate victims.

Natural Disaster Blog Post By: Jahzaire Sutton

When thinking of the ways that humans have altered and continued to alter its environment, its safe to say that work on improving by the century. For example, we went from having to hunt for our food to now ordering through a drive thru from a fast food restaurant. With creations like that we have created the term sustainability. I say that because we as humans made it work with the bare minimum and look how we developed as a human race with the environment. In ecological terms, it can be measured with noticing the technology advancement in the world. Technology can be considered a system but we have more important systems. Such as the cycles. Like the Water cycle, photosynthesis, life cycle and etc. I would define the systems as, factors of life that help morph our environment that we have today. Now with cycles, you have energy. Energy can be found in all type of different forms such as radiant, chemical, nuclear, electrical and etc. Energy can take various forms, including energy that is stored (potential energy) and the energy of motion (kinetic energy). According to the first law of thermodynamics, energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be converted from one form into another. According to the second law of thermodynamics, in any conversion of energy, some energy is converted into unusable waste energy, and the entropy of the universe is increased. When it comes to organisms, they depend on energy input into them so that they can thrive and survive as a organism. To track the inputs and outputs energy, environmental scientists use systems analysis to calculate inputs to and outputs from a system and its rate of change. When thinking about how natural systems overtime, environmental conditions change. They change in such as temperature and or precipitation. In which can affect the types and numbers of organisms present.

Tsunami 101

Posted by Jymaire Oconnor in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 12:17 am

As the name implies this blog post will be about Tsunamis, well not really about them, it's a quick summary of our project. My team and I chose to study the natural disaster known as Tsunami and this research focused mainly on what a Tsunami is, in addition to, how it affects the Atmosphere, Geosphere, Hydrosphere, Cryosphere, Biosphere, and Ionosphere, as well as how these spheres affect the Tsunami. There will be a link below that opens up to piktochart allowing you to view our project. Thank you and enjoy! https://create.piktochart.com/output/32487430-earth-system-research 1. How do the earth systems affect each other? Earth systems affect each other in a cause and effect kind of way, for example, a Tsunami is Caused by an earthquake or volcanic eruption underwater, land, life on land, and marine life are negatively affected by this massive wave. 2. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? The better you know your land and the danger that may come with it, the better you are at handling the situation. 3. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? Recycle, reduce, reuse, as well as function more with solar panels and we should dim down on releasing smoke from factories as well as releasing smoke from vehicles and we'll be fine.
