Lucas Borschell Capstone

Posted by Lucas Borschell in Senior Capstone · Elish · ILP/TFI/CAP on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at 10:55 pm

My capstone is a book, which contains several short stories. The stories are made to represent themes and ideas from people close to me in the senior class, as well as their feelings about the school. Throughout the process of meeting with my mentor and altering my plan, I have been working on these stories and adjusting them to make them the most meaningful sendoff to our class possible. Most of the early difficulty was making a plan that I liked and that worked, one that encapsulated all I wanted to do with the project as well as make a final product that I could be proud of. This included format, presentation type, quantity of stories, and outlines. The next difficulty was then asking around to those in my senior class that were close to me and getting prompts from them. This took some time management to do, and an issue with it was that the people who would submit prompts varied as well as when I would be able to see them and ask. This project has taught me a lot about my writing style, common mistakes I make, how to properly plan out stories, as well as given me experience on how to make well established pieces based off of specific themes or parts of life. It has helped me to improve and further integrated my application of literature to real life situations. I enjoyed my time working on this capstone, and I'm proud for what I've accomplished.

When i was four years old my mom bought me my first gaming console. A man down the street from my house was selling a Playstation 2. That's where my love of games began. Now my only goal is to spread to the joy of video games to others. That's why I have decided to make my capstone the creation of my first game named "The Restraint of Carlos".

Based on the popular games "The Binding Of Issac" and the original Legend of Zelda games, it is a top down survival game where the objective is to defeat as many enemies as possible before all of your health is depleted. The images you see are some I took during the creation of the game. During my presentation People will be able to the firsts to play the game.

Internship with State Representative Rabb

Posted by Max Harris in Senior Capstone · Elish · ILP/TFI/CAP on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 10:23 pm

My capstone consisted of me going to State Representative Chris Rabb’s office every Wednesday to volunteer. I helped the three women at the office Foluke, Carla, and Danielle organize things around the office, I put data into the constituent tracking system, and helped people who came into the office fill out applications and with other miscellaneous things. I also help out at events ran by Rabb’s office such as food pantries and luncheons. As someone who is interested in politics, this internship was a way I could dip my toe in the shallow end of the pool. It was a wonderful rollercoaster, with some days being rather dry, full of busy work and plugging in information into a computer, and some days that are rewarding, days where I get to felt like I was being of service to members of the community. I have been able to understand the work that is necessary to create a positive change, and for that I will forever value this experience.

“Prom has all the elements of a popular story. It reeks of all-Americanness, tension, drama. It has romance. Pretty dresses. Dancing. Limos. High school. Coming of age.” - Adora Svitak

The Capstone project that I completed along with two other partners was the planning of the Junior class prom.  The initial person responsible for the inspiration of this project was my partner Tajanae Smith, but after several discussions we decided to work collectively along with Aliyah Watson. I believe that with this Capstone project, it would positively impact the SLA Beeber community. For instance, by helping the juniors, we were able to show the rest our community that by collaborating you can truly learn from one another despite how hard you may think the challenge may be. The vision for my Capstone project was to be able to effectively create the best prom experience for the Junior class. Despite what you may think, planning a prom is not the easiest task. There are sleepless nights, constant phone calls, mass group texts, and not everyone agrees with each others ideas. However, the job must be done!

During my experience I also set a personal goal before starting my Capstone experience. The personal goal that I set for myself was to be able to apply all of my knowledge that I have learned from the five core values and apply them to my prom planning throughout the year. I strongly believe that by setting personal goals for this project, it helped me develop several skills that I didn’t think were essential for the prom.

Tajanae Smith Capstone

Posted by Tajanae Smith in Senior Capstone · Elish · ILP/TFI/CAP on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 9:23 pm

My fellow 2 classmates and I kept overhearing many complaints from the juniors about the lack of progress on their prom and how they were not pleased with the way things were going with it. So we decided to try and help Ms.Houwen with planning their prom. We selected a theme which was Vintage Hollywood, then after looking into a couple different locations, we settled for the IATSE ballroom in south Philadelphia. We proceeded to find a photographer and dj. We managed to stay under our budget and we were able to make it so that the tickets were not expensive. We added a candy table which was where the majority of our cost came from. From doing this project I have learned that planning a prom requires a lot of work also you have to be creative so things won't be as expensive, the most important thing I learned was that when working in groups communication is the key and we lacked in that. I wish we would have been more organized as well. But in the end, it all turned out really nice and inexpensive.

Yarisnel/Diabetes Awareness

Posted by Yarisnel Rosario in Senior Capstone · Elish · ILP/TFI/CAP on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 9:11 pm

Diabetes is one of the leading  diseases happening all over the world.  I personally know about 5 people who have diabetes. It is because of this epidemic that I decided to do my senior project on a diabetes awareness video. Although I already know a lot about the disease eye when to doctors and nurses and people who have this disease to talk and to understand more about it.  This video was not only important but it was personal to me. As you can see in the video of my grandmother has diabetes. she also lives with me, if they're my family we all take turns helping out taking care of her giving her the proper assistant she needs. The video I don't only explain what diabetes is I give a inside as to how my grandmother got it and how it has affected her.  I also gave pointers on ways to prevent diabetes and the difference between the two types of Diabetes. I hope for this project is that people will he and get a better understanding of how diabetes worse and how to it can have such an effect on a person's life.

PIOTR'S BLACKSMITHING CAPSTONE

Posted by Piotr Trembecki in Senior Capstone · Elish · ILP/TFI/CAP on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 8:06 pm

My senior capstone was on the art of blacksmithing; a profession that is generally considered dead. And they are mostly correct as many things once forged by smiths are now mass-produced, yet there are exceptions. Today, some do it as a hobby, some do custom orders as a part-time, and a few even forge full-time, supplying tools or creating artwork for customers. My capstone was introducing forging to SLA@Beeber originally as an excuse to further my hobby. Through arduous efforts it became more than that. After getting past the expenses and resource limitations my capstone ended up being a mini-course for two other students. By now it became a sort of a private club but upon being asked if I would be coming back post-graduation to further the club, it became a foundation that this could become a mini-course. Now having exposed some students to it and receiving positive feedback and enthusiasm, I hope to further my capstone into a permanent and unique feature of SLA@Beeber. This journey has shown me the difficulty and also the joy of starting up something . It has also shown me how scary adult expenses are haha.

Nahja Lewis Senior Capstone Project

This is a picture of 22 pillows and care packages I made for a local women’s shelter.
The idea that I had for my Senior Capstone was turning an idea that I had into something bigger and better. The.Pillowtalk was an idea that I had for a pillow company with my target market being college students or people that just wish to add an accessory to their home decor. However, as I worked throughout the year, I had the idea of making a care package for those in need. I experienced some difficulties along the process, for example, finding what materials work best for
pillows, how to incorporate lining, the best way to create a care package, and making sure the pillows look presentable. I had the opportunity to create pillows and care packages for 22 women.

I am most proud of the process of making the packages. Cutting fabric, making sure it was accurate, stuffing them with poly fiber filling, and hand sewing them closed was a long process. However, I received a lot more practice with one thing that I consider a hobby. I am also proud to have done something positive for others. In the future, I hope to improve on my skill while also doing a great deed.

Capstone Nursing One On One by Ashley and Jorge.

Posted by Ashley Armstrong in Senior Capstone · Elish · ILP/TFI/CAP on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 3:16 pm

For my capstone, I wanted to create something that everyone will be able to benefit from as well as myself as this is my last year at Science Leadership Academy at Beeber. I wanted to make my mark on the school that's where my partner and I had come up the idea of creating a small workshop, during lunch that will involve STD and HIV. We also we are going to put our interview  that we took at the clinic center so we are able to show students a good a real-life example of this disease and how important public health we are also creating a website we will also present the presentation and the website to the school so we hope this answer all the questions you may have about this type of diseases. The reason for us to create a website was that we strongly felt as if nobody in this generations likes to read books anymore so we made it easier since the internet is very useful when getting information across the world. I feel as if I was able to grow as a student when creating this project this capstone as made me learn not only more about myself health but the public health as well. In fact, public health is extremely important not only does it affect our absorbent it affects our bodies as well. In this capstone, Jorge and I had come up the idea to interview a person who deals with HIV/ Aids computers on the ruler. As we asked the questions I felt as if I was able to get a better understanding of how  HIV relates to public health. Also, one thing many people may not know about HIV is if a woman had sexual intercourse with a person who has HIV and she gets pregnant that baby will be born with HIV. One important questions I felt like me and my parents kept getting asked was can it be transmitted by kissing,  touching, drinking off of that person to sum everything up the answer is no HIV can only be transmitted to a person by sexual intercourse. Overall this project had given me a different viewpoint.
