For my capstone I worked with Jailyn Pope-Thomas and we did a Sports Ceremony. The purpose behind this capstone was to recognize and shine light on all the student athletes that attend SLA Beeber and also the hard work and sacrifices that they’ve done over the school year, as they proudly represented our school throughout their respective seasons. Jailyn and I both know what it feels like to not get awarded for hard work so we gave athletes at SLA Beeber awards. It was a long process especially because we had to wait for the sports seasons to be over and then talk to the coaches. We gave everyone that showed up to the ceremony awards and will give the rat out when we see the other students. I learned how to be organized and how to do things like sports ceremonies and what it takes to get people involved with things like this. It was fun because we gave back to kids who were working hard as an student athlete and did something we are involved around because we play sports also. Since I want to be an entrepreneur I should know how to do things that are similar to having sports ceremonies. I care for people around me that are student athletes just like me because people I understand what it takes to be an student athlete and how it’s hard to balance school and the sport you play at the same time. I hope people continue to do this as their capstone but even better with awards and stuff.

So my casptone was to make a working racing go kart. I did this project with my friends Naji, Jeremy, Sergio, and Jordan. Our goal was to see how we can build an entire go kart by using the engineering process. All in all seeing how this would help us in life after school. The process was an extremely tiring and demanding process. Every meeting we had to see how we could actually pull this off, getting as creative as possible.

For my capstone my partner Jhalil Allen and I thought that we should host a sports ceremony for the student athletes here at SLA Beeber. The reason why we chose to do a sports ceremony is because we wanted to have all the athletes be recognized for their hard work and dedication because both me and Jhalil are both athletes and we know how it feels when the hard work and dedication that you put in all year isn't recognized. In our process we had to do a lot of planning ahead so that the ceremony could go smoothly without any mishaps. We had to make our own flyers for the event which we posted up around the school and posted it on our social media accounts, we had to check with Ms. Aziz to see if the auditorium was available for us to use for 30 minutes and then we had to talk to multiple coaches and players in each respected sport so that we could figure out what student athlete deserves what certificate we were giving out (MVP, Most Improved and Most Team Spirit). In the end we had an 'okay' turnout there wasn't as many student athletes there as we would like but some still showed up and that's all that matters. During this process we learned organization skills and also how to promote and create events.

What I did for my project was paint a series of paintings depicting how mental health affects students at SLA. I like to consider myself a bit of an artist, I'm going to minor in studio art in college. I myself suffer from a few mental illnesses and one of my coping skills is painting. So, for my capstone, I decided to survey students in SLA about how mental health affects them and I turned their responses into paintings. I made sure to survey students from each grade so that my paintings are representative, and then I took their responses and put them in a painting. With these paintings, I hope to raise mental health awareness as well as help my peers understand how mental health affects people and their everyday life. Please enjoy and spread your new found knowledge! Thank you.

For my capstone Kevin and I labelled the lights, gave directions on how to use them, and worked the school lights for Science Leadership Academy @ Beeber's first play, High School Musical! Kevin and I choose to do this because we knew that Ms Hare was going to need help putting the play together and since we were exposed to the play often during the week in theatre class, we decided that setting up and figuring out how to use the lights should be our capstone. We found out which switches do what and how to turn on certain lights while turning other lights off, the capability of extension cords, problem solving skills, and team building skills while working the lights during the play. It was a great experience and I'm glad I was apart of the first play at SLA@B!

Coming into high school, I was insecure and didn't really know how to handle the things I went through. It took me until I was in 11th grade to realize and understand how to properly handle my emotions and situations in a way that not only promoted my self-esteem but was healthy and positive. The idea of Why Do Girls Cry? was introduced to Demo Nianghane and me in 2018 by a friend. We decided to make a mini-organization that focused on the experiences high school girls have and teaching them ways to deal with those situations and emotions. We created a website that includes poems, videos, advice threads and even chatboxes that young teenage girls can use throughout high school that will encourage their self-esteem and happiness in a positive way despite any experiences that they encounter

For my capstone, I decided to create a project based on my future plans of volleyball and how my experience in high school has helped me with those plans. For my project, I interviewed freshmen who were on the JV volleyball team and asked about their experience and what they are looking for in a captain. My main focus was on the challenges and character traits that a person should have to be a team captain. Based off of the interviews, I learned that you need to be helpful when being a captain and showing leadership. My process for this project was a little rocky at first, but it winded up coming together. I reached my goal of finding what I wanted to learn and other people's interpretations of what it takes to have a leadership role. This project has taught me many lessons. For one, you shouldn’t be afraid to stand up and ask for help. Second, you have to work hard for what you want. These two things are life lessons to go by because it will get you through what we call life. After this project, I hope to be a volleyball coach in the future, but starting off I want to be a captain for my volleyball team in college. This experience will help me be the person that I want to be.

Imani Gonzalez's Capstone

For my capstone I decided to do a fashion show. This took months of preparation , I held auditions to see who wanted to be apart of the fashion show, I worked on designs, and created my first trial shirt. I held practices after school every Monday and Tuesday and as time passed I created more clothing. I didn't just want to do a fashion show because I am interested in fashion but for the students who tried out I had a goal to build their confidence. The time has came and the show was presented in the cafeteria. I think it was a growing experience for not just the models but for me as well. I learned a lot about myself, and whatever you want you have to work hard for. I am glad I got to help these young ladies, and men gain confidence and be more comfortable in an environment they will continue to be apart of. As I take on the future I hope to grow and build on what I love to do. If you would like to see some of the items the models displayed my website is : https://igonzalez49.wixsite.com/website

Lauren Wilson Capstone

When I first began brainstorming for my capstone, I knew I wanted to make a video that could act as sort of time capsule or record of what life was like for me as a high school senior in 2019. The original plan was to simply make a montage-style short film.To start, I began filming little clips day by day of things I was doing in and outside of school. Towards the end of the year, I felt satisfied with the amount of footage I had and began editing. This is when things started to change a bit. Though I liked the idea of a montage of special moments, I wanted to figure out how I could make the video more meaningful so that viewers could gain something from watching it. I decided to interview some friends and ask them what advice they would give to incoming high school students which I then edited over the footage I had collected, along with some music that I felt matched the tone of the video. The final product is what I have presented as my capstone. During this process, I learned that it’s okay for your finished product not to be exactly how you initially pictured. This project took on several different forms throughout the year as my ideas changed and evolved, but in the end, I was extremely happy with my final product, which ended up being a mix between my original idea and new ideas I had come up with along the way.
