For my capstone my partner Kyla and I created a website directed towards lowerclassmen to help them navigate through high school. The website originally started as a website to inform anyone young and old about different mental health issues and coping mechanisms. In the process of developing the website my partner and I decided to refine our target audience and make a website to help some kids make a smoother transition from middle school to high school. We believe our website can help upper and lower classmen manage stress and the college process. https://sites.google.com/slabeeber.org/mentalhealthwebsite/home

This capstone was about inspiring people to take that leap faith so you can become financially independent as well. The pop-up shop was to show people ways it can be done and to show that it's ok to think outside of the box too.

For my capstone, I have created a podcast called "Let's talk about it SLA''. These segments have been discussed by both Teachers and students alike. Furthermore, in these episodes, you will listen to stories and experiences about burnout, adapting to change, finding motivation, and more. I wanted to make my capstone to be inclusive to the community around me, which is SLA. I thought about how teachers and students aren't having conversations regarding mental health without it too being taboo. What better way of bringing SLA together than to be vulnerable in some aspects. On the other hand, this process of putting it all together was a hassle. From research upon research of finding the right domain for recording to actually editing, took some trial and error. But after some time I was able to record my podcasts on Ancor and edit it easily on Garageband. All my episodes are now up and running for free on Spotify! Furthermore, I learned that making a podcast requires much patience and flexibility, especially when you have people featured on it. Also, I didn't expect to have as much fun as I did making it. Lastly, I hope my podcast brings comfort to those who are struggling and realizing that they are not alone.

Kyla Pritchett's Capstone

For my capstone my partner Davina and I created a website directed towards the freshmen to help them navigate through high school. Our original plan was to create a website to inform the students of SLA about different mental health issues and coping mechanisms. During the process of brainstorming and reflecting on our experience, we found that we wished we had a ‘guide’ to help us in high school. This resulted in us changing our idea and creating a ‘survival guide’ for the freshman to help them easily transition into high school. We hope our website can help upper and lower classmen ‘survive' SLA and the college process.

Here it is... my capstone, quite a journey now and one that was done with the utmost care. I made a documentary that features interviews and segments based on the idea of trying to solve my guiding question "what makes creators scared of making art?". It was a long process and tough to make due to the circumstances but it makes a great example in itself on why creators shouldn't be afraid to create. this entire thing has taught me so much about the beauty of the film and why it so important to encourage people to stick with their ideas and try things without hesitation.

Nyzhae Wiggins Capstone

My name is Nyzhae, For my capstone, I started a program for kids between the ages of 5-8. I started this program because I feel that kids at those ages are very impressionable and they look up to people my age. I wanted to show them what a positive role model looks like, Over the course of two months I volunteered at daycare two or three times a week and created activities for the kids to do during the pandemic. Doing this project to give back to my community taught me a lot about myself as a person, I learned that I want a career that has something to do with children. I am going to college for Criminal Justice but I know I want to be a child advocate lawyer. Going to the park, laughing, participating in relay races, and drawing really was so riveting now that I am older I don't do those things anymore so being able to do those things and share those moments with the kids was an amazing opportunity. My main focus with this program was teaching the kids basic lessons such as learning to express their emotions in a positive way while still getting your point across, treating others how they want to be treated and most importantly respecting one another.

My name is Moussa Sow and I am currently a senior. For my Capstone Project, I was running a Multilingual Club. The club will celebrate the many languages of our school. We will teach each other about the languages we speak or are learning. Participants in the club will learn the importance of learning a new language and how it can help us in the future. We will meet every Friday during lunch, 12:30-1 pm

DaShaun Smith's Capstone

Posted by Dashaun Smith in Senior Capstone · Burrows-Stone on Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 9:27 am

For my capstone project, I choose to create an essay researching the benefits and harms of school uniforms. In my essay, I focused on the research question, “Do uniforms teach students conformity or how to dress appropriately?” In my essay, I highlighted all of the benefits and harms of uniforms and possible solutions to them. I chose this topic because, for almost 10 years, I had to wear a uniform to school in the Philadelphia public school system along with many other children without an explanation. It was a mandatory requirement and most students that I've met hated them. I wanted to understand why uniforms exist when many students didn't like them and I wanted to research why they matter and their purpose. I knew that it would take time to write a good research essay, so I didn't start writing it until after months of research. During this entire process, I learned that I shouldn't fall on something that feels comfortable and push myself to be more open to new ideas. I also learned that I value creativity a lot more than I realized as it wasn't much in this project. However, I am proud of it because I was still genuinely curious about school uniforms and the harms and benefits of them.

Mariatu Fayia Capstone

There are many things this project has taught me. I learned how to make and manage a sophisticated website to share information. I also learned that if I do a little a day, I can have a lot done by the deadline without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. An example of this was when I realized that my project needed to switch from show and tell to persuasion. Before, I was showcasing the amazing projects I was involved in and how that was going to impact my future. Learning the true meaning of this capstone project, which was to have a project that impacted a certain community, I switched my focus to using my projects to show high school students at SLA Beeber why science should be a field of consideration. If I didn’t manage my time well, I would never have met the requirements, or had such a laid-out website that really honed in on my objective. However, the most important lesson I have learned about myself is that I am always willing to do background research and expose myself to the community so that they can learn from my story. I believe that each person has gone through something different in order to share with the next person. I use my communication, advocating, writing, and research skills to inform others. Though my project is turned in and being graded now, I am still making beneficial changes and including more resources for students to use.

Carmen Yamile Shuman-Fletcher Capstone

As a graduating senior, I plan to pursue a teaching career in Early Childhood Education. This action research project allowed me to gain the experience of working with younger children. How does early learning of Spanish impact the Pre- K students' early Spanish knowledge and classroom culture?. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, all instruction occurred remotely. I continued to adapt my teaching style and lesson plans based on my collaboration with the classroom teacher and my SLABeeber mentor teachers. My lessons focus on students learning the color, animals, fruits, vegetables, months, and days in Spanish. My purpose in designing these lessons, intentionally focusing on basic language concepts for 3-year-olds was to offer these students the opportunity to have some exposure to a new language; Spanish. As a future educator, this project allows offered the opportunity to have real-world experience teaching younger students that I could apply when I become a Spanish teacher.
