WARNING: Lead Poisoning

Posted by Mikeala Commander in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 12:25 pm

The reason behind the choosing of this topic was because it was the most interesting to us. I had a brother who passed from this, and thought it would be cool to have more knowledge on the topic, and get my friends to learn as well. I contributed a lot, as far as the general background information, and as well as thinking including a skit would be cool as well. In the group, I played the child (in the script) as well as just general information that I was able to add, and present in the video. I think we worked really well together as a group. For the future though, I think it's important for us to learn how to properly use our resources to make a video the way we actually wanted to.. Although our video was still done to our best ability. The most meaningful part of the experience for me, was again understanding exactly how my brother passed away from this, and understanding some prevention and how we can help kids in the future that may come across chipped paint, or any of the other causes. https://youtu.be/pdRcLY2VaUQ

LEAD POISONING Benchmark

Posted by Anisa Johnson in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 12:21 pm

In the video we created there is detailed description of the effects and elements of lead poisoning. This is a video targeted towards parents because they are the ones who are responsible for making sure their children aren't exposed to lead. We chose this topic because it is a large issue in our city and we are surrounded by people who have been affected in the city of Philadelphia. This has become an issue that it's up to us to break the chain of in the future by being careful. In this project I contributed information about the topic and visuals. I also contributed a lot of positive energy to the group per usual. We have a very good skit and very good acting skills. Next time I hope we can get a camera to work because the quality could've been even better than it already is. Please take precaution when you are buying apartments, homes, etc. These things are life threatening if they contain lead and could lead to death. https://youtu.be/pdRcLY2VaUQ

Nuclear Waste

Posted by Mariano Mattei in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 11:57 am

The video my group and I created was based on nuclear waste, the effects of it, and what we can do to fix the issue. I originally wanted to pick this issue because I didn't know much about it, and I wanted to learn more. I think it was a very interesting topic and I am happy with our choice. It was great to actually learn about a topic that can have a devastating resolution if we don't do anything about it. I think I did a lot for our project. I found a lot of the resources that were used in the final video, and I also created the script for the main evidence of our PSA. The only thing I think we could have done better is to make a longer PSA. The only complication with that is that there are only so many things we can talk about with nuclear waste. The most meaningful part of this PSA is the fact that I now have a better understanding of nuclear waste and its effects on living organisms if they are exposed to it. In the end, I am extremely happy with the research I have done and the notes I have taken/provided to the rest of the class. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mEm_cBF5CM

Toxic Waste is a no no

Posted by Lamier Howard in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 11:54 am

So our video is literally just the 3 of us talking about the toxic waste.  Labaron introduces the topic, Emmy talks about the issue, and I talk about what we can do to stop the issue. We chose this topic because we think toxic waste is a very huge issue that isn't talked about enough. We need more people to learn about it. Also, we think toxic waste is the most interesting topic to do. The role I did for the group was talking about the solutions for the issues. I think I did a good job speaking loudly in the video and finding a lot of solutions for the issue. However, we could've made the video longer since it was only 3 minutes long. I think the most meaningful part of the video is telling about how the issue can be solved and why it's important to be solved.

Environmental Science Q2 BM Reflection: Oil Refineries

Posted by Amir Leaphart-Curry in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 8:17 am

The initial reason I suggested analyzing and researching oil refineries in Philadelphia as our Benchmark was because it was a unique topic outside of the listed issues, as well as it's political pertinence. Oil & Fossil Fuel have been attributed to the erosion of the Ozone layer, global warming, and other detrimental impacts on the environment. This issue is especially contentious as legislators and politicians in the US have battled over the issue of climate change and fossil fuel, particularly petroleum and oil regarding the acceleration of climate change. Some legislators have chosen to side with oil industries and lobbies while others oppose these lobbies and advocate for new and more efficient renewable energy systems. This PSA provides a slight political and ecological perspective which could help folks understand the ramifications of our reliance on oil but also decide which policies and politicians to support when it comes to the issue of the environment. 2. We all contributed well. I played a most significant role in explaining the political and social perspective of our researched issue, while my groupmates assisted in culminating the project by doing research on the environmental impacts. I also played a role in acquiring the clips we needed for our voice over. 3. The thing we did best was the writing of the script, I think we could've done a better job at editing the video, there are some parts which are unclear. 4. The most meaningful part of creating this PSA was synthesizing the political and environmental context to have a deeper understanding of environmental justice.

Environmental Justice Benchmark

Posted by Cindy Perez-Nieto in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at 11:09 pm

For this quarter my team created a PSA where we talked about water pollution and the effects it has. Our video explains what water pollution is and how is it an environmental justice. We give suggestions on how we can help our world make a better place. We wanted for teens to be aware of the topic because we know that if everyone becomes aware and follows the suggestions then we can make actually make a difference. We did well in communicating with each other during the break and staying on top of our work.

Water Pollution

For my second quarter environmental science benchmark, my group members and I completed a PSA video of the importance of water pollution. One reason we chose this topic was to raise awareness of how bad water pollution affects our earth negatively. One thing my group members and I did well was stay on top of our checkpoints and keep in contact. The most meaningful part of this PSA was being able to learn and expand my knowledge of water pollution. Check out our PSA here!

Q2 Benchmark: Air Pollution

Posted by Rilajah Baynes in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at 8:57 pm

This is video is showing what cause air pollution and giving tips on how to solve the air pollution problem. We chose this topic because not everyone talk about or care that our environment is really getting worst because of humans actions. This project I was explaining why the environment is getting so bad and explaining how no one is doing anything about it. I think the whole project went well and I wish we could've added more to it. The most meaningful things is when need to get better about this cause because we are making this worst. https://share.icloud.com/photos/0vZ2RO9QhiI07ozfQZ_fl7OEw

Oil refineries in South Philly

Posted by James Doroba in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at 8:17 pm

Our benchmark was about oil refineries in south Philly. The video talks about how many people with health issues especially children are affected by them. We then talk about how Mayor Jim Kenny plans to make Philly a green energy city by the year 203. Next, we talk about how and why businesses use these refineries, but they are just simply not safe for the public. Lastly, we talk about 3 politicians who are helping to stop oil refineries across Philly I contributed to the benchmark by answering research questions and finding evidence to support them and gathering some pictures to go along with the audio. Something that I did well was given good emotion during my part of the video and facilitating in my group. Something that I would do differently is to help out more with the editing portion. The most meaningful part of this benchmark to me was the ending because I really would love to see Mayor Jim Kenny stick to his word about getting rid of oil refineries and going to green energy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFyUPMLg60g

Q2 Benchmark: Oil Refineries in South Philadelphia

Posted by Eva Litke in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at 3:51 pm

Our video is about air pollution in Philly due to oil refineries, specifically the refineries in South Philadelphia. Thousands of concerned parents have spoken out publicly about their children, many of whom struggle from asthma, having increased health issues due to the air pollution close to where they live. Although oil refineries are beneficial to businesses who need the refined resources, the process is not safe to the public. Our video also mentions 3 politicians who are in support of making Philly air clean again; go vote for them! I contributed to a few of the research questions, wrote different segments of our script, and helped a lot in the editing process for our video. I think I did a good job including my group members in the process for further ideas, feedback, and assistance when I was unsure about something. I definitely struggled with some time management, however. There were multiple times when I felt rushed to finish editing the video. I think this is just due to the fact that none of my group members were very comfortable with iMovie or Garageband, so it took longer. For me, the most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA was the very end, when we watched the completed video all the way through. I was really impressed with the outcome and am hopeful that we will earn a good grade! OUR VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFyUPMLg60g
