Internet Survival Guide

Posted by Zakirah Boyd in Technology- Freshmen · Hertz · a1 on Monday, December 12, 2016 at 9:04 am

Slide 1- Before social media, we were extremely limited in our means to interact with others and we were limited largely to the people that we knew in-person.The internet and social media has drastically changed the way people all over the world interact and communicate. People are now able to access information and share things in a way that was not possible in a previous generation. Social networks such as Facebook have provided completely new options for people to socialize, by creating individual profiles that can be used as a digital scrapbook, photo album, journal, and communications portal. Users can send each other public messages, private messages, or instant messages, and can even group their “friends” into different levels depending upon the amount of information the user wants to share with that person.

Slide 2- Lack of Control-when you post something you lose all control of where that post may end up

Slide 4- Permanence- something being permanently online.

Slide 3- Immediacy - how fast something gets spread or post online.

Slide 5- Jessica  Logan, was a Ohio high school senior who committed suicide after sending a nude photo of herself to her boyfriend. When they broke up, he sent the photo to everyone else at her school. Jesse was harassed for months by the other girls at her school. Jessie’s grades began to drop, than she started skipping school, but when she did go to school, she would hide in the bathroom to avoid being teased.Lack of Control:The moment she sent those pictures to her boyfriend (at the time) she had no control over what happened to them or what people would do with them.Immediacy:When her ex-boyfriend sent those pictures to everyone in her school, there was no stopping it. Even if the pictures got “deleted”,everyone saw the pictures already. People could have screenshot, share, and post it on the internet for everyone else to see.Permanence:It's nearly impossible to completely remove a picture off the internet, because there's always a chance that someone downloaded, or screenshotted the pictures.

Slide 6- 1. Search yourself

Do a Google search for your name and also a search for your name in Google Images.

Slide 7- Keep private things private

You can, and should, put privacy setting on all content you want to share only with a select group of friends and family.

Slide 8- When I think of internet rules, I think of these 3 main rules:

1. Don't share any information that could potentially put me in harm.

2. Don't share any inappropriate posts, pictures, or information.

3. No bullying activities

I am going to use the example of  Jessica logan because when she sent her boyfriend an  inappropriate picture he sent it out to everyone and she began to get bullied which ruined her online and offline life, and it led to suicide.

Slide 9- Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology

.Mashups- Altering a piece of content so as to embarrass or insult the subject

Trolling- Posting online comments or content with the sole purpose of inciting anger in others.

Slide 10-  Bystander - Take action by posting words of support for the victim.

Victim- Block the bully.

Bully- It takes much more energy to be mean than it does to be nice.

Slide 11- Don’t post any personal information online – like your address, email address or mobile number.

Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself.  Once you’ve put  a picture of yourself online most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.

Keep your privacy settings as high as possible

Never give out your passwords

Don’t befriend people you don’t know on the internet

  1. The internet changed communication because back then you had to do more stuff to get in touch with somebody or contact them, now all you have to do is push one button.

     2.  Immediacy is like when you post something it could get around fast. Permanence is when you post something it would forever be permanent it will always be always be on the internet. Lack of Control is like if you post something and someone screenshots it before you delete it you lose control of what you posted even if you didn’t mean to i guess someone could post it or do whatever with it.

     3. Two ways you can manage and protect your identity online is never putting personal information on the internet or any social media sites. You can use a nickname or anything. Protecting yourself offline is like being who you are online and offline so there won’t be no problem with catfish and stuff.

      4. In my opinion i don’t think the internet has rules but social media does like if you were to buy a new computer right now when you open it it won’t have a page of rules but then again i really don’t know because there are rules and regulations to the internet.

    5. To me cyberbullying means when someone is getting embarrassed or humiliated thru the internet thru technology or a mobile device.

   6. Two kinds of cyber bullying is harassment and threatening , harassment is like intimidating someone online or someway thru the internet. Threatening someone is like harming someone thru the internet.

   7. Bullies don’t bully, Bystanders don’t watch they get help, Victims stand up for there themselves.

  1. An explanation of how the Internet has changed communication. Make sure to use at least one specific example.
  2. Define Immediacy, Permanence and Lack of Control as they pertain to the Internet and explain how Immediacy, Permanence and Lack of Control affect both our offline and our online identities and lives. Include at least one example for each.
  3. What are two ways that you can actively manage and protect your identity and your reputation online? (one of each)
  4. Answer the question: “Does the Internet have rules?” Use at least one specific example.
  5. Define cyberbullying in your own words.
  6. Describe at least 2 kinds of cyberbullying and why they are considered cyberbullying
  7. Provide advice for: victims, bullies and bystanders of cyberbullying
   8. Your Top 5 tips for using the Internet                                                                     ________________________________________________________________

1. Internet change communication by letting us talk or text people from far away. One example is FaceTime. It allow you to see the person you are talking to. Just like if was in person, face to face. Another one is KiK Messenger App. It let you text the people, when you're connected to the internet.
2. Immediacy- When something spread quickly.

Permanece- When something you post stay there forever.

Lack of Control- When you lose possession of something you post

3. Immediacy online is when some happen immediately basically. For example, you can post a picture you regret and try to take it down, but it spread quick. Offline people can be quick to judge you cause of the photo.

Permanence online is when you post something and it stays there forever. For example, you can post something you regret on an old account that you lost the password to. How are you gonna take it down if you don’t know the password for that account. Offline whatever you did in the past, stays with you forever.

Lack of Control online is when you post something and take it down, but someone screenshot it or has a copy of it. For example you post a picture you didn’t like. You take it down, but someone took a screenshot of it and repost it. You can’t take it down cause it’s not your account, but you can try to ask them to. Offline example is when you tell a lie and it start spreading to everyone.

4. You can actively manage your identity by posting ok picture of you. So when you look up your name on Google, someone else with the same name and a bad reputation doesn’t pop-up.

You can protect your identity and your reputation is not to post anything stupid. Think before you post.

5. The internet does not have rules, but websites does. For example Instagram, if you post anything and you get reported. They can either ban you or give you another chance and just delete that account. You can’t get ban from the internet, but from website because websites has rules.

6. Cyberbullying is like bullying someone in public, but online. One type of bullying is trolling. Trolling is messing with someone and trying to get a reaction from them. Another on is shaming

7. Victim- Ignore them
  • Bullies- Just think before you do something stupid.

  • Bystanders- Get an adult.

Cyber Bullying- Think before you do something.
8.

Don’t do anything stupid.

Don’t engage in arguments online.

Don’t start arguments online.

Don’t join any trouble making group.

Have fun

  • An explanation of how the Internet has changed communication. Make sure to use at least one specific example. An Explanation of how the internet has changed communication? The internet changed communication in a way that you can do everything faster. For an example i can text someone a message faster than walking or driving to tell that person something. The internet help me communicate with people faster.

  • Define Immediacy, Permanence and Lack of Control as they pertain to the Internet. Immediacy is when something is sent out immediately, like a post or something. Once u post it , it’s sent out immediately and automatically. Permanence is when something is there forever. For an example if a posted a meme or something and of bunch of people liked it , it might be on the internet forever. Lack of control is when someone doesn’t have control over something. For an example if someone post a unwanted picture of me , i have lack of control to delete it because it’s not on my profile or page.

  • An explanation of how Immediacy, Permanence and Lack of Control affect both our offline and our online identities and lives. Include at least one example. Immediate post can kinda be a bad thing because if i post something by a accident it’s immediately sent out to everyone really fast, and if everyone see an embarrassing post then it can mess up my reputation. Permanence is very dangerous, if i post something and a bunch of people repost it might never ever be off the internet. If it was a bad post then everyone can see something i don’t want up and that can mess up someone’s reputation. Lack of control can affect the way people look at me. If someone post something of me and it ended up being up there permanent i wouldn’t have control over it because i didn’t post and also it’s up there forever.

  • What are two ways that you can actively manage and protect your identity and your reputation online? (one of each) i can follow the terms and policies and safety options to keep someone from hacking me or something like that.

  • Answer the question: “Does the Internet have rules?” Use at least one specific example. I don’t think the internet has rules, because you can search anything you want and it’ll come up. I think social media sites have rules though.

  • Define cyberbullying in your own words. Cyberbullying is bullying online on social media or something.Describe at least 2 kinds of cyberbullying and why they are considered cyberbullying.  If you’re  being mean or hurting someone’s or threatening someone you’re cyberbullying. It’s considered bullying because the mean thing the person does the other person might have lack of control of what’s going on. So rumors, gossip, and teasing is bullying.

  • Provide advice for: victims, bullies and bystanders of cyberbullying. If someone is bullying you you should try to ignore but if it gets out of hand you should go get help from an adult or go to an antibullying program where you can talk about what’s going on so they can help prevent you from getting bullied again.

  • Your Top 5 tips for using the Internet 1. Have your Safety search on 2. Don’t use it to bully someone. 3. Be careful of what you post. 4. Don’t post anything on social media that you will regret posting 5. Only share with people that you feel comfortable sharing with.

  • An explanation of how the Internet has changed communication. Make sure to use at least one specific example.

  • Internet has changed communication in a way to make it much easier, but also much more complicated. Causing people to text and drive or pay attention to their device more than their job, school or family.

Slide 2

  • Define Immediacy, Permanence and Lack of Control as they pertain to the Internet.

  • Immediacy means that once you post something it’s immediately out there and everyone has it.

  • Lack of Control means something you post on the internet is in someone or something else's control and you can’t make changes to it.

  • Permanency means that once you post something it’s out there and you can’t take it back.

Slide 3

  • An explanation of how Immediacy, Permanence and Lack of Control affect both our offline and our online identities and lives. Include at least one example.

  • Immediacy controls our online life by something being posted out there spreading fast, it controls our offline life by people knowing what you’ve said and either gratifying you or shaming you about what you posted. An example of this is: Someone posts a picture of themselves saying they are pretty/handsome and bully them by saying that they are egotistical or self centered.

  • Permanence controls our online life by something being posted and being out there forever, it controls our offline life by people bullying/gratifying the person for posting what they posted. An example of this is: Someone posts a picture of their dog and people may comment “Your dog is so cute” you would than be gratified by something that you posted

  • Lack of control controls our online life by something you post on the internet is in someone or something else's control and you can’t make changes to it, it controls our offline life by someone maybe having your post and they can do whatever they want with it. An example of this is: You post a picture of yourself in a bathing suit and someone takes it and photoshops it, or spread it around and humiliate you

Slide 4

  • What are two ways that you can actively manage and protect your identity and your reputation online? (one of each)

  • 1. The first way to protect your identity is to be cautious about what you post and who sees it.

  • 2. The second way to protect your identity is to be very careful of what you post, it could very easily ruin your reputation.

Slide 5

  • Answer the question: “Does the Internet have rules?” Use at least one specific example.

  • I believe the Internet does have rules because you can’t do whatever you want to do on it, there are laws, you can be arrested very easily if you do the wrong things on the Internet. An example of this is: You lie about someone and their personal information in a comment on social media, tarnishing the person’s reputation and committing slander.

Slide 6

  • Define cyberbullying in your own words.

  • Cyber Bullying is harassment over social media or on electronic bullying

Slide 7

http://www.cio.com/article/3012772/social-networking/top-10-social-media-misfires-of-2015.html#slide6

Gerry Hamilton posted a tweet about 29th ranked football recruit Roquan Smith and put a link in the tweet about him committing to Texas A&M. The link was supposed to be a highlight of him playing football, but instead it was a link to pornographic material. Gerry tried to delete the link but people started screenshotting the post before it was offline.

Lack of control is in this because he did not double check his link and made a big mistake. Imediency plays into this because as soon as he posted it people started screenshotting. Its permanent because screenshots.

This women dressed up as a victim of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings on Halloween before going to work and shared it on Twitter, revealing it to the world.Trying to make fun of the event leading to so many deaths, this is a guaranteed way to lose a job.

This women’s choice affected individual's life because she made fun of peoples family, when dressing up as a victim of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. This lady could have really gotten hurt for dressing up that. Immediacy played a role in this because this lady just reminded the people family’s death and how tragic it was. Permanence played a role in this because that post will always be on the internet somewhere and can not be taken down. Lack of control played into the story because when she posted this it may not be able to be taken down.
