In many different ways can earth systems be affected by each other. The best example of this is the rain cycle, which shows what happens when the biosphere interacts with the hydrosphere. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? I think by you knowing particular pieces of knowledge about a natural disaster you might be able to keep yourself safe. For example, knowing how to detect when something like a hurricane or a tornado is coming. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? Many things are damaging the earth right now but I feel like the increase in gas products releasing unwanted gasses into the air is something we should stop or try to do. Your reaction to your findings and overall project Overall I am not too shocked being as though I knew things about the topic. I am a little caught off guard by some of the damage earthquakes do.

Daniel - Earthquakes

How do the earth systems affect each other?

In an earthquake the geosphere effects every other sphere pretty negatively. Earthquakes are often quite destructive and powerful. Not only that but they are completely unpredictable and can be from huge to tiny in a matter of seconds only making them more and more dangerous. They are most definitely the most dangerous of the natural disasters.

How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters?

Even with the knowledge of how the spheres work theres nothing we can do to stop or predict an earthquake in any way. Their unpredictability and the fact that they show up at large scales whenever they want without warning only makes them even more dangerous. Most other natural disasters can be either prevented or can be protected against but earthquakes cannot be foreseen there for they cannot be prevented or protected against.

What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future?

We can make our buildings more stable in order to stop them from falling down when an Earthquake does happen but thats all we really can do. Once again their unpredictability and the strength of them alone put them at the top of the charts for most dangerous natural disaster.

My reactions to my findings and overall project

My findings definitely surprised me before I went in depth and researched the topic i believed that earthquakes werent that dangerous but after seeing the sheer damage they can do and once again their unpredictable essence i have now realized how truly dangerous and terrifying they are. As for the project I thought it was kind if fun it was interesting to research this topic

Sade Hayes Volcanoes

  1. How do the earth systems affect each other?

Volcanoes are formed when tectonic plates are pushed under one another. When water seeps into these rocks and squeezes them, magma is created, thus the geosphere and the hydrosphere interacting. When magma collects deep inside the volcano in what is known as the “magma chamber,” pressure builds and eventually forces its way to the stop causing the eruption. When the volcano erupts, volcanic matter and debris is put into the air and can cause climate damage and can make the air unsafe for humans and animals. If the eruption is bad enough, it can force humans and animals out of their homes and they may also be hurt or killed.

  1. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters?

Understanding what causes volcanic eruptions, where they are likely to occur, and how to avoid them can help in handling this natural disaster because it can save lives and help educate those who are unaware of the affects of volcanic eruptions other than what is commonly known.

  1. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future?

In order to create a sustainable future, volcanic eruption trainings as well as trainings for other natural disasters should be taught in every school, not just those who are at risk of these eruptions, so that there is a lesser chance that people are harmed.

Growing up watching nature shows and learning about volcanoes in middle school I was not very surprised about my findings. I was aware of the hazardous matter that is emitted into the air when volcanoes erupt and that volcanic eruptions happen in places called “hot spots.” However, I was surprised to find that volcanic eruptions can cause other natural disasters such as wildfires and floods, further causing mass destruction and homelessness to humans and animals native to the area.

De'Ja Powell,Tsunami's

  1. How do the earth’s systems affect each other? A tsunami can modify the terrain and have an impact on other Earth systems. It disrupts wildlife habitats, including bird nesting grounds, by disturbing trees and plants. If harmful chemicals are washed into the water and poison the marine life, land creatures drown and aquatic species die from pollution. When an earthquake occurs underwater, it can lead to the formation of tsunamis and other natural calamities. These tsunamis can then wipe out portions of the biosphere, including plants, people, and land animals, by dragging them back into the ocean after drowning them in water.

  2. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? Knowledge of environmental science aids us in coping with natural disasters like tsunamis since it enables us to comprehend how the Earth and its systems work as well as the reasons behind these events. Based on that, we may decide what to do in certain circumstances. It can better prepare them by educating them about what they are precisely dealing with and, more importantly, how to get ready for it if they cannot prevent it. Other tsunami prevention and mitigation measures place a strong emphasis on thoughtful land use designing and constructing construction in tsunami hazard zones. enhancing exit points. building evacuation structures for tsunamis. restricting the amount of new construction in tsunami-prone locations.

  3. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? There are things we can do to build a sustainable future. decrease the use of plastic by purchasing a hydro flask water bottle in place of a plastic water bottle. Reduce food waste by consuming more plant-based meals. Ride your bike instead of driving your car all the time, and leave no trash behind.

Drought

The atmosphere provides the geosphere with the necessary heat and energy for erosion. In response, the geosphere reflects the sun’s energy back into the atmosphere. The atmosphere provides the biosphere with gas, heat, and sunlight (energy). It pumps water from the hydrosphere.  An understanding of environmental science can aid in handling natural disasters by getting people to understand the cause of natural disasters. Once people understand that, they can understand and learn how to take steps and action to reduce the part they play in creating or inducing these disasters. To create a sustainable future, we can use less electricity and water. We can also, teach others to properly recycle. Learning that drought is also considered water that was already on the land drying out was one of my takeaways. I assumed that the water from a lake or pond would stay there until used. Once I continued to read about the topic I completely understood the process.

Tsunamis

A reflection answering the Essential Questions

How do the earth’s systems affect each other? they all are part of building blocks and connect because their approach towards each other is basically cause and effect.

How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? This Ould potential grows as procedures become more of a household tradition. One thing that families or people need to do is try to help themselves first.

What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? By lowering the things we have done that have caused destruction. We can take away some demands by the public which are causing the problems.

I didn’t really have a big huge reaction to this project but I can say that the destruction done to the paper and sticks by the water is actually accurate. Due to the overflowing water, the objects had no chance for example most tsunamis take things with the tide. I think the water placed its part well.

Earth systems affect each through many different ways. When volcanoes(geosphere) erupt, the molten lava shoots and emits carbon into the atmosphere. The understanding on environmental science allows us to understand why volcanoes erupt and the impact it has on the environment.

Unfortunately we cant do anything to stop volcanoes we just have to stay away from them

Jada-Volcanos

Earths systems tend to come together sometimes for the good and some for the bad, when it comes to volcanos, it’s both. If the Magma were to stay inside the volcano it would not be safe and it would cause damaged to the earth’s crust. On the other hand when magma is flowing out of the volcano and going all over the land it is causing fires, polluting the air, harming life, and even causing droughts. understanding and having the knowledge of environmental science makes a huge difference and can be helpful because you can help educate others and you are also aware of what is going on and know things about it. If we work together we can make an impact on the Earth for the better but we have to change some of what we do. Major things such as polluting the air.

Learning that the volcano not erupting causes more damage than when it does was surprising to me only because I always thought the opposite. Another component that was shocking to me is that volcanos can take up to 1-2 months to even full be at the levels to cause an eruption.

Justyn-Floods

Essential Questions:

The earth’s systems affect each other in all different ways. Specifically, in floods, the hydrosphere affects mostly the Geosphere by tearing through typically un-flooded areas and destroying the area. Sometimes the area gets so bad that they are not back to normal for years. The hydrosphere also affects the biosphere because it causes animals to lose their homes and possibly even die. Floods also affect the hydrosphere because the water floods onto land and overfloods rivers and lakes sometimes.

The understanding of environmental sciences helps us understand how the different earth spheres interact with each other instead of studying it as just a disaster. For example, floods interact with the Hydrosphere obviously because of the water but it also affects the Geosphere in ways you might not think about the same Biosphere.

We could start trying to stop climate change and taking it more seriously because while climate change decreases the frequency of regular floods it largely increases the number of huge floods and makes the floods so much worse.

My reaction to my findings and overall project:

This project was fun and the stuff I found was not that surprising. What did surprise me was the information about global warming which was global warming caused more huge floods and less normal floods. Most of the information I feel was obvious.

Shaniya C - Tornadoes

Earth systems affect each other because when something such as a natural disaster gets worse due to human activities all systems are also affected by it. An understanding of environmental science can aid in handling natural disasters by gathering an understanding of what’s going on and why, and how you can prepare for it, etc. To create a sustainable future we can recycle more, reduce greenhouse gasses by walking, taking public transportation, etc and more.

Suhailah R. - Mudslides

How do the earth systems affect each other?
All of Earth’s systems work with each other, mudslides are an example of this. It starts with the hydrosphere with heavy rainfall which builds up in the ground, the biosphere. Earth systems work hand in hand with different processes and disasters. Without one system, another wouldn’t be able to function fully or properly.

How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling disasters?
Having an understanding of environmental science allows you to know how and why a disaster starts. This knowledge can help prevent a disaster from occurring and how to deal with the disaster and its aftermath.

What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future?
To create a sustainable future the first thing we need to do is educate. Environmental science gives people the background and understanding of why the Earth is in the state that it is today. Us putting in the effort to spread knowledge and being able to listen will put us on the path to a sustainable future.

Overall Reaction: It was interesting to learn about how mudslides start, it was something new I learned. I enjoyed creating a short creative video to go with the information me and my group put together.

Environmental Science_ Mudslide Presentation

Sole sanders landslides, mudslides

  1. How do the earth systems affect each other? Because all earth systems work together when one system happens, it triggers an effect for another thing that happened. It’s like a cycle. Like when mudslides happen, you can create a ripple in effect that can go all way down to the ocean cracking in the ocean floor releases saltwater into freshwater.
  2. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? Understanding the environmental science of natural disasters can help prevent natural disasters, because when you know what to look out for, and the signs of the signals, you could be better prepared, and you can react better to when these natural disasters happen while you cannot prevent natural disasters we can do a better job at helping the Distany, the disasters that comes with it, and already have the resources that are needed to combat the disaster to have less destruction to buildings and properties and less deaths.
  3. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? Efforts we can make a society to create a sustainable future are building structure architectures recycling, saving resources, clean energy, rather than greenhouse, gases, stop over producing food items like meats and dairy products. Try to move everything to electricity rather than gases make better living conditions for the animals that we share the planet with.

Ryan.K Doughty-hurricanes

  1. How do the earth systems affect each other? During hurricanes extreme rain falls and strong winds.tend to occur, thus being an interaction between the atmosphere and hydrosphere.Hurricanes tend to ruin lots of things in the geosphere and biosphere, such as destroying homes, trees, natural resources and many habitats.

  2. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? Having an understanding of enviornmental sciene can help everyone be more prepared before ,during and after these diasters hit,and even fiding ways to limit or prevent these diasters overall.

  3. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? Some efforts I believe we can make to create a sustainable future are, being educated on how these diasters happen, finding ways we can prevent them ,and creating stronger and more “intellegent” techology to keeping us safe when these events occur such as buildings with quality “diaster” proof materials etc.

Kamya (tornado)

The earth’s systems affect each other where the atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and hydrosphere depend on one another for our benefit in life. For example, they overlap and are all also interconnected. Natural disasters are a great example of how the earth’s systems interact with each other as each type of natural disaster impacts one or more of the earth’s systems. Knowing this, safety can be prioritized through any natural disaster as we know what to look for in the earth’s systems to identify danger in climates and shifts in the geosphere. Humans can limit combustion and preserve the only fossil fuels we have left to benefit the atmosphere because it is crucial to how we will continue to live. This project has been easy to complete any kind of interesting as we were able to choose our own natural disaster and partners.

Zaid C-Tornado

The earth systems affect each other in many different ways for example, “Birds(biosphere) fly through the air (atmosphere), and water (hydrosphere) flows through the soil (lithosphere or geosphere). The spheres of the earth are closely connected to each other. A change in one sphere results in a change in two or more spheres.” An understanding of environmental science can aid in handling natural disasters so we know how the earth operates, how its systems work, the reason behind certain natural disasters, and knowing what to do if a natural disasters occured. Three efforts we can make to create a sustainable future is by recycling more, cut down on electricity/less energy, and buying only the things you will use.

Sanaa, Drought

In any circumstance, Earth systems interact with one another. “Volcanoes (geosphere events) may, for example, spew a high quantity of hot lava (geosphere), causing mountain glaciers (hydrosphere) to melt. Mudflows and floods (geosphere) can occur downstream of volcanoes, inundating streamside settlements (biosphere).” So earth systems are using the domino affect. Once one is affected they all are.Understanding environmental science in handling natural disasters is important because It can help us learn why they happen and also what is happening. The efforts we can make to create a sustainable future is by recycling, using less electric and buying the organic version of whatever you’re using if you can.

a. How do the earth’s systems affect each other?

When it comes to the earth’s systems affecting each other during a mudslide the geosphere is the most affected. The vibrations from a mudslide shift the surface of the ground and disrupt the slope in the ground.

b. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters?

The understanding of environmental science can help us prepare for natural disasters, help us repair what was destroyed in the land, and also help us know why the natural disaster occurred. Environmental science also helps us learn how human interactions affect the earth as a whole.

c. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future?

In terms of prevention of mudslides we can stop construction and fracking that disrupts the earth’s ground and slope to prevent any major movement in the group and soils.

d. Your reaction to your findings and overall project

I wasn’t shocked about what I learned, but I was more intrigued about what I learned about mudslides, especially how fast they happen. I was a little bit surprised at the effect mudslides have on the environment, such as disruption of homes, forests, etc.

Treymir Tornado Natural Disaster

  1. When a severe thunderstorm happens, (rotating supercell), it could potentially cause a flood. (hydrosphere) Humid air rises through the atmosphere into the thunderclouds, and the cool air and heavy rain starts rotating causing a tornado. If a tornado extends, it could be a hazard to the biosphere.
  2. Having an understanding of environmental science can help have an idea on what can be effected from a natural disaster.
  3. There isn’t much we can do considering the fact that severe storms causes tornados. That can’t really be prevented.

Overall, I enjoyed working on this project. It was well structured, and we all did a fair amount of work. I never knew exactly what caused a tornado so that was interesting to find out.

  1. How do the earth’s systems affect each other?

the earth’s systems affect each other in many ways because the earth has four subsystems they are called, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and geosphere, these subsystems interact with each other and the biosphere, and they work together to influence the climate of the piles of earth.

  1. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters?

I will teach us how to avoid and handle natural disasters because If something bad happens to one it probably affects another one in a bad way understanding environmental science aid can help us avoid natural disasters and how we can stop them.

  1. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future?

avoided everything that cost natural disasters and be careful about what we do so we don’t cost a natural disasters
