For my capstone project I worked closely with Jasmine to create A Boss Brunch. This project was very tedious and took lots of time and patience to execute. We worked on this project throughout the school year and when the time finally came it was such a huge relief. We reached out to some well known brands in Philly and they came to support us and give inspirational speeches. Throughout this project I learned how to network, build, and be open to different ideas and opinions. I learned more about peoples work ethics and how not everyone is going to work at the same pace as you or even put in the same amount of effort as you. This project built me as a person and it built my brand. One of the young entrepreneurs that attended the pop-up shop has also seen a recent spike in his sales, one has decided to go to the art museum and promote his brand, and all of the others have continuously reached out after the pop up shop with business opportunites for all of the other brands.

I, along with two other students, Hanan Daher and Samadi Bryan have spent the past months creating a podcast called ‘GEN Z: Let’s Increase Visibility’ discussing social issues affecting us and many others. This podcast has been sponsored by America’s Promise Alliance. Our goal for this podcast was to inspire others in our community to talk about the world around us. We wanted to both educate and inspire intellectual conversations amongst our peers about social issues today. By understanding these social issues, we can know how to be better allies toward others in our community and work to build a better society. In our podcast, we speak on topics of racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.

For my capstone, I wrote this year’s SLA Beeber theater production!! It was a play entitled A How-to Guide for the Haunting and the Haunted, written by me and directed by the lovely Ms. Hare. I was involved in many aspects of it, from (of course) writing the script to casting to designing the set. I even acted in it!! It was an absolutely glorious experience and I am so very glad I got to have the opportunity.

I created a pastry business two years ago and named it Sweet Essence, this was the start of a great new life for me. Ever since that day I have been working to make my business flourish, create a larger clientele, and work at my skill. ver the past few years I was able to unfold my talent and create s many new things without guidance. With this being said I chose to do an internship with a professional baker in hopes of expanding my education from a different perspective, and better my skill. The woman I chose has been in this business for 10 years, she has a business called Jazzy B’s Cookies Cakes & Candies. While working with her I did lots of hands-on learning by helping her with her big orders and watching her complete them. We also talked about the different strategies best to use when running this type of business which helped me a lot. Towards the end f the internship, she asked me to design a cake, and then she’d guide me through making it. At the end of this internship, I was able to gain a new friendship, an entirely new skill set, and even more knowledge.

My name is Maiya Mangum and I am a senior at Science Leadership Academy at Beeber. I want to help make Science Leadership Academy at Beeber more sustainable by trying to create compost and educating others about composting. My capstone question is, How can teaching about composting and having a compost system help SLA Beeber and the environment? I think the project can benefit the community because Earth is our home and we need it to survive. It will benefit the community because I see a lot of trash being left behind by students. Having compost is another way to get rid of the trash but it goes into the soil and brings nutrients to the Earth. Educating students about composting will serve the community because it can inspire people to create their own compost or a way to make people aware of contributing positively to the environment. In this capstone project, I am most proud of my partner and my quick adaptation to the challenges we faced. We were able to produce a compost system that can be modified for years to come for seniors who are interested in making a school compost. I learned that I was able to adapt to the changes although it was stressful at times. Not knowing what direction your project is going to take or what your next steps will be was stressful. Although, I realized the essence of the capstone project is to experiment and mistakes will be made along the way which is a part of the process.

pollution

We chose to undertake a project on plastic trash and pollution because we believe it is a subject that needs to be addressed. We want to raise awareness about how often people throw bottles trash without even realizing it. I think I did a good job writing the Commercial speech; nevertheless, I wish I had done more study on the topic.

What knowledge can we provide to entrepreneurs that will help them improve their business skills? What methods can we use to bring young entrepreneurs together and encourage them to collaborate? Two of my classmates and I, both of whom own businesses, sponsored a “Boss Brunch” in Merion Botanical Park, where we met merchants interested in marketing, networking, and socializing with other young entrepreneurs.Finding a venue for the event, as well as suppliers, speakers, a caterer, and park permission. We charged a $25 selling fee and used the money to buy tables, chairs, decorations, and other essentials. Providing food and beverages, allowing each business to set up shop and sell their items, and gaining support from a few successful firms we met through social media and personal ties.At our boss brunch, there was also a photographer who documented all of the noteworthy moments. Even the most successful people have been where I am now, I’ve realized. Everyone left the brunch supporting new businesses they hadn’t heard of before, swapping social media handles, and forging connections that will remain far after the brunch. Bringing the young entrepreneur community together and allowing them to connect with one another is the most effective strategy to support them since you can relate to a group of individuals who are similar to you and can help each other uplift and support one another.

For my capstone project, I worked with Umme to research the issues that children face, especially the ones who need to carry oxygen cylinders on daily basis. We planned to make a flexible oxygen cylinder holder that can sense children’s movement so that they don’t always need to be assisted by an adult. However, the process wasn’t very easy as we started working on it, due to not having enough resources. Considering the research and also the accessibility to resources, we had to change our initial plan. We ended up making a car seat belt for the oxygen cylinder that can be used while traveling; it will secure the cylinder well, preventing it from possible accidental drips. After making our product, we presented our project as a proposal to the organization that funded us. Our main goal was to spread awareness on this issue which barely gets spoken about in our community so that people who are in power can take a step toward changing the issue. It was a different and unique experience for both of us. We have learned to think critically about the people and give back to the community that we are in. We noticed how difficult a task could be even though it may seem an easy task to do at first. Lastly, we have to acknowledge not to be afraid to change our plan if things don’t work out the way we wanted to be.

I completed my capstone project, and as part of it, I photographed gentrification in several places. Within the images, you can examine the underlying meanings of things such as how everything is being swept away and we are starting over, which may be beneficial to some but harmful to others. In today’s society, we are okay with removing history and replacing it with new items in order to meet an aesthetic, which is absurd because neighborhood standards have shifted dramatically, both physically and financially. We should start looking about and paying attention to our surroundings since things in our communities change in the blink of an eye.

In my Capstone, I worked with Idris. Our goal was to create a watered-powered go-kart at first, but we changed it to a solar-powered electric go-kart. I originally chose this idea on my own and we eventually teamed up to complete it. I chose this because a go-kart has been done in my school, but it was electric and we wanted to try a different approach. In the process of making our go-kart, we first had to learn about how cars work and basically a lot about what does what in a vehicle. We took a lot of knowledge from articles and videos teaching us about how to make a go-kart and how it works. These videos also taught us about what’s the cheapest route and ways to make it easier on ourselves because our first goal was to make a water-powered go-kart, but that’s way too hard and it was expensive. The engine we needed started at 10,000 dollars and making the engine would’ve taken too much time out of us. Our product, which is the go-kart is fully functional and solar-powered, so it will never die and charges itself. We learned a lot about this project. It was more of a journey. A lot of weeks went by, where we were stuck in the same stage, but go through it. We learned time management and other things that can help us in the future and I’m proud that we finished it.

Rebuilding SLA Beeber's PSU Chapter

Philadelphia student union has been a great resource for young adults interested in social justice. Throughout my senior year, I have been working on rebuilding the Beeber chapter. We have built a wonderful archive with PSU from our police free campaign which included three SLA Beeber students, to our continuous fight with the School district of Philadelphia about over-policing. Choosing to amplify PSU’s presence in our school is the best way I could serve my community. By doing this project I will amplify a great learning space and outlet for young people. I will also be ensuring the community of this resource that has been helping many young people at SLA. Allowing this space to grow will be very influential in the way young people at SLA lead in their everyday lives outside of school. This will help the SLA community by giving students an additional community outside of the one they have with their peers and teachers. This will also be a great way for them to get involved in issues that are impacting their neighborhoods, city, or personal identity.

My capstone is essentially a photo gallery that focuses mainly on the Mazda MX-5 Miata, a front engine, rear wheel drive roadster that, ever since its introduction in 1989, had cemented itself as the world’s best selling sports car. This slideshow project focuses itself as a gallery. It begins with outsourced photos, but most of the photos that come out of the photo gallery are photos that I took myself. This process is cumulative of multiple plans that I initially had, but in the end I ultimately found one that still tapped into my own personal interests, given the fact that my own first car is a Miata (and is featured in this project) and I have personally done a lot of research on these cars even before this project had been initiated. The end result is a photo gallery, one that consists of legacy photos from the car’s initial development, the 1989 reveal of the car, old advertisements that I found in the meantime, and ultimately a series of photos that basically exhibit my own personal Miata on the road. In the meantime, I also took the time to basically exhibit captions to accompany the photos with this project, giving some context to the photos being presented as a result of doing so. It was also cool to do so, because in the process, even amid all the personal research I have done with the car, it was cool to see how unlikely of an origin story a Japanese-built car had.

For my capstone project, I’ve decided to make letters to the freshman of next year in a welcome way and give them resources to inform them about mental health. I think providing first-year students with access to websites with strategies to get on top of school work and to stay healthy. Health is affected by sleep and food choices like stressing the importance of breakfast. The kind of health which is overlooked by many, especially students. Having somewhat of a jump start to better habits is very important to me. I want to make people feel welcomed and enforce healthy strategies for their health physically and mentally. Originally I wanted to make care packages to inform people about mental health to anyone. Making those care packages though was a lot more time-consuming but especially more expensive. I got the idea from my advisor to switch to making a letter. Inside the letters, I would have QR codes to a website that holds the information! Instead of just having a website I thought receiving custom letters with unique art and stickers in them would be a lot more fun and incentivize to check out the website. After I got the final draft down the actual process of making the letters was thankfully straightforward. I made 22 for Mr. Cunha’s advisory next year. As I got a gift when I came to SLAB I think this would count as bringing things full circle in a way. It came out great.

Navid and I collaborated on my capstone project. We conducted a music history lesson at SLA Middle School. We aimed to assist the community by spreading the gift of music. Music is all around us, whether we recognize it or not. I want today’s and future generations to understand how music helps us cope with difficult situations. If you pay attention as you go about it, you will notice it more and more. Elevators, coffee shops, clothes stores, and other venues are examples of more frequent everyday settings. Music helps us bond by allowing us to share a common interest or show another person something new. Many individuals are interested in producing music as a pastime or simply for fun, so we helped our students locate new music and spread it out, which also will inspire them to do the same with others. After the project, I walked away with fresh insights about myself and new experiences. I had a good time with them and am pleased with the improvements I achieved. The most important thing I learned was that teaching is a difficult career requiring patience and attention.

During the 2021-2022 school year we had the task to create our senior project for the year. From the beginning I had a wrong plan which was to do some sort of community work. Or to help others. My project has had its ups and downs but I can say I stuck out to create something very different and thoughtful. For my project on elf my fist plans was to do a homeless food drive but I knew that that was something that many individuals do. My next project was fixing an out group by the name of a biyb to help encourage young women to be better. As time when on things changed and me and my partner went different way. Finally I choose to work by myself and to go to a women’s shelter and spend the day with them talking and making cake. More so I hosted a baking class for the individuals. It was so fun.The idea that I pulled off working by myself is something that I am extremely proud of, but I knew that I had in me. This project has to be one of my favorites by far of the entire year.. Overall I’m glad that the school year is over and I’m happy to have created such a thoughtful project that I will continue to talk about i hope you guys enjoyed and one day will look at my project as a example to show future students and peers..love anyah see you guys soon lol.

Lucas Drinen - Composting Capstone

Abstract

Our capstone project focused on how we as individuals and communities can less our carbon footprint and environmental burden. SLA Beeber, like many other high schools, produces an astronomical amount of food waste. Food waste makes up a significant percentage of waste in landfills. We decided to combat this by implementing a compost system. We met with Ms. Sasso to formulate a plan for this project. Our plans changed drastically over the past few months. At first, we planned to acquire funding to purchase proper compost bins and distribute the compost at the end of the year. Unfortunately, we could not secure the necessary funding and had to create our own 0010 makeshift bins. These bins are located in Ms. Sasso’s and Mr. Kucewicz’s rooms. They are equipped with informative signs (on what is compostable), and mini-compostable trash bags. Once filled, the content of the bins is disposed to the compost tumbler outside. We also were not able to distribute the compost due to weather-related issues. Even though we could not produce any compost, our project resulted in a fully functioning compost system with a guide for future staff and students. Now that we have laid out the framework, all the SLA Beeber community needs to do is follow in our footsteps. Throughout the process of this project we learned more about how our school community functions, and the various ways that we as students can make a lasting impact.

Digitized Project:

Two slide presentations (a guide, and show and tell) serve as the digitized version of our project. Our full presentation is embedded at the bottom as well. They contain all of the pictures and videos taken.

If you are interested in composting at SLA Beeber, take a look at the slides below!

For my capstone, my partner Jadyn and I decided to do a Talent Show. We were advocating for this talent show to happen because these past couple of years of living in a pandemic have been challenging for many of us all. I’m sure many are still trying to process everything that has occurred along with dealing with grief & loss. We believe that having this talent show will be refreshing, promote positive school spirit, uplift & support one another, and bring many together socially again. We can’t erase the past as we know but we can do our best to move forward and begin to enjoy life again. This is also our last year at SLA so we thought why not leave on a fun positive note and do something that would benefit the school in a positive way. In doing this capstone we ran into some challenges because although covid has gotten better we are still enduring some complications hence having the talent show. Throughout this process, one of our complications was trying to find a date to have our talent show. After the many complications of finding a date because of covid, we decided that doing this talent show we had to change some things around making this talent show an unusual one. So we turned our show into a virtual talent show allowing students to turn in videos of their talent and we turned those videos into one big video.

Hello, my name is Jasmine Douglass, and for my capstone project, I did a website called Youth Growth. The website is meant to help the people who just graduated high school and going into the next chapter of their lives. I created it because after high school I knew what I had to do but not how to get there. I wanted someone to help me but not one person could help me with everything I needed. I also found out that many other people had the same problems as me they needed a little help to get where they needed to be, so YoutheGrowth came to be. The website won’t help them step by step but it will give enough information to get through it all without stressing out. It is meant to be a quick tip page so that they don’t spend all of their time reading one tip. It is meant for quick tips and ways to help them if needed. I do believe this will be effective for most but not all because this isn’t meant for everyone.
