Reproductive Healthcare w/ L.A.D. News!

Posted by David Wilson in Anatomy and Physiology · Aziz · E on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 8:11 pm

In my group’s video, w/ Amin and Lamont, we decided to interview my Uncle who was the Vice President of Operations at Robert Wood Johnson Barnabus Health System. In our interview, we go over the importance of Planned Parenthood, the importance of it being available, and the importance of who is controlling it, plus more.

I chose this topic because I was pulled into it after being late to class, but agreed to it because I felt that the injustice of repealing Planned Parenthood just seemed much too unrealistically evil at the time when I heard about it. It pulled a heartstring I didn’t know was there.

In the project, I’m pretty sure I contributed a good one-third of a pie, especially towards the end. I know that I helped out with the first checkpoint, didn’t do the questions in checkpoint two, but lastly did edit the video at the end and conduct the interview, which was pretty heavy on its own. In doing things differently, I could’ve just been more responsible in my timing in getting everything done.

  1. The factors that affect public health are the politicians that sell it and the local hospitals and offices that inform people of the best health options and spread their info to news stations to inform the public, furthermore.

  2. Economy, being money and trade, influences how much people are willing to invest in their health so long as it doesn’t make them go broke, politics influence the public’s will with arguments that only provide money from being heard but not any actual helpful effects for the people affected by them, and half of society just tries to wrap their finger around the problem and promote solutions to these problems that help those affected by said problems for the low cost of free thought and better health rather than money that doesn’t even go to them in the long run.

  3. The process of research is strenuous to get into and it takes a very long time before you may reach any executive anywhere for help. It almost felt unheard of in my group’s research.

  4. One profession pertaining to public health in anatomy and physiology would be, Vice President of Operations inside a hospital. Others would be Pharmacists, Dental Hygienists, Chiropractors, R.N.’s, Biomedical Laser Technicians, Neurophysiological Technologists… etc.

The video will be up soon, it’s just processing.

Reflection
-----------
Unit 1: In this unit, I have learned about natural systems and how they are sustained throughout the world. Along the way, I developed a better sense of how different systems bounce off of each other and require different inputs of energy to maintain consistency and health in all systems involved. Specifically, this is in Earth Systems and how each system affects each other and requires the assistance of one another to thrive, like how the biosphere needs the hydrosphere as a source of energy and how the geosphere needs the hydrosphere to stay strong and sustainable for all organisms in the biosphere. Over vast periods of time, these spheres work together to improve upon each other but have diminshed from human inputs.

Unit 2: In this unit, I gained a clear view of what environmental justice is, and how it is centered around defending the environment because of how it affects us in the short/long run and all animals involved. It is about how one group's carelessness in one part of the world will immediately affect another group all the way across the world and will eventually strike them even harder. Humans in particular have a knack of using resources carelessly and refusing to put up efforts to restore such resources. In doing this, many areas across the globe become less sustainable and lose the proper nutrients needed to sustain life there. Ultimately, systems change over time because of the human inputs that affect them and how the each sphere interacts them in response, and finally how each sphere is, once again, diminished and destroyed.

Air Pollution Parody: "Anaiah on the Street!"

Posted by David Wilson in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 8:56 pm

Our video is a PSA made into a “Billy on the Street!” parody where we run around to people in our school and question them on various subjects surrounding the air quality in Philadelphia and how people are affected by it. I think air pollution affects the most in any given area in the city than any other form of pollution so I thought “Why not make the PSA on a relevant topic that is relatable to the people affected by it?” Plus, out of the topics available, we chose air pollution because we were most knowledgeable about that in comparison to other environmental justice issues.

I contributed to the group by helping out with filming and recording some few scenes shot in the video. In addition to that, I made some few of the questions for the recording that were asked on video. I was more of an assistant to the head of the group because I am very inexperienced in video editing and in film direction.

I saw that I did well in filming when I was learning how to keep the camera steady more than anywhere else. After watching the video, I saw that the way I said certain things could have been better and how I approached people could have been more relaxed and comfortable as well. During the video, I tried greatly not to be bland but accidentally was awkward and uncomfortable to watch in some places.

The most meaningful part of creating the PSA was learning more about video editing while giving the message of the problems that Philadelphia currently faces with environmental issues. Video editing is an interest of mine that I always liked but never got into while I feel strongly that any environmental issue should be addressed sooner than later since they affect us later on, so this project really brought those things together.

Test Painting: Watercolor Road

Posted by David Wilson in ART ADV - Hertz - b2 on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 1:39 pm
Watercolor
Watercolor
1) Describe your project.

My project is basically a watercolor painting of what was supposed to be a road with a tree on one side and a river on the next. There are different values in different parts of the painting because I had to finish it up faster than I wanted to.

2) What did you learn while completing this project?

I learned that doing Watercolor is hard in itself, and requires precision and much experience to make something "okay".

3) What was the hardest part about completing this project?

The hardest part of completing this project was making values across the paper without making it pucker up all over the place, which happened anyway.

4) What was the most fun/exciting part?

The only exciting parts were experimenting with Watercolor for, notably, the first time, and creating values that were meaningful to me (I tried to be patient in doing these specifically).

5) If you were to do this project over again, what would you do differently?

I would be more decisive, quick, and even more experimental.

Fun fact of the day: Lillies are lethal to cats. Interesting.

Surreal Slime Dream

Posted by David Wilson in ART ADV - Hertz - b2 on Friday, April 10, 2015 at 9:07 am

This Project was an achievement for me as it was my first time painting and it included something from a mission in a game called First Time Together, and the boss of the mission was a Slime. The slime I guess represents me in a dream on a plane staring at the sky, which is supposed to be Surrealism right? Anyways, here's my reflection. Peace.

  1. Describe your project
My project is pretty much just a small, purple slime (with one black string with a purple ball on its end sticking out of the top of the slime) staring up at the blue-sprayed clouds.

  2. What knowledge did you already have about the project before you started?

I knew about how to take care of acrylic paint and painting materials, as well as what they’re made of and how best to use them in techniques.

  3. What new skill did you want to learn coming into the project?

I wanted to learn about how exactly acrylic paint works. What I was looking for was some experimentation and experience to accompany the previous knowledge that i’d looked up.

  4. Did you accomplish this goal?

    Yes.

  5. How do you know you accomplished the goal? If you didn’t accomplish the goal, why do you think that is?

I know I accomplished this goal because I was able to experiment with different tones and shades and apply them on different plates. In my blog post i’ll show you what I came up with in the end, well before it all got swirled. Still looks pretty cool.

  6. What other skill(s) did you learn along the way?

I learned about making different shades, and painting small areas. Making shades requires that you have space for making different variations and occasionally going over the variation line to refill certain shades. Painting small areas really depends on the look that is wished to be gained, which can be gained with different size brushes, and applying water to different areas.

  7. What are you most proud of in this project?

I’m most proud of the painting in itself. The Slime could have came out better, but the blue painted sky, the blue and white mixed clouds that don’t look the same from each other, and the greenish-yellowish grass are beautiful to me. On top of that, I finished my entire project in one day, and was able to get my work done on time, which was truly a miracle for my schedule.

  8. What would you do differently if you had to do the project over again?

I would have done it sooner.

One Sweet Crystal

Posted by David Wilson in ART ADV - Hertz - b2 on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at 5:25 pm
Art Project #2
Art Project #2
For my project, I drew a Crystal, or what was supposed to be a crystal... At the time that I had drawn this, I didn't realize that Crystals are straighter than I made mine, but I think that's a plus. My project's medium was a standard pencil and a few sketching pencils. My inspiration for drawing this was a time where I reflected on me as a person, and realized that a Crystal was something that could have represented me. Out of my newfound love for Crystals, I decided to draw one.

With that, here is my reflection:
  1. Describe your project
My project was a visualization of my thought of what a crystal looked like, which was initially supposed to be representation of my heart and personality that eventually became a procrastinated piece of uncertainty and struggle that reflected life at the time.

  2. What knowledge did you already have about the project before you started?
In terms of my medium, I’d known nothing and done nothing about painting. The most I could say was finger painting, but that’s it. In terms of what my project was, which was a Crystal, I have to say that I had known almost nothing about them and how they actually were. I have to credit Lamont (partially)  to the completion of my project for explaining the ins and outs of crystals (get it?) so that I could shade it well when I drew it.

  3. What new skill did you want to learn coming into the project?
I wanted to learn about tints and shades and about different the different types of brushes used in painting.

  4. Did you accomplish this goal?
I got a 50 out of 100. I never painted to learn about tints and shades but my research beforehand did help me learn about the types of brushes used in painting.

  5. How do you know you accomplished the goal? If you didn’t accomplish the goal, why do you think that is?
I know I accomplished the goal because I know what types of brushes Nigeria used while painting. I didn’t accomplish the goal of tints and shades because I never painted to experience them and how to really use them and know when to use them.

  6. What other skill(s) did you learn along the way?
I learned about how Crystals are made, shaped, grow, reflect light off of them, and are shaded.

  7. What are you most proud of in this project?
I’m most proud of the shape of my crystal. Although it contrasts from how crystals are actually shaped, it still impresses me and I think it looks pretty cool, regardless of critics views.

  8. What would you do differently if you had to do the project over again?

I would choose something entirely different, whereas crystals were just too much. I actually did look up crystals at home besides the proposal, the research and in class, and frankly, they suck to draw, so much. I really wish I’d just chose something else to draw ‘cause that was hell trying to understand.

The Silent, Peaceful, and Vivid Tree

(Sorry 'bout the picture. :( )
For my project, I didn't know what to draw until about week before the project was due. I'd tried constantly to draw but it really didn't work out well. So, on the Tuesday that was down the week from the due date, I sat in class in and I wondered, "how can I draw a tree?". It was then that I realized something very  important that I'd forgotten.

"What is art, if you don't like it?"

It was then that I picked up a pencil and started drawing my first draft. My medium here was a simple .3 lead pencil and some color pencils. I'm not going to go into all my drafts but let's say I had about five attempts, and three drafts. I did go through a period of experimentation, where I used a draft meant to be experimented on before I carried on to my final draft, which definitely helped.

I loved this drawing because it wasn't something that I forced myself to do. It was brought to life with pure imagination, attitude, love (of course) and intent to create. Really, art is something that is never perfect, but only if you believe it is. It is something that requires love, thought, consideration, pride, will, and life. It needs to be something that you love, and not others, otherwise, it's not art. Cuz' after all, "What is art, if you don't like it?"

For my project, I wanted to place light bulbs all around my half pipe to spice it up and give it flavor. SO, The reason why everything is placed as it is, is because I was having trouble visualizing this (at the start). The colors that it has are the way they are was to give it a bit of happiness than dullness.
