Mercedez Smith: Capstone

Posted by Mercedez Smith in Senior Capstone · Epps · ILP/TFI/CAP on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 3:52 pm

My Senior Capstone is a meaningful photography portfolio that brings together components from our community and neighborhood, as well as familiar aspects to the overall students body. By doing this for my capstone project, I will be engaged in a topic of interest, and, mainly, delving into the entrepreneurial aspect of photography as a skill. By the end, I hope to have learned basic knowledge of photography as an art and as a career. This project will enable me to start, if ever, a career in photography. In the beginning of the thinking process,  I was thinking that I would just read and study into photography to write my paper, and put together pictures to show in an exhibit. Now, I now think that maybe a portfolio would be a better representation of myself in my project, because I am not a very outspoken and “out-there” type of person, so getting together what I would need for a large photography exhibit would require certain things that is difficult for me to muster. Pertaining to what I previously said and many of the other hiccups along the way, you can guess that I had many different ideas for my capstone, but what I decided on in this final project really is the best thing I could do for myself - for a capstone, and for my future in photography. Below is the online portfolio that has the same pictures as the physical portfolio.

Green Plague Inc.

My group and I started this benchmark by emailing our client (The wonderful Ms. Reed) to find out her needs in reference to a green design in her classroom. We gathered her ideas and our own in our consultations, and sketched out designs. We went through several designs, and took our measurements. When when our we finalized a design, we made our sketch better and went through several more ideas about plants and green effect. Due to some set backs, we have not completed our building part of the project, but as have our design done, and just need to do a quick installation to the frame and of the plants.

  1. What is your project about? Describe the process you used to accomplish your goals. Look back at the steps you had to take in your checkpoints. Describe your landscape architecture company and what your clients had asked for. How did you accomplish your goals and meet your clients' desire? Hint: Green Design Research

    1. Our project was about making a green design that would benefit the environment and make a teacher’s classroom more eco friendly by implementing our design into their class. In preparation for this project, we looked up 10 green designs. We wrote about them and considered which one was more accomplishable and easy to do. We had many ideas rough drafts of what we wanted to do, but most of them did not come up in the final product due to the cooperation of the product. Although what we did end up making deal with our client that we talked with, Ms. Reed, and we were able to work fondly from there. Our client simply wanted us to make her room more “plant-ful”. We agreed that we wanted it to be seen, get enough sunlight to live, look appealing, not get in the way of the children in the upper side of the classroom, and take up space that isn’t already used. We accomplished all of these. The last one being partial.

  1. What does a plant need to thrive? Describe how the design of your project took into account the needs of the plant you are planting in your design (i.e. water, nutrition, temperature, safety, amount of sunlight).

    1. A plants needs sunlight at the least sunlight to live. They could also have strive on water, but not all plants need that(even though most plants do). Our design was built on the wall board because it wouldn’t get in the way of the students and and it would be getting direct sunlight from where it is in the room. Our plant also doesn’t need much water or any really, so it wouldn’t be a hassle to water it.

  1. Describe what affects a plant's design based on what you have learned from your past assignments.

    1. What affect a plant's design is is if the plant is getting enough sunlight or any. Would it be easy to water or help grow the plant in the design and or placement. The number of resources given to you, plus the number of plants you have. It’s what you’re given that determines the design.

  1. In what ways are the plant's design and the design of your project similar? Think about what affected the overall design of your project and also the development of plants.

    1. The plant's’ design was built by its cells and organs and things inside of its anatomy. While our design did not ‘build itself’, we put together this design, as the plant does for itself.

  2. After doing the Green Design, how do you perceive the relationship between nature and technology? Why? Remember to define nature and technology in your own terms.

    1. Nature is the natural development of plants (and animals) in an ecosystem, and technology refers to man-made objects that were created for one or more purposes. I perceive that nature and technology in most cases live in a symbiotic relationship, giving and taking from one another. Like in our project, our ‘technology’, or project design will give the plant nutrients and space to grow, while the plants gives us improved space quality and reducing carbon dioxide levels.

  1. Overall, what did your group do well in the project? What could your group improve on?

    1. Something our group did really well was the planning for each of the checkpoints we needed to reach. Every time we had a check point to reach, we made a plan of what to do so that we could reach the requirement just in time before it was due. There might have been times where our original plan didn’t work, but when that happened, we made  another one one the spot and followed that one. Our group could have improved on our options. We had many ideas on what to do for the room, but it turned out that we could really only do one of those ideas. This was because we ran into problems like price, placement, time, and inconvenience. We should have worked on how our ideas work.

Viajar Project

Posted by Mercedez Smith in SPANISH 2 - Moran - D on Friday, April 22, 2016 at 2:40 pm
The Travel (Viajar) project was all about picking a Spanish-speaking country, making a brochure, commercial and presentation for travel to that country, as a travel agency.

The project for me was really interesting and kind of fun, learning all about travel and attractions and places to go in the place we chose. My group and I chose Buenos Aires, Argentina.

This is a link to our commercial and our brochure to travel with Amanecer Viajes!

Quarter 3 Poetry Project

Posted by Mercedez Smith in SPANISH 2 - Moran - D on Friday, April 22, 2016 at 2:28 pm
The Quarter 3 poetry project was about researching a famous Spanish poet, choosing one of there poems, then comparing their lives/work to ours and writing our version of the artists poem with the same, more or less, of their themes.

I thought it was most difficult for me to write a poem while staying in the guidelines and including all of the necessary components. Overall, this was one of my favorite project and was the most meaningful to me.

This is my version of the poem "Nocturne"  by Rubén Darío, "Vértigo".

Vértigo

Yo estoy viendo incluso cuando usted no esté allí.

Usted me da vértigo.

¡Insomnio! No poder dormir, y, sin embargo,

soñar. Ser la auto-pieza

de disección espiritual, ¡el auto-Hamlet!

Diluir mi tristeza

en un vino de noche

en el maravilloso cristal de las tinieblas...

Y me digo: ¿a qué hora vendrá el alba?

Se ha cerrado una puerta...

Ha pasado un transeúnte...

Ha dado el reloj trece horas... ¡Si será Ella!...

I thought the benchmark was fun to record and was one of the most enjoyable so far to me.

Tips for Teenagers

By: Jaycob, Mercedez, Cinque, Ryan & Jake

Based on the I-Search papers that we completed on teenage development, here are some tips for teenagers to help them be happier and to help them develop in positive ways.

  1. My tips is that teens should be encouraged enroll in athletics and extracurricular activities, to enhance their social skills and personal identities. Studies show that they can also enhance brain development and physical well-being. It also

  2. helps children learn how to solve problems, identify interests, and work with others.

  1. My tip was to be careful about what groups you join and who you are getting involved with.

  2. Jaycob’s tip; Everything needs to have a balance, meaning that everything you do has to have moderation.

  3. My tip is to be careful with peer pressure. Peer pressure can be both good and bad. Every teenager give into peer pressure at some point in their lives, both good and bad so watch what kind of peer pressure you give into.

Without knowing, the things you say can affect someone dramatically. Most teenagers with certain disorders won’t tell others what they are going through. Think before you say things.

Instagram vs Twitter Infographic

I chose to make my infographic about Instagram vs Twitter because, why not! Some of the most populated social media apps are Instagram & Twitter. I wanted to show that each app has its perks, and its lower percentages. But, in the end, we use them both either way!

Artist Statement

The piece that I am using for my project is a meaningful and artistic. I realize the design for the piece and including the circuits is a little complicated, but it all fit my criteria for what I felt needed to be submitted. I am hoping my project is a success in the end, and that I will get a very respective and kind grade for my efforts.

My artistic and meaningful piece is a hand-made wall flower/wall wreath. It is made up of rolled up book pages to express the love for books and reading. I connected all pieces with hot glue, attached from bottom layer to top, by length. The bottom layer is of longer rolls, and going up and to the center, they got shorter and thinner.

I chose this design because books are meaningful to me. I love reading, and one creative way to incorporate my passion for reading into our Electric Art Project, is to make a piece of art out of what I love. What I mean expresses not only the love for books, but a passion for creativity incorporated into the learning environment.

Cyberbulling is not just a case of hurt feelings anymore. It is something that causes deaths, depression, anxiety, and other things. The worst thing, these are children that are being affected by this. Cyberbullying and regular bullying fall under certain laws that could end in years in prison and fines. It's against the law, save a life, stop bullying.
