For my group’s capstone we decided to make a go kart. In the beginning we struggled with figuring out what the end product would be, we thought about buying an already made kart and disassembling it, or scrapping the idea and building something more like a truck. We bought components for a go kart like a frame and axle and started working out blueprints for a design. We ran into a lot of problems with the frame we bought, a lot of the measurements were not customary and it was a little small. Designing a new frame was the next idea. We used CAD (Computer-Aided Drawing) programs like Autodesk Fusion 360 and Solidworks 2017 to create 3-dimensional blueprints for the kart that can be printed out. This process is/was not easy, you have to make objects in real life in a computer program, this requires seemingly endless measuring, analyzing, and just thinking about every piece of the kart. We assembled the frame in the program, you can see pictures attached here. During this capstone I learned how to more effectively collaborate with a larger team than I’m used to, how to use 3-dimensional design programs, and how to change ideas with a group so everyone is heard.

Ibrahima Bah Capstone project

Posted by Ibrahima Bah in Senior Capstone · Schaar · ILP/TFI/CAP on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 1:17 pm

In my capstone to come up with an idea was difficult at first but after hearing the Sla core values it became really relatively clear to me.The process of getting it to together was especially difficult because i had to find while participants and a date to set up a performance. However;i learned that making and designing a performance is very difficult and every is always subject to change. The overall product that im creating though is a Black Greek style performance called a probate the performance is gonna be done in a presentation and is gonna be preformed by a group of guys in the school.

For my Senior capstone, I want to create and implement a year-long girls soccer practice because I want to make a change in my Sudanese community. This initiative would be a Sudanese girls version of Starfinder, a soccer-based youth development program that I have been part of for the past four years. Playing soccer, and being part of Starfinder has had a big impact on my life, and I would like to pass what I have learned onto other girls in my community. I am a soccer girl and I have been that way for most of my life. However, I am one of the very few Sudanese girls that actively plays soccer all year long. I want more girls to have the same opportunity to play and benefit from the sport the way that I have.
To successfully complete this project, I have the help of my best friend, Razan. She is also a Sudanese American girl who plays soccer for her high school team. My goals for this project are to teach young girls the discipline and life skills that can be learned through soccer, and most importantly, how to have fun! Through this project I realized that it took a number of people to make things happen; to make a change. I also learned that there should be alternatives if something doesn't go the right way. Overall, I feel like I'm close to achieving my goals of teaching my girls how to play soccer.

Epifanio Rios Capstone - Synthesizers

Posted by Epifanio Rios in Senior Capstone · Schaar · ILP/TFI/CAP on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 11:33 pm

Sounds play an important part in many of the things we enjoy. Music, films, television, and even youtube videos use sound as a major component in their media. It is one of the most fundamental parts of entertainment and communication. So inherently I found the subject of sound to be appealing. My desire to understand the fundamentals and facets of sound was a motivating factor. Synthesizers seemed like a logical step since they are like sound boxes. The uses of synthesizers range from music production to movie production as they are used to generate all sorts of sounds and noises. Throughout the year, I developed four fully functioning synthesizers each with its own sound, style, and purpose. Before even beginning to build synthesizers I had spent time researching and learning about sound and the components of a synthesizer itself. Much of my time was also spent testing, designing, and planning synthesizers before construction began.
Through synthesizers, I learned new concepts, skills, and understandings regarding electronics, programming, sound itself, and circuitry. Computer programming is a completely new skill I had to learn and develop throughout this project, the same goes for creating complex circuits. All of these things took time to establish an adeptness for and required a considerable amount of commitment. The ultimate purpose of this project was to weave together a learning experience with a topic I am interested in and eager about to explore sound and new skills.

For my capstone project I decided to use my skills in web design and programming to make a social media website accessible to only SLA students. I got the idea for this project by looking at current websites that serve this function (slabeeber.org blog posts, twitter, instagram, etc.), and noticing that they all have various problems that prevent them from being appealing options to share meaningful content with other students. The blog for example is almost never used aside from teacher’s announcements and mandatory student submissions, and other social media platforms are rarely used for school related purposes. I wanted my website to serve as a middle ground between those two extremes of school related social media. I created the backend of the website using a framework called Express.js along with many plugins, and I created the frontend using HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

Here is a link to the website: http://slabsocial.com

(Note: Only SLA @ Beeber students and faculty will be able to access the majority of the content on the website)

My Capstone is a reflection of my journey through my mental health. I take a look back at my feelings toward school, life, and everything in general. I also reflect on the process that I took to get where I am at today. While doing this project I learned a lot. Not only did I learn a lot about mental health and how to deal with it, but I learned so much about myself as well. I hope you enjoy leaning about my journey just as much as I am grateful for my experiences.

As the year comes to an end I have created a project that is a reflection of myself and my passion for beauty, hair, and makeup. I inspire myself each and everyday to do my best. We are planning on making a Beauty Campaign that showcases that origin does not determine your inner beauty. My team member, William and I plan on furthering our education in the beauty industry. This is something I love to do on my spare time and when I’m at work. The only thing that has changed in my vision about my capstone is the time because the end of the school year is approaching and we needed to hurry up. Will does makeup and I do hair so we both decided to split it up and have a mini photoshoot. We also wanted all of our models to be different races so it could stand out. By doing this I hoped to  not only do I plan to advance in my beauty career but also I plan on being more patient with working with clients and making sure I can do this for the rest of my life. I hope to learn a thing about entrepreneurship and how I can eventually make my own business. I also hope to learn how to be more organized and on time with my work. By the end of this I hope I get to show everyone my talent and how this really means so much to me.

For my senior Capstone this year I really wanted to focus on a skill that I wanted to learn and something that I also thought was important to me. While thinking on my Grandmother's table, I remembered being eight years old helping my Grandmother cut meat and peppers and onions. Then I knew I should make a cookbook with my grandmother. Through out the year I visited my grandma and made these recipes one by one. Most of the time she made me do it myself while she watched and we definitely made each dish more than twice to make sure the recipe's were as accurate as they possibly can be. My grandmother usually doesn't use measurements so it was difficult at first to figure out how much of each ingredient we had to put in. Through this I learned the importance of family, culture, how to make recipes and most of all how to make a delicious flan!

For our capstone, we wanted to create something that everyone will be able to benefit from as well as ourselfs due to this being our last year at Science Leadership Academy at Beeber. We wanted to make our mark on the school that's where my partner and I had come up the idea of creating a small workshop, during lunch that will involve STD and HIV.We also we are going to put our interview  that we took at the clinic center so we are able to show students a good a real-life example of this disease and how important public health is we are also creating a website that we will present to the school so we hope this answer all the questions that anyone may have about this type of diseases. The reason for us to create a website was that we strongly felt as if nobody in this generations doesnt likes to read books anymore so we made it easier since the internet is very useful when getting information across the world.

Science Leadership Academy Middle School Mentorship Program w/Faithe Ben

Posted by Kai Lambert in Senior Capstone · Schaar · ILP/TFI/CAP on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 9:48 pm

Capstone Presentation
This is a 6-month long program meant to reach out to the SLA Middle School students and help them acclimate to the core values and the expectations that come along with going to an SLA school. We would be helping them with social issues that come along with being older and working with other students, which is encouraged by our collaboration value and aiding them with any academic issues they may come across. Essentially, the mentors would be playing a big brother/big sister role and working to help improve relations with the mentees throughout the program. This program will help build ties with our sister school and also teach them how they, too, can help the community around them. I choose to continue this program because I have 3 younger sisters and several cousins, so I am very involved in helping them with troubles they may face in school, with classwork, or with people. I wanted to extend this to kids in the SLA community that had no one else to help them. This program helped to make kids who weren´t comfortable talking to other kids, comfortable and willing to engage with their classmates. This program helped to encourage kids to try their best even if they fail a couple of times before they make it. This program was created to give the rising students of the SLA community a place to go and feel like themselves, to be guided, to be listened to, to create bonds.
