Prescription Drug Abuse PSA - Zack and Emanuel

Posted by Zack Waxler in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 3:22 am
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvtAOegZG0Q

Our video is essentially a breakdown of the common types of prescription drugs that are being abused and how these epidemics came to be/affect the country. We researched the effects of all three major classes of prescription drugs and found out how the government is attempting to handle issues revolving around prescription drugs. For our interview, we talked to a woman who leads an organization that promotes the battle against prescription drug abuse. Honestly I didn’t have a good reason to chose this topic, I just thought it would be an interesting thing to research.

I created the video for this project and wrote some of the script.

I think we did a good job creating the script to inform people about the facts of these drugs instead of just saying “these are bad”. I think we could have asked her more specific questions about the different drugs that we were looking at as we only got general statements about two of the main types.

For me the most meaningful part of the process was getting to interview with someone so passionate about what they believed in.

Zack Waxler Capstone

Posted by Zack Waxler in Senior Capstone · Schaar · ILP/TFI/CAP on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 10:59 pm

For my capstone project I decided to use my skills in web design and programming to make a social media website accessible to only SLA students. I got the idea for this project by looking at current websites that serve this function (slabeeber.org blog posts, twitter, instagram, etc.), and noticing that they all have various problems that prevent them from being appealing options to share meaningful content with other students. The blog for example is almost never used aside from teacher’s announcements and mandatory student submissions, and other social media platforms are rarely used for school related purposes. I wanted my website to serve as a middle ground between those two extremes of school related social media. I created the backend of the website using a framework called Express.js along with many plugins, and I created the frontend using HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

Here is a link to the website: http://slabsocial.com

(Note: Only SLA @ Beeber students and faculty will be able to access the majority of the content on the website)

ALS Nervous System Benchmark

Reflection:

Through doing this benchmark I learned a lot about the nervous system and how diseases like ALS can impact it. I attained a very in-depth understanding of how the body controls movement using a flow of motor neurons in the central nervous system, and I learned why neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS are so serious because of how difficult they are to cure/reverse. I wonder what the cure for ALS will look like when it's finally discovered, and what the cause of ALS is for those who do not inherit it as that has not yet been figured out.

Engineering Class Improvements - Organizing the Back of the Room

Before

The problem with the current situation in the back of the room is that it’s incredibly messy. It’s almost impossible to find anything back there, and it’s really easy for people’s work to get destroyed.

Just look at these pictures:

Plan

There are projects lying on the ground everywhere. Things are just sitting on tables. Some things are in different shelves or in different places from where they are supposed to be. Our job will be to fix this. Here are some ideas we had to fix these problems.

  • Create a group of student to clean up the back of the classroom, either during class or during lunch.

  • Divide the back of the classroom into sections to help organize

    • Supplies

    • Projects

    • 3D Printing

    • Etc.

  • Using the makerspace create shelves or new places for storage throughout the back of the classroom

  • Clean up the boxes in the back of the classroom

After

With our current timeline, we probably won’t be able to finish reorganizing the back of the room. We would probably need around 3 more class periods of every member in our group organizing and cleaning to fully complete this project. We would also need to make the shelves and storage space in the makerspace, which could organize a small team to do during class or at lunch. This should take about 2-3 classroom/lunch days.

Project Summary

For this project we had to learn about a Spanish speaking city and create a presentation based on it. In the presentation, we had to have a brochure, a commercial, and a powerpoint. The city we focused on was Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Reflection

I think we did a really good job on this project, I learned a lot about the country I focused on and I think this was a great project to apply the skills we had learned about during the quarter.

La Poesía Española: Federico Garcia Lorca - Ciudad Sin Sueños

Posted by Zack Waxler in SPANISH 2 - Moran - D on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 8:21 pm
Project Description

For this project, we had to analyze a Spanish poet and one of their poems, and write a poem of our own based off of their poem. The poet I chose was Federico Garcia Lorca, and the poem I chose was "Ciudad Sin Sueños".

Reflection

I thought I wasn't going to do a good job on the poem as I had no experience with poetry, but it actually turned out to be pretty good.

For this project we had to create a script and video in Spanish of a fake news broadcast which included several things we have learned so far in class. We each had our own roles for the broadcast: I was the Meteorologist (and video editor), Josh was the breaking news anchor, Wayne and Brandon were the main anchors, Hadja was the fashion consultant, and Darian was the health consultant. I really liked how our video turned out, and this was a fun project to do.

Español Ser y Estar Presentación - Zack Waxler y Ngozi Enwereji

Posted by Zack Waxler in SPANISH 2 - Moran - D on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 9:53 am
For this project we had to make a presentation to demonstrate the different uses of the verbs ser and estar, which both mean to be in Spanish. We had to distinguish the difference between ser which is used for "permanent" descriptions and estar which is used for "temporary" descriptions. In the project we showed the various application of each verb. My partner for the project was Ngozi Enwereji.

Día De los Muertos Proyecto - Zack Waxler

Posted by Zack Waxler in SPANISH 2 - Moran - D on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 7:24 am

For this project we had to create a reflection, a eulogy, a video of us reading the eulogy, a sugar skull, and a skull mask in memory of a deceased loved one. I really liked having the opportunity to reflect on and learn about my grandmother, Clare Waxler. I never knew her because she died a few years before I was born, but I wish I did because she was an amazing person.

English Reflection

by Zack Waxler

for Clare Waxler

For this project I chose to focus on my Dad’s mother, Clare Waxler who died on 1996 from renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer). She was born here in Philadelphia, and remained here for her whole life. On July 2nd, 1936 she got married to Samuel Waxler, who was a dentist in south Philadelphia, and shortly after that had four children. For most of her life after that, she was a housewife and devoted her time to raising my dad, my aunts Linda and Marilyn and my uncle Richard. She moved around Philadelphia several times during her lifetime, first she moved from her parent’s house to Samuel’s house (and dental office), then she moved to the house that my dad inherited from them, and I am currently living in. She was in the house that I am living in when she passed away.

Although I never knew her, because she died four years before I was born, I have heard a lot about her and how important she was to my family. Someone in my family described her as “the mortar that held our family together”, because when she was alive, our whole extended family was very close, and when she died the different branches of our family started seeing each other a lot less. My parents always say that they wish I could have met her when she was alive, and that she would have loved to have met my sister and I before she died. I wish I had met her too, because for most of my life I have only had one pair of grandparents (my grandfather (her husband) died when I was three or four, and I don’t really have any memories of him other than vague pictures in my head). She also had a very close relationship with my Dad, which still reflects in him today because of how much he praises her, he only has good things to say about her.

I created my skull and mask for her because I’ve never really learned about my grandmother in depth before, and I wanted to take this project as an opportunity to explore my family’s past. Going into the project I had only heard scattered facts and talks about her, and I was intrigued to learn more. Now that I’ve explored my family’s history, I feel like I can better understand what happened before I was born and how that connects to the present day. She was also one of the closest people to my family, because all of the other people that have died in my family only had distant or infrequent relationships with me. Since I didn’t have any mental pictures of her to model the skull and mask off of, I decided to use more meaningful items and designs. In the creation of my sugar skull and mask, I tried to emphasize how caring she was with the use of various heart shaped objects and warm colors. I also incorporated a lot of blue into the skull and mask, because she was very passionate about that color, and because she took my whole family down to the beach in North Carolina every year.

Learning about día de los muertos has helped me consider a different aspect of death that I had never really considered before. I have an unusually large family, so we experience death more frequently than other families do. When we experience death, we generally go through the same process, where we mourn, have a funeral and bury or cremate the person. Our customs are very different to the ones outlined in día de los muertos, because we generally believe that it isn’t respectful to the deceased to celebrate their passing, and that we “owe” the person the same treatment and customs that we have given everyone else in the family. Pretty much all religions and cultures that I’ve come in contact with in my surroundings seem to support this idea of mourning the dead, and I think it’s interesting that people in the United States (that I’ve seen) have this idea of sad over happy. Although I’ve grown up like this, I completely understand the meaning behind día de los muertos, and would be open to celebrating a person’s death if that is what they believe in. Personally, I would feel bad in a way if I cast a big shadow on my family and friends after I died, so in that way the tradition makes sense to me.

Sample Q/A

Describe your perfect day.

My perfect day? Um, I don’t know, doing something with you guys (to me and my family). And not cooking.

What is your earliest memory

I was in a swing on a porch and I was twirling around and my hair got all twisted around.

What do you think your life will be like when you get older?

I don’t know…. Um, I don’t know. I have no idea.

Humans of SLA Beeber: Michael

Displaying photo.JPGZack: What was it like growing up in your neighborhood?

Michael: I stay inside a lot sleeping. I didn't know a lot of people in my block. They were all most just racist. During the summer was the only time I came outside. Mostly because my mom made go outside. When I went outside I would ride my bike around my block. I was like the fastest one. Our block had a lot of bike races. I destroyed everyone. They all made excuses like they broke a bone or that I was Asian so I have an unfair advantage. Which was true cause I was born a ninja.

Zack: What is the time that you remember the most from growing up?

Michael: In 6th grade, my teacher had a Jeopardy game about math. I was like the smartest one in my school. The teacher would put me against like everyone when I play. I won like so many games. I think I only lost like one. My teacher was proud of me so he gave me lemon pie after I recited 70 digits of pi. Everyone was so mad at me cause I did so well in school without doing much work. I got kicked out and stuff and I still ace every math benchmark and a was kind of a bully.

Zack: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Michael: In ten years, I see myself as a musician playing the piano and singing in front of people and getting money for it. I see myself making all this money while living in like a one room apartment. I see myself eating ice and sleeping when I am not singing.

Tips for Teenagers

By: Zack Waxler (3), Brandon Miranda (4), Taylor Simmons (1), Chloe Bartlett (2) and Mya Bulgin (5)

Based on the I-Search papers that we completed on teenage development, here are some tips for teenagers to help them be happier and to help them develop in positive ways.

  1. Don’t trust people too much because sometimes that overwhelming sense of trust can come back to hurt you.

  2. It’s not your fault, so don’t blame yourself. If someone in your life is having a hard time getting through life, you might blame yourself and think that you are the reason why they are having a hard time. Don’t do that.

  3. Getting appeal from your peers isn’t as important as you think, don’t have that as your top priority in life.

  4. Do not be influenced by those who will make you unsuccessful. Remember that most of people (that aren’t your parents) that you look up to could be the reason why you are losing the capability of achieving what you want.

  5. Mya’s Slot (She is absent today)

My Artist’s Statement: By Zack Waxler

I chose a laptop case for my project because computers are a big part of my life and I use them all the time. I also wanted to make something cool that stands out amongst other projects for it’s techiness. This sculpture shows my creativity, my fondness of the color silver and my love for computers. I really like how my project came out and it looks neat.

In tech this year we have learned that the internet is a very open place. We saw many examples of workers fired from their jobs and people not getting accepted to schools because of their tweets. This means that anything you do on it can come back to hurt you in the future. I chose this image because it seemed very natural and basic, and I think that blended well with the technology aspect of the caption. I also chose it because it follows the rule of thirds and looks nice.

Express Videos and Artists Statements

Posted by Zack Waxler in ENGLISH 1 - Zeller - D on Friday, December 5, 2014 at 11:18 am
These are our artists statements and videos, first up we have our group video's artists statement. Enjoy!
Group Artists Statement: By Zack Waxler, Jaycob Rodriguez, Ryan Burke and Abdulomar Tucker

This unit was about expressing ourselves & trying to get us to be who we are & not what society wants us to be (wear the mask). This video helps us learn about our friends more by showing us what they like to do & how hard they have worked on this activity or how hard they try to do the best they can at this. It also teaches us to not be so quick to judge others and how we need to accept their differences so we can grow as people.

For the video, we all shared each others’ interests; We tried doing parkour (Jaycob); we tried playing games (Zack); we also tried skateboarding (Ryan); we tried drawing (Abdul). By doing this we learned more about each other & how hard they worked to get to skill level they are at now.

One of the important themes of our video was learning about each other. We decided to try each other’s activities together and learn more about ourselves as a group. This created a bond between us that made our friendship stronger, creating better sense of gratitude towards each other, and developing a sense of mutual respect.
Zack Waxler's Artists Statement

We express ourselves through video because we want to let other people see our lives. Just talking to people doesn’t let them see what your life is actually like outside of what they know. When they watch a video, however it gives them a glimpse of what’s really happening. Technology makes it so much easier to communicate our lives. Letters, pictures and drawings are all just too slow for the modern world, people like to be able to instantly look at whatever you create.

Zack Waxler's Video
Ryan Burke's Artists Statement

My video wasn’t finished but what i started on included stuff I use to definewho i am & what I like to do. Music is something that has played/plays a big role in my life. I just had a few bands & artists that I like or listen to a lot. I also like to build & design so I had a few pictures of stuff I made with the DMD (Department of Making & Doing). I didn’t have time to record or take any pictures of this for my video but I like to skateboard or playe baseball in my free time. I was also going to put a few quotes i like in there but never got to that either.

Making this project helped me learn a bit more about myself. I never really realized before that some of these things made me who I am. I thought it was just something I liked to do but they actually shaped me into who I am.

Abdul's Artists Statement

While doing this project I learned the reasons why we express ourselves, how technology affects the way we express ourselves and connect with others, and whether or not I expressed  the complexity of myself in my video.

To begin, the reason we express ourselves is  because humans are social beings. Humans love to know about others and for others to know about them. Even in each conversation information is shared which creates a better understanding of the two people. Creating a bond.Which creates a relationship. People express themselves in many ways like the way they dress , they way they act, and what music they listen to;However, in the end it all boils down to the same fact. We as humans, are social so we express ourselves to learn more about each other and for them to know more about us.

Furthermore, Technology affects the way we express ourselves and the way we connect with each other in a huge way. Technology is good and makes life comfortable , but it also impends on the  amount of physical  conversations that happen. Nowadays the whole family could be in the same room , but they wouldn’t be bonding because they are all on their phones. Creating a gap between each other.People use technology like video games to express themselves in many ways. If someone plays games like naruto , then they must like anime. They would most likely have friends who watch anime. If someone plays sport games then they must be competitive. They may participate in sport activities.

Moreover, I think that I have expressed the  complexity of myself in my video. I showed my competitive side by showing  me playing video games like madden, 2k and gta. I showed my fun side by having a video of me playing around with my cousins and showed a vine. I then showcased my talent of art by showing a painting  and my drawing. I then showed my favorite childhood show along with me showcasing me being a muslim. I recorded myself reading a sura and took a picture.I also showed my motivated myself by putting in a quote I live by. So, i think  I did well with expressing my complexity.

In conclusion, While doing this project I learned the reason why people express themselves, how technology affects they way we express ourselves and connect with people, and how I expressed the complexity of myself in my video. I learned that people express themselves because they are curious. The technology has a huge impact on how people express themselves and how we connect. I also learned I had expressed all of my complexity's that make Abdulomar, Abdulomar.

Jaycob's Artists Statement

This video is of how me and 3 other people in my group worked together to try each others hobbies and understand each others interest. We all gave each others hobby a chance and came closer together as a group and friends. To completely understand the video it should be known that each hobby was something that one of us did more than the other and decided that it would be cool for them to know. The big thing that I learned was that something that seems small to some people can actually be a big part of another persons life and that we should all acknowledge that about each other.
