My portrait was based off all the activities I did on my birthday. I drew the gifts I received and the places I went to celebrate my birthday. The background in my portrait is pink because that is the color I wore on my birthday and pink is also my absolute favorite color. For my materials I used color pencils, because I felt more comfortable and in control the color pencils.  I also used clear nail polish to make  my lips shiny to symbolize the type of lip gloss I was wearing, I wore the diamond on my head because on my birthday I wore a diamond on my forehead: There is no real reason I wear the diamond, I just think it looks nice on me.

My drawing represents what I love, what I did and what I want to do in life. I drew a basketball because I love the game I love the sport in general out of all the sports there is and basketball is also a sport I enjoy to play for fun because it’s a competitive sport and most of my friends enjoy playing it. I also decided to include my soccer jersey and my school name in my drawing because I played for the school soccer team and that was a really important moment in my high school life it was an achievement playing for that team and starting. I also included my favorite player jersey into the art piece Lebron james. I hope to become a sports journalist or analyst when i’m older cause i love sports and its a easy job for me. For this art piece I only used a pencil and colored pencils for this artwork because those materials are the only ones i’m use to using. What i’m most proud of is getting the work done on time and also making my art work easy to understand. One thing I would change about my project is just putting more time and effort into because I honestly feel that I could have done a better job and there were many more images that I wanted to add to it. What I got of this was use class time effectively and really take my time on what I am drawing rushing makes an art piece look poor.

Quarter 1 Art Project!

Posted by Nathan Lewis in Art 2 · Hertz · C1 on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 9:14 am

This project was about creating a self portrait art piece and I found it very interesting and cool, because the teacher showed us some examples of what we should be doing and they looked very enticing to me.
At first I didn’t know what I was going to do because I never looked at myself as a good artist.

After a little bit of brainstorming, I came up with an idea to draw my face and add symbols or things that I care about the most or things that are always on my mind. The first thing that came to mind was the idea about the Jamaican flag in the face, I did that because I'm from Jamaica and that’s where I spend most of my life so it has a strong effect on the type of person that I am.

The more I drew, the more ideas started coming to my head and that’s when I added things that I love the most to the piece which were; music, fashion and soccer. What I loved about this was adding the different colors to balance out after painting the flag black green and yellow because those are really bright
Colors. If I could do anything different, I would draw my face with little or no facial structure because I do have a fat face, but otherwise from that I like my portrait.

Final Portrait Project Submission

Artist Statement

Jy’Aire O’Connor

For this quarter of Art we made a small self portrait the represents us either metaphorically, head on, or distinctly. My art was somewhat of a metaphor not mentioning or showing anything about me in it’s entirety. My self portrait  included one of kanye's album mascots Dropout Bear, a squid, a rainbow fish, a treasure chest, Rick (From Rick and Morty) as the sun, and outer space. For this creation I used Oil pastels, a pencil, color pencils, pen, sharpie, and crayons. I wanted my Self Portrait to be somewhat dry and not too shiny this is why I chose these tools . My portrait consist of many colors because I wanted it to be vibrant.

This portrait represents my life and my future choices. In my creation the sky and the ocean kind of collide because my thoughts on both are conflicting. I can’t choose between studying astronomy or marine biology when I get to college. For the Kanye West Dropout Bear I chose him because the character itself is ironic. It’s called Dropout Bear yet he graduated high school and earned his Bachelor's degree. Although I joke about dropping out or feel as though I want to I always persevere and pull through when times get hard. Rick being the sun shows how much the show and science influences me. The squid, fish, and treasure chest kind of point out my love for marine life and the perks that come from studying them.

I Am more of a visual learner so while drawing I pulled up images of the things you see in my self portrait and drew them. While doing the outlines of the object I made sure to make it poke out which is why I used the sharpie. I then had to rearrange the initial positioning of the objects to create as little space there was. When done with that I colored in the self portrait giving the objects distinct colors making sure no object mimicked the other. I smudged the oil pastel to fill in any missing spots. An artist that inspired me is Vincent van Gogh. His art is very abstract and he’s known for using oil tools to paint. One of my favorite pieces of art from him is “The Starry Night”.

If I could change one thing it’d be to add more patterns in my art like Vincent van Gogh. Just like swirls or zig zags. I hope to get better with oil tools and get close to his way of art.

All in all I feel as though this project went really well. I learned a lot while doing this such as the different type of utensils as well as multiple ways you can use them. I also learned that I have a little bit of artist in me. I was actually proud of my art it looked great! I also learned that something so basic could come out so complicated or be considered abstract art when lots of time is put in.  I hope to use my experience now for projects later on in the future. I can’t wait to do more projects close or similar to this one and see the improvements.

Q1 Art Project

My art takes a very simplistic to my life. Overall very blunt and not ambiguous. I decided to draw a smiley face (because I’m a happy child) around four things that mean a lot to me. The first thing I added was a playstation controller. I added this because I grew up using playstation consoles. The second thing is uno cards. This is symbolic because it represents the time I spend with my friends and how we bond.I also drew food because I really like food. When I created this project I really wanted to convey my simplistic life and how I value little things.I created this project using the most basic materials. I used your average pencil for drawing and coloring pencils for well, coloring. This is to further convey the simpleness of my art style. I tried my best to merge the colors in the background to have a spacey feel to it.

I would say my friend young gravity inspired this art piece. She makes a lot of space kind of artwork and I really wanted to try out this approach. Blending colors is a very important technique in this artwork. I think so because the background is space so it being monochrome is pretty lame so blending colors would make it good looking.I most proud of finishing this project I feel like I could’ve improved on a lot. I think i should make my color blending better. In conclusion, SPACE.

Final Art Project Q1

My artwork contains a faded green hill on the right hand side of the paper and it overlaps the darker green hill on the left hand side of the paper. Above the hills is a reddish purple color for the sky and then there are three clouds. They are outlined in black and are colored with purple and blue for a blended look. Coming out of the cloud on the right there is a head with their brain exposed. The brain is the same color as the lower portion of the sky and the person is looking at the grey moon and the yellow stars in the sky. The sky above is a light red that is fading out. I want my work to communicate my hope that I had to visit space. The person is coming out of the clouds because their head is in the clouds making it a dream like state. Which is why the sky is red when the moon and stars are out. It is not reality.

To make this artwork I used colored pencils, a black sharpie and pastels. I used the black sharpie to outline everything and the colored pencils and pastels to color in everything else. To make this work I drew the picture on the canvas and started off using colored pencils to color the clouds and then I realized there were pastels. I began to use the pastels for everything and blended them with my finger. One technique I used was blending with my finger and it really helped bring everything together. I am most proud of the clouds in my work. One thing I would change is the outline of everything in black. I learned that pastels aren’t as easy as they seem to use.

Savage Planet

In my work it shows the different feelings and personalities I have that complete me and make me who I am today. Everything around me also change and shape what I feel or my personality. I want my work to communicate that I’m a real creative and outgoing person with different emotions. The tools and materials that I used were a regular number 2 pencil and markets and I used them to show my simple yet complex surrounding and mindset. My work previous and my work now compare because they both stuck to the same idea and base but the final one showed more color and focus. The process that I used to create my work was the process of just using my creativity and my art skills to display how I feel and who I am in artwork. First I thought “how can I show who” then I tried different ideas but came to a final decision when I started drawing. I couldn’t link anyone to my type of work because I made my own skill with my own creative mind. In my journey of my art I was not a big color person but I experimented with using some color. I’m proud that I kept the same idea because I normally always switch my ideas. If I could change one thing about this project I would make it more colorful. In conclusion this unit has showed me the importance of using different materials and knowing them.

My Younger Cousin & I

Posted by Yinka Hollinger in Art 2 · Hertz · C1 on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 8:59 am

Trey Hollinger October 19, 2017 Art 2 Ms.Hertz Artist Statement This is a picture of my representation of what stood out to me as I viewed my younger cousin. I guess this was apart of getting older when you can look at your younger siblings and family members and see what their true characteristics and commonalities really are. When I was younger and around my cousin, I did not view him as I do now, I realize how much he reminds me of when I was his age. I want my artwork to reflect on how family does really matter in the world that we live in and also generations affect us as a whole. Though I am not that much older myself I do realize how the older generation does have a major effect on the up and rising generation. If we do not inspire and educate the youth then future generations are doomed. I think this is why it matters to me so much showing that in my family my up and coming youth will be well prepared for living their lives and growing into adults. The materials and tools I used in this art piece were simple. I used a pencil for outlining and tracing of my artwork. I used specific colors for the colored pencils to represent how we both had the favorite colors mines being red, his being blue, and us both liking the eagles so I chose to use green. I’m not much of an artist but over the years of creating artwork, I have developed what we call an “ artist's eye”, where I can view art pieces including my own from a different perspective than most people way see art. To create my artwork I first took the time to think of what I wanted to create. After this, I took the time to gather the materials I needed in order to create the art piece. Next, I took the time to think I wanted to create, why I wanted to create it, and how I wanted to create it. After this, I viewed other artwork so that not only did I have somewhere to start I looked at real artists who helped inspire me to start my artwork. I have always been inspired by Pablo Picasso’s art and enjoyed viewing his artwork. I remember doing research on his technique and tone of his artwork which helped inspire this art piece because I remember viewing his art that he created in memory of a long lost friend he had. I learned how technic is very important because it may be what affects how the art is interpreted, it may be the reason why this colorway looks like it was meant to be, compared to a bunch of colors being mashed together. One new technique I learned after this piece of art is the heaviness or how hard I press when I draw because before I thought to press harder and longer meant better and more “3D” in a sense but now I realize a lightly colored piece of art can be just as nice as any other artwork. When I look at this work the thing I am most proud of is probably the meaning behind the artwork. This makes me proud because it shows that I am making progress and growing as a young man because normally I don’t represent the family that I care about through artwork normally I have to speak on it in person or through visual representation. If I could change one thing about this project I would change the way that I set up the picture so that it was more detailed. I did not want to add too much and end up messing the artwork. In conclusion, I learned that when you have a passion for something or can truly understand someone it makes creating something in as a representation of them a lot easier even when you aren’t an artist yourself.

Q1 Portrait Project

Posted by Indigo Burton in Art 2 · Hertz · C1 on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 8:51 am

"Thought"
"Thought"
This picture features a portrait of me and the things I love and like around me. It starts off with my disfigured face in the middle of the paper. I filled out my lips the most here to focus on the meaning of communication and words and I also made a single eye bigger than the face to represent the future and the mindset I have in life. I made sure the body and head colors were true to real life so that the viewer could understand what I was trying to draw. Directly to the right of the head there is a series of music notes which represent my love for music and my passion for music. I made sure to run the vision rays coming through my eyes through the music note to show my focus on music. Then directly above the head is my brain which is outside of the head to represent out of the box thoughts and the bubbles are thoughts forming and flowing through the air or my mind. Everything in the picture ends up in a puddle that takes up the majority of the bottom half. This puddle is supposed to be me and everything that amounts to me.

I decided to use color pencils in order to outline the little things with great detail. I used lots of random figures and out of the box ideas to represent my portrait which could only be described to be similar to the work of Pablo Picasso. I think our elements and abstract mindsets are very similar when it comes to our pictures. From the time I started this project to the time I finished I learned to just go with the flow, ideas will keep flowing and spilling on the paper as you go. I’ve been very proud of my great amount of detail and thought but I would love to change the colors so that the idea was better represented.

In all, I've learned how to start my work in the most efficient way while also being able to represent current thoughts along with accurate representations.

Portrait Project

Posted by Ivana Gutierrez in Art 2 · Hertz · C1 on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 8:51 am

For the first project for Quarter 1 we had to make a portrait that communicates something, and or reflects a culture or personal experiences. We had a choice of choosing different materials to make our portrait but our portrait had to be on a 4.25” x 5.5” piece of paper. The way I would describe my portrait to someone is by telling them to imagine the Mexican flag, Green on the left, White in the middle, and Red on the right. In the middle of the flag, there is an eagle in which you can’t see on my portrait because on my portrait I drew a pair of holding hands. The holding hands are mostly covering the flag on my portrait but you can still see the colors of the flag. Also on my portrait, the flag seems to be cracked there two cracks on the flag. So what I’m basically trying to say or communicate through my portrait is when the earthquake that just had happen in Mexico this year which was really bad. Many people’s homes and other buildings were destroyed. Many people died because of the earthquake, a family member of mine passed away due to the earthquake. So I want to show that people in Mexico can unite and get together no matter what and overcome anything that comes their way and that they are going to overcome it. So to create this portrait I used not to many materials. I just used watercolor paint, the watercolor paintbrush, and newspaper to keep myself from making a mess on the table and lastly, I used a Micro Pen. For the watercolor paint I just dipped the paintbrush in the water and then I rubbed it on the color I was using to get some product and then I started to paint. For the micro pen, I traced everything that needed to be traced after my portrait was dry. I believe that this relates to another project that I did in the 2nd or 3rd grade, where we had to paint the objects that were modeling for us. I used paint for both projects. For me getting the project done wasn’t hard. It was an easy process. I first thought of what I wanted to do. Next, I drew out the idea in my sketchbook and just drew what would be good. Then I started to trace that onto the paper that was given to us to use for our final product and started to add color and Lastly I fixed several mistakes if I had any. An artist who also is similar to my work is Frank Webb. He uses watercolor paint for his artwork and so did I. http://http://www.artshow.com/webb/ A technique that you should know is important towards your work is using your time wisely. Don’t do everything at last minute because then perhaps your project might not come out the way you would want it to.  Also, there is really not a technique that I learned this time. The most thing I'm proud of is that I drew something that meant to me. If I were to get the chance to change something I wouldn’t change anything but the position the holding hands are.
What I learn from completing this project is that looking at other people's work we had different ideas and the creative was different from one another, we all think different. We chose something from experiences or culture that really represented us. Also just to have fun in what we are creating is what really counts.
