African American history is something that is so rich and filled with culture that everyone should learn about it. Especially African Americans. When you are a child your brain gathers almost all the information you know as an adult. Studies even show that children learn the most at ages early as 2 to 5 years old. So why are we not teaching our African American children about their people? The problem is that many grade school children only learn black history during black history month. Unlike high schools, African American history is not required to move onto the next grade, so often history teachers do not go the extra mile to teach this subject. Children unfortunately only learn what they are taught during the short four weeks of black history month, and whatever is in the usually, old, and European based history book. Also, this history is often shown in the wrong light. During black history month the main focus is the civil rights movement and the so-called “main” people involved. People such as Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, and Malcolm X. These are all great people but there could be so much more. I want to change this. For my capstone, I decided that I would create a club teaching children about black history that we didn't learn in school. We met up every Wednesday for about a month and eventually I will be taking these children to the African American history museum in downtown Philadelphia

I didn’t use many sources for my club because all the information I taught was information that I’ve come to learn over the years. I wanted this class to be very personal and not really feel like class for the kids. Here are a few sources I used to help. The Philadelphia MOVE Bombing.” Stuff You Missed in History. N.p., May 2017. Web. This article is an article about the move bombing that happened on philadelphia in 1985. This was one of the things i taught the children during one of our classes. Like many of the subjects i taught, i already knew about this subject. I simply used this article to brush up on the subject. As well as seeing if their was anything i didn’t know or might have missed.

The Bombing of West Philly. YouTube.com. N.p., 19 Jan. 2014. Web. This is a video about the move bombing. One of the subject that i taught the kids was this so i used it as one of my resources. I showed the kids that were a bit older and that i think could handle it the video and then i asked their opinions. I also watched the video myself to see if their was anything different i could learn myself.

Holmes, Corie. “10 Ways to Get Your Child Excited to Learn.” TopTenReviews. N.p., 14 Apr. 2017. Web. This is an article on how to get kids to like learning. I read this because i’m not super experienced in teaching kids so i figured this would definitely help me out with my teachings. I used some of the strategies listed to try to keep the kids engaged and wanting to learn about what i had to say. I also tried to kiddy down the subject to not be as harsh but more informative

My Capstone was about Parent Teen Relationship and during this process I have learnt so much about only myself but younger teens. I chose this topic because not only did I have problems with my parent it affected the way I preformed academically. My capstone is based on ways to help teens establish a healthy relationship with their parents and vice versa. First step of my capstone was deciding how I would implement this idea. This capstone was created for fourteenth year old that as just hit puberty. I worked long and hard with Mr. Rosen Long and Mr. Gray on the lay out of what my capstone would look like. I created a survey with six questions which would let us examine the causes of the problems that arise in the relationship with the parents and the teens. I tried the survey out with five freshmen girls where I tested to see how this work shop would and after hearing the feedback from the students is went exceptionally well. I then went on and said let me now try this with a bigger group. Ms. Jackson allowed me to do her freshmen girls and it was so amazing. Not only did these girls have a good time but they learnt how to make healthy relationships within their homes. Personally I think this is a good activity for freshmen advisory to do with their girls to figure why they come to school so angry and failing classes. Let us keep promoting healthy relationships for our young ladies.

Ryan Swann Capstone

I started writing this spoken word poem, because of a break up I had with a long time girlfriend. I was in the hospital and we broke up and I started out the poem upset about feeling helpless to the situation. Then I started feeling abandoned, however, that quickly turned into resentment. Then once I finished the poem I was able to forget and move on. The final product exists as more of a collage of memories, rather than being something I continue to feel and something I hold onto. After writing this I also figured out that I would rather be writing over any other career choice. The project helped me finally figure out the person I want to be and the job I want to pursue.

I never left you

You never left the mind of mine

Until you left it for Dallas

You were never out of mind

But still never in sight

Sayings held no truth to us

And we only had monthly visits

So I forgot your face

But never your heartbeat

I remember you had a scent about you

And I trapped butterflies in my rib cage

While you glowed a being of Scarlet

But all of that lost in star lit emptiness

All of these memories turn heart to chore

I'm Lazy

And I didn't want to live anymore

So beats drop

Hearts fail

Mails snailed

But I promised you 365 letters

14 years old I stood in CVS for a book of stamps

'Cause there's something more romantic

About a letter

Than a text limited to 100 characters

Loves takes 4

But I have 1000 more to include

I wanted to write to you

That I would travel the billion miles it takes to reach you

Swerve the curves of the road

To intersect with the curves of your body

Teach a love that surpasses a puppy

As if age forces stipulations to emotion depth

Our emotional tolerance

Was not trained to love each other any more than we did

People should know that my trip to the mailbox

Wasn’t about birthday checks or amazon orders

But more for delivery of a message containing more than 140 characters

Forget the candy

I want to interact with you

More than an asthmatic

Wants to fluently interact with air

My air escapes in your being near

People say life is short

If that ends true

Mine will consist of you

We’ll lay together

Us, star, and moon

Pink Floyd in the distance

But the dark side is not present in your presence

I want your presence

Not presents

So I spent Christmas in the hospital

I never left you

You never left the mind of mine

Until you left it for Dallas

You were never out of mind

But still never in sight

Sayings held no truth to us

And we only had monthly visits

So I forgot your face

But never your heartbeat

I remember you had a scent about you

And I trapped butterflies in my rib cage

While you glowed a being of Scarlet

But all of that lost in star lit emptiness

All of these memories turn heart to chore

I'm Lazy

And I didn't want to live anymore

So beats drop

Hearts fail

Mails snailed

You moved to Dallas

So our present is frozen to picture

Future moves in dream

Flows to stream of thought

That’s video

But Dallas burns film

So all that's left is picture present

So I got present over presence

Maybe our love was at age level

Height of our tolerance

But who says that’s low

I was too slow to know what I had

Like Im age 3 and everything belongs to me

I just wanted you

Along with everything else

Now you’re gone

And I want to hate you for that

But I won't bring myself to ruin the memories left of you

And of course the memories stab

Like four year old me running with scissors

Once in awhile I fell

Sure it hurts like hell

But I f---ing bet I don’t do it again

Imani Mumin Capstone

The focus of our capstone is to create a book house that we will put books on that will be open to the public for younger children who likes to read but doesn’t have a way of getting a book or affording one. The learning goal is to help create a way to help student is neighborhoods that we live in perform better as students. We feel like this project will help them to be on the right track when it comes to school. Studies show that student that live in low-income neighborhoods are less likely to graduate high school. No we cannot change the fact that the children around us in low-income neighborhoods but we can do something to help the graduation rate increase. We chose to do a book drive so that people can help us get books for kids to read to put in our book house. We also donated some of our own from books we had when we were younger. We will leave our book house open to the public so that kids can feel free to grab a book of their choice to read whenever that feel like it. Although this is just a senior project the idea doesn’t stop here because we will continue to put more books for our book house after we graduate to continue to help these kids. This project will not only help kids but touch base on their everyday lives and we proud to have create this project.

capstone presentation
For my capstone project, I ultimately decided to do an online makeup portfolio. I decided to my capstone on makeup because it is something that I am, and have been very passionate about for a while. By doing this online makeup portfolio I wanted to practice my craft, and to have a more professional way to broadcast my work. After completing this project I have happily reached the goals that I set for myself, which was to better myself as an artist.

**The slideshow provided only has 5 of the images I used on this project. Please click the link on the first slide to view my entire project, which is an online makeup portfolio**

Capstone Bibliography

Staff, Investopedia. “Portfolio.” Investopedia. N.p., 25 Nov. 2003. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

I selected this source for two main reasons. This was my first source, and I believe it poses to be the base of my research. First reason being is because this source talks about what exactly is a portfolio. Some people don’t know what portfolio is, and some people think it can be only one uniformed thing. However, this link talks on the different types of portfolios, and exactly what a portfolio is. Before starting something you should know what it is, so this was only rhetorical. Secondly, this link gives some insight as to the effect that a portfolio has. A lot of people, including myself at one point, thought a portfolio was something just used in school or something. However, it’s way more helpful and could be a bigger impact in the work field.

“The 7 Elements of A Great Portfolio Website.” Skillcrush. N.p., 24 Oct. 2016. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

I found this source useful because it included format, and some things that I didn’t know that I should know. What I mean by format id that this source gave out seven steps, in order to help a successful portfolio. This is good, and is gonna be helpful to me to use as a timeline guide when creating my piece. Two things in this source that I didn’t know, that after reading I believe will help me is to integrate social media, and to make a clear mission statement. The first thing someone wants to know when reviewing your stuff is what and why. Therefore, I’ll include those two things.

Awards, The Webby. “Top 5 Free Portfolio Sites.” Top 5 Free Portfolio Sites. Vitamin T, 11 May 1970. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

Unlike most of my other sources, this source didn’t really help me per say with actually creating my portfolio. Instead, it helps by giving me options. Options as to what websites I could use, or what kind of websites I could use for my portfolio. It also helps with me seeing how I want to format my website. This website gave me five different website options to chose from, if I wanted to. After looking at those listed websites, I probably won’t use any of them, but it still helps because I know although free websites are limited, Is till do in fact have some choice when picking.

“How To Build A Makeup Artist Portfolio.” Makeup Artist Essentials. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

Moving forward, past the general portfolio portion and the website portion, this source is a more direct source about makeup. That is makeup portfolio, what is exactly what I’m doing. This source was helpful because it talks about exactly what i’m doing such as how to build a makeup portfolio, what’s included, and why is it important. All of those categories are pieces that I will reflect on, in my writing section of the portfolio. This will also help me because this source gives me two different options as to how I want to display my portfolio. The more potions, the better.

“Makeup portfolio.” My Portfolio. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

This source is extremely useful, because unlike most of my other sources, this is an actual example. This isn’t a made up example, but this is an actual online portfolio that is real that I found online. This is really useful because it gives me a prime example of how I could use and format my actual product. The good thing about this website, which is also unique is that it’s a hair and makeup portfolio. This shows me how you can incorporate more than one draft into your work. This is good for future reference when I start getting into hair and want to broadcast that work into my sight as well.

“Building a Makeup Artistry Portfolio 101: Finding Models.” QC Makeup Academy. N.p., 12 Dec. 2016. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

One limitation that I found of this source is that it was not explained in depth a I would have like it to be. I also would like for the source to include more subcategories. However, this source was useful because although it told me some things that I had already did, it allowed me to know that I was doing the right thing. The main thing that stuck out to me in this source was that it said when you’re first starting off with your work, that you should give out free trials and free make overs. I liked this because that is something that I already did when I first started, so I know that those steps were good ones in building my career.

“Testimonials.” MAKEUP BY MEGAN Makeup Artist Sydney Bridal Makeup Sydney Wedding Makeup Sydney South Coast Sutherland Shire Kangaroo Valley Southern Highlands Megan Vaughan Makeup Artist Testimonials Comments. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

This source is useful to me because it is unique. I say that because this source is full of testimonials after they got their makeup done. I found this useful because it tells from actual people, what it is that they did like and what it is that they don’t like. This is helpful to me and my business because I will know some things like what to do and what not to do. Is also useful because in my writing portion I planned to talk about what it is that makeup does, not only for me but for the clients. It’s a great feeling to make people feel amazing in their skin, so why not capture the moment.

“Free Website Builder - Your first steps towards online success.” 123-reg.co.uk. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

This source is usel for when I am actually makeup my website and the domain. Reason being is because it teaches readers how to build a website and domain. It also helps me because if I need more pages for more subcategory, it gives me that option. However the limitation of this source is that when you need more than a certain number of online pages, you will have to upgrade to a better version. The bad thing is that it costs. Not only does it costs, you won’t know if you like it or not until it’s paid for. So, there’s a risk that if I don’t like this option I could be wasting my money on it.

“Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners.” How to Make a Website. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

This website is useful because it gives me another alternative option for making my online portfolio. This good thing about this is that this source has many different templates. The different templates are the ways in which I can broadcast the work on my browser. I want to find the most attractive option for people who like makeup. This way my clientele can grow and I have impressed many people. This source is helpful to just that because as I said, it gives different samples for different things.

“Be a Show Off: Why Creating a Portfolio is Important.” Empire Beauty School. N.p., 06 Nov. 2013. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.

This is the last spruce that I chose, and I picked this one for three reasons. One, this is a cosmetology school that teaches their students how to e successful after school. Two, they are saying when people show off their work in a good way that it attracts people more because they feel comfortable with you. This will help me because now I know there isn’t a such thing as too much showing off in a portfolio.
