Social Media Survival Guide

On online I’m nice to other people that I don’t even know, and I appear online by being nice on other people page and showing love on their page by liking their pictures and commenting nice stuff, for example like instagram. I think people perceive me as cool and a nice person. Before posting I think carefully about if the picture is appropriate and do I really want to post it. The pros and cons of sharing online is that what you post online can really have a bad effect on you. Lack of Control, Permanence and Immediacy have an impact on our online lives because you can start being a different person online than your real character. Your company should do a social media background checks because the potential employers will represent you and your company. Free speech is basically having the right of saying anything without the restraint of the government. Violation of copyright rules and commercial speech is protected by the first amendment. Crimes that is involved in a speech is not protected by the first amendment and also threats is not protected by the first amendment. An internet stroll upset people by posting stuff that are violent and other stuff that will make someone feel bad. The goals of internet trolls is to make people comment on their post and like their post. We can stop “trolling” by not commenting on their post. The pros and cons of posting anonymously online is people don’t know who you really are and you can still get bully. My top 3 tips to anyone who uses social media is always be careful of what you post online, always be in the right mood and always make a decision before posting.

Social Media Survival Guide

Honestly I think online I would appear as a well educated, family oriented person.  think people would think I’m a nice person who care for others. I make sure that I seem to be acceptable of everyone. The cons are other people having your name and something pops up you don’t like. The pros is people able to see you grow. Lack of control is being careless and people can see others without them wanting to be shown. I don’t think I would mind a background check but I know some people don’t feel comfortable with one. I think free speech is freedom of expression which consists of , press, assembly and to petition the government for a redress of grievances, and the implied rights of association and belief. I think things protected are things that put others at risk of danger or things harmful to minors  . I think the things not protected is things people naturally see or is interacted in like social media. An internet troll is people who try to get others down. They are behind screens and they torment people. To stop trolling people can stop offending others. There are cons of anonymously posting online like when you post something people actually like and agree with it you can’t get knowledge for you good post. The pros is that you can base your opinion and no one will know exactly who you are and people you don’t want to know your social media page they want. A few things I can tell people about social media are be confident, be true to yourself, don’t try to please others. Social media is used to have fun don’t be on social media stressing. Also, don’t use social media to hurt  others.

Sianni Wood: Social Media Survival Guide

Sianni Wood

When I am online I am myself. I post what I want and I do not impersonate someone else. People would think of me as a person who loves to be around family and friends. On all of my social media sites I do not have any pictures of me by myself. Before I post online I think about my mom because she follows me. So I have to ask myself is this appropriate. The Pros of sharing online is that you are able to find out things faster. The Cons of sharing online is that it is not private. When we post something sometimes we don’t look over it and ask ourselves who will see this. We also don’t realize that when we post something that it is there forever. We don’t know that once we hit post it is immediately available to everyone around the world. This can affect our reputation. If we post something inappropriate it can cause us to get fired from our job or never get a job. I think that potential employers should not give out background checks. They should know how to separate their private life from their professional life. Free speech is the act of saying what you want. Some stuff like invasion of privacy, discrimination/racism, ruining someone’s reputation with false information is not protected by the law. But, you can state your opinion in a proper manner. An internet troll is someone who bullies people online and get joy from doing it. The goals of internet trolls is to get attention. We can stop trolling by just ignoring them. The pros of posting anonymously is that people don’t know who you are and they can’t hold anything against you. The cons of posting anonymously is that you can still get targeted and get bullied.

Tips:

  • Be respectful of yourselves and others when posting online.

  • Always ask yourself , “Who will see this” before posting

  • Do not bully anyone. If you don’t have anything to say then don’t say it at all.

Malayah Johsnon Social Media Survival Guide

Online I appear as different people but none of them are really me.When I search my first and last name none of the girls are me.But when I type in my @ name on twitter every thing came up.Most of my picture from photo gallery came up and other pictures of my friends.I think people will perceive me as pretty and nice. One example on how people perceive you online vs. in person is the “Selfie Girls”.Before I post anything online I think how people would react to it.Different people have different reactions to things and perspectives. People judge people based off of there social media accounts. One pros of posting online is that you can share an experience with other. One con about posting anything online is that people can take your picture and turn it into something its not and people can just run with it.One example of how people can take things and run with it is when someone screen shotted a picture of a little and turned into a memons.Lack of Control, Permanence and Immediacy has an impact on our lives because people dont have control over what they do with what you put online. But not just online people also take what you give them and turn it into something its not.People also can get information about you without you evening know.It is easy to hack into computers and other devices. When you make any post online you should think about how people react to it.You also should think about the different perspectives that different people have. You can feel one way about something but others can  feel  disrepected.Today companies are doing a little research on you.Companies are looking at you social media accounts to figure out should they hire you based off of your appearance online. They think would this person be a good look for our company or will they embarrass our company.I think this is good idea because you can get an idea of who is working for your company. The Free Speach is saying that you can say what you want to say but there is a limit.Free Speach is protected under the law in the First Adendmen.”The First Amendment does not protect individuals from facing civil penalties if they defame another person through written or verbal communication.”An Internet Troll is a person that likes to start problems over the internet for the fun of it.They start arguments by talkind about you to make you feel bad about yourself. We can stop trolling by treating others how we want to be treated. We also could stop trolling by keeping a postive vibe and community. The pros of posting anonymously is that people wouldnt know who you are.Another pro of posting anonymously is that you are protecting your self from people thinking of you in a bad way.One con of posting is that people dont know who you really are.

Tips for posting online.

1.You should always think how other people would think about you’ve posted.

2.You should think how will it effect you in the long run.

3.Finally,you should think would your parents think about what you’ve posted.

Social Media Survival Guide

On the online community you are what you post and what other people make. This means that people will perceive you of what you post online and what other people make the post into like Memes. The most important thing before you post anything is that  you should ALWAYS CONSIDER what you are about to post and how others might perceive it. This is very important because people can take your post and do anything with it. For example they can make humiliating Memes of it. Anything you post will most certainly always be somewhere on the internet. You can’t control what people do with your post. Also be careful of what you post because future employers might look at what you post on social media and base if they should hire you on what you have posted.

There are good things that come with posting online. Some pros are publicity and entertainment. You can get publicity by posting things people like and will share. That will also go with entertainment because you can post things that are comedic and make people laugh. Some cons are people taking it out of context and humiliation. People can take it out of context by not knowing any background information about you. You can get humiliation by people creating Memes of an awkward post of yourself doing a weird position.

Be careful of what you post because it can get you in trouble. If you post something that ruins the reputation of others, is explicit, and/or causes someone to harm themselves or someone else, you are breaking the first amendment. really watch out for are trolls. They are people who sit behind a computer and get enjoyment of making others hurt. You can stop internet trolls by ignoring them and not acknowledging their existence. If anyone you know is dealing with a troll, you should tell them that they are better than the trolls and shouldn’t care what other people that don’t know you say about you when you know it’s not true.

Now there are many pros and cons to posting anonymously. I’m only going to list a few of them. One pro to posting anonymously is that if you post something that is going to get you into trouble, they can’t say that it was you who posted it. One con about posting anonymously is that if you post something you are proud of you can’t take ownership of it unless you prove otherwise.

Here are some tips. 1) Think twice before you post anything on social media. 2) Make your accounts private if you don’t want anyone to see what you post. 3) REMEMBER you are better than trolls. They are just out to hurt others for fun.

My online identity by jeremiah conley

Well if you look me up online I am basically invisible but there is a reason for that. I never use my actual name for any social media in general because I would ( like most people ) would not like to be judged for what I post online. Even though I do not post anything negative on them and if it is offensive to some people I will take it down. I do not  really  think people judge me for this  because they would most likely agree with me on that subject so I don’t think a lot of people would judge me at all. Usually when i want to post something I consider if the content is to offensive, disgusting or just stupid in general because if you get a job interview they will look up your social media to see if you get hired or not. I always think of the future so if i think of posting a certain thing i’ll stop and consider it before hand.

There are some pros and cons for sharing online there is always a high chance that an internet troll will always  try to get a response out of you just because they enjoy it.  some people will be envious of your lifestyle but it may not be true there are even more pros and cons so watch what you post.  Sometimes there is a Lack of control for example one girl had a list of every person she had relations with it had every detail she sent it to 3 friends and after that she lost control of the situation , for permanence a Mother put a picture of her daughter , people online then begun to make memes ( pictures with captions) and that became stuck online forever. Then there is Immediacy when some people post certain things it may bring a crowd of urgency, when nicki minaj posted something online to criticize the picture people started to go into a panic well it is more like they started to talk about  her even though she said that it should not be a costume.

When you think about your potential employers looking through your accounts you may think of these questions: why are they going through my Instagram account?, or why is that even needed. Well when they are going into your accounts they are trying to find what type of person you are and reasons they should or should not hire you. For example in Tech class we examined one anonymous person’s twitter account and what she had posted, there were posts saying she would do some illegal things at home, vulgar language and other offensive things that would most likely that would not get her the job. She may have had free speech , which is the ability to say whatever she wants but on some social media it is just not accepted. Only the things such as obscene was on her account and I do not think I would have hired her because of those things.

There are even things online known as an internet troll . They basically make your day worse by posting rude or very indecent messages to other people. They may even show up on your social media account as well. They really only want a response out of you so I think the best way to  deal with them is to ignore them but some people could not do that so I would also suggest deleting the comments and try not to think about it.  There really is not a way to stop trolling but we can win the situation by not giving them what they want which is a response from you or make a thing such as a comment war. The only way we could stop them is by not giving them the attention they want that and like I said earlier you can delete the comments and We could all sign a petition that  negative and rude comments would be banned from social media.

They could always post anonymously there are some benefits and cons to that. One thing is that like the name you would not know who they are which is a benefit for them but mostly negative time for you because they can keep coming back and back but here's is a good side for you they can always be tracked down by police if they threaten you but they can be banned still even if anonymous even in some social media they would not be able to comment on the image and or blog like Ifunny.

Here are some tips to help you survive social media

  1. Watch out for what you post because you never know who sees it.

  2. Do not engage in the internet trolls just do what I said like ignore them and delete that comment.

  3. The last one ladies and gents is to always make sure that you keep private information to yourself and never post on social media cause if you do it can ruin your life.

Surviving the Internet Trolls

The person I am online is a whole different person in person. I have different attitudes, a different personality, and more open. Being online I feel i'm able to express who I am since its my online account. Based on my appearance, I think people look at me different and probably think i'm just a normal girl. But once I meet somebody offline, I end up opening with them, giving them advice, and letting them know who I am. My mom gave me rules before posting anything online. I go by what she would say if she saw anything I put online. I also respect myself before putting up something that isn't my age, appropriate, or wouldn't help me in the future. The pros and cons of sharing online that it can be sent out to anyone anywhere. Regardless what you think of the post it would be change and switched to make you look like a bad person. In many situations people had lack of control for having their post spread all over. Once they post it and finally realize they made a bad decision, they decide to delete it and it gets out and they won't have control on what happens or what anyone says about it. That's how it becomes Permanence, it enter to be permanent online and the person won't be able to take it down or delete it. Immediacy has a big impact also because as soon as you post anything wrong or good, it's shared immediately all over. Many students and works have to go have a background check on their social media by their job, family, or anybody that's watching them. My thoughts on this is it's a good thing and helps people reflect on what happen and what they did wrong so they won't do it again. Many people are against that because they believe its free speech regardless if it's bad or good. Free speech is different in everybody eyes and especially what they say. Many fighting words are online which is unprotected by the first amendment. When it comes it comes to Libel, its protected. In my eyes that's when the internet trolls come out and begin to start arguments to destroy someone's happiness. They aren't happy with themselves and begin creating their own war.We can stop the war by confronting the trolls and speaking for people that aren't able to do that on their own. The pros and cons of posting anonymously makes issues and creates problems that don't need to happen. When it comes to the internet I believe people should watch what they say and what they post. This will make problems not happen and will maybe slow down bullying and change people's mind when it comes to being a troll online.

How To Survive Online

The person I am online is a lot of different Indian people. On the internet it shows Indian families or them succeeding in something. I think that other people would think that I am older than I actually am or they might think that I am from India because of the background. They might believe I lied to them or believe something else because what they looked up about me. I consider what is going on in the photo. I know that anyone can do anything to your photo with the right technology. I make sure that it is appropriate and make sure that anyone I don't want to see anything I don't let them see. The pros of sharing online are you may get some really good or nice feedback from people. The cons from sharing online are someone taking your photo and photoshopping it and reposting it. They could also show it someone else and make that person say terrible things about you for something you didn't even do. Some people don't think before they post. Some people just post for attention. You should want to post for fun or for anything positive. If you are not paying attention to what you are posting someone can easily screenshot the photo before you delete it and do something to it or send it to everyone they know. I think they should just ask your permission because somethings are private. People in the world these days are crazy and if they found out something you weren't you could get yourself in a lot of trouble. If you have nothing to hide you shouldn't have a problem but some people just don't feel comfortable. They don't even have to be hiding something they could just not like other people in their business. Free speech is the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint. Free speech is protected by the First Amendment but the U.S. Constitution does does protect Free speech. Another problem on the internet that you should watch out for are internet trolls. This is a Person who starts trouble to upset people. They do this by sending off topic messages in an online community. These trolls do it for their own entertainment. I think they have no life and are very petty. I believe a internet trolls goal is to shame or intimidate someone in front of a group of people online. For certain websites they just don't allow comments but for the websites that do you can try not to just feed to the trolls nonsense. Well first make sure it is an internet troll but after you do that report the troll to an op, administrator, or site owner. Then if there's an ignore button block them so you won't see their comments. If you are really good at ignoring people just ignore them and act like they are not their if their is no ignore button. You can also try to compliment the troll to throw them off their game or you can nicely just ask the troll to stop. DO NOT RESPOND TO THE TROLL YOU ARE FEEDING THEIR ENJOYMENT. Posting anonymously online can be good and bad. The pros of posting his way is if you post something about someone you won't get caught because they don't know who you are. The cons of posting this way is they could find someone to figure out who you are or do it themself if they are good with computers and expose you and make your life or your appearance really bad to people.

Tips:  Watch what you put online you don't know who is watching or looking at your post.

Be careful for Internet trolls.

Treat others the way you want to be treated.

A Freshman's Point of View on the Internet

Online, I appear to be a lesbian and it appears that I am in a relationship with someone. It also seems that I like to cook and I like to eat. I’m a fan of football, I’m a caring person and I like to joke. I love younger children, I love how they think, who they are as people, their imagination, personality and the way they grow. Another thing you can learn about me on the internet is that i’m somewhat a family person, I’m peaceful and I love my nephew dearly.

I think people would perceive me as being a cook, someone who cooks often or likes to. The thought isn’t all the way wrong, I like to cook but i’m not crazy about it. However, I do enjoy eating and I certainly am crazy about that. They could perceive me as wanting to have a child someday because I re-post a lot of newborn babies and most times my captions for those post are “one day” or similar to that. People could perceive me as being really close to my relatives, one or two people in my family I am very close to, one of those people being my father because on a daily basis I post about him and how great of a person he is.

Before I post anything on line, I greatly consider my future. I always think about how will this picture or this post effect my name or will it get me in any kind of trouble. Then I think about my family and  how they’d feel towards my post and how would people look at them for something I did. Then I consider people I interact with over the internet, who can see me, whose feelings I could hurt, and will this damage any opportunity I’ve been offered or would have been offered. Lastly I consider how would I feel if this was me. If I seen whatever i’m posting on another person’s social media, how might I have felt towards it.

My pros and cons of sharing online are:

Pros: I can express myself the way I want to express myself, I can post as many pictures as I want and remove them. I can let out my thoughts, I can agree and disagree on what people feel and are saying. I’m able to use my own mind, I don’t have to allow anyone access to my page and I can friend and unfriend anyone, then block them as well.

Cons: You can remove the picture from your view and maybe a few others but once it’s on the internet. You’re always going to see something you don’t like, you can count on the internet to throw something negative into your view. Someone is always going to be on the other end “hating on you”. There’s always someone out there ready to ruin your day or sprinkle their miserableness onto your post or turn something you said into something completely opposite. You have to choose your words very wisely and think about what you’re saying. I also feel that people overtime have started to compete with each other over the internet mentally, thoughts like “how can I look better than her, how could  get a boy like him to notice me or a girl like her, how can I be prettier, how can I wear the clothes she’s wearing, where could I find his shoes, I wish I had his or her piercing” and this list goes on. People are falling out of touch with who they are mentally, alone in a room with yourself. I know this because I am victim to it and/or I too have committed this crime and I think that it’s very unhealthy.

Lack of control, Permanence and Immediacy have an impact on our lives because when you have lack of control it means you don’t know how to discipline yourself or tell yourself no. That could result into bad things over and over again, you basically never learn your lesson. Another way of explaining Lack of control is not being in control of your post, for example the lady posted a picture of her daughter and the picture became out of her control, people started to make fun of her sick child. With permanence I think it’s a little dangerous that you’re on the internet forever once you put yourself up there because the days get crazier and crazier by the minute. Now and days with the new screenshot devices anyone can have your picture in their phone, people are sick and people are insane. Somewhere right now, any of us could be hanging up on someone’s wall, they could have save the picture got us blown up, made us into a poster more than once with more than one picture for multiple reasons, might be plotting to snatch us, to meet us, to be apart of our lives, could be a mental serial killer, honestly the possibilities are endless. As far as immediacy goes, I think people like not having to wait forever for a picture or post to load, to be posted or for them to be able to click on a video and watch it. Immediacy with me, i’m pretty cautious about it because if I was to do something illegal, just as immediate it is for me to pull up something, it’ll be immediate for a police officer to pull up my profile and find my full information and more.

My thoughts on social media background checks by potential employers varies on the company, If it’s someone like the government I absolutely think you should look into their life and check their social media to know how trustworthy they are, get a glimpse on who they are as people. Find out what they have going for them and get an insight on how they feel about certain things. I think it’s very important to do that kind of snooping around on a potential state worker. A place like McDonald's I however don’t agree is necessary to have to background check them. I think it’s their personal life. All their doing is taking orders and making a quick burger but it also depends on the person, in this economy you never know who is who and that makes it really hard to trust people.

Free speech is having permission to say anything you want whether it’s how you're feeling, your opinion or your unneeded comments. Free speech is having the privilege to share your ideas, thoughts and epiphanies with others, good or bad with no consequence. Some things that are protected is your personal information, information like your birthday, your age, your house address, your private messages, not a lot of things are really protected securely, it really depends on the website. One piece of information that is very protected is your social security number. Your social security number is very protected because someone could steal your identity and basically own your life, they can live under your name, say your children are theirs, your car is theirs, and the list goes on. A few things that aren’t protected are things like your pictures, your name, your phone number but again it depends on the website.

An internet troll is someone that spreads their negative energy over the internet, they’re internet users who comment disrespectful comments, tell you what you should and shouldn’t be doing, they’re people who start arguments with you, they are upsetting people. Their post are rude, foul and hurtful.

The goal of an internet troll is to definitely hurt your feelings and to make you feel bad, upset you. Their job is to make you feel wrong about what you think and who you are as a person.

A way we can stop trolling is by unfriending the person, blocking them or reporting them to the website owners and reviewers that check stuff like inappropriate post or spammers and it’s a possibility that they could delete their account.

The pros and cons of posting anonymously are:

Pros: Nobody knows who you are evidently because you're anonymous. You don’t have to worry about anyone pointing fingers at you because they have no idea who you are.

Cons: Some cons could be if you said something really good on a really important website, somebody important might be looking for you and then can’t find you but, I think that if it’s really important an authority or someone like that can track you and find out who you are. Another con would be what you don’t know who anyone else is. Just as you’re anonymous everyone else would be too so you don’t know who's reading what you're posting, who’s viewing you etc.

My top three tips to anyone who utilizes Social Media would have to be, Don’t share your personal business with anyone not even your family. Not through a comment, a direct message, or in code text. If you feel the need to tell someone something it’s always better to wait until you see them. That way good or bad there’s no evidence, no proof and no one can track you down or find out about anything like that. I know that direct messages may be private from the public eye sure but not from the owner of those websites so you really have to watch what you do on the internet. Another word of advice is take time to think about what you’re posting, who you're sharing it with, what you’re posting it too, does it need to be seen and does it need to be known and I think you should always think about will this hurt someone else’s feelings, to me, it’s like a principal. You don’t want to post anything that will follow you forever or that you’d mind following you forever, that you wouldn’t want to be there later down the line in your future because everyone knows the golden rule of the internet is Once is up there, it’s up there forever and that there’s no such thing as a delete button. My last rule is to overall be careful, technology is very rigged today and this world is crazy. I’d say treat the internet like your outside world, would you walk outside with no clothes on or under dress then don’t do it on the internet, I personally think it’s self disrespect but some people are different and enjoy being nudist, just an example. If you wouldn’t talk to strangers on the street then when a random person messages you on the internet I don’t think you should reply no matter what because if it’s important that person will find their way to you, maybe they’ll know your parent. Watch your surroundings, watch what you say and do because you never know who’s watching, as my English teacher Ms. Bentum said “We are always on stage.”

Social media survival guide

Online I appear as a boring person because i barely post anything on instagram. Before i post I think about If my dad should see this or not. And if this will impact me on anything. The pros and cons of sharing online are that your post can have a bad effect on you and your reputation and good thing is that you can express yourself on there. Lack of control can impact online lives because you can start being a different person online than you are in real life. I think companies should do a media background check because the potential employer will be representing you and your company.  Freedom of speech is expressing the way that you feel but something that is protected is your opinion. If your statement hurts someone or a company and if it is not true it is not protected by law. An internet troll is someone who intentionally hurts someone through the internet. The goals of internet trolls are to make someone have a reaction or to hurt people's feelings. We can stop internet trolling is  to have people hurt the troll back or to make a law saying that internet trolling cannot be allowed. The pros of posting online anonymously is that your identity is safe to the public but it is not safe to the authorities.

Tech Project

Online I am my self, really, maybe a bit more extroverted that i really am but other than that, not much else is different

I’m pretty sure people see me as an insightful anti-religious furry. Now that’s a weird title.

I usually consider if i want people to see this, who might be offended, that kind of stuff.

Well the pros are that you can share things fasted, you can connect with people from anywhere, and that it’s a lot easier. The cons (coooooooooooonnnnnnn, you get a virtual cookie if you get that reference) are that you usually have no control over who sees what you share, and you can never really tell if the person is real or not.

Immediacy has an impact by how fast things can be shared and viewed, Permanence because when something is on the internet it will usually be there forever, and Lack of Control has an effect because once content is out, it’s out of you hands.

Social media background checks are not the best nor the most accurate way of getting to know an employee but it’s the most reliable thing employers have.

Free speech is the ability to say whatever you want (minus a whole bunch of things, such free many wow). What isn’t protected is boils down to mostly hate speech, everything else is protected. It was explained to us in the lawyer site we read.

An internet troll is a nasty little bugger that likes to annoy people, like, internet mosquitoes…….. kind of.

A troll’s goal (hey i rhymed) is to annoy people, that’s it. There really harmless, well, Psychology Today doesn't think so, but those guys are doctors! What do they know!

“How can we stop internet trolls?” you ask, well, to your probable dismay, you can’t, a troll will always find a way, always.

Pro: You're more likely to speak your mind and use that free speech of yours Cons: You’re more likely to abuse that free speech of yours. For example, the guys who got fired over their tweets.

In tech class we're doing a project. I choose to do a business card. i drew my own picture and used InkScape to trace it. On InkScape i had to add the picture after i deleted the miniature image on the page. Then, I had to find out how to trace it so i could add another layer to the picture to add the words on. In order for me to trace the picture I used Bitman on InkScape. I used Bitman to customize the picture to where the detail would show the most. As you can see the picture I took of the drawing had a table in the background. I did the best i could to take out the background without clipping the picture and I didn't take another picture because I didn't want to waste time. I will take the image and have it printed on a shirt to showcase my project a little more.

To raise money so that a mini-course would be able to have all the necessary materials, we have decided to fund-raise, in the form of a game tournament. To participate in the tournament it will be $5 and all the money made will go to the mini-course. Donations will be accepted and would like as many people possible to participate to raise as much possible.
More details about the tournament will be posted soon.

SLAB XC Places 1st in Public League Meet #2

SLAB cross country runners continue to make their presence known in their first year as a team.   On Monday, 9/21, the SLAB XC Boys improved upon their previous 4th place finish to finish 1st overall in their race.    Cinque Harris lead the way for the rockets, running a PR of 20:21, followed by Sergio Ruiz, Camilo Ruiz, Jaycob Rodriquez, and Asaad Parsons.   Rounding out the finishers were Hector Tapia and newcomers Devon Williams and Brodie Bauman.

The SLAB XC Girls had another strong showing, but were a few runners short of placing in the meet.  Jacqueline Shepherd and Sameese Smith finished back to back, capturing 7th and 8th overall in their race.   Chelby Elam ran her first race on the Belmont Plateau and had a strong finish.

A "Stylish" Narrative

Devin Styles

“I live with my mother and my sister, I have a step-brother and a younger half brother. I mostly talk to my sister since I see her everyday and we argue a lot, I do think family is important but I’m not sure if I want a family of my own.

The biggest thing that ever happened to me was when I got appendicitis, after surgery I could barely walk or perform actions by myself. I had to have a tube inserted through my nose into my stomach, I had to get a lot of needles, it made me appreciate everyday actions. What I like most about myself is that I don’t really care what everyone thinks is cool, or whatever, I kinda just do my own thing and make decisions that will help me best later on.

My favorite subject is Biochem, only because it involves science and observations which I’m good at. I do think school is important, because life literally revolves around what you did in school, how you did and if you’ll get a well-paying job later after you’ve finished school. What I like most about school is being able to meet people from different places and of different nationalities than myself.

I do believe in a God, I don’t pray much though, nor do I follow an organized religions. This belief that there’s a God gives inspiration but not following a religion specifically feels like it makes me feel more free and less forced to do anything like attending church etc.

My ethnic background is African-American and most of my friends are of the same ethnicity.

The easiest thing about being a teenager is being able to express who you are, and what you stand for, because you can pretty much do this through anything, clothes, drawing, singing, rapping, writing. The toughest thing about being a teenager is probably having to try to balance your life between school and your own personal life, because this usually boils down to right and wrong, like I want to do my homework but at the same time I want to hang out with friends or play video games.

9/11 occurred during my lifetime, I guess it impacted my education some since we had to learn about it, otherwise it had no strong impact on my life. The attack has not made me fearful, honestly but it does trigger a lot of thoughts in my head. I don’t associate the attack with anyone around me, because that’d be offensive and they took part in none of 9/11. I haven’t changed anything in my life since the attack.

I’d say Playing soccer makes me the happiest, because I am freed from any stress that I might have especially from school. My biggest fear is definitely between heights and being stuck in the middle of the ocean. I don’t have anything that bothers me about myself.

Yes I could make an impact on the world/ life I could probably change the way every looked at things, because when everyone’s looking at something one way, I tend to bring attention to the other side of the situation. What I like most about myself is that I don’t really care what everyone thinks is cool, or whatever, I kinda just do my own thing and make decisions that will help me best later on.

9th Grade Summer Reading 2015

SLA Beeber 9th Grade Summer Reading 2015

Dear Incoming Ninth Grader,

Welcome to SLA! Before coming to school in September we'd like you to read one of the following books: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Sherman Alexie), Everyday (David Levithan), or The House of the Scorpion (Nancy Farmer).

While you may get the book from the library, we strongly suggest that you purchase your

choice text, as we will be referring to it in English classes in September. We are selling all

three titles at discounted prices on New Family Night to make obtaining summer reading easy

and effortless. Of course, feel free to read them all! They are all so great!

Below are some questions to help you navigate your novel and help you prepare to discuss it

with your classmates and teachers. As you may already know, SLA utilizes guiding questions

that help focus our studies and make learning more meaningful for us all. As you read your

book, think about the following larger questions as they apply to the characters, action,

conflicts, and resolutions in your choice text and also as they apply to your life. Part of active

reading includes some writing. Prepare to hand in a journal consisting of at least eight entries,

each one longer than a half page. Before you write, consider the following questions to explore

in your journal. Each entry could be a response to a question as it relates to the book. Include

your own personal responses to these questions, and how these questions might apply to your

choice text. This will be collected in September.

• What is family?

• What is the power of friendship?

• What does it mean to be a caregiver/mother/father?

• What is education and where can it exist?

• What is love?

• How does a person become evil?

•In what ways can the line between good and evil be blurred?

• How do you justify the idea that a person can be both good and evil at the same time?

• Who is a survivor? Why?

• What does it mean to be human?

• How can children create their own paths in a world run by the adults?

Soundstation

1) Describe your project.
My project was to create a song on Soundstation Studios with different tunes that were provided for me.

2) What did you learn while completing this project?

I learned I don't really have a good ear for music. And making music isn't as easy as it sounds. But I love the creativity of it anyway.

 3) What was the hardest part about completing this project?

The hardest part of completing the project was trying to fit tunes together so that they sound well together.

4) What was the most fun/exciting part?

The most fun/exciting part of creating this song was listening and playing around with tunes that were given to me.

5) If you were to do this project over again, what would you do differently?

If I were to this again I think I would redo my song again and actually have an account on Soundstation that I can log in and out of.
