Ashton Woodson's Senior Capstone

Posted by Ashton Woodson in Senior Capstone · Leaness · ILP/TFI/CAP on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 12:01 am

Throughout the year I've been working on big project, known as a capstone. I experienced a lot of hurdles when it came to completing this project. I very indecisive when it came to deciding on what I wanted to do for my capstone. I knew that I wanted a project that benefited others. But, do something that I was passionate about and enjoy doing. I went through a ton of ideas for this project. With that being said, for my senior capstone I decided to make a video about natural hair. I love natural hair and what it stands for. I’m very passionate about natural hair and I love editing video. The inspiration for this project was my TED talk I did in my Art of Short Story class. I wanted my video to be in a YouTube video style. Meaning, I want it to be fun and informative about my subject. In my video I include cool music, animation, clips and images. With my topic of natural hair I wanted to talk about how it plays apart in the African American community. I realized when creating my project that it can mean so many different things. With this natural hair video I talked about hair discrimination, the history of natural hair and I give some tips on natural hair. I you enjoy my project just as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Mya Bulgin & Iris Wilson Capstone

For our capstone, the vision that we had was to address and explain serious issues high schoolers are faced with in a way that a younger audience can easily comprehend;we accomplished this through telling of multiple stories which we then compiled into one storybook. The book is divided between three main topics including advocating for yourself, the balance between mental health and school and (whatever the third story is). At the end of each tale, there is a page which details the big ideas and lessons that could be pulled from the story, hopefully prompting the reader to reflect on that. The process of creating this book could described as having three distinct stages; research, story mapping and revision. We were already fairly well informed about the issues we wanted to write about, so the focus of our research was more about how to address such complex problems in a simple way. Once we got a better understanding of how to do that, we had to move onto to actually solidifying storyline details, which took a lot more time because we had to make sure we were only writing things that could also be shown through illustrations. Thankfully, the editing phase was the shortest, as it mostly focused on the aesthetic aspects of the book and it’s quality. This project taught us a lot about how to communicate more effectively in terms of reaching an audience and about how each experience we have is a lesson.

Diamond Hannah & Vernika Barrow's Capstone

Abstract
The senior capstone process for us has been nothing but full of surprises, challenges, and new beginnings. We put together a program with intentions of establishing relationships with the freshman females for motivational purposes, etc. We will go a long way, for we have learned has taught us about stepping out of our comfort zones while encouraging others to do the same. The fact that neither one of us feel as though we had positive role models close in age to look up to as we went on our journey through high school, made us want to give back to our community and serve as role models to at least some of the freshman girls. Building relationships with some of the freshman girls have been very exciting for us. We felt very helpful being able to answer questions and give valuable information to the girls and the process was even more interesting considering we were able to gain information from them too. To show others what we have done, we’ve put together a presentation that goes into depth about the process, what we did with the girls and what we’ve gotten out of this experience. We intend to continue to build relationships with these girls beyond our high school careers.

                                                                Abstract
For our Senior Capstone project, we decided to work together in rehabbing an entire house in Port-Richmond area. I was in charge of all construction in the house and Zoe was the interior designer. Zoe and I have always loved using our hands and creativity to make things, and even more so when that thing could be useful to others. I enjoy doing the structural aspects where I have to always think ahead on what I’m making. Zoe enjoys taking simple things and her own artistic views and implementing them in big ways. Putting these things into consideration, we felt that doing something as big as this, was a great idea. Not to mention that we are both pursuing careers in these fields going into college next year. There was a great deal we had to figure out along the way and we knew from the beginning that this was not something we could do alone. We hired peers from school to work with us on the weekends and had to cut things from our own schedules often to get more time in the house. Our mentor, John Staack of Staack Moore Woodworking, was incredibly helpful throughout this whole 11-month process! He provided us with all the resources we needed to bring this house back to life. Even now as the Capstone presentations are coming soon, there is still some work to be done in the house before the open house in June. But, Zoe and I are seeing this through to the end and, when it’s all good and done this is an experience we will never forget and always appreciate.

For my capstone I worked with a student who has ASD. Every Thursday I would go and talk to him, play charades, draw, and even just do check ins. As time went on I started enjoying the time spent with the student so my time with him increased to twice a week. I started keeping a record of the different things I did with him and different drawings that were made. I love helping others and when I come in and help this particular student I am able to help him feel comfortable in his own community. I know how hard it is making friends and to socialize with people and that needs to be changed.

When I first met the student I actually thought it would be difficult working with him because I myself am shy even after being apart of this community for 4 years so I know how he feel for his first year. I still get shy but working with this student has been a pleasure because we both have been stepping out of our comfort zone with each other by playing charades and acting different things out with one another, by showing our art skills and even just making conversation about how our week has been. Many people don’t know what ASD is or what having autism means so here is my awareness presentation on what ASD is, effects of having ASD, different types and the relationship it has with social skills.

Stephanie Devlin & Mercedes Blades Capstone Project

Posted by Stephanie Devlin in Senior Capstone · Leaness · ILP/TFI/CAP on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 8:12 pm

For our senior project, we decided to help and teach a lesson at a middle school. We’ve always had a love for helping others, especially children. Out of all the elementary and middle schools around Philadelphia, we felt the most tied to Science Leadership Academy Middle School. Since we’ve both attended SLA for the last four years, we felt entitled to work with younger versions of us and see how they incorporate the five core values (research, inquiry, collaboration, presentation and reflection.). Despite some miscommunication and traveling issues, we made the best out of the time we got to spend with these students. This was such an amazing learning experience for us since Stephanie wants to major in education, and Mercedes wants to major in psychology. In the beginning of the year we got to help students one on one with support if they needed it, some of the things included: helping them record for their podcasts, reading assignments, and just overall just getting to know the students’ better. For our final product we created an lesson that dealt with origami hearts, to see which way the children learn better. The goal we had was to use this lesson to see what type of learning is easier for children based upon how their brain works (Mercedes) and the best skills for teaching children (Stephanie). This is an experience that we will never forget, and we will always be thankful for the opportunity we were given to work with these students. Special thanks to SLA Middle School, Mr.Boyle, but most importantly Ms.Hamilton for allowing us to work with her students!

4533114_1435619620.5679

For the past four years, I have seen myself, friends, and the whole senior class grow into young adults. We went from being strangers to friends and friends to family. It has been a process to lead us this far with the drama and nonsense. We lost a few people on the way but gained a lot more.  The reason I am saying this is because I am doing a documentary on the entire senior class. When we first received this project, I had no idea what I wanted to do. Then the thought came to my mind to do a documentary. I found this interesting to do because it’s different from what other people would do. Also, it would be a great way to look back at our growth into one whole video instead of multiples. I know when my classmates see the final product they might get a little teary eyed and I only say this because the faster graduation approaches the more emotional we get and it’s no other way to sit and watch you and your friends grow together in four years. This was not easy as I thought it would be. I had to find a lot of old images and videos from others and myself.  That was not my only focus. My final plan is to ask all the senior teachers how they feel to see us grow as much as we did. Overall,I hope it turns out the way I want.

Capstone

As a musician, I was constantly told to step outside of my comfort zone. Whether it’s attempting a new genre, singing a different song, or getting up in front of a bigger crowd. The obvious choice for my capstone would be some sort of performance of my own creations, but this is not what I wanted to do. To completely step outside of my comfort zone, I decided to leave music almost completely out of the equation.

For my capstone, I decided to create a carnival for the school to enjoy. The reason why I chose this was because of two reasons. I was not familiar with how to put this together, and it felt like it would be a good challenge for me. Also it was to let everyone have a fun and stress-free end of the year. It was a good way to say goodbye to the place that taught me much of what I needed to know in my teenage years.

I started this project in September, when we were trying to fundraise for other students projects. I spent almost every day planning, researching, and building everything I needed for the carnival. I am now in my final steps for putting on the final show. This is for the class of 2018.

Mallika Saini Capstone

Last year, there was a large national Sikh campaign going around the United States. The goal of the campaign was to raise awareness of Sikhs. Most often, they're misunderstood by the mass and under-taught, if at all, by public schools. Moreover, the Sikh turban (which is why most people are targeted) is not just a headgear, but our greatest pride. And, I would like my community to know the difference. I am not throwing my Muslim friends under the bus, but just bringing out a reality that is much needed.

As a Sikh myself, being inspired by the campaign developed a better understanding of the Sikh community in my community, to project the positive image and profile of the Sikh community.

I created a small, about twenty to twenty-five minute, presentation that brought awareness to my community about Sikhs. I presented to all my school and St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. After, my presentations to leave the message behind, I recreated a painting that portrays the same message. I've added my own elements, but the base of the painting, I take no credit for. Besides a painting, I created a website set-up as a presentation style to those interested in Sikhs.

After months on this capstone, I'm so proud to finish. It didn't end like my initial hope, but I still completed all of my goals. I grew as a public speaker by speaking in front of a large audience and spread awareness on Sikhs.
