Atmosphere: The cool air along with heavy rain then forms spinning air currents inside the cloud which could drop down from the clouds forming a tornado.

Geosphere: These strong winds can pick up rocks affecting the geosphere

Biosphere: Strong winds can pick up rocks and can injure the biosphere such as humans, animals, and plants.

Hydrosphere: Tornadoes, which are violently rotating columns of air extending from the bottom of a severe thunderstorm, have very little impact on the hydrosphere. Tornadoes are small in both their areal coverage and in their duration, usually lasting about 10 minutes on average.

Understanding what causes tornadoes and understanding how they can affect the environment allows you to be able to react properly if ever in a situation where you need to be prepared for a tornado. In order to create a sustainable future, changes in human behavior would definitely have to happen to be as though, climate and global warming are greatly impacting the planet and the earth’s system cycles.

Earth systems sort of work as a chain reaction, when something happens In the earth’s atmosphere it affects everything else. For example hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, and geosphere are all spheres that can be helpful and harmful to the environment. For example, when rain falls from the clouds in the atmosphere, that rain can be used to form streams and rivers that provide drinking water for wildlife and humans. An understanding of environmental science can aid in handling natural disasters because the more you understand the better chance you have of preventing catastrophic effects. For example, this could be things like knowing where to go when natural disasters occur and knowing the steps to take when they do happen. It is important that we as humans know these events can occur at any given moment, so having an understanding of what you are dealing with is important. The best way that we can move forward and create a sustainable future in dealing with natural disasters is to make sure that we are taking care of the environment. I feel like our group did a really good job of explaining our project and giving a visual representation of our project.

Some effort we can make to create a sustainable future is to understand the issues we’re having now. One good example is global warming because all the factories and cars we’re using release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which in turn raises the temperature and has many harmful effects on us. A thing I was surprised to learn during our project is that when forest fires are started (by humans and lightning) it also releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as well. One thing we can do in order to make a sustainable future for us all is to practice safe campfire practices and maybe switch to electric cars so we can lower temperatures caused by climate change.

  1. How do the earth systems affect each other? Because of the intense rains brought on by the increasing water, the hydrosphere and atmosphere interact during storms. The hydrosphere might potentially destroy objects like buildings, trees, or anything else on land when it interacts with the geosphere. Because changes in an animal’s habitat may result in its death or have an impact on it, the hydrosphere and biosphere interact.

  2. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? If something horrible happens to one, it most often has a negative impact on another. Because we understand how the world and its systems function and why these things occur, environmental science may help in addressing natural catastrophes. From there, we can determine what to do when certain events occur.

  3. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? By making purchases from eco-friendly products, we can achieve this. In order to lessen our carbon footprint, support regional sustainability organizations and programs, and use less energy at home, many of us are already making intentional efforts to buy better.

3-If we are careful to avoid disrupting the systems, such as polluting the air or the water, we can only do good for the planet. Recycling, seed planting, using long-lasting light bulbs, and reducing household energy consumption are some actions we can do to create a sustainable future.

I would say as far as hurricanes, we should have more “hurricane-proof” items like ceilings, appliances, doors, and windows. for others, we can invest in having more and better shelters for these disasters as long as food preparations in case of a power outage.

Timothy Karhnak-Glasby | Natural Disasters

Essential Questions: 1) Earth Systems affect each other by cycling matter and energy between themselves, feeding interactions and reactions on a micro and macro scale. Said interactions and reactions impact the Systems in their own ways and can create cascading effects that in turn cause more reactions. 2) An understanding of environmental sciences can aid in handling natural disasters because it allows us to predict how interactions and reactions will take place and how natural disasters can cause more interactions and reactions. This includes how to prevent natural disasters from causing a cascade effect that in turn can cause more natural disasters. 3) In order to create a sustainable future we need to clamp down on the burning of fossil fuels and other such things that cause climate change because climate change is causing changes in how the earth’s systems interact, making it harder to predict how natural disasters and other interactions will play out, often resulting in more damage both from a lack of proper preparation and because the disasters are just getting worse.

I’m not exactly surprised by my findings, I was already aware of most of this information because I looked into wildfires over the summer after seeing a bunch of memes about how California is always on fire. As for the project itself I’m ambivalent, I don’t particularly like the project but I don’t dislike it either, its just something I have to get done, and that’s the extent of my feelings about it.

Milah Norfleet Capstone

Our capstone was based off of the top of me and my partner Kayla wanted to make a difference for kids that were struggling in high school. We noticed over time during quarantine, the attitude of our peers had entirely changed. So our essential question became “how can we make school more confident when it comes to mental health?” At first we were going to create a mini course so that people could talk about their feelings or their day or just how they were feeling. After doing a lot of research we realize that not everyone will be comfortable enough to speak up or have the confidence so we just created an anonymous Google form that students would be able to talk on and get responses from others. We also did interviews throughout the year talking to kids at school about Their feelings and how school was for them. “Or like on a scale from one to 10 how are you feeling today?” Overall I feel like education can really affect our mental health and we should find methods to soothe the stress.

Capstone

My capstone involved learning an instrument to answer the question “what does music mean to me?” While I did learn a good portion of the instrument, I ultimately ended up with no guitar to play. I then decided that I’d try and contact the School District of Philadelphia in order to see what it’d take to get some sort of music elective or program or anything set up here so that future students could answer this question themselves. Despite my best efforts, I got no response from them which leads me to believe that if anyone at this school wants to get music into our school that they need to be pestered further.

Asbestos PSA

Our PSA personifies asbestos to display the danger that it poses in many areas. Through the video, asbestos strikes in old buildings, that were constructed prior to its ban on being used in house paint. I think that we could have tried to incorporate more research into the PSA. We made asbestos-man suffocate his victims, but there was a lot of other information about how asbestos can be harmful that we did not include.

Nathaniel Baker Capstone

For my capstone I collaborated with Joshua to create pictures to spread awareness and brighten up the community. I wanted to do this because it is something I struggled with a lot in high school and if I were to leave this year I wanted to leave behind something to help those who will eventually struggle with this problem in the future. It was a really tough process that really opened our eyes to our community and just how dim the world around us was. The biggest problem I faced personally was deciding from right and wrong and what could be seen as art in my eyes. It was hard to really express myself Our mission was to brighten up SLA but I wanted to go a step further and brighten the community as well. I learned that there is no right and wrong in art and that taking any steps to brigthen the community are good ones attached below are the photos taken and the entire process documented.

Charles Hart Capstone

I decided to make a website designed to teach people about music theory. Our capstones were supposed to contribute to ‘our community’ in some way, and this was the best way that I could think of to apply a something that I knew a lot about in a way that would benefit the community. The biggest challenge was finding the motivation to actually do the work. In the end, I was able to complete everything I needed to in a weekend. I think that the final result works as a good resource to teach someone music theory from the very beginning.

In our opinion, the SLA community value brand names a lot more than a well rounded style. We wanted to show that when not considering name brands you can discover more sustainable fashion options. Justin Gatewood Capstone

My name is Justin Gatewood and for my senior capstone, I decided to begin my own workout journey, also creating an informational website for others to take inspiration from and gain knowledge. Mostly all my life, I’ve always been the smallest, weakest link and have always wanted to get into bettering my body to build up my confidence and ultimately feel better about myself. First, I had to thoroughly educate myself on the topic before jumping in because I knew virtually nothing about working out or fitness in general. I found many reputable sources all over the internet throughout my journey and am glad to be educated on it, though I wouldn’t call myself an expert. I found and created a workout plan that worked for me and on the way purchased things that helped me, such as dumbbells, pre-workout powders, and protein powders. Honestly, I didn’t put on as much muscle or weight as I wanted to but I’m still happy with my results. Working out is something I’ve always wanted to get into my whole life, but just never had the motivation or knowledge to do. When I really got into it, I realized it was fun and felt rewarding, even when I didn’t see any progress. I feel like this is something that I should’ve gotten into a long time ago and I’m happy that I finally did. Overall, I am happy with what I’ve accomplished and what I will continue to do, and I’m glad I have found an outlet to share it with others through my capstone.

Samuel Cadbury Capstone

My name is Samuel Cadbury. I have been a film lover for years and aspired to become a filmmaker. I haven’t had much professional experience other than a film class at Pratt Institute. I started a film minicourse at the SLA Beeber middle school because I felt that younger students need more film experiences. As a class we made a storyline for a Star Wars fan film called Star Wars Fallen Kin. The story is about a brother and a sister who grow up on opposite sides of the force. The story had to be cut down due to our lack of resources and time. At the time of me making this, I am currently still working on the credits. Josh Sidener Capstone

For my senior Capstone project, I chose to create a visual novel type game. I wanted to create something that anyone could interact with online, that would have some kind of impact on the person. The biggest struggle I ran into is my own ambition. I wanted to create the best thing that I possibly could, and be really proud of my work, so I ended up spending way more time than I had planned on finalizing the story. I went through many different ideas, before arriving at the one that I currently have, and this was a large setback for me. This has also caused this project to become an ongoing project instead of a finished one, which isn’t what I originally planned. However, this gives me a lot more time and freedom to do what I want with the project, and removes the stress of deadlines from me. Throughout the process, I’ve learned how good it can feel to create something that is relevant to myself as a person, and my experiences. I’ve also learned how hard this is, and how easy it is to get caught up questioning if every little thing is perfect.

Ty'ona Crocker Capstone

Hi, my name is Ty’ona Crocker and for my capstone I decided to combine the topics of mental health and photography. The reason why I chose to do this is because when I wasn’t in the best place mentally during my sophomore year, I wanted to find something that would give my mind an outlet. I ended up finding this amazing hidden passion for photography. It helped me to capture moments in the world through my eyes and how I perceive them. The point of my project is that I understand that when you are not at your best mentally it’s hard to find yourself to be interested or engaged with anything. Mimi Fink Capstone

With my capstone I aimed to find a middle ground between the artist behind a piece of media and the audience that receives it. Specifically, I looked to find the answer to the question, “How can I entertain a wide group of people while also focusing on my own creative input?”. This inquiry question is relevant to me as an aspiring film student going into Temple University’s Film and Media Arts program next year. I felt that having a deeper understanding of artistic philosophy might better help guide my learning and career.
