I decided to have a young entrepreneur-led fashion show for My Senior Capstone Project. I reached out to two other designers, and we planned and brainstormed the theme/concept and every other aspect of the show. The fashion show took place May 9th @ sla Beeber Auditorium. Organizing my first fashion show as my capstone project has been an invaluable experience, filled with challenges, self-reflection, and personal growth. Despite the outcome not aligning with my initial vision, I have come to appreciate the journey as an opportunity for learning and development. It taught me the importance of effective communication, leadership, and adaptability. More importantly, it highlighted the need to embrace imperfections and view setbacks as stepping stones toward growth. Moving forward, I am grateful for the support received and excited to apply the lessons learned from this experience in future endeavors.

My group and I (Caprice and Collin), designed a mental health website that allows users to express their feelings in a healthy way. Users can communicate about mental health-related subjects on our website “CanWeTalk” using the chat feature. Other features of the website include sections like the “Learn more” and “Self-care” pages. Visitors can find a list of definitions for several common mental illnesses on the “Learn more” page. We felt it was critical to inform our visitors about the many terms in psychology and how illnesses may affect someone’s mental stability. Additionally, our team felt it was important to add a “Self-care” section to the website. In order to better their mental health at home, we wanted viewers to have the opportunity to learn more about this topic. On this page of the website, you may find tips on how to meditate as well as links to products you can buy that could potentially benefit you. After our website went live, we made flyers to distribute within the SLA building. We also set up an Instagram account for “CanWeTalk” with more promotions and advice. We push for more healthy approaches to address mental health because we value it. As one of SLA’s core values, collaboration is something we also appreciate. Our organization seeks to unite every demographic, that being adults and students.

The aspect of this capstone project about which we are most proud is how much we learned from the new students we worked with. With the students, we were able to make new friends and occasionally play games. It’s been a great experience working with all of those kids, but what makes us the happiest is being able to support those students in maintaining their work and grades. Our commitment and diligence paid off in this capstone project, not just in terms of the project’s outcome but also in the friendships and priceless experiences you have made. This project has been extremely beneficial to the community because it has enabled EL students to succeed and receive the assistance they require without feeling excluded or guilty for asking questions. It has also helped us become better tutors in the future, and we are so happy that we have had the opportunity to serve as tutors to other students. Once more, congratulations on your accomplishments!

Together with Ola and Saif, we created a musical production course that taught kids how to make their own music. Our goal was to produce a visual and audio experience that will appeal to people from various ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. We aimed to motivate the upcoming generation of musicians and artists by imparting our experience and expertise. Not only do we now understand the importance of cooperation but also the importance of curriculums. The experience has been great because of the freedom of breaking out of traditional school schedules and letting kids have some fun in an environment they’d dread.

Originally For My capstone project I was planning on doing a sports program for the students at SLAB, but after careful consideration I changed my plan and decided to help the middle school baseball team at SLAB. I often had talks with the high school baseball on what ideas I had to help out and he was on board with all of them. The reason I wanted to do this with the middle school is because I want to become a physical trainer and this project was a good way for me to get familiar with working with people on their skill set. This was a really fun project to do, it was fun to work with the middle schooler and answering any questions they had, and it was nice to see them having fun playing the game.

It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do for my capstone but I knew I wanted to learn about a job in the medical field. I finally came up with an idea to make a website that will help others like myself learn about what medical job they wanted to pursue. This audience is aimed at 9th-11th graders who felt like they don’t know exactly who they want to be. This capstone project also allowed me to do research of my own and learn more about what I was interested in.

My capstone project is a book club targeted at 2nd–8th graders. I targeted, younger kids because I wanted them to develop better reading habits. My first meeting was very cool and subtle; we introduced ourselves and did icebreakers. Then they filled a survey out with books they are interested in and the genres they are interested in. I did the club at the middle school I attended, and the principal helped tremendously. She helped pay for books and helped get students into my club. I learned that younger kids are really difficult to try to help. It was definitely a fun experience, but I would have done a couple things differently if I were to do it again.

when looking at our school the school needed some color. Instead of the dull hallways that we always wonder about and always tell our peers we need color or something to spice it up. So what better to do than rebuild a bookshelf and leave something behind us? We wanted to give something to the students other than something that has to do with schoolwork. We wanted to give students new books so that when they want to escape the reality of school they can enter another one by getting a book. So we had to sand and paint the bookshelf and put the hands of the seniors on it so that they can leave something behind before they leave for good. then the last part was to put the books in and call it a day.

For my project, I wanted to help kids with autism better communicate and show their emotions. I did this by working at my mom’s job, Helping Hand Family, by working with the children individually. I would observe their behavior and get to learn all the different ways for things. I would also help teach them how to ask for something even if it’s not through speech. Even pointing to what they wanted was acceptable, as long as they communicated without outbursts or angry gestures.

I am Drew Dunham-Snipes and for my capstone, I wrote a guide on being a student-teacher at SLA Beeber. This guide highlights some of the difficulties of student teaching by addressing solutions to the shared struggle. I compiled these student teaching recommendations by asking fellow TAs for their advice to future student teachers. It includes a couple of defining strategies and acts as a resource to help TAs gain a goal or mission. I learned how much work teaching is and have gained experience of being in the classroom from a teacher’s perspective. I wanted to share that perspective and offer solutions to situations that I have handled successfully. Here is the guide:

My capstone project was to establish a weekly pop-up community food distribution to alleviate the food shortage in my neighborhood. My research included scholarly publications, internet reports, and crucial interviews with members of the neighborhood community and charitable groups, especially BunnyHop Philadelphia. The systemic aspect of food shortage, the practicalities of food distribution, and community-specific requirements were all addressed by this multimodal study strategy. I used this information to create a sustainable, scalable business that successfully provided locals with access to reasonably priced, wholesome food alternatives. Weekly pop-ups were held, and they were continually improved based on community input and ongoing reflection on the project’s success. This initiative placed a strong emphasis on teamwork and leadership, and it had a significant influence on my neighborhood by emphasizing the value of a healthy diet and building better community ties. I gained essential knowledge about logistics, community involvement, and the need for ongoing improvement in any endeavor. The initiative illustrated the need for teamwork, planning, and placing an emphasis on good eating while providing practical insights into professions in community involvement, nonprofit administration, and the food and culinary sectors.

In my Capstone project, I took on the role of operating the Ultimate Frisbee Club at the Science Leadership Academy (SLA). The project aimed at nurturing leadership skills and fostering community building through the medium of ultimate frisbee, a sport that uniquely blends athletic skill with principles of fair play and self-officiation. The process involved conducting comprehensive research on leadership theories, team dynamics, and the technicalities of the sport, informed by expert insights, and community-based organizations. Practical execution encompassed regular training sessions, incorporating both frisbee skills and leadership activities, fostering a learning environment that encouraged communication, collective responsibility, and problem-solving. Through this immersive experience, I enhanced my leadership capabilities and gained valuable insights into organizing and managing a community sports club. Additionally, I discovered the power of sports as an effective tool to teach life skills, promote community engagement, and create a supportive and inclusive environment. The project left a positive impact on the SLA community, inspiring students to engage in physical activity while developing leadership skills.

This capstone focuses on paying kindness forward both within and outside of the Science Leadership Academy @Beeber community while passing out bracelets and pursuing an Instagram account for the project as well. To both Khayla and I this was more a movement and it was also seen as an escape making the bracelets as this part of the overall process was the most therapeutic and completely free for peers and members of various communities to support. Our main focus was getting people in our community to tell us what kindness meant to them. The best part of this entire experience definitely has to be brightening the days of those who have been gifted a bracelet to show our kindness as well as pay it forward with empathy and various acts of selflessness, not to mention this was a completely non-profit organization. As the end of the 2023 school year ends for seniors such as myself, I have understood on a more personal level the importance of kindness and simply paying it forward. The concept of paying kindness forward gained popularity through the phrase “pay it forward,” which was popularized by Catherine Ryan Hyde’s novel and subsequent film adaptation, both titled “Pay It Forward.” The idea behind it is to promote altruism, empathy, and compassion in society by encouraging individuals to perform acts of kindness without expecting anything in return, with the hope that the recipients will continue the cycle by helping others. By paying kindness forward, you contribute to a positive ripple effect, spreading acts of goodwill throughout the community. It emphasizes the power of small gestures and highlights the potential to make a difference in someone else’s life.

At Science Leadership Academy@Beeber, capstone projects are an integral part of the learning experience. These projects are designed to make a lasting impression on the student and the school, while not taking away from the regular curriculum. This was especially true for my capstone project.

My team and I tackled the important subject of financial literacy, with the goal of showing our classmates the importance of financial freedom. We believed that this knowledge was essential to making informed decisions, and wanted to ensure that our peers had the same opportunities that we did.

To make our project as engaging as possible, we developed creative assignments tailored to our students. We created quizzes, worksheets, and presentations to ensure that everyone was engaged and learning. We also provided real-world examples of financial freedom to illustrate our points.

Our capstone project provided us with an invaluable experience that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. We learned how to teach, collaborate, and communicate effectively, while also gaining an insightful understanding of the world of finance.

I chose my capstone project easily because I’ve always wanted to create a safe and supportive environment for 9th graders, something I felt was lacking when I was in their shoes at SLA. To achieve this, I initiated a mini course where 9th graders can connect and feel secure around upperclassmen. Through this project, I aim to foster peer learning and instill a positive mindset about their future, emphasizing the importance of each academic year. Additionally, I want 9th graders to have a mentor figure outside of school staff to turn to whenever they need guidance. By creating a positive environment both inside and outside the classroom, we can make a lasting impact. Personally, my capstone experience as a dedicated athlete participating in squash and flag football simultaneously has been a journey of growth, self-discovery, and accomplishment. Balancing both sports, employing effective time management, and overcoming challenges have instilled a sense of pride in my achievements. This experience has reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance, dedication, and excelling in multiple areas. These invaluable lessons will guide me as I face future obstacles. Overall, our project has had numerous benefits for the community. It has provided a nurturing space where students feel comfortable, fostering collaboration, communication, and unity among participants. These positive experiences have extended beyond the project, strengthening the bond among educators, students, and families. Witnessing the excitement and engagement of the students validates the importance of such projects in creating a thriving and inclusive community.

For my senior project, I had a vision of a revolutionary program that would artistically inject creativity and harmony into our educational atmosphere. I wanted to build a place where the whole class of 2023 could actively participate, fostering a feeling of community and a common goal. The objective was to make our school corridor more cheerful and to turn it into a center for learning new information, gaining more knowledge, and developing critical thinking abilities. To do this, I started working on a project that would let Slabeeber’s future students express themselves effectively and individually. My classmate and I started working together to create a large-scale creative mural that would reflect our shared vision and capture the essence of our graduating class. A portion of the artwork was given to each pupil or group, allowing for unique expression while upholding a unifying concept.

SLA at Beeber is home to many clubs, sports, extracurriculars, and other activities. Fitting to this theme of the community at SLA Beeber, I took on trying to establish the school’s gardening club since being stopped as a result of the pandemic. The purpose of my Capstone project was to revive the school’s gardening club and have it set up for the incoming class this fall and other students in the school. My plan for bringing back the school’s gardening club was to discuss with Ms. Sasso what needed to be done and planning stuff for next year. This was not my original plan and is actually the third thing I thought of doing, but I think it turned out better than I thought it would have. The actual club was never officially put into place this year, but I decided on organizing everything I figured would be needed to be prepared to start it up again next year. The Capstone project overall is a dense task and was tough to go into with no plan but after I just decided on something that I think would be useful and give back to the school, it was all straightforward from there. In the end, I do hope that my plans for the gardening club will be carried out and that a difference was made in putting in the work to restore it.

My Senior Capstone Project was a student news Instagram page that was created by me and my partner Suhailah Rice. Before creating this page our idea originally started out as a newspaper. However, we decided that using the internet to create this platform would be more efficient and pleasing to younger viewers. Overall, disregarding the minor setbacks that we faced while completing our project we have taken many things from it and had an enjoyable experience when creating the page.

Updating a school sports page is a crucial endeavor that can have a significant impact on the overall engagement and connection with the school’s athletic programs. In today’s fast-paced digital era, it is essential for schools to maintain an up-to-date and user-friendly sports page to keep students, parents, and the community informed and involved.

For my Senior Capstone Project, I worked with Harmony Smith to create a student news Instagram account. At the end of our junior year, we were inspired to create a project involving student news. Despite many obstacles we’ve faced throughout the school year trying to complete this project, we enjoyed the experience of creating it.

Our guiding question was “How can the SLA Beeber community connect?”. When planning and executing the project we made sure to be not only thoughtful but intentional in what we did.
