Help The North Dakotan's

The Dakota Access Pipeline is a proposed underground oil pipeline, which spans for over 1,134 miles.

The Dakota Access Pipeline is controversial because people don’t believe it’s necessary and it can harm the environment.

When you think of the role that social media plays in environmental justice, let’s take it a step back and think about the role social media plays in social justice.

Standing Rock Indian Reservation is a Hunkpapa, Lakota and Yanktonai Dakota Native American Reservation.

The Dakota Access Pipeline has plans to go through the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.

The article “Norway’s Largest Bank Sells Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline Company”, is an article that talks about how DNB is in favor of the North Dakota Access Pipeline Company.

Standing With Standing Rock! #NoDAPL

The North Dakota pipeline is a planned underground oil pipeline project in North Western United States. The pipeline is going to be 1,172 miles long and run through four different states being North and South Dakota along with Iowa and Illinois. As of November 26, 2016, the pipeline was reported to be 87% completed.

There has been great controversy surrounding the pipeline project. Many question if the pipeline is even necessary to begin with. As well as the potential negative impact that the pipeline can have on the environment. Many worry about safety about the natural resources and endangered species surrounding the area of the pipeline. If the pipeline breaks and has a leakage then this can have substantially bad impacts on air, water, wildlife and farming in the area.

The biggest controversy relating to the pipeline are the protest going on from Native American groups and tribes in the construction area of the pipeline but mainly in Standing Rock; which lies on the border of north and south Dakota. Mainly the Meskwaki and Sioux tribes have been protesting and speaking out about the pipeline. The pipeline runs through sacred grounds of Native American tribes, specifically Standing Rock which is a native american reservation.

Social media frankly has played a big role during the protest of the pipeline. Protests are constantly featured on the news. Numerous grassroot movements like hashtags have been created but the most notable one being the #NoDAPL to help raise awareness. Social media has help bring much more attention to the pipeline project as well as the protest and raise awareness about our environment and ensuring it’s safety.

People are using social media as their voices to let people know what’s going on in this certain situation. For example, Facebook is a way people can find what’s going on with the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. It’s a way that people can be get an inside view of what’s going on with this situation. These are some of the hashtags I found when researching the North Dakota Pipeline Access Pipeline #NoDAPL, #dakotaaccesspipeline, #RezpectOurWater, #WaterIsLife,  #StandWithStandingRock, and #HonorTheTreaties that helps spared the words of people who support this protest. These methods of active because it spread the word of what’s going with this situation and it raises awareness to people in the country and in the world on what happen to these people in more of a peaceful way.
Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. The role the media has is to emphasize on this thing that are not environmental justice.

Norway's Largest Bank Sells Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline Company
This article talks about the 3.8 million dollars that spent for the North Dakota pipeline. The $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline, and it’s considering whether to terminate three separate loans the bank has made to finance the project. With certainty that they will miss the deadline of the January 1st 2017,  oil companies have the opportunity to renegotiate or terminate the contracts with North Dakota Access pipeline.

2. Summarize and write your opinion to the article

Norway’s largest bank sold all of  their assets to try and help the North Dakota pipeline cut all ties with other banks that they took loans from. It explains as to how Pennsylvania is not involved in the North Dakota pipeline issues, but they do speak on how they’re contracts can be renegotiated or even terminated if they do not complete the work on time and at this rate they may not. Personally I am quite disgusted due to the fact that another country  is getting involved with our state affairs and is backing it.

  • Seeing as that a big shot foreign company just divested from DAPL, what would you like to tell the American people to do? How can the American people and government create an environmentally just America? Be specific and explain why your suggestion is helpful in creating a just society.

I would like to tell the American people that they now have the chance to stop this pipeline from ruining the lives of the Native Americans. We as americans have the power to use our voices to try and prevent this horrible things from happening while we still have the chance.

Basically whats going on is that they may not meet the deadline so they might cancel the contract.

2) Seeing as that a big shot foreign company just divested from DAPL, what would you like to tell the American people to do?

I honestly wouldn't know what to tell people to do. But i guess i would tell them that we would have to stand higher and stronger together. But if we really do lose it, i would say we should try and make sure that this gets built in a way where nothing bad could happen.

3)How can the American people and government create an environmentally just America? Be specific and explain why your suggestion is helpful in creating a just society.

We Americans should find more ways for us to be environmentally friendly. I think that if we were to find more ways to be environmentally friendly we would be able to live in a world where we would have to protest the #DAPL. Like what if we were to find more ways or a solid way for us to run of of something more environmentally friendly. Instead of gas, how about grease or water, or maybe even if we were to just make electricity a more powerful source for us to use it for everything instead of gas?

Since April, Native American activists and environmentalists have been protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), which would run nearly 1,172 miles and carry over half a million barrels of crude oil a day from the Bakken Oil Fields in North Dakota to refineries in Patoka, Illinois.

We need to stand together to raise more awareness and to help protest.

Standing With Standing Rock

Many people are using social media to tweet, share, and talk about the injustices that are currently happening in Standing Rock and against the Native American people who currently own the land. It is used to create protests, bring awareness, and even create petitions against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Some hashtags that people continuously use include #NoDAPL and #IStandWithStandingRock. If environmental justice isn't served for this minority group, there can be very dire consequences.

This comes especially when Norway's largest bank, DNB, has "sold its assets in the companies behind the $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline...the sold assets were worth $3 million. The loans under consideration finance up to 10 percent of the pipeline’s construction." However, the bank "considering whether to terminate three separate loans the bank has made to finance the project," since Energy Transfer Partners might not be able to finish construction by January 1st if they do not obtain the final permit from the Army Corps of Engineers to drill under the Missouri River. This should be a wake up sign for the American people, for us to think about what we're actually doing before it's too late. If you can't join the people in Standing Rock to protest, then create one in your area with local people who feel the same way by creating a group and sharing/informing others on the situation. This isn't about just some land, it's water than many people use and drink from everyday. We do not need an even worse situation than Flint, Michigan (who still has no access to clean water!)

Message to Protect Standing Rock

  1. How are people using social media to fight for social justice in this particular situation?

People are using social media to to daily or weekly updates on what’s happening at standing rock. Such as different cultures protesting, or different countries deciding to side with Standing Rock.

  1. Research hashtags people have been using.

#dakotaaccesspipeline #IstandwithStandingRock  #NoDapl

  1. How effective are these methods of action?

I would say these methods are somewhat effective as I’m starting to see them pop up more in my Facebook timeline. As well as people are starting to organize peaceful protests more often.

  1. What is environmental justice and role does social media play in fight environmental justice?

Environmental justice is the act of trying to protect the environment for people who usually cannot protect their own. Such as minorities in Philadelphia who were living in homes with lead paint because of their landlords not telling them. A form of environmental justice would be the city of Philadelphia making the landlords fix get rid of the lead paint and stop taking advantage of the minorities or people who live there that could not afford better homes.

Now social media adds exposure to the injustice. As with Standing Rock people have uploaded videos to Facebook and Twitter. The videos vary from people protesting in the day from being doused by water cannons or running away from tear gas. Social media can show and stand up for what the tv stations won’t.

  1. What do you think can improve the strategy?

What could improve their strategy would be more unity. As people post randomly and sometime the agenda’s all don’t align. It would be better if people could post the hashtag and then talk to others in the group to collaborate on what they want to accomplish.

Read: Norway's Largest Bank Sells Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline Company.  (Links to an external site.)

  1. Summarize and write your opinion to the article

The article states that DNB aka the largest bank in Norway has sold its assets in the companies that were helping the Pipeline. The assets were said to be worth 3 million dollars. Without that funding Energy Transfer Partners has the possibility to miss the January 1st deadline. There is a way for them to remain on schedule if they got a permit to drill under the Missouri River. Yet that’s still up for debate and with as much bad publicity Energy Transfer Partners are getting, the pipeline has a high possibility of missing their deadline, which may lead to the project being shut down.

In my opinion this is great news. With Norway’s bank pulling money the North Dakota Pipeline project might finally end! Energy Transfer Partners needed that funding to finish on time, and with the possibility of them not finishing on time more investors might leave. It is too soon to tell how the events will play out, but all we can do now is wait and hope for the construction of the pipeline's failure.

  1. Seeing as that a big shot foreign company just divested from DAPL, what would you like to tell the American people to do? How can the American people and government create an environmentally just America? Be specific and explain why your suggestion is helpful in creating a just society.

I would like to tell Americans to wake up! At the moment we are severed as a country. Most people are still in turmoil over president elect Donald Trump, while others are getting caught up in holiday fever with Christmas coming. All the while Native Americans are still fighting for having their land not taken from them. As Americans we should come together to try to protect people’s basic rights. One basic right is having land and a home. What the DAPL is take a river that the people of Standing Rock use and pollute it. Ruining a basic natural resource for them. As who gives Energy Transfer Partners the right to come in and take something precious away from the people at Standing Rock. The American people and government need to protect the rights of all people because everyone should have the right to have a home or a place to stay. People should not take advantage of minorities and force them to live in lesser conditions just because they feel like they can! There should be laws in place stopping people from violating someone else’s environmental justice, or from abusing/bullying minorities into giving up a basic human right.

3. Old and New PSA

Original

A PSA previously written by me

Hi. My name is Cameron Lockett. I’m a seventeen year old senior who goes to Science leadership Academy@Beeber. Now there is an important issue going on in the nation, and I wanted to speak to you about it. I know what most people are probably thinking. Wouldn’t it be better to create a drawing or some other outlet to get people’s attention. Yes but to me I find it easier to just tell people how things are without trying to complicate things. By just speaking my mind through words.

Now onto the topic at hand. The state of Pennsylvania is funding a firm called Energy Transfers Partners. What they are trying to do is build a pipeline in North Dakota that would pump oil from North Dakota to Missouri by running it around the Mississippi River. Now this doesn’t seem so bad until you realize that the foundation is near a Native American Reservation. Actually it’s right near a river bank on that foundation. Now whether you want to believe to or not. We need to help preserve that land and try to stop the pipeline. Yes I have seen the information on how the pipeline can bring jobs, and help import oil from our own country so we wouldn’t have to export it as much.

Yet this isn’t just about oil. This is about a culture that wants to protect something sacred to them. Water might not seem like much to the average American, but water is what something essential to every life on this planet. Every living creature on this planet requires water from you, me, your cat, dog, fish, toad, even the trees in your neighborhood. It means even more to the Native Americans since one almost everything has been taken from them in this country, and two they believe in living with nature and not just abusing it as a tool. Yet when the Native Americans tried to stand up for themselves and protect their water they were attacked by dogs and sprayed by workers! Pennsylvanians wake up! Your tax dollars are being used to silence the voice of a culture that is already almost gone. Please don’t just ignore this and try to speak up in any way you can. Tell your neighbor, coworkers, family members, but please don’t just sit around and do nothing.

Sincerely, Cameron Lockett

Revised

Fast Forward two months…

Same ol’ Thanksgiving

Hi. I’m Cameron Lockett. The paragraphs you just read are from a PSA I wrote over two months ago when the Dakota Access Pipeline was just starting. Since then the situation has escalated! While most of us were at home enjoying Thanksgiving. The people of Standing Rock were fighting for their homes. Just about every day for the past two months there have been protests at Standing Rock trying to stop the process of the Dakota Access Pipeline being built. As the people of Standing Rock just want their homes to be safe.

Okay I know what some people may be thinking. Like why should I care? Or what does this have to do with me? Well let me remind you of something. Most of us have not had to struggle for basic rights like the Native Americans had. We have taken almost everything from that culture, and all we can do is barely say sorry. If some of our founding fathers had the option they would have eradicated them entirely. When we were kids we were all taught that at the first Thanksgiving we shared with the Native Americans because we didn't have much, but the Native Americans were there to help us and teach us to be thankful for what we have. Now look at us… People are getting hit with rubber bullets, doused with water cannons, and hit with tear gas. And no not because they did anything wrong, all they have been trying to do it protect the river that is essential to their home.

Now I don’t know if my message will reach anyone, but I just want people to know what is going on in the world. As I can say I am very fortunate for the life I have been given, and I appreciate my home and life. Yet I know there are people in the world who struggle just for something I take for granted almost everyday. So I’m trying to do my part and get the message across that the people of Standing Rock need our help and support. Because all they our doing is just protecting their home… It’s that simple.

Sincerely, Cameron Lockett

Standing For Standing Rock

Social Media Impact

Those who may not have a voice are speaking out directly through social media on injustices facing the North Dakota Access Pipeline. People are using social media as a platform of representation of what is going on to make those who may not know what's going on through hashtags and retweets. Every time when the information regarding the DNAPL is retweeted hundreds and thousands of more eyes are able to see it. On social media like twitter Instagram and Facebook pictures and videos are represented of Standing Rock Sioux Tribe  members protesting the government’s installment of a goal mind on their own indigenous land.

Hashtags are an effective way information surrounding standing rock get surfaced around the internet. When you search #StandingRock many tweets/photos/video appear providing facts and also updates on important facts on the treatment of protesters. The hastags #NoDAPL #Keepfighting also appear. There is an actual twitter page named NoDAPL with 37.6k followers dedicated to the fight for their land. These social media pages are also used to gather and organize the protest and rallies against the government and big oil companies.

Norway's Largest Bank Sells Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline Company

This article states the largest bank in Norway, DNB has sold its assets in the company behind the $3.8  billion access pipeline. They are also considering if they should terminate three separate loans the bank has made to finance the project. One thing that is distinctive was that the Norway's DNB is not connected to Pennsylvania's DNB. The thing is those assets are going towards just a money making project which is selfish and destroys others land.

Standing with Standing Rock

People are using social media to fight for social justice in this particular situation by providing updates as well as information. However according to Michael Bennet in the article “Cohn, Michael Bennett. "The Dakota Access Pipeline Protectors Won't Give up." Newsweek. N.p., 2016. Web. 28 Nov. 2016.” New reports and social media told two different stories. A popular hashtag they have been using on twitter is #dakotaaccesspipeline. Considering many people use social media it is a very good method of action going into this. But if you mean methods they are using to solve this issue a very good method they are using is their protesting. Although the protesting has been getting a little violent it has still been getting the point across and spreading awareness on this issue. Social media plays a huge part in environmental justice in this issue. I took a look at the twitter hashtag and it looks like social media is bringing for people together for this issue. Social media also got people who are well known also involved. This is getting justice for an environmental issue. A way to improve their strategy is by trying to stay away from the violence part of things. I understand protesting and getting your point across in social media. But when it comes to things like rioting, that just makes it worse.

In this article they were a lot more logical. They broke down the pros and cons to each option they had dealing with this Dakota Access Pipeline. In my opinion I actually agree with this article. It is discussing how we can help/address the issue but it is also being logical about it. American people and the government can help the environment in many ways. You can help the environment is by reducing how much food you waste. This may not sound like much of a big deal but food waste is really bad for the environment. 40% of the food in the United States is wasted, when this food could be filling up 1 billion of the people starving in America, it is instead too busy filling up landfills and eventually turns into to methane. The solution to this issue is quite obvious. Just don’t bite more than you can chew, and try not to waste food.

The Dakota Access Pipeline is an underground oil pipeline that runs 1,272 miles long. The planned route begins in the Bakken oil fields in northwest North Dakota and travels through South Dakota and Iowa. The pipeline has been controversial in its impact on the environment as well as in its necessity. A number of Native Americans in Iowa and the Dakotas have opposed the pipeline.

These Native Americans have protested the construction of the pipeline and the treatment of these protestors has been a highlight in the media. These protests have gained international attention. During the latest clash between police and protesters, law enforcement officials used tear gas and water cannons in freezing temperatures to disperse a crowd of some 400 protesters trying to cross a blockaded bridge. These protestors are determined fight the construction of these pipeline that they say will bulldoze sacred sites on Native American reservations. Tribes also want to protect the Missouri River which is the primary water source for the Standing Rock Reservation, from a potential pipeline leakage.

Millions of people have joined in the fight against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline via social media. In October 2016, more than 600,000 ‘“checked in” at Standing Rock, according to Facebook. The action of “checking in” was used as a means of showing solidarity with those in Standing Rock fighting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Social media has been an important instrument in spreading the word about what is going on at Standing Rock. There have been instances where protesters at Standing Rock have used Periscope, a live streaming service through Twitter, to show the public how protesters are being treated by law enforcement. These live streams lets people internationally see what is going at Standing Rock in real-time.

If you are like me, after reading all of this information you may feel like there is nothing that we can do to help being that we are so far from Standing Rock. This is in fact untrue. There are several ways to help those fighting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline at Standing Rock.

  1. How are people using social media to fight for social justice in this particular situation?

    1. People are using social media to protest with words, sharing photos, writing articles and creating videos to make others understand the situation with graphic content.

  2. Research hashtags people have been using?

    1. The hashtags are that being use for protest for Dakota Access Pipeline are #NoDAPL, #NorthDakota, #DAPL, #DakotaAccessPipeline, #StandingRock, #StandWithStandingRock, #HonorTheTreaties, #STOPDAPL, #SacredWater, and #RezpectOurWater.

  3. How effective are these methods of action?

    1. I believe these methods of action is very effective because their are more than few social media that people are using to spread words and stop the people who trying to run a oil pipeline in north Dakota, for example Facebook has almost 1.60 billion user, Instagram has 500 million user and twitter has 320 million user. I believe that our president “Barack Obama” will do something before his time over in officer.

  4. What is environmental justice and role does social media play in fight environmental justice?

    1. The environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. The role that social media play in fighting for environmental justice is that helping create more attraction to the topic, involving more people in the situation of North Dakota pipeline, which give others benefits of joining over the social media to let their friends and family knows about it too, and create this protest strong how people care about river that only one with not poised by human.

  5. What do you think can improve the strategy?

    1. I think that strategy that can improve is people keep protesting until they stop the North Dakota pipeline and we need help from our president because all millionaire and billionaire care about make money and in North Dakota river that are the only river that has types of oil or any others stuff has been added to to water.

PART 2:

  1. Summarize and write your opinion to the article?

    1. This article “The largest bank in Norway, DNB, has sold its assets in the companies behind the $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline, and it’s considering whether to terminate three separate loans the bank has made to finance the project. The sold assets were worth $3 million. The loans under consideration finance up to 10 percent of the pipeline’s construction. Norway’s DNB is not connected to DNB First, which is based in Pennsylvania and is not involved in the Dakota Access pipeline.”

  2. Seeing as that a big shot foreign company just divested from DAPL, what would you like to tell the American people to do? How can the American people and government create an environmentally just America? Be specific and explain why your suggestion is helpful in creating a just society?

    1. I would like to tell all my fellas American people to stand with people of North Dakota Pipeline Protest because they are trying to make money, and we are trying to live healthier life and we are trying to save this river from getting poised one day for oil spill, American people can stand together and protest however they can to save the river from get access to the pipeline and government can help us by stopping this “DAPL” thing. This will prevent us from getting bad water from the river, it will help us having a only river that doesn’t have oil pipeline run in America and it will help us from getting any types of health problems.

Review PA Tax Dollar PSA assignment:

  1. This article is about North Dakota Pipeline that people are protesting against the oil pipeline and that the only river that doesn't have oil pipeline and people are counting about getting safe and clean water, they are think about what if the pipeline broke down some day it´s gonna spill all the oil and mixed it up with water and then people of Dakota will have no clean water, this protesting against the pipeline because they don't to get bad water they want to keep the water clean as it is. My reaction to this article is that is it a good things that they want to save only river that has not been puted oil pipeline and keep it like that, It's a good things to keep our river clean for clean water and keep our life from getting sick and stuff. Philadelphia people are involved with North Dakota Pipeline issue is that people from Philadelphia helping to North Dakota people love and support and standing against oil pipeline. We are give our taxpayer money to do stuff that necessary for our county but instead of improving they are trying to waste money and create more problem to the public for example if they run a oil pipeline between North Dakota river it will cause broken oil pipeline which will be no longer clean water for people to drink, So I want to send a message to families and friend to protest against this oil pipeline.

People are using social media to fight for social justice by using hashtags such as: #dakotaaccesspipeline, #dapl, and #nodapl. These hashtags are spreading awareness and have even been used to organize rallies and protests against the big oil companies. It is great to see people of all different backgrounds coming together uniting against a common enemy. Social media is a great way to spread information about something you care about. Almost everyone uses some source of social media and that makes it a great and reliable way to spread information.

Where do you think your tax dollars go; to strengthen our police force, pave the roads, or to teach our children? What if I told you they were going to siccing dogs on Native American protesters. The people of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe were attacked by dogs for exercising their right to protest. Sheriff Bull Connor sicced dogs on civil rights protesters in Birmingham a half century ago. The North Dakota pipeline is a $3.8 billion dollar project that paves right through a Native American reservation. If installed the pipeline will spew oil into a nearby river that the Sioux Tribe depends on for freshwater and food. Not only are the Sioux Tribe being affected by the pipeline, farmers in Iowa are losing their land. The pipeline is calculated to carry 570,000 barrels of oil a day through the Dakotas and Iowa. We are not sure if the oil is for U.S. citizens.

The article “Norway’s Largest Bank Sells Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline Company” talks about how the largest bank in Norway funding nearly 3.5 billion dollars into the pipeline project. This is very bad for the people of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The money from the bank will not only push the project back on track, but it may also bring in more investors to fund the pipeline. If this large norwegian bank sees this as profitable, than others may invest further to make more money by killing Native Americans on their land. The reward is not worth the outcome, If this goes through they will lose a ton of customers that are protesting the pipeline.

About 2 weeks ago police used rubber bullets, tear gas, and water in cold temperatures to deter protesters. The police say they used water to put out fires but video footage proves this to not be the case. 167 people were injured. Most recently the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have told the protesters to leave by December 5th.

After reading the article “Norway's Largest Bank Sells Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline Company” I feel grateful for this foreign bank to hold morality over money. The people on the front lines protesting needed to hear some good news and I think this is some of the best good news they have gotten in a while. The article talks about how the largest Norwegian bank has severed its ties with the pipeline and could even revoke the funds it lent the project. As for what the American people should do now, we should continue to oppose the creation of this pipeline. Just because one group has stopped funding this project does not mean we can stop. We must continue to protest this until it is cancelled. We must put more funding into recyclable energy, such as solar and wind power. The more we rely on oil the more and more situations such as DAPL will pop up.

Standing With Standing Rock Blog Post: Created By Eliza Meketon

How are people using social media as a way of fighting against the
North Dakota Access Pipeline?
People are promoting awareness, which in turn helps get others to join the cause and come and protest. Activist members are also using social media as a way to get viewers to write to their government officials, and then get them to lobby against the oil company so they can no longer carry out their plan to build a pipeline through sacred burial ground, while simultaneously polluting the Sioux Tribe's main source of water. Hashtags have played such an important role in launching this cause, mostly because social media directs people to places that show solidarity with Standing rock, such as buying things to protect the protesters from the bitter cold off an Amazon wish list made by the Standing Rock Medic and Healer Council, or donating to the Sioux fund for legal council. Even though I think social media has a lot of flaws, it has been very inspiring to be able to see how the community has been able to interact and enlighten one another on the injustices that have been committed by the oil companies from across the country. Lately we have been told to focus on are differences, but social media has allowed us to come together and show that we do not stand for injustice or the pollution of our basic human rights.

Hashtags that have been used during this environmental justice event

After doing some research some of the most common hashtags that has been used is #NoDAPL, #standingrock, #standingwithstandingrock, and #waterislife. While there are probably hundreds more, these seem to surface the most.

Are these methods truly effective?
Social media is constantly being updated and viewed by people across the globe and it’s users range from a wide spectrum of ages. No longer are teens and young adults the only slaves to social media. I think especially since our presidential nominees started using it as a way to connect to younger audiences, it has gotten older generations to join in on the virtual conversation. Meaning your grandmother is as avid a user as you are now. I think social media is such a great platform for activist groups because now they can communicate with a bigger audience and people can show support much easier than in previous years. For a long time signing some petition was thought to be the only way to show your support for something, but now it is so much deeper than that. Today, people have such a variety of options. They can donate money to support protesters, they can actually go out and protest, they can call write a letter to the president voicing concern and outrage over the pipeline, they can spread awareness by telling friends to go look up the issue, or they can tweet and get other people to join the movement, the options are endless, all these options make this form of promotion and campaigning so effective. People don’t like feeling like they are being forced to do something. When they are given the option to put in as little effort as possible, while feeling all the glory that being a “good” person comes with. I think this is evident by seeing just how many celebrities have joined the movement. Now I am not saying all of them are doing this for publicity, but it is definitely a perk. This is the invisible hand at its finest, i.e the way in which one's individual pursuit of self-interest can lead to good results for society as a whole.
How do you define environmental justice
&
what role does social media have in fighting against it

According to the Environmental Protection Agency “Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.” There has been environmental injustice for as long as there has been people. In recent years however, there has been an explosion of environmental activism due to the ever growing popularity of social media platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. Now people can just snap a picture of them holding a protest sign and people will understand the message they are trying to get across. Showing solidarity with a cause is just so much easier due to the introduction of hashtags. People can just type in the #standingwithstandingrock with a picture of a drop of oil and they have done their activists duty for the day. Also causes can go viral a whole lot easier than let's say fifty years ago. Back then if you wanted to get a cause off the ground and you wanted to organize a protest, the only way you could reach out to people is by word of mouth or by passing out flyers. Now you could just make a well worded post, and share it with family and friends, they then share it with their family and friends, and soon the cause has blown up everyone's feed. It is almost inescapable. Causes now have a following and communities dedicated to raising awareness. Before people could just throw away flyers or ignore the weirdos on the sidewalk yelling at them to save some endangered animal with a weird name. There is just too hefty of a price to pay if you don’t want to go on social media. You essentially have two choices, be bombarded with whatever people want you to be interested in or be completely in the dark on what is going on society and the thing people are most likely to be discussing at school or work the next day. While it may be annoying to have every little cause someone deems important constantly blowing up your feed, it is necessary to have people be so addicted to this staple in our current culture. Without it, people wouldn’t be given the opportunity to take a second, third, fourth, or fifth glance, at a cause because they dismissed the first time around. While this is not directly aimed at environmental justice, it has everything in the world to do with it. I am not going to lie, it is extremely hard to get people interested in something that may not directly have an effect on them, that is not a insulation on the lack of care people have for one another, but a comment on how people need a push when it comes to justice of any kind. We need to see other people getting involved in order to know it is the thing will make us more socially accepted in society, I think what it truly comes down to is we want to fit in, it is easier to see that all our friends have joined in with supporting a cause when all of them have the #NoDAPL as their profile picture rather than seeing the third person in a row throw out the Stand Rock flyer they just received.

How can we improve upon this strategy?

Frankly, I believe the number one problem with launching causes purely on social media, is that people look to improper sources for information. You could have a properly vetted source, someone who has been on the front-lines, is an organizer of events and protests, as well as done some personal research, and can be classified as an expert on the cause. Then you could have someone who just joined because yesterday, still has very little understanding of the deeper meaning behind the cause, is actually just doing it to get some pictures for Instagram, but takes great pictures, uses snappy phrases, and gets the group a lot followers on social media. Which person is worth more to the cause? Someone who knows all the facts and is truly dedicated to getting the cause off the ground, or someone who brings a lot of attention to the activist group, but under false pretenses, and incorrect facts? Social media has blurred the lines on what's ok and not ok to say, it is not only completely new, but pretty much unregulated territory. This makes it that much more difficult for people who are educated on the issues and are trying to deliver the facts for viewers trying to join the cause who are getting turned off by people spewing nothing but dishonesty and garbage.

Summary and impression on the Democracy Now article

The article “Norway's Largest Bank Sells Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline Company” was about how a very important and large Norwegian bank is pulling 3.5 billion dollars worth of assets in the companies that are behind the North Dakota Access Pipeline. This comes as no surprise due to the the deadlines being missed by the Energy Transfer Partners and the new projected deadlines being nowhere near close to the original finish date. This has lead to some speculation on whether the oil companies will pull out on their contract with the pipeline companies. There is even talk of canceling the project entirely. I honestly believe this was all inevitable. You can’t have so much opposition to a project and not run into some snafus. With all the negative press the protesters have been getting, it is no wonder why being in cahoots with the pipeline company might not be the best image booster. With all the demonstrators doing whatever they can to delay the pipeline construction, it only makes sense that the builders would not meet deadlines.

As previously mentioned this is the invisible hand at it’s best. Companies/businesses are amoral, but this kind of works in society’s favor due to the fact that you only get people to invest or purchase your product is by getting them to like your company and think that your product is good. People invest/buy with their gut, brains are great but we are creatures that have had millions of years of evolution behind us, and the only way we have gotten to where we are today is because of instincts. They have allowed us to survive in all types of deadly situations. Even though we no longer have to fight off savage animals, instincts help us distinguish the beasts from the average joe. Companies understand that and even though installing a pipeline might make the company might sound like a smart investment in the future, it is costing them customers now. The payout isn’t worth the cost of losing so many customers. If they don’t see themselves getting out what they are putting in, it just doesn’t make the financial sense to continue with this money pit of a project.

How America should react after the recent DAPL Divestment

&

As well as how America's people and government can work to

create an environmentally just society

I think the American people need to probe deeper into the situation going on and ask themselves if desecrating ancient burial grounds and possibly polluting an already marginalized group’s main water supply, is worth getting an outdated source of energy. Big surprise it is not! To be honest, if I have had no previous knowledge of this situation and someone handed me the story without mentioning to many specifics, I would instantly think this happened at the very most four decades ago, not in 2016! This is honestly disgusting and anyone who doesn't understand why, needs to retake some history classes because this exactly why we have them, to remind us of past events so we don’t repeat them.

Too many groups of people have been completely tossed aside by the American government especially Native Americans, who from day one have been massacred, robbed, and utterly deprived of human dignity and it absolutely needs to stop. Once you step foot onto American soil you deserve the rights that were fought and died for by our founding fathers, who understood what it felt like to be denied civil liberties by an oppressive government. I think our current government needs to update those rights to include environmentally centered ones that focus on laws that prevent things such as environmental racism. This would mean an update to the constitution and in turn amendments that would make it unconstitutional to commit environmental injustices. We really need the government to take environmental based crimes seriously, because the EPA and groups like the ACLU can only do so much. We need actual laws to come into play that specifically aimed at people getting taking advantage of by oil, lumber, energy, and other polluting companies. These heartless corporations look for the most vulnerable communities, usually targeting people from low income housing, only high school educated, or people of color, and they dig their teeth in. We need to let these companies know that every citizen deserves the right to clean air, water, and soil. Once these amendments become official, big corporations will have to think twice about dumping toxic sludge into a communities only water source or fracking for oil in your neighbor's backyard. The truth of the matter is we all should want to protect our planet and defend it against anyone who tries to poison it. The sooner we realize that, the sooner we can get back on track and try to restore all the damage that has been done. We need to stand together, because regardless of you are or where you come from, we all have the same home, and that is earth.

I Stand With Standing Rock

Currently, protestors in Dakota are being tear-gassed because of them preventing the Dakota Access Pipeline from being built. Why are these people protesting?

These people are protesting because of environmental injustice. The current group of people being discriminated against native to the land the Dakota Pipeline is being built over. This pipeline could possibly poison their water source. This pipeline is in Dakota, but it affects us Philadelphians. Our tax dollars and teachers’ pensions are being used to pay part of this project. If this project could possibly endanger others why are we funding it? This question has been avoided.

The government hasn’t made any solutions to the conflict surrounding the Dakota Pipeline, but this hasn’t stopped the efforts of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. They’ve been creating social media pages, petitions, hashtags, and protests. There might be hope the ending of the Dakota Access Pipeline in the near future. A big foreign investor has divested from the Dakota Access Pipeline. The Energy Transfer Crude Oil Company is scrambling for money to continue their project, but they’re running thin in time to meet their deadline.

“Pennsylvania Oil Spill”

Pennsylvania…. The place where the greatest things of this country were accomplished. Where the representation of what Brotherly Love was originated. What is this happy place? Full of different people as idealistic as can be. Children sprouting with knowledge like vines. The perfect state and perfect home, but where there is light it must be darkness.

A third-grade teacher 15 years into their career pray for a peaceful retirement. Not only peaceful but guaranteed like how you expect the ground always to be beneath your feet when you take your next step. A monstrous oil poisons and forbids our pursuit of happiness as Pennsylvanians. We’re blinded of where these “tax dollars” that supposedly help to make a better society go…
Our money has no intent to be used for good, but to harm the water supply of others. Yes, water the source of all life! Without water we wouldn’t be in existence. Yet our voices are gripped and ripped apart by officials that don’t care about our lives. Let your voice be heard or continue to let your tax dollars get burned!

Standing with Standing Rock.

  1. The Dakota Access Pipeline is a proposed underground oil pipeline, which spans for over 1,134 miles. The Dakota Access Pipeline is controversial because people don’t believe it’s necessary and it can harm the environment. Native Americans have opposed the pipeline, including but not limited to the Meskwaki and Sioux nations. The Dakota Access Pipeline has plans to go through the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Standing Rock Indian Reservation is a Hunkpapa, Lakota and Yanktonai Dakota Native American Reservation. Standing Rock Indian Reservation is a sacred/religious ground for these Native Americans, and if the pipeline is built, it would destroy sites, and items of spiritual significance.

    1. Social Media has people fighting for social justice by creating Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat pages to educate people about the Dakota Access Pipeline, changing their names on Twitter to reflect their stance on the DAPL by changing their names to #NoDAPL, sharing videos to educate their followers, and friends; as well as sharing a petition.

    2. Some of the hashtags people have been using in regards to the Dakota Access Pipeline are #NoDAPL, #NorthDakota, #DAPL, #DakotaAccessPipeline, #StandingRock, #StandWithStandingRock, #HonorTheTreaties, #STOPDAPL, #SacredWater, and #RezpectOurWater.

    3. I believe that Social Media is an effective form of fighting for Social Justice, because the social media sites people are using have huge amounts of users. Twitter has over 320 million users, while Instagram has over 500 million, Facebook has over 1.59 billion, and Snapchat has over 100 million users. These are the biggest social media sites that people can be found using every day. President-Elect Donald Trump is a frequent Twitter user, and so if #NoDAPL, or #DAPL is trending, he could see it along with the petitions, and could intervene in the situation.

    4. Environmental Justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies, according to Wikipedia. When you think of the role that social media plays in environmental justice, let’s take it a step back and think about the role social media plays in social justice. We can look at the “Black Lives Matter” movement. Black Lives Matter is a movement which campaigns in opposition to the innocent killings of African-Americans by police officers. The Black Lives Matter began as a simple hashtag: #BlackLivesMatter and has since grew to something so much bigger. It has lead to chapters being set up, and non-African-Americans joining in on the campaign for better treatment of colored people. Social Media plays an important part in the fight for Environmental Justice because there a certain people who get all of their news from Social Media, and they’re reading the hashtags, and seeing people who are in opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline, will inspire them to educate themselves on the issue, as well as join the fight, and spread their knowledge onto other people.

PART II.

  1. The article “Norway’s Largest Bank Sells Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline Company”, is an article that talks about how DNB is in favor of the North Dakota Access Pipeline Company. The DNB has sold over $3.8 billion in assets to help finance the project. When I read that DNB had sold over $3.8 billion to fund the DAPL, I was disappointed because this money could have gone to bigger and better things, but it only goes to prove that people are only interested in getting a bigger payout, which seems like DNB will get that, if the DAPL is built.

    1. After reading that a huge foreign company just invested in the DAPL, I want the Americans to know that we need to fight harder, and we need to continue to spread the word about the DAPL, and what it will do to the religious grounds in North and South Dakota. If we continue to educate people on the negative effects of the DAPL by using social media, and protesting, we will see powerful companies such as Fortune 500 companies, and organizations such as the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, etc. stand up and donate money, time to protest, etc.

Immediacy once he made the post about mexicans it was there for the world there was no hiding it

Permanence the tweet was there everyone saw it all his followers saw his post

Lack of Control  people can screenshot it and send it to everyone thats what happen with mike his bosses got the tweet and he was fired

Artist Statement

The reason I made this art because I always been a fan of pac-man. I remember playing pac-man aunt's house as a kid all the time. For this project i had to a pac-man theme. I look up some ideas on google and i seen one examples and immediately had vision for my project. I never did a pac-man project for a grade so i thought this will be cool. I think my audience reaction will be excited to see a classic old school game. I believe i could've did better for this project. My previous work in my opinion I believe I done better. My current work right now i doesn't feel good about it. will relates to my previous work be… My art will fit in the history of art practice by seeing how I got better over the years of doing art all my life, and see how my work progress and how it improved. One inspiration that art stood out to me was a picture from google imageImage result for pac man coloring wheel”  My art will fit into a group exhibition because of its classic theme. My art will go with all 80s classic games.  My art relates to other artist in the world because of its unique theme and  different pattern, most of my influence come from google images. A artist technique i use for art painting is pigment colors ( pigments include a corresponding colors, secondary colors, and tertiary colors). A new technique I learn was the palette,  palette is what you use to mix colors and make new a color.

Be Conscious, Think Before you Post!

On YouTube, there was a young youtuber. His name was Roastingkid1907. One day, he decidedto make 2 videos, "I roast leafyishere" and "I roast Pewdiepie"

Pewdiepie is the most popular Youtuber on youtube, and Leafyishere is also a very big youtuber. He reacts to videos in more unique way more then other youtubers. He was also known for having a horrible fan base, because whenever he reacted to a video, his fans would go on that video and harass the person who made the video. His popularity began when the Youtuber Pewdiepie made a facebook post, linking the "Roasting Pewdiepie" video in the post. At the same time, Leafyishere reacted to the "Roasting leafyishere" video.

The kid received a huge amount of hate on his videos. However, he continued to roast various youtubers. Eventually, thing got bad for him. Kids at his school started to harass him, so he deleted his video. However, Leafyishere still had his reaction to roastingkid videos. His other videos got archived and re uploaded on other channels. He continued to get hate. He eventually posted suicidal picture of himself, and people started to worry he was going to do something bad to his self. He started getting support. He apologized for the roasting videos, deleted his channel, and left forever. The youtube community was happy that he didn't decided to commit suicide. This is a good example of someone not thinking before they post.

If he thought about the consequences of posting that video before he did post it, nothing bad would've happened to him.

Just remember, think before you post, or you could windup in the same situation as him.

Gerry Hamilton

Gerry Hamilton posted a tweet about 29th ranked football recruit Roquan Smith and put a link in the tweet about him committing to Texas A&M. The link was supposed to be a highlight of him playing football, but instead it was a link to pornographic material. Gerry tried to delete the link but people started screenshotting the post before it was offline.

Lack of control is in this because he did not double check his link and made a big mistake. Imediency plays into this because as soon as he posted it people started screenshotting. Its permanent because screenshots.

Boston Marathon bombings

2013 Boston Marathon bombings

This women dressed up as a victim of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings on Halloween before going to work and shared it on Twitter, revealing it to the world.Trying to make fun of the event leading to so many deaths, this is a guaranteed way to lose a job.

This women’s choice affected individual's life because she made fun of peoples family, when dressing up as a victim of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. This lady could have really gotten hurt for dressing up that. Immediacy played a role in this because this lady just reminded the people family’s death and how tragic it was. Permanence played a role in this because that post will always be on the internet somewhere and can not be taken down. Lack of control played into the story because when she posted this it may not be able to be taken down.

The Justine Sacco's Story

On October 7, 2015 The New York Times published an article about Justine Sacco. Justine Sacco is infamous from her tweet about AIDS. She tweeted, “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!” The tweet went viral and the internet ran wild. Her career and future was ruined because of her actions.

Her tweets will affect her life because everyone she meets will label her as a racist. Justine’s future jobs will look at her posts and notice that she made a joke about AIDS and Africans, and they could possibly be offended.

Immediacy comes into this story because as soon as she tweeted the remark, her followers viewed it. She couldn’t take it back or erase it from their memory, which brings Lack of Control into the picture. She had no control over who screenshotted her tweet and who shared it with her friends. The New York Times and Paparazzi noticed the comment and made articles about it which were shortly published, her tweet will be Permanent. Next time, Justine should think about what she says and how it would offend others before posting it.
