Eulogy:

¡Hola mis amigos!

Yo soy Moesha.

“Día de los Muertos” is known as the holiday celebrating the day of the dead. The person I am celebrating for  “Día de los Muertos” is my Aunt Rosa. My Aunt Rosa died in the year of 2004 from natural causes. Her death was devastating to my family. She was a vibrant woman, who always would bring a joyous vibe everywhere she went. Her presence could change the mood of a room from sad to happy. She had a glistening, white smile that she loved to show off. My Aunt Rosa was always the life of the party and people always remembered her for having a good time anywhere she was.

Her fashion sense was spectacular. She would put the wierdest colors together and pull them off. She had a tendency of constantly experimenting with makeup especially her red lipstick. She used her lipstick to make her signature ruby red cheeks.

The thing she most valued in her life is her family. She would do anything for her family even if her life was at risk. My Aunt Rosa was a generous neighbor and gave out to the people of her neighborhood very often. She meant the word to me, even though I didn’t get to know her that long because I was only 5 years old when she died. I always admired how she smiled at the worst times and dressed up in nice jewelry. She made me develop a passion for jewelry. Since, she exposed me to jewelry I never could leave the house without it. Before she passed away, I received a pearl necklace from her. I cherished that necklace because it smelled just like her flowery perfume. The necklace resembled pearl necklaces from the 50’s. Rosa was the perfect name for her because she loved roses and the color red. Also, because of how delicate and graceful she was like a rose.

I decided to create a sugar skull in remembrance of her because I miss her dearly. Since, “Día de los Muertos” is the holiday of celebrating the dead and my Aunt Rosa loved to celebrate and party I figured she would be the best person to use for my sugar skull. My sugar skull reflects her because it has her favorite color red incorporated in it. In addition, it’s very colorful because as I said before she was vibrant and outgoing.  I added feathers to show how elegant and ladylike she was. Glitter and jewel pieces were added to demonstrate how she loved to be bold with the way she dressed and her makeup. Also, how she liked sparkly items. I added a sign saying Queen Bee because she was the queen of my heart. My mask has a similar look to my skull. My mask only has more light colors incorporated in it. I chose to add more feather to my mask because I wanted a 1950’s theme, which reminded me of the pearl necklace she gave me. Women of the 1950s tended to wear head pieces with lots of feathers and since, I didn’t have any pearl charms that’s the only thing I could use.

“Día de los Muertos” opened my mind up to celebrating the passing of loved ones by it made realize you shouldn’t constantly mourn the lost of your loved ones, but should celebrate it because they most likely wouldn’t want you to spend your life being depressed about their deaths. “Día de los Muertos” taught me I should do more to celebrate my deceased loved ones like bringing their favorite items to their graves or playing music for them.“Día de los Muertos” is different from Halloween by it has more meaning to it. On Halloween, everyone looks for candy and spooky stuff, but on “Día de los Muertos” people celebrate and cherish the deceased. They don’t look for candy, but look for the joy of honoring their loved ones. This holiday is so beautiful and radiant to me. I would love to visit Mexico on this occasion.

~Ms. Hertz Interview~

  • Who has been the biggest influence on your life?- “I say as I raised my own son, because I have a son at home I learned more and more about the impact that it had on my life and the types of opportunities that they gave me, support they gave me, and the amount of freedom they gave me as a child and I’m seeing that because my parents let me be who I wanted, they didn’t force me to do anything really that I didn’t want to do and gave me opportunities to pursue my dreams and passions. They really helped me become who I wanted to become today”.

  • What is your earliest childhood memory?- “I don’t know if this was my earliest childhood memory but, one memory that I had was when I was very young and is not necessarily a good one, my mom is diabetic, so when I was very little she had a very low blood sugar and got very sick. Me and my brother was home alone with her and I remember I could barely reach the top of the oven so I had to go in the refrigerator to pour her some juice. So it sticks in your brain and is hard to forget”.

  • Did you ever picture yourself in the position that you are now?- “ Not really because when I was your age or around college I maybe had an idea that I wanted to be a teacher, but I never would’ve guessed I would be teaching technology. Maybe art but I would of never guessed what I would be doing now.”

  • What made you get into more technology?- “ When I was at my very first school here in Philadelphia, I was made the computer lab teacher because I was the only one who knew how to work computers, I was scared at first but then found out I really liked it”.

  • Who is your biggest influence?- “  My biggest influence would be my mother because I feel like she's been through alot these past 10 years. My sister was born disabled so I feel like she was struggling but she helped my sister and you know I just feel like she's a strong woman".

  • Where do you picture yourself in 10 years?-  "This also a hard question! I'm.not sure, I don't know. I don't even know what I wanna be when I get older but I know that I'm gonna have a car and house and hopefully a pet and a job. But I don't know".

Interview with Salina

Q: How do you see the world?

A: I see the world as a judgmental society as everyone is being judged and that we can also make your own decisions.

Q: Why do you see the world as that?

A: Because we can’t last long in a society without being judged or commented on who we are or how we look.

Q: How do you see others?

A: See everyone equal, as a community, that everyone has different character traits,  and that everyone is special in their own way.

Q: If the world was ending and you could save one person, would it be, why, and would they do the same?

A: My grandmother because she has done a lot for me throughout my life, and I believe so.

Q: If you could change one thing in your past, what would it be?

A: Would change my behavior, because I was a really bad kid when I was younger and that caused stress to my grandmother.

Q: Of all the things in the past, why this one?

A: Because it caused stress to my family, and I was a foster child because my mom had so many kids to the point she couldn't take care of, so I lived with my grandmother. I was getting in a lot of trouble in school, but the reason I did that was so I could see my mother again because I thought that the principal would call her to pick me up and stuff, but that wasn't the case.
